செப்டம்பர் மாதம் 5-ஆம் தேதி; சனிக்கிழமை இரவு மணி பத்து.

டோக்கியோ நகர ஹனீதா விமான நிலையத்தில், தமிழர்களின் சிறு கூட்டம் ஒன்று காணப்பட்டது. கூடவே, ‘கிமோனோ’ அணிந்த ஜப்பானிய பெண்கள்! எல்லோர் முகத்திலும் புன்னகை; கையில் பூமாலை.


”’ஏர் ஃபிரான்ஸ்’ விமானம் இன்னும் சிறிது நேரத்தில் வரப்போகிறது. இதோ, வந்துவிட்டது. பிரயாணிகள் இறங்கிவிட்டார்கள். பஸ்ஸில் ஏறிவிட்டார் கள். இமிக்ரேஷன் பகுதிக்கு வந்தாகிவிட்டது. கஸ்டம்ஸ் பகுதியைக் கடந்துவிட்டார் கள்…”- டோக்கியோ விமான நிலைய நுழைவாயிலில் உள்ள ஒரு போர்டு இந்தத் தகவல் களைச் சொல்லிக்கொண்டு இருந்தது.












”அதோ, வேஷ்டியும் ஜிப்பாவும் அணிந்து தலையில் குல்லாயுடனும் முகத்தில் புன்னகையுடனும் வரு கிறாரே… அவர்தான் எம்.ஜி.ஆரா? மிகவும் ஸிம்பிளாக இருக்கிறாரே?” – ஜப்பானிய பெண்களின் வியப்புக் கேள்வி.


”அவரேதான்! லட்சக்கணக்கான தமிழ் மக்களின் இதயத்தைக் கொள்ளை கொண்ட புன்னகை அது!” – ஜப்பானில் வாழும் தமிழர்களின் பதில்.
இரவு மணி ஒன்று.


டோக்கியோ. பிரபல இம்பீரியல் ஹோட் டலில் எம்.ஜி.ஆர் குழு இறங்கியது.


டோக்கியோ வாழ் தமிழரான மிஸ்டர் சந்தானம் எல்லோரையும் அழைத்துக்கொண்டு போய், தம் வீட்டில் சுடச்சுட ரசம் சாதமும் அப்பளமும் பரிமாறினார்.
தனக்கென்று அதிக வசதிகள் உள்ள அறையையோ, சௌகரியங்களையோ தேடிக்கொள்ள விரும்ப வில்லை எம்.ஜி.ஆர். மேக்கப் செய்யும் முத்து எங்கே இருந்தாரோ… தம்முடைய உதவியா ளர் எங்கே இருந்தாரோ அங்கேயேதான் அவரும் இருந்தார். வாழைப்பழம் சாப்பிடுவது என்றால் கூட, குழுவிலிருந்த 12 பேருக்கும் கிடைத்தால்தான் அவரும் சாப்பிடுவார். எல்லாவற்றிலும் அப்படி ஒரு சமத்துவம்!


அன்று ஞாயிற்றுக் கிழமை. ‘எக்ஸ்போ’ கண்காட்சியில் கூட்டம் நிறைந்து விட்டது. ”எட்டு லட்சம் பேர் உள்ளே போய்விட்டார் கள். இனிமேல் உள்ளே வர இடம் இல்லை” என்று எலெக்ட்ரானிக் இயந்திரம் அறிவித்துவிட்டது. முக்கியமான ‘கேட்’டுகள் எல்லாம் மூடிக்கொண்டுவிட்டன.


உள்ளே எப்படியாவது போகவேண்டும் என்ற துடிப்பு எம்.ஜி.ஆருக்கு. ஆனால், காவல்காரன் உள்ளே விட சம்மதித்தால்தானே? ஒரு கணம் யோசித்தேன். நேராகக் காவல் நிலைய அதிகாரி ஒருவரை அணுகி, ”இந்தோகா தகஹாஷி ஹிதேகி!” என்றேன். அவர் கண்கள் ஆவலில் மினுமினுத்தன. வியப்போடும் பணிவோடும், அருகில் இருந்த சிறிய கேட் ஒன்றின் வழியே ஸ்பெஷலாக எம்.ஜி.ஆரை உள்ளே அனுப்பி வைத்தார்.


‘தகஹாஷி ஹிதேகி’ என்பவர் ஜப்பானில் புகழ்பெற்ற, எல்லோரும் விரும்புகிற திரைப் பட நடிகர். ‘இந்தியாவின் தகஹாஷி ஹிதேகி’ என்று எம்.ஜி.ஆரை அறிமுகப்படுத்தியதும், அந்த அதிகாரியின் வியப்புக்கும் பணிவுக்கும் கேட்பானேன்?


எக்ஸ்போ கண்காட்சியில் உயரமான கூண்டு ஒன்றின் அருகே ‘ஷூட்டிங்’ நடந்துகொண்டிருந்தது. ஒரு தமிழர் அங்கே வந்து சேர்ந்தார். தமிழ்நாட்டில் சமீபத்தில் நடந்த நிகழ்ச்சிகள், சென்னைச் செய்திகள் எல்லாவற் றையும் சொல்லிவிட்டுக் கடைசி யில், ”ரொம்பப் பணக் கஷ்டம். நீங்கள் ஏதாவது உதவி செய்தால் தேவலை” என்றார்.


உடனே, தன் கால் சராய்ப் பையில் கையை விட்டு 20,000 யென் (சுமார் 400 ரூபாய்) எடுத்துக் கொடுத்துவிட்டார் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். அந்த நபர் போன பிறகு, ”என்ன ஸார் இது? அந்நியச் செலாவணி கிடைப்பது எவ்வளவு கஷ்டம்! நீங்கள்பாட்டுக்கு 400 ரூபாய் மதிப்புள்ள தொகையைத் தூக்கிக் கொடுத்துவிட்டீர்களே?” என்றேன் கொஞ்சம் பதற்றத்துடன்.


”என்ன செய்வேன்? ஒரு தமிழர் வந்து கஷ்டம் என்று கேட்கும்போது மறுக்க எனக்கு மனமில்லை” என்றார் எம்.ஜி.ஆர்.


அந்நியச் செலாவணி சுருக்கமான அயல் நாட்டிலும், கொடுத்துப் பழகிய அவருடைய கை சுருங்கவே இல்லை.


ஜப்பானிலிருந்து ஹாங்காங்குக்குப் புறப்படுகிற நாள்.


அன்று காலையில், பாங்க் ஆஃப் ஜப்பானில் உயர் அதிகாரியாக உள்ள சைகோ என்பவரைச் சந்திப்பதற்காக எம்.ஜி.ஆர். சென் றார். சைகோ, சிறுசேமிப்புத் துறைத் தலைவர். எம்.ஜி.ஆரும் அவரும் சிறுசேமிப்பு பற்றிக் கருத் துப் பரிமாறிக்கொண்டார்கள். அந்தச் சந்திப்பு முடிந்ததும் டோக்கியோவில் உள்ள இந்தியத் தூதரைப் பார்க்கச் சென்றார். அவரோடு பேசி முடித்துவிட்டுக் கிளம்பியபோது மணி 11.30. பிற்பகல் 2 மணிக்கு விமானம்.


இந்தியத் தூதுவரின் அந்தரங் கக் காரியதரிசியான ஜெயராம னின் வீட்டுக்குப் போனோம். அவர் மனைவி அப்போது ஊரில் இல்லாததால், அவரே சமைத்து ஃபிரிஜ்ஜில் வைத்திருந்த சாப்பாட்டை எடுத்துத் தந்தார். சாம் பார், ரசம், தயிர் போட்டுச் சாப்பிட்டார் எம்.ஜி.ஆர்.


அதன்பின், விமான நிலையம் கிளம்பினோம்.


ஜப்பானில் எம்.ஜி.ஆர் இருந்த பத்துப் பதினைந்து நாட்களும் அவர் ஒரு சுதந்திர மனிதராக நடமாடினார். தெருக்களில் காலாற நடந்தார். எலெக்ட்ரிக் ட்ரெயினில் நின்றுகொண்டு பிரயாணம் செய்தார். வெகு வருஷங்களுக்குப் பிறகு கிடைத்த சுதந்திரம்… பரிபூரணமான சுதந்திரம்..!

ஹாங்காங் வந்து சேர்ந்ததுமே எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் சுதந்திரம் பறிக்கப் பட்டுவிட்டது.


காரணம் – விமான நிலையத்தில் நிறைய தமிழர்களும், வேறு பல இந்தியர்களும் எம்.ஜி.ஆரை வரவேற்பதற்காக வந்து கூடியிருந் தார்கள். பலர் மாலை அணிவித் தார்கள். பலர் கட்டித் தழுவி முத்தமிட்டார்கள்.


ஜப்பான் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். ஹாங்காங் வந்ததும், தமிழ்நாட்டு எம்.ஜி.ஆர். ஆகிவிட்டார்.


”ஏதேது..! இங்கே படப்பிடிப்பே வைத்துக்கொள்ள முடியாது போலிருக்கே!” என்று எம்.ஜி.ஆரே சொல்லும் அளவுக்கு ஹாங்காங் விமான நிலையத்தில் ரசிகர்களின் அன்புத்தொல்லை ஆரம்பமாகி விட்டது.


