A Brief Study on the Civil Construction Technology of Tamil Nadu from Ancient times
The history of the Tamils of South India could be traced as early as B.C.1250, a period prior to the submergence of a part of the Tamil country with Kumarikkandam around B.C.650 in an Under-Sea Avalanche. Much is not known of the Civil Constructions of the period prior to B.C.650 being the period First Thamil Sangam (B.C.1250-625), as many Literary works and other compositions of this period were lost to us in this sea disaster.
From B.C.650 onwards we have many Tamil Literary Works and compositions being the period of Second Thamil Sangam. The foremost among them other than the Poetic work on Grammer namely the Tholkaappiam, is the collection of Second Tamil Sangam (B.C.650-325) and Third Thamil Sangam (B.C.325-A.D.350) period Poetic Verses compiled in to single volumes named as "Ahanaanooru", "Puranaanooru", "Nattrinai", "Iynkurunooru", "Kurunthohai", "Kaliththokai", "Paripaadal", during the early period of the Third Thamil Sangam in the audience of the Tamil Poets of the Second and Third Thamil Sangams.
In the Third Thamil Sangam period too there came into being the single Tamil compositions in the form of Praise Poem on respective Chera, Chola and Paandiya kings and other Regional Tamils Kings named "Pattinappaalai", "Mathuraikkanchi", "Perumpaanaatruppadai", "Sirupaanaatruppadai", "Porunaraatrupadai", "Nedunelvaadai", "Mullaippaattu", "Kurinchippaattu", "Malaipadukadaam", "Thirumurukaatruppadai" and "Pathitrupppaththu", even though these compositions were not staged in the Third Thamil Sangam.
The Epic Poetic works namely the "Silappathikaaram" and "Manimekalai" too are of the Third Thamil Sangam period even they too were not composed in the audience of the Tamil Poets of the Third Thamil Sangam.
It is from these sources we are to gather informations on the Civil Construction Technology that were in practise in the earliest known periods of Tamil Nadu history.
From the references in the two Tamil Epics "Silappathkaaram" and "Manimekali" we are aware for the first time, of a 'Tamil Architect' of Civil Construction of the period of Third Thamil Sangam by the name "Mayan".

Ancient Construction Technology of Tamil Nadu comprised of setting up of Residentiail Buildings (for Kings and Nobles), Royal Buildings (for Kings his Ministers and Forces Chiefs for their Official Work), Public Buildings (Temples, Utility & Entertainment Buildings), Water conservation Structures (Tanks and River edges).
These can be gleaned from the references in the ancient Tamil Literary Works of Sangam Period on the type of Buildings and Civil Structures that existed during the relevent period.
