You know during tamil mimicry show, they do introductions like "just an imagination" - what if this dialogue or scene is done by this actor or that actor.
Similarly Atlee has come up with his show : Mouna ragam padathil Revathi (nayanthara) -ku oru kadalan Karthik (jai) irupathu ellorukum therium. Athuvey Mohan (Arya) -ku oru Kadhali irundhal (nazriya) ? Oru chinna karapanai - result - Raja Rani.

Twist 1 : Nayanthara costumes - kongam bayama thaan irruku !

Anyway, how are the songs ?

Got the songs, but just heard them once completely. Already "Imaye Imaye" (& A Love for Life) songs have some details to talk about. Then you got that Madhavan kind-a song "Chillena" which is quite catchy. "Hey Baby" which looks like an "ad" song turns macho with Gana Bala (and GVP is still having "post-paradesi-syndrome").

Need some more time (much time) to talk about Raja Rani songs as Villa has overtaken rest of the albums.
(At a point its quite dry, and suddenly so many albums releasing => jolly)

Raja Rani

Debutant director Atlee`s highly hyped Raja Rani starts off promisingly and keeps us engaged in the first half. But post-interval it loses steam, and turns out to be a cheesy, emotionally manipulative drama with a predictable long drawn out climax that goes on and on for 35 minutes.
Raja Rani has it all good looking stars, big budget, rich look, peppy music, technically glitzy and popular comedian and his bar dance. In short all the trappings of a commercial potboiler but lacks a solid script.
There is love after love failure is the premise of the film. John (Arya) and Regina (Nayanthara) have an arranged marriage, despite not being interested in it. Both are yet to come out of their previous romances. Regina was desperately in love with Surya (Jai), while John had a roaring affair with Keerthana (Nazriya). How two people nursing deep romantic wounds finally come together forms the rest of the story.
The trouble with the film is the weak story which can be told in one-line but runs for nearly three hours. On the downside, the emotions too are contrived and there are no smart dialogues.
How many films have we seen the hero or heroine cancelling her trip at the airport, railway station or bus stop? Going back to the oldest trick in the book, Atlee selects a long drawn out climax at the new Chennai airport, for that mushy happy ending. The film has some similarity with Kannada flick Milana and there are traces of Mani Ratnam classic Mouna Ragam.
Nayanthara gets a well-written role and she couldn`t ask for a better character than Regina for her return after a three-year hiatus. She looks good, throws herself into the role, approaches her part with restraint and minimalist fuss, and turns in a sincere performance. And this is unquestionably this film`s biggest strength.
Arya as the romantic dude is clearly at home playing this kind of funny and romantic character. He oozes confidence and is an absolute delight. Newcomer Nazriya Nasim appears confident, and is well cast as the spirited orphan girl, but saddled with an inconsistent character, she fails to leave a lasting impression.
Sathyaraj does a cameo as heroine`s father and does it in style. Cast once again as hero`s best friend, adviser and love doctor, Santhanam does the job but is getting stale.
GV Prakash`s music is definitely one of the highlights of the film. All songs are shot as montages and they are peppy. And cinematographer George C Williams camera is eye-catching with terrific visuals and colours.
On the whole, Raja Rani is a film with many merits, but alas it fails to hold it all together. Two hours and forty five minutes have never felt longer.

Verdict: Above Average

Raja Rani - Finally a reasonably well-made love story. A tad too long, but many married couples will be able to relate to the movie.
First half is breezy, hilarious and entertaining. Second half slows down and has many serious moments.
Movie has shades of Sillunu Oru Kaadhal, Mouna Raagam & Engeyum Eppodhum, but who cares, it's fun!

Arya, Jay, Nayanthara, Nazriya, Santhanam, Sathyan - all have done well. Even Satyaraj has done a decent job.
Special mention must be made of the cinematography and music. Well done GV Prakash! A slap in the face for Radha Ravi!

Arya, Jay, Nayanthara, Nazriya, Santhanam, Sathyan - all have done well. Even Satyaraj has done a decent job.
Special mention must be made of the cinematography and music. Well done GV Prakash! A slap in the face for Radha Ravi!

Go for it - if possible with your loved one. Grab some tissues if you are the emotional one. :lol2:

^ While I believe that Radha Ravi was out of line speaking about GVP, one can just not dub him as a guy who is just surviving on his father's name. IMHO, this guy's a solid actor and quite a good dubbing artist. I believe he would never have been given due recognition as an artist considering the constant comparisons with his father. Appdi paatha GVP got initial recognition as ARR's nephew.

NOV, I can understand your angst on GVP being targetted. GVP has had a lot of success lately and he deserves it too. I too believe Radharavi treaded the wrong line. But I have always rated him as an actor. While no patch to his legendary father, he can still hold on his own.

NOV

Radharavi is no alien to making sweeping statements like this. Long time back he targeted composers who go to foreign countries to compose tunes (Read ARR). It is entirely on the director's discretion, he forgot though.