அதைப் பார்த்தபோது என் மனத்தில் ஏற்பட்ட எண்ணம் இதுதான்…


எம்.ஜி.ஆர். இன்னும் ஓரிரு மாதங்கள் ஜப்பானில் இருந்திருந்தால், அங்கேயும் இப்படிப்பட்ட ரசிகர் கூட்டம் உருவாகிவிடும்!

Vijaya Publications have released a paper back edition of MGR’s experience in filming “Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban” as “எம்.ஜி.ஆர், எழுதிய உலகம் சுற்றும் வாலிபன் உருவான கதை”. MGR wrote his overseas film shooting experience in Bommai Magazine from July 1971 to September 1972 titled “திரை கடலோடித் திரைப்படம் எடுத்தோம்”

I was searching this article for several years because this is the only literary work completed by MGR. All other works such as his Biography நான் ஏன் பிறந்தேன்?, என் காதலி etc were unfinished due to several reasons to name one is, after the party formation in 1972.

This book contains about 14 chapters it starts from getting permission from the Indian Government and how they procrastinated.

MGR narrates about how many of his fans were waiting near the Airport and the same when the plane takes off that he saw only the crowd beneath. Apart from MGR Fans the people who came to wish him for his success are N.T.Ramarao, Director Krishnan Panju, Actors Srikanth and Gemini Ganesan, Director and Producer Banthalu and also the Chief Minister of Tamilnadu Karunanidhi.

In the second chapter MGR tells about the outline of the story, real life characters of his Heroines from Chandrakala, Manjula and Latha. And also he tells us how much responsibility he has in taking care the whole crew which appears a Himalayan task at that time.



We will come to know about the hilarity of Nagesh and Asokan in Plane. How many airplanes they changed to reach Osaka for Expo 70.

The first shot in Expo 70 was taken on 8.9.1970 and the next day is the “Ulagam azhagu” song was shot, MGR explains how the shot was done and how many hours the crew spent in taking that particular first stanza of the song.


MGR also mentions the part played by Director P.Neelakandan in filming Ulagam Sutrum Valiban and MGR highlights the one take of MGR, Chandrakala, Nagesh, Asokan and MGR, Manjula in Expo 70 and he describes the situation how other actors co-operated.

The book ends with Hong Kong shots and how a Indian helped MGR in making the song and scenes in his own house.

The book has several unseen images, deleted scenes from Ulagam Sutrum Valiban, behind the scenes. I have upload some of the images for you.

A special mention is about the writing skill of MGR I have read some of his literary works in every work his writing skill is like conversing with us and not just a write up. This book is no different. When we read a chapter in some places our mind will ask a question, that question will be in the next sentence and when MGR explains that question some times we find a doubt and that same doubt will be in next line. It appears that we are not reading the book, it is like MGR talking to us.

எம்.ஜி.ஆர். அவர்களின் படங்களில் பாட்டுப் புத்தகங்களில் முதலிடம் பெற்றது மட்டுமின்றி வெளியான போது மிக பிரபலமானது, எங்க வீட்டுப் பிள்ளை படத்தின் பாட்டுப் புத்தகம். இதை தங்களுடன் பகிர்ந்து கொள்வதில் மகிழ்ச்சியடைகிறேன். தங்கள் அனைவரையும் இது அந்தக் காலத்திற்கே அழைத்துச் செல்லும். அப்போது வாங்கி வைத்து பத்திரப் படுத்தி வைத்த சில பாட்டுப் புத்தகங்களில் ஒன்று. படத்திற்கு என்ன வயதாகிறதோ அதே அளவு காலகட்டமாக என்னிடம் உள்ளது இந்தப் புத்தகம். நடுவில் ஒரே ஒரு பக்கம் மிகவும் பழுதாகி எம்.ஜி.ஆர். அவர்களின் முகப் பகுதியில் சேதமடைந்திருப்பதால் அந்தப் பக்கத்தை மட்டும் தரவேற்ற முடியவில்லை.

MGR Speech

Below is the part of the speech delivered by MGR in front of highly educated people in Chennai Manavazhagar Mandram Muthamil Vizha held in the year 1964. He spoke for two days yes, not two hours. Without any body help and any hints.

வைத்திய நிபுணரிடம் ஒரு கத்தியைக் கொடுத்து, அறுத்து விடு என்று கூறுவதற்கும் ஒரு கொலைகாரனிடம் கத்தியைக் கொடுத்து அறத்துவிடு என்பதற்கும் அதிக வித்தியாசமிருக்கிறது. இதன் பொருளை இடம், பொருள், ஏவலாகத்தான் எடுத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும். அறுத்து விடு என்பது ஒரு கருத்தைத்தான் எடுத்துக் காட்டுகிறது என்றாலும் வைத்தியனிடம் கொடுக்கப்படும் கத்தி ஒரு குழந்தையின் வாழ்வுக்கு வழி செய்வதாக அமையும். அதே போல, கொலைகாரனிடம் கொடுக்கப்பட்ட கத்தி, ஒன்று மறியாத குழந்தையைக் கொலை செய்யப் பயன்படும் என்ற வித்தியாசம் இருப்பதை உணரலாம். உண்மையான பொருளை ஒரு வார்த்தையில் அடைத்துவிட முடியாது.

அடிமை என்ற சொல்லுக்கும் பல பொருள்கள் இருக்கலாம். அடிமை என்பவன் பிறருக்கு ஏவலனாக ஆக்கப்பட்டவன் என்றும் கூறலாம். பொதுவாக அடிமை என்பதற்குத் தொண்டு செயல் என்ற பொருளையும் கொள்ளலாம்.

வாழ்வுக்கும் எண்ணத்திற்கும் வரம்பு கட்டி விட்டால், அதையும் அடிமையென்று சொல்லத்தானே வேண்டும்?

கருத்துக்குக் கருத்து விவாதிக்க வேண்டும் அதற்குப் பிறகே ஒரு முடிவைச் சொல்ல வேண்டும். அதை விட்டு விட்டு, எல்லாம் எனக்குத் தெரியும் என்று ஆட்சிப் பீடத்திலிருப்போர் தம் கருத்தையே சாதித்தால் அது மற்றவரை அடிமைப்படுத்துகிற செய்கைதானே நீதி மன்றத்திற்கு வருவதற்கு முன்னரே, நீதிபதி தீர்ப்பபை எழுதி விடுகிறார் என்றால் என்ன அர்த்தம்? இப்படி இருக்கலாமா சுதந்திர நாட்டில்?

மக்களால் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ள ஆட்சியாளர் ஆட்சிப் பீடமேறிய பிறகு, மக்களை அடிமையாக அவர்களைப் பலவந்தபடுத்திக் கருத்துக்களைத் திணிக்கின்றனர். இதுதான் நாம் பெற்ற சுதந்திரமா?

தொண்டு என்பது விரும்பி ஏற்றுக் கொள்வது, அடிமை என்பது அடிமைகளாக ஆக்கிக் கொள்ளுகிற, அல்லது ஆக்கப்படுகிற நிலை.

கட்சிக்கு அடிமைகளாக்க நிர்ப்பந்தப்படுத்துகிறார்கள். இன்று நாட்டிலே உள்ள நிலைமை இது. ஆட்சியினரிடத்திலே எந்தக் கருத்தை சொல்வதற்கும் அதிகாரம் இல்லாமல் மக்கள் பேசாமலிருக்கிறார்களென்றால், அடிமைத்தனம் என்பதுதான் பொருளே தவிர, அது தொண்டு அல்ல.

நான் திராவிட முன்னேற்றக் கழகத்தின் உன்னத இலட்சியத்திற்கு என்னைத் தொண்டனாக ஆக்கிக் கொண்டவன். நான் விரும்பி ஏற்றுக் கொணட் தலைவன் முன்னால் தொண்டனாக இருக்கிறேன்.

மக்கள் குறைகளை மந்திரிகளிடம் கூற வந்தால், அதைக் கேட்காமல், ஆறுதல் கூடக் கூறாமல் அலட்சியமாக இருப்பது சுதந்திரம் பெற்றதற்கு அடையாளமா? ஏழைகள் வாழ்வை ஏற்ற செய்ய வேண்டிய அமைச்சர்கள், அவர்களை மென்மேலும் வாட்டி வதைக்கும் போக்கில் அரசு செலுத்தும் போது, சுதந்திரம் என்பது வெறும் கேலிக் கூத்தென்பது தவிர வேறென்ன?

மக்களால் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டு ஆட்சி பீடத்தில் உள்ளவர்கள், மக்களை அடிமைகளாக நினைக்கும் அவல நிலை மாறினாலன்றிச் சுதந்திரம் என்ற சொல்லுக்கு அடிமை என்றே பொருள் கொள்ள வேண்டும்.

இப்படிப்பட்ட அவருடைய படத்தைப் பார்க்கும் போதெல்லாம், சுவாமி விவேகானந்தரின் உருவம்தான் என் நினைவுக்கு வரும். அப்படிப் பட்டவர், பட்டாபி சீதாராமை எதிர்த்து, அகில இந்திய காங்கிரசின் தலைவர் பதவிக்குப் போட்டி இட்டார்.

