Actors taking up challenging roles and living up for it is quite rare, but some do put dedication. Tamil Film industry has these kind of actors - Vikram, Surya, Ajith to say the recent ones.

So by no way its human rights violation. Ofcoarse these guys should take regular care of their health during and after the change over.

What Ajith did in Billa 2 is a life / death matter - that could have been avoided though. But its his choice.

Body building does need enormous mental and physical strain ... but thats not the case here. But the mentioned actors too went into severe regime for certain roles and personal ego (ex: Thirupathi or Paramasivan).
True that Shaam pushed it a bit further doing this kind of act, but still if it repays back bringing him the required stardom, its worth it.