And GVP becoming famous because he is AR's nephew, I doubt it. May be he got an entry into the industry bcoz of ARR's name but from then he is on his own.

Raja Rani - Neat entertainer.

Its definately watchable movie. Its not a feel good entertainer but a feel sympathy entertainer. IMO its a Vikraman movie from 21st century. There are numerous sentimental scenes to prove this theory. All characters did their jobs well, except some overacting by Jai in first half.

BGM by GVP is good, but on songs department he dissapoints. Only Hey baby bit by Gana bala sounds catchy.

Promising debut by Atlee. He is another young director in this field among many talented young directors. Its a good sign to see promising young director who gets a chance to direct a movie in kollywood.

If he had moved on with life, like Arya or Nayan, he wouldn't have been wearing that. And it is shown explicitly that he is still wearing that ring, which implies he didn't marry.

mappi

Looking at the emotional turn around of Jai, I think he is not married. Actually he takes the chair of the "Hero", that hero he mentions few minutes before at Arya. What I deduce from why he did not react at the immigration counter : he saw Arya's name in Nayan's passport, so he completely ignored her. It came as a shock to him when Arya talked to him but he handled the situation taking on attack mode. And the ring does not serve to him as any religious symbol of marriage but he being himself "fearful" does hold on to the ring for both its symbolic marriage representation as well as remembrance.

Raja Rani in France is a hit too. Watched the movie on Saturday with some reasonable crowd. Watched it for Atlee & Jai. Both failed to impress me, maybe its because I am bit allergic to TFI romance genres. No point in whining further. Glad that Atlee's movie is making waves, he deserves this break.
//
Last think I would like to hear from the media is that : SRK is interested and had talked with ARM for a Hindi remake with Rani Mukerjee, Kareena Kapoor, 2 Bachans titled "KAB tak hai jaan". Furthermore, Jai says in his conversation with Arya, that he has a wife.

I think the success of RaRa is because of a dearth of love stories in TF since SOK days

The movie works just as a time pass. From the creation perspective, except few moments there is nothing much to rave about. Satyaraj, Nayathara relationship as father and daughter works quite well. Initial sequences between arya and nayathara is good. Characterization of all the lead actors are fine. The problem with the movie is its predictability and it also constantly reminds mouna ragam every now and there. Though the scenes are new, still it just appears as a rehash of some old movies. Nayathara and Jai love story is impressive upto some extent but Arya, Nazriya love portion didn't impress me at all. Santhanam comedies in the second half are kaatu mokka type.

Adhu ennavo theiryala, many romantic movies climax happens at either railway station or Airport. (I guess, the idea is inherited from Mouna Ragam).

But this movie would surely be a big success. Already many of my colleagues are raving about the movie like anything...

Ranbir-Deepika Padukone To Be King-Queen!

Tamil movie AR Murugadoss produced Raja Rani has taken the youths by storm. The movie has garnered a lot of public attention, thereby keeping the cash registers ringing. Now, the rumours on the remakes of the movie have begun and Bollywood's hottest jodi Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone are being considering for the lead roles.

Rumour mills always have the knack of picking up the bits and pieces that are being discussed by industry men. The latest we hear is about the remake of Raja Rani (Meaning: King and Queen). The success of the movie has made the movie bosses to plan for the remake in the other languages, notably in Bollywood as rom-coms sells well in the Hindi film industry.

AR Murugadoss and his team is reportedly planning to remake Raja Rani in Hindi. If everything goes according to their plans, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone will be starring in the remake of the Tamil movie. The talks for the remake have begun, but the movie bosses want to give some time to start the project.

It is well-known that AR Murugadoss has good contacts in Bollywood. The director, who made his Bollywood debut in Ghajini starring Aamir Khan, is most sought after filmmaker in India.

Watched the movie and it was o.k.

A good attempt at bringing back old-fashioned love that is driven by emotions. Credit to Atlee for trying it.

Good performances from Arya and Nayanthara.

Mouna Raagam needed one memorable cameo from Karthik, which it did while Raja Rani needed two and unfortunately both flashback love-birds Jai and Nazriya were just about o.k. IMO. Except for the climax scene, Jai's portions looked artificial to me.

Despite picking today's IT love as a premises (though the flashback dates back to 2007), Atlee serves us only Rich Girl-Middle Class boy love in one segment, while in the other segment, the girl is an orphan. 'Real' or 'True' love, in Tamil Cinema always have to satisfy any one of the above listed 2 timeless condition it seems, and the new-age Atlee is no-different.

The story lacked depth in either showing the deep/intense love before marriage nor the one that happens after marriage. Both were half-baked IMO.

GVP's background score does lift the scenes to a certain level and for Santhanam, this has to rank as one of his less-emphatic attempts.

Overall, considering the facts that we haven't seen many movies in this genre in the last few years (Yaaradi Nee Mogini comes to mind) and because of decent performances from the lead pair, Raja Rani works to a certain extend. One-time Watch.