வெற்றி நேதாஜிக்குத்தான்! ஆனால், முடிவு அறிவிக்கப்பட்டவுடன், காந்திஜி, "பட்டாபி தோல்வி, என் தோல்வி...' என்று சொன்னார்; காங்கிரஸ் கட்சியே அதிர்ந்தது. அரசியலைப் பற்றி எதுவும் சரியாகப் புரியாத எனக்குக் கூடக் கலக்கம்.

"அப்படியானால், நேதாஜி, காந்திஜியின் நம்பிக்கைக்குப் பாத்திரமானவர் இல்லையா?' என்ற கேள்வியால் ஏற்பட்டதல்ல அக்கலக்கம்.

காந்திஜியின் மனதில் கூட தனக்கு வேண்டியவர், வேண்டாதவர் என்ற எண்ணத்திற்கு இடமிருக்கிறதா!

காந்திஜியைப் பற்றி விமர்சனம் செய்ய எனக்கு சிறிதும் அருகதை இல்லை என்பதை உண்மையாக இப்போதும் உணர்ந்தவனே ஆனாலும், அவர் மீது நான் வைத்திருந்த நம்பிக்கையில் ஒரு சிறு விரிசல், எப்படியோ என், உலகம் அறியாத உள்ளத்தில் ஏற்பட்டு விட்டது.

திரும்பத் திரும்ப என்னை நானே கேட்டுக் கொண்டேன்... "காந்திஜிக்கு கூட இப்படித் தோன்ற இயலுமா?' என்று. ஆனால், "விருப்பு வெறுப்புகளைப் பாராது, வேண்டியவர், வேண்டாதவன் என்பதைப் பற்றி கவலைப்படாது, தன் தூய லட்சியத்திற்கு சேவை செய்கிறவர்கள் யார் என்பதைத் தெரியப்படுத்தாவிட்டால், தன்னைப் பின்பற்றுகிறவர்கள் தவறான பாதையில் அழைத்துச் செல்லப்படும் நிலை ஏற்பட்டு விடுமானால், தன் லட்சியமே தவறான பாதைக்கு இழுக்கப்பட்டு விடுமானால், அதை எப்படி அந்தப் புனித உள்ளம் அனுமதிக்கும்; ஏற்கும்?' என்று இன்னொரு மனம் சொல்லிற்று.

இதையும் என் உள்ளம் எனக்கு அறிவுறுத்தாமலில்லை. இருப்பினும், ஏதோ ஒரு பெரிய ஏமாற்றம். அதிலும், மகாத்மாவை வணங்கிப் பதவியேற்றுப் பேசிய நேதாஜியின் பேச்சு, எனக்கு மேலும் நேதாஜியின் மேல் அனுதாபத்தையே ஏற்படுத்தியது.

அவர் பதவியிலிருந்து விலகியது என்னை மீளாத் துன்பத்துக்குள்ளாக்கியது என்றால் பொருத்தமுடையதே ஆகும்.

நான் காங்கிரஸ் கட்சியிலிருந்து விலகுவதற்கு இது மட்டும்தான் காரணம் என்றில்லாவிட்டாலும், இதுவும் ஒரு காரணம் என்று சொல்வதில் தவறில்லை.

A short story written by MGR.

MGR wrote an article titled “After Fame” (புகழுக்குப்பின்) in 1961. This is an extract from the article. MGR narrates a small story how a person should lead the life, how much fame lasts in this world.

ஒரு ஊரில் ஒரு சிறுவன் இருந்தான். அவன் புகழ் பெற்ற ஒரு திறமைசாலியைக் கண்டான். அந்தத் திறமைசாலி மாடு பிடிப்பதில் மாவீரன். இவனுக்கு அவன் மீது அளவற்ற பற்று ஏற்பட்டது. அந்த திறமைசாலிக்கு ஒரு நாள் மிகப் பெரிய வரவேற்பு அளிக்கப்பட்டது. பெரும் மகிழ்ச்சி ஆரவாரத்தோடு திறமைசாலியைப் போற்றிப் புகழ்ந்தனர் மக்கள். சிறுவனும் உள்ளம் பூரித்துத் திறமைசாலியைப் போற்றினான்.

அந்தத் திறமைசாலியை ஒரு முறையாவது தொட்டு மகிழ வேண்டுமென்ற ஆர்வம் அவனுக்கு ஏற்பட்டது. அப்படி ஒரு வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்து விட்டால் அதுவே தன் வாழ்வில் பெறக்கூடிய பெரும் பாக்கியமாகக் கருதினான். அந்தப் பாக்கியத்தைப் பெறுவதற்காக அவன் எடுத்த முயற்சி மிகப் பெரியதாக இருந்தது.

காலம் சுழன்றது.

இப்போது சிறுவன் வாலிபனானான். இவனுக்கு இருந்த ஆர்வத்தால் இவனே பெரிய திறமைசாலியானான். சந்தர்ப்பமும் கிடைத்தது திறமையைக் காட்ட…

நாளடைவில் மிகப் பிரபலமானவனாக மாறி, ஏராளமான புகழ் மாலைகள் சூட்டப்பட்டான்.

ஒரு நாள் இந்த புதிய திறமைசாலியான வாலிபனுக்கு மாபெரும் வரவேற்பு விழா நடந்தது. இவனை பலரும் சூழ்ந்து கொண்டார்கள். எல்லாருக்கும் தர்மம் செய்து கொண்டே வந்தான். அப்போது ஒரு பிச்சைக்காரன் அவனிடம் காசு கேட்டதோடு உன் புகழாவது நிலையானதாக இருக்கட்டும் என்று வாழ்த்துக் கூறவே, வாலிபன் அவனை உற்று நோக்கினான்.

அவனுக்குத் திகைப்பாகி விட்டது. காரணம் இது தான். முன்பு யாரைத் தொடுவதைப் பெரிய பாக்கியமாக இவன் கருதினானோ, அவனே தான் இப்போது இவனிடம் பிச்சை கேட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்தான்.

வருவான், போவான் என்பவை வாழ்க்கையின் இரு வினை முற்றுக்கள். அவை திரும்பத் திரும்ப வரும் போகும் இதுவே இயற்கை.

ஆகவே கலைஞர்களைப் பொறுத்த வரையில் திறமையைக் காண்பிப்பதிலே போட்டியேற்படுவதில் தவறில்லை. ஆனால் இன்னொருவனுடைய திறமை தன்னுடைய அழிவுக்குக் காரணமென்று நினைப்போமானால் – நம்மையும் நம்மை ஆட்டிப்படைக்கிற சக்தியையும் ஏமாற்றுகிறோம் என்று தான் பொருள்.

வசதியாக இல்லாத காலத்தில் கூட எம்.ஜி.ஆர். மற்றவர்களுக்கு அதிகம் உதவியிருக்கிறார்கள். தன்னை நேசித்தவர்களுக்கன்றி தன்னை பகைத்தவர்களுக்கும் அவர் அதிகம் உதவியது எனக்கே தெரியும். உதாரணம் சொல்ல தேவையில்லை.

எல்லோருக்குக்ம் மரியாதை தருவது என்பது அவருடன் பிறந்த ஒரு பெரிய குணம். யாராயிருந்தாலும் அவர்களுக்குரிய மரியாதையை தர அவர் தயங்கியதே இல்லை.

இந்த எண் மாற்றத்தைப் புரிந்து கொள்ளுங்கள் - லஞ்ச ஊழலாட்சியைத் தமிழக மக்கள் தூக்கி எறிந்தது 1967 - 1976. இருமுறையும் அமரர் அண்ணாவின் கொள்கையை மக்கள் ஏற்றுக் கொண்டனர் என்ற வரலாறு உருவாக்கப்பட்டு விட்டதாக உலகம் இப்போதே பேசுகிறது. எத்தனை பேர்களைக் கொலைக்காரக் கொடுமையாளர்களால் பலி வாங்கிவிட முடியும்? நூறா? ஆயிரமா? பத்தாயிரமா? ஒரு லட்சம் என்றே வைத்துக் கொள்வோம் இப்போதே அண்ணா தி.மு.கழகத்தில் ஏறத்தாழ பதினேழு லட்சம் உறுப்பினர்கள் இருக்கிறோம். மீதியுள்ள கழகக் கண்மணிகளாகிய நம்மை என்ன செய்து விட முடியும்? அப்போது சட்டம் இந்த கொலைக்கார, கொள்ளைக்கார கும்பலை நேர்மையின் உதவியுடன் நீதியின் முன் நிறுத்தும் நியாயச் சட்டமும் உங்களின் உரமிக்க கொள்கைப் பிடிப்பில் வலிவும், இப்போது நம்மைத் துன்பத்திற்குள்ளாக்கும் தீயவர்களைச் சுட்டெரிக்கும். ஆம் இந்தத் தமிழகத்தில் இதுவரை இந்தத் துன்மதியாளர்களினால் ஏற்படுத்தப்பட்ட களங்கம் துடைக்கப்படும்.

(1) அரசியல், கலை இரண்டுக்குமுள்ள வேறுபாடு என்ன?