Oct 07, 2013

Atlee's Raja Rani managed to keep its momentum intact at the box-office even in its second weekend, despite the release of Vijay Sethupathi's Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara.

After 10 days, the film has managed to gross 32 crores all over the country with Tamil Nadu contributing 25 crores, Kerala - 3 crores and Karnataka - 3.5 crores. These numbers are extraordinary by any means and the film has been declared a superhit already.

The hype around director Atlee is soaring now and all eyes are now on the young man's next film, again under A.R.Murugadoss' production.

Yes . Repeatedly hearing only the romantic songs will be boring. But their are melodious songs which speak about different situations and emotions backed by good lyrics and music interwined. When someone goes through these situations they tend to listen repeatedly to these songs. Unfortunately today all MD's play to the galaries which is predominantly the college going youth of today. Exactly. Consistency is the main aspect which GVP thambi can not maintain so far. Forget about Deva level. He can't even reach the standards which TR music had in 80s.

I had a chance to accompany with one other family in their car for a long travel. There was a mp3 labelled as "GVP hits" which they played. Looks like they burnt it 6 months back. Most of the time the friend in driver seat fast forwarded almost 90% of songs from that mp3 cd. This is what the so called GVP's contribution to the music. They had to switch over to other mp3 tracks they had in car.

Sorry Mahen sir current Indian generation is far from enjoying true music. They are happy eating Khushka and kurma.
Anything hip or hoping as world music in one country , they eat up like good vegan kids eating vegetables in India (whether they understand or not). Current MDs music is just an extension of this trend. Each generation before will claim that they had the best music era ever ! its an on going evolution until Music itself saturates from this planet.

Idolizing is definitely not a bad thing. So is challenging ones claims / works . Some of you guys are worst than teenagers with Condoms (not sure what to do with a debate) you keep blowing it like a balloon. So debate which is intended for a meaningful discussion ends up with crapola fest !

BTW you still didn't answer my question why Mozart is dragged in to Indian MD's discussion.

Still not sure why you dragged Mozart in to Indian (TFI) music discussion !. Listen to my fav composition

“A lot of people ask me where music is going today. I think it's going in short phrases. If you listen, anybody with an ear can hear that. Music is always changing. It changes because of the times and the technology that's available, the material that things are made of, like plastic cars instead of steel. So when you hear an accident today it sounds different, not all the metal colliding like it was in the forties and fifties. Musicians pick up sounds and incorporate that into their playing, so the music that they make will be different.” - Extract from "Miles: The Autobiography" by Miles Davis

Dilbert, I take this opputunity to recomend you (ofcoarse others interested too) these books : The Symphony: A Listener's Guide by Michael Steinberg. He has also authored Concert Band as well as Choral (includes Chamber too).

Wonderful books if you wish to take a closer look on your favorite composition. In a weeks time (for a music fan [or addict as Miles Davis would put it]), you would have already matched the chapters with your listening.

Best post ...Kaathadikadhu maadhriyana paatu poda innoruthan porandhu varanum! I don't know why Deva has been brought into the picture. Perhaps to say he is a bad music director?

In the 90s, after ARR, he was the best and most successful MD and gave Kamal, Rajni, Ajith, Vijay some of the best songs of their career.

yes of course, as far as cinema industry is concerned, success is based on

1. No of films in hand

2. Salary

3. High profile films

But these are just how the director wanted to portray the two characters. Not all men were worthless and not all women were rowdy in the movie.

Already replete? Then the virus injected by the likes of K.Balachander has reached epidemic levels? (Luckily I visit the cities only for short stays! But smaller cities and villages are not at all lagging behind, thanks to our media!) Tragic indeed! Don't you think one or two characters and not all in that model can be enough for the impressionable youth to take as 'role models'?

Do you think movies should only portray characters in certain ways for youths to take as role models? Then we will be left with nothing but bland goody two-shoes. Do you really think youths are not smart enough to understand who to take as role model and who not to? There might be some who will easily be impressionable but for that minority you are saying directors should eliminate their characters personality.

You sadly forget the phenomenon of a sort of gut feeling the reluctant individuals get when even slightly some sanction is understood for not-so-proper practices. I am against showing certain habits, activities, trends as normal, harmless, socially/morally acceptable. Do you think the girls will not embrace the new roguish fashion of their approach to boys? That is something I do not wish to witness in my lifetime. And the booze.... Nothing to feel proud about such debauchery! Media must show accountability, moral responsibility even in providing entertainment to the masses. Do you mean to say clean movies are impossible, have never been made? Dearth of creativity and imagination!:(

not that clean movies cannot be made.....but the movies which has characters that the viewers are able to connect with are the ones that succeed...... remember vikraman movies.... (till priyamana thozhi) ..... all gooders vachu movie eduthu athu flop aanathu than micham (of course it also got to do with his fading skills of screen play making)...... it is inevitable i suppose... and also two-way........movies exaggerate some random bad character prevailing in the society and give it some glamorous touch so that it fascinates viewers, viewers pick up the character qualities and adopt it