எம்.ஜி.ஆர் பதில் - அரசியல் மேடை அரசியலுக்காக உள்ளது. சமூக, பொருளாதாரத்தைப் பாதுகாக்க இயங்கும் ஒரு அமைப்பு அரசியல். கலை மேடை கலைக்காக உள்ளது. மனித உணர்ச்சிகளை நேர்மையான வகையில் உருவாக்கவும், கட்டுப்படுத்தவும், சோர்வுற்ற மனித உள்ளத்திற்கு அமைதியைக் கொடுக்கவும், மறந்துவிட்ட பண்பினை நினைவு படுத்தவும் தெரிய வேண்டிய உண்மைகளை உணர்த்தவும், வாழ வேண்டிய முறைகளை வகுத்துக் கொடுக்கவும், வாழ்க்கை நிலையிலுள்ள ஏற்றத்தாழ்வுகளை அகற்றிச் சமத்துவ போதனை செய்யவும் உள்ளது கலை.

எம்.ஜி.ஆர் பதில் - விலைமதிக்க முடியாத முத்துக்களோடு விவரமறிய முடியாத எத்தனையெத்தனையோ விந்தைப் பொருள்களை யெல்லாம் தன்னகத்தே மறைத்து வைத்துக் கொண்டு, அலைக்கரங்களால் மண்ணைத் தழுவியும் தழுவாமலும், ஒரு நிலையில் ஒருபோதும் அமைதியாக இருக்க முடியாத ஆழ்கடல் போன்றவர் ராஜாஜி என்று கூறலாம் அல்லவா.


(3) பெரியாரை எதற்கு ஒப்பிடலாம்?

எம்.ஜி.ஆர் பதில் - தானும் வளர்ந்து, தன்னில் தோன்றும் விழுதுகளையும் தனித்து ஊன்றச் செய்து, தன்னில் வந்து ஒதுங்குவோருக்கெல்லாம் (அவர்கள் கள்வர்களாகவும் இருக்கலாம் களவு கொடுத்தவர்களாகவும் இருக்கலாம்) நிழல் தரும் ஆலமரத்திற்கு ஒப்பிடலாம்.

(4) தமிழ்நாட்டில் வறுமை அடியோடு தீரும் நிலை என்று பிறக்கும்?

எம்.ஜி.ஆர் பதில் - எல்லா வளங்களும் இருந்து அன்புவளம், பண்புள்ள அறிவு வளம் ஆகியவை இரண்டுமே அதிக அளவில் வற்றாத ஊற்றுப் போல் சுரக்கும் நிலையில் இன்றைய தமிழ்நாடு இருக்கின்ற காரணத்தால், அதன் வளமெல்லாம் சுரண்டப்படுவதை கூடப் பெருந்தன்மையோடு பொறுத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது. அந்த அன்பும் பண்புள்ள அறிவும் எந்த அளவுக்கு எத்தகையவரிடம், எவ்விதம் செலுத்தப்பட வேண்டும் என்று தமிழ்நாடு என்றைக்கு முடிவு செய்து செயற்படுமோ, அன்று தான் வறுமை அடியோடு தீரும் நிலை பிறக்கும்.



(5) சிறந்த பேச்சாளராக விளங்க நாங்கள் கடைபிடிக்க வேண்டிய வழிமுறை பற்றி விரிவாக விளக்கவும்?

எம்.ஜி.ஆர் பதில் - ஒரு கொள்கையில் பரிபூரண நம்பிக்கை வேண்டும். அந்தக் கொள்கை பற்றிய விரிவான - ஆழமான விளக்கங்களை அறிந்திருக்க வேண்டும், எந்த மொழியில் கருத்துக்களை வெளியிட விரும்புகின்றோமோ அந்த மொழியில் பேசும்போது வார்த்தைப் பஞ்சம் இல்லாமல் இருக்க வேண்டும். நமது பேச்சைக் கேட்கின்றவர்கள் அதிசயத்தோடு கவனிக்காமல் அக்கறையோடு கவனிக்கும்படி பேச வேண்டும்.

(7) உங்கள் ரசிகர்களுக்கு நீங்கள் கூறும் அறிவுரை என்ன?

எம்.ஜி.ஆர் பதில் - ரசிகர்களுக்கு நான் விடுக்கும் வேண்டுகோள் ஒன்றே ஒன்று தான் உண்மையான ரசிகர்களாக இருக்க வேண்டும். வேறு குழப்பங்களில் சிக்கிக் கொண்டு தேவையற்ற விபரீதத்திற்கு ஆளாகி விடக்கூடாது.

சுதந்திர தின விழாவில் வானொலி, தொலைக்காட்சி ஆகியவற்றில் பரட்சித்தலைவர் உரை.


நாம் வடுதலை பெற்றது ஏதோ நேற்று நடந்தது போல் இருக்கிறது. நாம் விடுதலை பெற்று 34 ஆண்டுகள் ஒடிவிட்டன.


விடுதலை பெற்ற அன்றைக்கு 1947ம் ஆண்டு ஆகஸ்ட் திங்கள் 15ம் நாள் நள்ளிரவில் அமரர் பண்டித நேரு அவர்கள் இன்று உலகம் துயில் கொண்டிருக்கும் இந்த நள்ளிரவு நேரத்தில் இந்தியா சுதந்திரத்திற்குள் விழித்தெழுகிறது என்று குறிப்பிட்டார்கள்.


அமரர் டாக்டர்.ராதாகிருஷ்ணன் அவர்கள் முதல் தவறுகளுக்காக நாம் வெள்ளைக்காரர்களை குற்றம் சாட்டவோ குறை சொல்லவோ இயலாது என்றார்கள்.


என்றைக்கோ எப்போதோ பேசப்பட்ட அவர்களின் வார்த்தைகளை இன்றைக்கும் நினைத்து பார்ப்பதற்கு நாம் கடமைபட்டவர்களாக இருக்கின்றோம்.

பெண்ணிற் பெருந்தக்க யாவுள? என்று ஒரு வினாவைத் தொடுத்து, அதற்கு ஒரு நிபந்தனையாக கற்பென்னும் திண்மை உண்டாகப் பெறின், என்று விதிவகுத்தார் திருவள்ளுவர். கற்பு என்ற ஒரு சொல்லில் எல்லா நற்பண்புகளுமே அடங்கும் என்ற உண்மையை உறுதிபடுத்தவே கற்பென்னும் திண்மை என்று வலியுறுத்திக் கூறினார் வள்ளுவர். பெண் கற்புடன் அதாவது, நற்பண்புகளுடன் விளங்கினால் அவளைக் கைப்பிடித்த ஆண் மகனின் வாழ்வு விளங்கும். அது மட்டுமல்ல, அந்தப் பெண்ணும், ஆணும் சேர்ந்து வாழும் வாழ்வினால், அவர்களின் குடுமப்ம் ஒரு கோயிலாக ஒளி வீசும். அந்த இல்லற ஆலயத்தில் இல்லை, என்ற குறை இராது. இன்பம் பொங்கிப பெருகும். இதனால் இவர்கள் வாழும் ஊர் விளங்கும். இவர்கள் பிறந்த நாடு உயரும். நாட்டில் நல்லறங்கள் செழிக்கும். செல்வம் கொழிக்கும். பெண் என்ற ஒரு சக்தி சமுதாயத்தின் கண் என்று சொல்லத்தக்க அளவுக்கு ஆற்றலுடையதாக இருப்பதை உலகம் என்றுமே அறிந்து பாராட்டியுள்ளது. ஆண் அறிவும், ஆற்றலும் நிரம்பப் பெற்றவனாக இருப்பினும். அவனுக்கு வாய்க்கும் பெண் எழிலும், ஏற்றமும் பெற்றிந்தால் மட்டும் போதாது. எல்லா நற்பண்புகளுக்கும், பிறப்பிடமாகத் திகழ்ந்தேயாக வேண்டும். இல்லையென்றால், அதாவது எதிரிடையான குணங்களைப் பெற்றிருந்தால், இருவருடைய வாழ்வுமே பாதிக்கப்படும். இல்லறமும், நல்லறமாக இராது.

"உலகம் சுற்றும் வாலிபன்', "எங்கள் வீட்டுப் பிள்ளை', "மதுரை வீரன்' என எல்லாப் படங்களும் பிடிக்கும்.
அதில்... "அலிபாபாவும் நாற்பது திருடர்களும்' படம் ரொம்ப ரொம்ப பிடிக்கும். நான் பார்த்த பொழுதுபோக்குப் படங்களில் ரசனையான படம் அதுதான். இப்போது வரை ""திறந்துடு சீசே... வசனத்தின் வரிகள் மனசில் பச்செக்கென ஒட்டியிருக்கு. சினிமாவின் தொழில்நுட்பம் வளராத கட்டத்தில் வந்த அந்த சினிமா, இப்போதுள்ள பிரம்மாண்டங்களை விட எனக்கு பெரிதாகத் தெரிகிறது. இப்போது அந்த படத்தை ரீமேக் செய்ய பெரும் தொகை பிடிக்கலாம். ஆனால் நடக்க வேண்டும் என்று வேண்டிக்கொள்கிறேன்

Some more information from unfinished MGR Movie Inaithakaigal

By the end of 1969 that is after the successful release of Adimai Penn, MGR went on to make a movie under the Banner MGR Productions “Inaintha Kaigal”. The story was inspired from a Hindi film Prithiviraj Kapoor's “Daktha Mansoor”. The story is real one from the life of Muslim Chief Mansoor who lived in Iran.

Arrangements were made the story draft was changed 3 times before it went on to shooting stage. N.T.Ramarao was booked for the Telugu version of this movie. A grand function was held in Sathya studios on the first day shooting of the movie, presided by Kalaignar Karunanidhi.The crew involved in this movie are M.S.Viswanathan – Music, Lyrics by Vali and Pulavar Vedha, Camera by V.Ramamurthy, Story – Syed Hajah Mohideen alias Ravindran, Dialogues by Sornam, Jambu for Editing, Stunts by Shyam Sundar, Arts by Anga Muthu and Direction by Chanakya.

Story : Mansoor was born in Royal family, circumstances make Mansoor and his mother get separated from the family. Mansoor was raised by a Poor man named Moosa. Mansoor becomes a thief for living. Years roll by, Mansoor helps the poor and needy by giving them food, care and money, and stand for their cause and against the reigning King. An incident happens that he becomes changed man when he falls in Love with a girl who is a princess. Her father is Harun Al Rashid. Mansoor gets to know his birth mystery. He get assisted by his Lover. A greater task was kept in front of Mansoor to provide water to her Kingdom. He triumphantly performs the task by breaking the mountain with that he gets to know about his Mother and finds her and finally the throne he rightly owned.

MGR planned to introduce Iranian Actress as the heroine for this movie.

Four songs were recorded three usual movie songs and one lengthy Kavali type song. The songs such as
a. Nilavu Oru Pennagi (the song later used in Ulagam Sutrum Valiban – MGR and Manjula)
b. Aval Oru Navarasa Nadagam (this song also used in Ulagam Sutrum Valiban – MGR and Latha the one with water ballad)
c. Konjam Neram Ennai Marenthan (this song was used in Sirithu Vazha Vendum – MGR and Latha, remember both of them in lots of costumes for that song)

A forest set was made in Sathya Studio and shots were taken as MGR saving four girls and some dialogue scene between MGR and orphan children.

When the shots in studio were completed MGR asked Chitra Krishnasamy to get the permission from the Iran Government to shoot the movie in their country. The situation changed when Chitra Krishnasamy went to meet the Government they asked the story, after reading the story they denied permission. The reason the then Iran country was ruled by a King, it is capital punishment to mock a King or telling a story a thief becoming a King. King and Queen are highly placed and they do not want such a story to be shot in their country. Chitra Krishnasamy returned home and he told the sad story.

Story writer had a chance meeting Fartheen an International actor who is also one of the member from the Royal Family and asked can he do any help regarding picturising the movie. He firmly said you can ask the King to give the greatest treasures from his kingdom but not this kind of story. We are very strict we did not like disrespecting the King and Queen. You might have seen that all the foreign movies running in Iran are dubbed and released in Persian language. The Censor board is very powerful than our Police. I cannot help regarding this movie.

Then MGR made a 4th draft changing the back drop to India. Some characters are to be deleted and new ones to be created. When M.G.Chakrapani was asked to take the role of the King Rashid he did not accept and went on to take the role of Poor Moosa. He acted in the role of raising the child character Mansoor because he desired to raise MGR's son in real life but that did not happen for that he wanted to act as Poor Moosa to raise MGR's son in reel life. 5th draft was made and Actress Geethanjali acted with MGR for some scenes.

The movie was dropped the reason unknown then MGR went on to make “Ulagam Sutrum Valiban”.

MGR asked the story department for lavishness in the movie. Imagine the scene of breaking the mountain and the rushing water in those days. 3 Dream songs in Iranian back drop. The sets are inspired from Arabian Nights story. Costumes that MGR used is very different and shows individuality. Apart from the head dress MGR keeps the knife padded in his throat.

பாக்தாத் நகரின் ஆடல் அழகி மார்ஜியானா. அவளது ஆடல் பாடலில் மயங்கியவர்களில் ஒருவன் ஷேர்கான். இவன் அமிர்காசிம்கானின் தளபதி. ஷேர்கான் அவளை அரண்மனைக்கு இழுத்துச் செல்ல முயற்சிக்கிறான். அப்போது அங்கு வந்த அலிபாபா என்ற இளைஞன் ஷேர்கானை விரட்டி அடிக்கிறான். அலிபாபாவின் வீரத்தை பார்த்த மார்ஜியானா தன் மனதைப் பறி கொடுக்கிறாள்.
அலிபாபாவின் தங்கை ஆயிஷாவும் உடன் இருக்கிறாள். அவள் வேண்டுகோளுக்கிணங்கி, மார்ஜியானாவையும், அவளது உதவியாளர்களான தெüலத்தையும் அழைத்து வந்து தன் வீட்டிலே அடைக்கலம் கொடுக்கிறான் அலிபாபா.

காட்டுக்குச் சென்று விறகு வெட்டி கழுதை மேல் ஏற்றிக் கொண்டு வந்து விற்பது அலிபாபாவின் தொழில். ஒரு நாள் அலிபாபாவின் கழுதை திடீரென்று ஓடிவிட, அதைத் தேடி காட்டுக்குள் போகிறான். அங்கே பெரிய கொள்ளைக் கூட்டத்துத் தலைவன் அபுஹுசேன் "அண்டா காகஸம் அபு காகஸம், திறந்திடு சீசேம்' என்று சொல்லவே, ஒரு மலை குகை கதவு திறந்து கொள்கிறது. உள்ளே போனவுடன் "மூடிடு சீசே' என்கிறான். கதவு மூடிக் கொள்கிறது. அவன் சொன்னதை மனதிற்குள் அலிபாபா சொல்லிப் பார்த்துக் கொள்கிறான்.

அபுஹுசேனும், அவனது குழுவினரும் குகையை விட்டு வெளியே சென்றதை மறைந்திருந்து பார்த்த அலிபாபா, அந்த குகை முன்னால் போய் நின்று அந்த கடவு வார்த்தைகளை பலமாகச் சொல்கிறான். குகைக் கதவு திறந்து கொள்கிறது. உள்ளே போய்ப் பார்க்கிறான். எங்கு பார்த்தாலும் தங்கக் காசுகளும், வைர ஆபரணமும் குவியல்களாக இருக்கின்றன. அவற்றை மூட்டையாகக் கட்டி, கழுதை சுமக்கும் அளவுக்கு பொதிகளாக்கி வீடு திரும்புகிறார்கள்.

அலிபாபா பெரும் பணக்காரனாகிறான். பணத்தை ஏழை எளியவர்களுக்கு வாரி வழங்குகிறான். ஏழைகள் அலிபாபாவை ஒரு கடவுளாக நேசிக்கத் தொடங்குகிறார்கள். இதை அறிந்த அலிபாபாவின் சகோதரன் அமீர் அவன் மீது பாசம் கொண்டவனாக நடித்து, குகையை திறக்கும் சொல்லைத் தெரிந்து கொள்கிறான். அலிபாபாவை சூழ்ச்சி செய்து மரண தண்டனை பெற்றுக் கொடுத்து விடுகிறான்.


மார்ஜியானா அமீரிடம் தானே அலிபாபாவை கொல்லுவதாகக் கூறி அலிபாபாவின் கட்டுகளை கத்தியால் அறுத்து விடுகிறாள். அலிபாபா எதிரிகளுடன் மோதுகிறான். பேராசை காரணமாக அமீர் குகையை நோக்கி விரைகிறான். சூஸக வார்த்தையைச் சொல்லி குகையை திறக்கிறான். ஏராளமான நகைகளை அள்ளி மூட்டையாகக் கட்டிக் கொள்கிறான். குகையை திறக்க செய்யும்போது கொள்ளைக்காரர்கள் வரும் சப்தம் கேட்டு, மூட்டையோடு ஒளிந்து கொள்கிறான்.


நகைகள் கொட்டிக் கிடப்பதை பார்த்த தலைவன் அங்கிருக்கும் அமீரை பிடித்து சிரச் சேதம் செய்து விடுகிறான்.
சிரச் சேதம் செய்த சடலத்தை குகையிலிருந்து எடுத்துச் சென்ற அலிபாபா அவர்கள் வழக்கப்படி அடக்கம் செய்கிறான். குகைக்குத் திரும்பிய கொள்ளைத் தலைவன் அபு ஹுசேன் சடலம் காணாமல் ஆத்திரம் அடைகிறான். அலிபாபாவின் வேலைதான் இது என்பதை அறிந்து கொள்கிறான்.
அலிபாபாவை நயவஞ்சகமாக ஒழிக்கத் திட்டமிடுகிறான். தன்னை பாரசீக எண்ணெய் வியாபாரி என்று அறிமுகம் செய்து கொண்டு, முப்பத்தி ஒன்பது கொள்ளையர்களை பீப்பாயில் மறைவாக பதுங்கி இருக்கச் செய்கிறான் அவை எண்ணெய் பீப்பாய் என்று கூறுகிறான். அதை நம்பிய அலிபாபா அவர்கள் தங்குவதற்கு சம்மதித்து விடுகிறான்.

மார்ஜியானா, எண்ணெய் வியாபாரிக்கு கொடுக்கப்படும் விருந்தில் ஆடிப் பாடுகிறாள். முப்பத்தி ஒன்பது பீப்பாய்களும், மலையிலிருந்து உருட்டி விடப்பட்டு, அத்தனை பேரும் மாண்டு விடுகிறார்கள். உண்மையை புரிந்து கொள்கிறான் அலிபாபா. தனது வாழ்க்கையில் பல துரோகங்களைச் செய்த அபுஹுசனை அடையாளம் கண்டு மார்ஜியானா பழி தீர்த்துக் கொள்கிறாள். அலிபாபா வெற்றி பெறுகிறான்.
"அழகான பொண்ணுதான்' "மாசிலா உண்மைக் காதலே' "உல்லாச உலகம் உனக்கே சொந்தம்' "சலாம் பாபு சலாம் பாபு என்னைப் பாருங்க' போன்ற பாடல்கள் ரசிகர்களால் பெரிதும் வரவேற்கப்பட்டன.

Five years back I received an email from Radha, she being doing a Doctrate in Leo Tolstoy and she asked me about the information and CD regarding Panakari movie.

Because Panakari is the tamil version of Leo Tolstoys Anna Karenina. Unfortunately we did not have any copy of the movie. I gave her about 4 images from Panakari movie to her. Later she thanked me and forwarded some images of her with MGR. She further told that she worked as a translator in Russian Embassy. And she helped MGR in translating Russian when Russian Ministers and Officers (names with held for some reason) visited Madras, then MGR was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.



Madam Radha is of Indian origin and now she is living in the U.S. She searched for MGR movies on the internet and found our Blog and was very happy to see such thriving interest in MGR and his contribution.

She has had the good fortune of having known MGR professionally and has met him a couple of times. On every one of those occasions she was impressed with MGR’s memory to remember people, his attentiveness to everyone who was present, his respect to the artists and his sense of humor.
She is not a MGR Fan but she respect him deeply and consider him as a unique individual who gave a lot to the people he served and entertained.

They offered some sweets with coffee and MadamRadha did not have any, MGR asked her, if she was trying to be careful about what she eats. That is why she is smiling.

Not much known about this film as there is no print to date. MGR appears as a Labourer opposite P.S.Veerappa, MGR always getting beaten up Veerappa. The note worthy is the make up of MGR, his face disfigured after a fire accident. How many of us will accept now to watch this movie.

The last MGR movie, the last movie MGR directed, a historical novel written by Akilan, this is the only historical novel that MGR planned and completed, before he became the Chief Minister in 1977. The other historical novels that are planned by MGR are Ponniyin Selvan and Sivagamiyin Sabatham.

Here is the write up of mine for the movie Ayirathil Oruvan, the movie that I like very much.

Padmini Pictures Ayirathil Oruvan was released in the year 1965. The cast include
Manimaran – MGR
Poongodi – Jayalalitha

Chengappan – Ramadoss
Leader of Selva theevu – M.N.Nambiyar
Queen of Selva theevu – L.Vijayalakshmi

Comrades – Puthur Natarajan, K.B.Ramakrishnan

Naythal Nadu is a country ruled by a King who becomes a Dictator. The story begins with the 1st frame of camera shows herbs, pans to the left to 3 Cobras in separate glass jars and again pans to the left to a fire, behind fire, Manimaran (MGR) lifts his head with uttering in enthusiasm 'Vetri... Vetri' he has successfully tested the poisoned milk with the newly found herb. The poisoned bluish milk turns to white upon the addition of herbal juice prepared by MGR. Azhagu (Nagesh) his assistant to MGR in his works.


A thud on the door and Nagesh opens to sea of people, they rush to meet the Vaithiyar (MGR). They came with a wounded Puthur Natarajan. MGR checks the patient and ask them how he got hurt. The men who came with Puthur Natarajan did not answers. And finally they say they are the mutineers against their King enacted by R.S.Manohar. They propound their theory but MGR did not accept that the freedom from the Dictator's rule should be by peaceful method. And MGR treats Puthur Natarajan. Meanwhile the Soldiers enter the clinic, MGR and Nagesh in a suspicious condition arrested with the mutineers.

Next day MGR was called upon by the King. As MGR is high ranked he was questioned on behalf of the mutineers. Though MGR's answers are in support to the mutineers and against his rule and prove his innocence, R.S.Manohar finds it unacceptable and MGR, Nagesh and mutineers are banned from the Kingdom and ordered to be sold as slaves.

Whenever I am down in my spirits, I start listening to MGR songs and almost instantly I feel rejuvenated and reinvigorated. There is so much energy oozing in most of his songs that they invariably tend to impart some of it to those hearing them, even if it is not the listener's intention.

These songs along with many others from his movies covered a very wide array of feelings or emotions, to name a few, Romance, Courage, Patriotism, Governance, Mother or sibling love, Self-development.

Sometimes I wonder, how he was consistently motivated to take up only do-gooder roles (whenever he did a role of a bad guy, he had a twin role of a good one :) ) and preach only good things in his songs and movies. Though a good part of credit has to go to lyricists and musicians who were involved, one cannot ignore the fact that most of these were specifically written with MGR in mind. I never get tired of listening to his songs.

I guess his willingness to help the people strong enough to transform his on screen persona to the real life without a blip and shine as the unparalleled leader of all time. For once, I regret not having born earlier to have lived in the same era as him and followed him closer during his ascension. I was only a toddler when he died on 24th Dec 1987.

Part Two

The ship sails to Kannitheevu. MGR's ambition to save his country from the evil clutches of R.S.Manohar takes shape in this voyage. The mutineers find MGR their Leader. Before the ship with slaves reaches the destination, the Heroine of the movie Poongodi (Jayalalitha) is introduced (her first movie with MGR) with a song. After the song Jayalalitha's paternal Uncle Chengappan (Ramadoss) who is the ruler of Kannitheevu visit the port. The camera shows the security of the Sea Shore canons on two side with lot of soldiers with rifle on the other. All the slaves are lined up to Ramadoss to show their strength, but it turns comical by Nagesh. And the comical line up ends when Nagesh get his jaws broken. Someone rushes and informs that one of the slaves was bitten by snake and their Leader MGR is giving treatment. Ramadoss and others rushes to the place and see that MGR has saved the patient. The ship captain informs Ramadoss that he is a Leader to the Slaves, which brings panic for Ramadoss and orders MGR to be thrown to the Sea. But Jayalalitha interferes and gets permission to use the skills of a Doctor for the snake ridden Island.

(This is a very different scenario in all MGR movies, he is the real life saver but in Ayirathil Oruvan, Jayalalitha is the life saver, even though this is her first movie with MGR, picturising that she is shrewd like MGR).

The deal finishes and the slaves are purchased for one gold coin. The work of the slaves is mainly cutting, pruning the rough terrain. As this hard work is new to them, Puthur Natarjan express his unwillingness to his comrades, then Ramadoss lashes them with words. Thought provoking song “Yen Endra Kelvi” follows.

Part III

Jayalalitha character fells in love with MGR and follows him to the place were MGR cuts the wood. (I have to mention that cutting the tree by MGR – the full tree is set up, the cutting part is real wood, the axe used by MGR is very sharp and MGR acts as a real wood cutter even the chips from the cut flies out and seen in the shot) Out of MGR's vision the tree falls on her, but in the nick of time MGR dashes in and saves Jayalalitha, she let out a cry and all MGR's men comes out and with difficulty takes the tree from MGR's back. This incident makes to love him even more. She joins to give treatment to MGR. But MGR's men dislike it and they feel that she is trying to take MGR from them. But MGR is a different Leader. When Jayalalitha gives permission to him to enter all the places in the Island and ready to give him good place to dwell, then MGR say, if my friends are also allowed to do the same I too will enjoy. And continues what a Leader should be (typical MGR one liner) – they believe me as their Head and I consider them as my Body, what is the use when the Head is separated from the Body and what is the use without life. Unwillingly Jayalalitha leaves him.

The next shot establishes MGR's plan to escape from Kannitheevu. MGR tells his comrades to cut and roll the trees to the river, when asked by others tell them that it is easier to drag the trunk in water. The scene changes to Poongodi (Jayalalitha) as she plans an invasion to capture MGR's heart. She and her maid visit the hut of MGR. Nagesh inquires before seeing MGR, Jayalalitha enacts as her eyes are burning and she needs a Doctor. MGR comes out of the hut and examines her eyes and understands that Jayalalitha is playing with him, MGR orders Nagesh to clean her eyes with water and goes inside. She cannot take this foiled plan.

Now she plots another invasion by acting as she is very ill. Ramadoss orders MGR to take care and completely treat her illness. MGR holds Jayalalitha's hand to know the pulse. (MGR keeps three fingers, when I was a boy I thought that MGR doing a style, as Doctors keep only one finger to know the pulse rate. When I had a opportunity to talk with a Siddha Doctor, he told me about the nadi. Placing three fingers in Siddha medicine is to find the pulse type and not pulse rate as I once thought. There are three types of nadi – kapam, pitham and vatham. Three fingers are placed evenly over the pulsating region to feel the pulse, when the first finger feels the pulse then it is Pitha nadi, when the pulse is felt in two fingers it is kapa nadi and when it is felt in all the three fingers it is termed as Vatha nadi then the doctor will find out that the body is having some problem when they observe the pulse in three fingers, and accordingly they will give treatment. This is a minute detail, MGR has observed and used it in Ayirathil Oruvan. The shot can be focused on MGR and Jayalalitha alone but importance was given in the fingers, MGR keeps his fingers then again with doubt places two fingers and then the third finger and conclude that nothing wrong with her, who said MGR is not a Good Actor)

When the maids leave the princess room, and then slowly Poongodi (Jayalalitha) tell her love and affection to MGR. There is no camera movement, a tight close up shot of both in one frame MGR on the floor and she on the bed with dominating gesture (keep note no eye movement of MGR, he is staring and the movement is by Jayalalitha) she is trying to dominate and at the same time convince him with her words. The next shot MGR gets up and says to marry someone equal to her rank and not a slave. MGR character loves the princess but he did not want to express his feeling, another body language scene continues, that can be noticed in MGR's acting, he tries to hide both hands when talking to Jayalalitha about her Love.

The song “Odum Megangala” continues, MGR reaches the seashore with her, their conversation abruptly stops when they hear horns from the pirate ship nearing the unguarded Sea shore. MGR takes Jayalalitha to the castle and he joins his men. As most of the Soldiers have gone to other side of the Island there was little force left to guard the sea shore as well as the castle. Ramadoss with a plan meets MGR and asks his help. MGR was unmoved, then Ramadoss put forward his plan and assures them if they win the battle they will be set free from slavery and they will treated as the soldiers of Kannitheevu. Brimming with confidence MGR request his men to join him, but some of them question him what is the use if we die in the war. MGR say that there is no rule only the enemies has to die in the battle, Gundumani then mention after the war MGR is the real benefactor he will be praised by Poongodi. MGR utters the words with pain, Don't blemish my ambition. Nagesh speaks on behalf of MGR and they willing join to fight against the pirates and save Kannitheevu.(I have to say a good continuity, MGR entering the princess room to give treatment and MGR men entering the pirate ship lasts to nearly 20 minutes, the first scene is evening, lights are seen, then the sea shore continued with pirate ship sighting evening again, fight with pirates night and prison scene night and the escape and reaching the ship in dawn. Only one mistake is the conversation scene between MGR, Ramadoss and his men that was in day time)

Part IV

Nambiyar the pirate leader is introduced with his typical villainy smile. In the battle some of MGR's men die and they force the pirates to run from the Island. Victorious MGR meets Ramadoss but he cunningly outwits MGR and orders his men to arrest MGR and his men.

MGR makes a plan to escape from the prison and enter the pirate ship, the plan gets successful. Leadership abilities of MGR is seen in this scenario also, he helps all his men to get out of the prison and then finally he gets out. They all reach the seashore, MGR suggests to swim and reach the ship without the knowledge of Ramadoss and as well as the pirates.

After reaching the ship they attack Nambiyar's crew and capture the pirate ship. When one of MGR's men try to kill Nambiyar, MGR interferes and saves him. He request pardon for his men's action, further continues and ask Nambiyar's help to sail them to Naythal Nadu. Nambiyar assures that he will help MGR for he has saved his life.

Canon was fired as a warning to anchor the ship. And Ramadoss orders to send one man MGR to the shore. MGR's men and Nambiyar too did not wish to send MGR to the shore, but MGR speaks about Leader's sacrificial nature.

Nagesh : Without you we will not succeed.

Puthur Natarajan : We all wish to die with you.

MGR: If you think I am your Leader, then you all have to fulfill my desires.

Everyone: We will do it

MGR: I am going to the shore and nobody should stop me.

Everyone: No

MGR: My wish is to save all your lives. Why all has to suffer for me. What is wrong for me to take all your sufferings. You all know my ambition, be cheerful, I will come back.

(A lamp is seen above MGR and Nagesh during the above dialogue and a Candle in another shot were MGR is getting down from the ship, a kind of montage, candle is for sacrifice, Light is for giving enlightenment to his men)

MGR reaches the shore and Ramadoss shows his pistol and MGR ask his permission to allow his men to sail safely, but Ramadoss has another plan when he gets hold of MGR he wish to kill all the men in the ship with his canon. Unfortunately for Ramadoss, MGR acts quickly and gets the pistol from him and orders his soldiers to stay away from the canons. MGR takes Ramadoss as a hostage (in a long shot birds are flying a natural montage, as MGR is getting free, Director Sankar once said that when filming MGR movie miracles happened in Adimai Penn, this is one example for Ayirathil Oruvan) and reaches the pirate ship with everyone's excitement. When the ship starts to sail and reaches out of firing range, MGR gives a boat and ask him to leave. Ramadoss while reaching the shore lets out a war cry as usual by MGR villains “Unna kavanithukolgiran” (I will make you pay for this)

Part V

MGR and his men set sail with merriment, but the next shot was Poongodi (Jayalalitha) with tears in her eyes, saying my life is going there, pointing to the pirate ship. (A second my enthusiasm drained) this feeling in shown in the next shot with MGR and Nagesh. And he tells how strong the thoughts become when let loose and how it becomes our servant when trained.

“Unnai nan santhithen” follows, in between the song Nambiyar mentions that they are running out of water and provision and to obtain he has to anchor his ship in Selvatheevu. The song continues, the end of lyrics is the opening of new struggle to MGR leadership.

Long shot showing the boats from the pirate ship reaching the shores of Selvatheevu. The pirate Leader Nambiyar was welcomed by the Queen enacted by L.Vijayalakshmi, she bows on seeing Nambiyar this gives a suspicion to MGR. Nambiyar introduces MGR to the Queen as they need her help. With swift motion MGR and his men are arrested, Nambiyar removes the cloud of suspicion that he is also the Leader of Selvatheevu.

The next shot MGR called upon by Nambiyar and ask him to join his side to become a pirate, as most of his men are killed in the battle. MGR turns down the offer and the pirate leaders rage boils and says that I will kill you with your men. Without hesitation MGR pleads not to ill-treat his men. Nambiyar understands that MGR's weekness is that he loves his men and he cannot stand against their suffering he can easily make MGR surrender to his wish. Then Nambiyar utters now itself I know the end of the story, he turns to his assistant and orders to execute all MGR's men in front of him.


MGR rushes to Nambiyar to stop his action and pleads to take his life and leave them as they are his Dear. Nambiyar nearing victory if you really love your men then why you hesitate, kill them. MGR tries to stop the crushing floor and knowing it is not possible with out having second thought MGR say (Nan sammathikiran, Kollaikaranaga nan sammathikiran) I accept, I accept to become a pirate. (Note that the words instead of saying Kollaikaranaga nan sammathikiran, he says first Nan sammathikiran. That crucial word that will stop Nambiyar's action. A classical example from Ramayanam, that when Hanuman was sent by Lord Rama to know the whereabouts of Seetha, after Hanuman returns he says 'Kandean Seethai' and then only were she is. Hanuman knows that what Lord Rama needs at present. Same handling of dialogue by R.K.Shanmugam.) MGR kneels and takes the oath to become the pirate and abide to the law of the Island.

The concept of convincing a rival to surrender to his wish is followed in almost all language movies and Hollywood is not different, even a movie having Super Hero character. MGR character in Ayirathil Oruvan 'Manimaran' basically a Doctor circumstances makes him to take up the Leadership and to fight against his Ruler. Manimaran character is flesh and blood like us.

In Warner Brothers movie “Superman” the leading character 'Kal -El' a.k.a. Superman (Earth name) is a super hero, an alien who came to planet Earth when his home planet Krypton exploded. He was raised by Jonathan and Martha Kent. He comes to know about his Powers and the reason why he was sent to Earth becomes Superman and fights for Truth, Justice in American way. In the second part of the movie Superman II, his father's (Jor-El) rivals General Zod, Ursa and Non reaches Earth and came to know about Jor-Els son Superman and tries to take revenge. First meeting with Superman General Zod orders to kneel before him and accept him as his superior he turns down the offer General Zod havocs destruction and innocent people suffer, to stop this in the climax Superman kneels down and takes General Zod hand. The time line of both movies are nearly 15 odd years apart both movies have same kind of characterization.

Coming back to Ayirathil Oruvan MGR his fewer men and lots of Nambiyar's pirates goes to sea. When they saw a passenger ship a pirate tries to blow the horn, but MGR stops and says what is the use of stealing from a passenger ship when we try and nail a pirate ship we get lot of gold.


When MGR gives a plan to attack only pirate ships Nagesh comes to the frame and says why he has changed then MGR says he is only acting so they cannot harm passenger ships.
The scene continues with MGR taking up a pirate ship and amassing the wealth. When the pirate ship reaches the shores of Selva Theevu he was welcomed by Nambiyar.

Part of the loot was given as a share to MGR and his men. MGR orders his men to melt the jeweleries into Gold and send it to the people of Neidhal Nadu.

Part VI

To change her mood, Jayalalitha plans to take a voyage, though Ramadass tells the peril and risk involved in sea and also MGR has turned as a pirate. But she takes up the journey.

The next hunt begins for MGR incidentally he sights a pirate flagged ship thinking that it is a pirate ship, MGR orders to attack and take over. After getting inside the pirate ship one of Nambiyar's men enter into the princess room to gets his hand on the jewels of Jayalalitha, and MGR dashes into and orders to free her and also get out of the deck. [MGR is seen with a peculiar sword trade mark of Ayirathil Oruvan with that sword one can easily say it is from Ayirathil Oruvan]. MGR tries to say why he turned as a pirate. But she did not accepts and MGR with help of Nagesh tries to safe guard her from the sight of Nambiyar. But the plan gets foiled and Nambiyar was taken away by the beauty, and order to bring her to auction. (Check out typical belt on MGR's hip)

Nambiyar makes up a plan to buy her in the auction for 1 lakh, but his wife L.Vijayalakshmi has another to buy her 1.5 lakhs. Song goes on explaining her pathetic condition. The song ends and the auction begins. She was finally bought by MGR for 2 lakhs gold. [Remember MGR was sold for 1 gold and he is buying her the Princess of Kannitheevu for 2 lakhs gold.]
Even though MGR interfered in the auction and saved her from Nambiyar but Jayalalitha did not understand and she is not able to digest the change of gentleman MGR to a pirate.
Nambiyar did not stop with that failure, before he reaches MGR's hut, L.Vijayalakshmi tries to convince Jayalalitha to marry MGR but she hesitates then Nambiyar enters.
Then sword fight with both hands continues. I have to mention that it is safer to fight with two equal sized swords with two hands but it is riskier to fight with a knife and a sword with both hands. Before the fight ends, Jayalalitha on the request of L.Vijayalakshmi, stops the fight and says that according to the law of the Island that the Leader should bless the couple. Nambiyar's with disgust and hatred blesses them. Is it a bless of a Leader, good acting by Nambiyar.

MGR plans to send Poongodi (Jayalalitha) with Nagesh to Kannitheevu. With that plan running in his mind he enters his hut outside it was cloudy and her mind also, unwelcome by Poongodi (Jayalalitha). MGR washes his hand and understands there is no dinner and not even a glass of water left for him. With a typical MGR smile he goes out to sleep.
Watch the frame background of Jayalalitha is swords and knife in her hand. The next day she takes a stroll over the seashore and over hears the talk between Nagesh and Gundumani. Nagesh gives a plan to take Poongodi (Jayalalitha) to Kannitheevu. Gundumani as usual denies and why he has to take Poongodi because Ramadoss is anxious to take revenge on them. And he continues when a girl comes in the life everything changes our Leader is no exception.

Nagesh counter acts and narrates why Gundumani became unfaithful and how he had forgotten the deed of the Leader, and how MGR has sacrificed his character to safeguard us from the death sentence issued by Nambiyar. Attitude changes not only for Gundumani but also for Poongodi (Jayalalitha).

On that night MGR returns after practice, Jayalalitha welcomes him, ask him to have dinner or atleast to take paisam. MGR says No, that he had already finished the dinner with his friends. When he tries to go out and sleep she acts as a normal Tamil movie heroine and makes him to stay.
When this scene goes on the background is worth mentioning, swords on the side of Jayalalitha and Harp on the side of MGR. Can we say that she is expecting favoruable action (Music) from his side but she received only unfavourable result (Swords) the deed she has done earlier. And also MGR points out that her behaviour is different and he feels as he is walking over a sword.
After this scene MGR scratches his cheek and comes to a decision with closing his eyes with his hand (a good body language) the decision to personally take her to Kannitheevu. This is the only romantic scene of the whole movie. This scene lasts for not more than 10 minutes. (Watch simple Bamboo cot for MGR and expensive one for Jayalalitha)
After a long time R.S.Manohar the Dictator of Neithal Nadu comes into the scene. To lift his spirit he was adviced to participate in the festival for that the Dictator plans to travel to his neigbouring country.
The news reaches MGR and comes out with a plan to take over the navy in the middle of the sea. Poongodi (Jayalalitha) enters the hut and MGR calls her to get ready that he will personally take her to her home. Poongodi (Jayalalitha) denies and tells that she is willing to be wife. MGR as usual says that her life will wither out like a flower if she marries him. (As MGR character is doctor who researches with plants and herbs he relates life with flowers) She has taken the decision to stay with him and help in his duty.
But MGR was unwilling to risk her life and stays with his option. No way to convince him, she finally tells him that she has consumed poison and that she wants her last wish to be fulfilled. Her last wish? To marry him.

Take note that MGR calls her as Princess from the beginning but when she was on verge of death then he says Poongodi, the true love comes out. MGR performs the wed lock and comes to know that Poongodi has dramatized.

Only one duet song of the movie follows. The set used in the final stanza of the duet song is worth mentioning the set is a garden with a pond and moon lit when the camera moves the upper part of the set reflects in the pond, there was no cat walks a well planned camera angle basically the camera with that position, the cat walk should be seen but the pond reflects the background and the full moon.
As a last resort Nambiyar plans to ambush MGR in mid sea. He request MGR to take his turn. MGR utilize this opportunity as an unexpected gift from the Leader. He then assist Poongodi to get inside the large wooden case.

MGR, Nagesh and some of his men with the case makes to the shore. Unexpectedly Nambiyar intercepts and gives some cool comments on his new sword with a quick reflex he stabs the wooden box when he tries to do again MGR opens and lifts Poongodi out of the Box.
Nambiyar tells that MGR has disobeyed the law of the Island to that MGR retorts next to you. To finish the matter once and for all they come up with a duel the result whoever lasts will be the Leader.
With MGR's smiling face and cool moves over the dangerous cliffs the fight ends with MGR as victorious. Then Nambiyar turns into a new leaf and request him to become the Leader of Selvatheevu as per the rule of the Island. MGR denies the offer and ask him to continue as the Leader of the Island that he only need the freedom of his homeland.
Nambiyar extends his helping hand and he assures that his people will be on his side and will fight against the Dictator of Neithal Nadu.

Part VII

“Atho Antha Paravai Pola” philosophical song follows. The song emphasize on goodness of Freedom. Some of the main points in the song are:
Did the air gets away from us that we are slaves?
Did the sea water differs hot when we touch?

Did we (slaves) born motherless?
Did we speak without language?

Why we need Freedom.
Millions should live united so we need freedom
The country should turn into shrine so we need freedom
We have to sing and dance without fear, so we need freedom

A lot has to be said about the song, but I will write it in separate post on songs of MGR movies. A look into that song: Number of people in the ship, the ship used in this shot is caravel but not fully caravel. It is a modified version. Which can hold nearly 20 to 30 crews. The camera has to be placed in a awkward positions to get the song picturised. The camera was in the ship most of the time and only once the camera was mounted on another ship to show the entire crew singing while MGR clapping his hands. They used trolley shot when required.

The sun was right on top, in one line of the song, MGR hanging from a rope slowly slides and keeps the hand on the deck and then lifts his head to the camera. What is the difficultly here? The difficultly is when he faces the camera the sun rays directly hits him in his eyes but there was no blinking before raising his head MGR carefully keeps his eyes half opened and then he lifts there was no problem from direct sun light. (Most of the yesteryear actors had the capacity they were trained in such a way, you can see this in many MGR and Sivaji starer films)

After the song the humming continues. Poongodi (Jayalalitha) raises doubts about the victory condition. Take into mind they are fighting against the well trained navy of the King. MGR coolly says victory is always in the side of Truth. He further says that his people are aware of the fact that most of them will not survive to see their family, but look they are happy. And the truth is those who are involved in social life takes the death as sleep. Why that sleep will not come to me? (When he say this dialogue he lifts his shoulders, taking the inevitable happily like his men)

The next day the pirate ship founds the Dictator's ship approaching, Nambiyar comes to MGR's cabin and he says that he will take command. The next scene was the sails coming down, anchor lowers and the crew act like dead bodies. (Note that MGR in his movies this kind of action cannot be seen, this is one of cowardly act or an act of villain, MGR always faces the enemy in front and never want to take them unnoticed). When the Dictator's ships touches the pirate ship a very beautiful editing, close up of MGR and Jayalalitha, MGR handing over the knife to her to take care and as the danger has touched them (ship). In all the movies especially the colour movies of MGR, he attires Red costume in the climax. But in this movie MGR is cladded in White but Red hue in border and head band. The way in which he wants freedom is by sword but the cause is nobler (white).

The pirate ship was bounded to the Dictator's ship and he commands his men to enter. When the Dictator comes into the pirate ship the real war begins. All the crew acting as dead raises up and faces the dictator's army. MGR starting the war with a few words and continues to fight slowly. Unusual fight for MGR his movement and reflex are quick but in this sequence it was slow rather say it is very slow. The reasons because?

The fight was continued by Nambiyar. Both goes inside the ship and the fight continues and finally Nambiyar fells unconscious and MGR continues this time the sword fight is very fast and as usual by MGR. Now the Dictator finds difficult in holding the fast and furious MGR and finally he faces the defeat but MGR (remember white costume) tells him that he wants not his life but only his attitude towards the people. Nambiyar returning to conscious throws the poisoned dagger from the back side of the Dictator. MGR rushes and holds the Dictator and gives him treatment. Even though the dagger is poisoned he was cured by MGR (well trained in detoxification) The pirates were crushed by the navy and the Dictator gets up and orders to arrest MGR without mercy.
In the court Dictator (R.S.Manohar) takes his knees and ask him to take the throne and rule as per his wish he wanted it to say in the ship itself but he knows that MGR will not accept it. MGR turning victorious assures that R.S.Manohar is completely changed (Manohar's hand on MGR's chest) so he can give a good rule to the people and request to use the talent of Nambiyar and make him as the Commander of Neithal Nadu.

MGR and Jayalalitha bids farewell and he returns his research and service to their people a song in background claiming him that he is Ayirathil Oruvan.

இந்த திரி இனிதே இன்று 15-1-2013 மாலை நிறைவு பெறுகிறது .
