12th January of 1967 in Madras was excitingly busy. The Madras Corporation was preparing to host a grand reception for noted singer M.S. Subbulakshmi who had just delivered a concert at the United Nations.

Political parties were stepping up campaigning for the impending elections, and cricket enthusiasts were seeking out tickets to watch the third test between West Indies and India.

For fans of MGR, however, the release of his new film Thaiukku Thalaimagan was the most important event in the month. On January 12, they were getting ready to put up festoons and celebrate the release the following day. But things took a different turn that day.

To their shock, agony and anger, MGR was shot by fellow actor M.R. Radha at the former’s residence in Nandambakkam, St. Thomas Mount, around 5 p.m.

Many rushed to Government Royappetah hospital where he was taken for emergency treatment. Chanting ‘long live MGR,’ they pelted stones and went on a rampage that lasted till about 9 p.m. News spread that Radha, who shot MGR, had tried to commit suicide by shooting himself and was admitted to the same hospital for treatment.

A group of MGR fans descended on Radha’s house in St. Thomas Mount and vandalized the property. A prohibitory order was promulgated.

Both the actors had to be shifted to Government General Hospital for surgery. The bullet that entered near MGR’s left ear had ‘lodged itself behind the first vertebra’. In the case of Radha, one bullet fired at the right temple ‘had caused an injury and fractured the skull. Another fired in the neck got embedded at the rear part of the neck’.

But it was impossible for any vehicle to plough through the crowd outside Royapettah GH. The police had to forcefully clear the way and by 10.15 p.m., both the actors were moved to the GH in the same ambulance.

Doctors removed the bullets from Radha’s body but in the case of MGR, they feared dislodging the bullet would cause further damage to the first cervical vertebra. They decided not to touch the bullet. Both actors gained consciousness by 11 a.m. the following day.

Anxious fans were on the edge through the night. Anxious well-wishers and fans welcomed news of the actors’ well-being the next day.

The shooting case was not as simple as it seemed. The investigation and lengthy trail that followed unfolded a complicated story.

K.K. Vasu, who was with Radha in MGR’s house when the shooting took place, was the key witness. He was a film producer, and in 1966, had borrowed money from Radha to produce a movie titled Petralthan Pillaya with MGR in the lead.

The movie did well and Vasu repaid the loan with interest. In January 1967, Radha approached Vasu to produce another film with MGR in the lead again. On the morning of January 12, both met to discuss the project.

By 4.30 that evening, both reached MGR’s house in Nandambakkam. They were seated in the reception hall. Radha placed the leather bag he was carrying on the table and waited for MGR to show.

The story is clear up to this point and all the parties broadly agreed with the narration. But the accounts began to vary here on.

As Vasu and MGR recalled in court, when they were discussing the details of the proposed movie, Radha stood up. MGR asked Radha to be seated, but he did not heed the words. MGR and Vasu continued talking when all of a sudden, they heard a loud noise.

MGR felt a shooting pain and covered his left ear with his palm to feel blood ooze out. He looked up and saw Radha standing with a revolver in his hand. Radha stepped back, shot himself in the right temple, and then in the neck. MGR managed to walk to the portico and asked his driver to take him to the hospital.

Radha, however, had a different story. According to him, when MGR met them in the reception hall, the matinee idol scolded Radha for writing negative articles about him.

“Brother, you are writing articles saying that I am conspiring to kill Mr. Kamaraj (then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu). Thereafter you are threatening to shoot. It does not prevent me from talking on the same lines,” MGR allegedly said.

But Radha denied it. Even as they were engaged in a heated argument, Radha heard a loud noise and felt giddy. He realized he had been shot in the temple and saw MGR pointing a gun at him.

Radha claimed that, as a reflex, he rushed towards MGR, snatched the gun and fired a shot in return. Radha was in the hospital until January 30. After that he was in the A-class prison of Madras Central jail.

The election campaign was in full swing by then and the iconic picture of MGR sitting on a hospital bed with a heavily bandaged neck was widely circulated.

Election results were announced on February 23 and DMK trounced Congress to form a new government. MGR defeated his Congress rival by an impressive margin.

On February 27, the police filed a chargesheet accusing Radha of a murder attempt on MGR, and a suicide bid. The police also said Radha owned the revolver used in the shooting. Its licence had expired in 1964. The trial was to follow.

On January 12, 1967, M.G. Ramachandran and co-actor M.R. Radha had been rushed to hospital with bullet injuries.

On February 27, the police filed a chargesheet accusing Radha of a murder attempt on MGR, and a suicide bid. The trial was to follow.

M.R. Radha was apprehensive that the newly-elected DMK government would exert influence and deny him fair trial. He approached the Supreme Court to transfer the case to a court outside Madras State.

However, following the assurances of Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai and education minister Nedunchezhian, Radha withdrew his court transfer plea.

Meanwhile, on March 23, MGR complained of pain in his throat and was admitted to the GH. X-rays revealed the bullet lodged in his vertebra had moved from its original position. Doctors quickly operated upon him and removed the bullet, but MGR’s voice was impaired.

The trial commenced in the Sessions Court, Madras, on August 1. The prosecution wanted to prove that Radha, motivated by political animosity, professional jealousy and personal prejudice, visited MGR with the intention to murder him.

On the other hand, Radha’s defence counsel tried to establish that the prosecution had ‘failed to prove the charges and what happened was in the nature of an accident in the course of a struggle.’ This was not easy, but the triad of S. Mohan Kumaramangalam, N.T. Vanamamalai and N. Natarajan that argued for Radha put forward some sharp questions.

The prosecution led by P.R. Gokulakrishnan, summoned many witnesses to establish that Radha was under severe financial difficulty. Next, they tried to link his financial difficulties with his political views. Radha, who supported Dravida Kazhagam (DK), was portrayed as a person with extreme views against MGR, a prominent member of DMK. R. Subramaniam, a Tamil junior reporter with the Police Shorthand Bureau, recalled from his notes that Radha, in his speech at the DK conference held on January 8, urged party members to ‘take direct action’ and said it was ‘not enough to be in possession of knives.’

The four-page document titled Ennudaiya mudivu (‘my end’ or ‘my decision’), purportedly given by Radha to the Saidapet police on January 12, was an important piece of evidence. In that, he allegedly explained his intentions ‘to destroy a few of those who were abetting Aryam’ and that he ‘was ready to head this move.’

Radha was ‘in a desperate mood and wanted to show himself as a martyr by putting an end to his life’ and ‘escape his creditors,’ was the conclusion.

Defence counsel argued that many who had deposed against Radha were tutored, and denied that Radha wrote Ennudaiya mudivu . It was strange that the police had handed MGR’s blood-stained clothes to his family without examining them, they said.

If the police had examined the clothes, they would have detected Radha’s blood splattered on them, the defence said. In short, they argued that the essence of ‘the matter was who shot whom.’

Dr. K.C.B. Gopalakrishnan, professor of forensic medicine at Madras Medical College, examined the two bullets extracted from Radha’s body and the one extracted from MGR’s. His study confirmed the three bullets had come from the same gun. The question to the police was from which gun were the bullets fired.

A.V. Subramanian, the firearms expert who was an important witness, deposed that MGR and Radha owned guns that were designed to fire identical cartridges. What was important were the markings on the cartridges, he said. After studying the cartridges, Subramanian identified that the bullets were fired from Radha’s gun.

Defence counsel tried to deflate this point by highlighting that Subramanian did not use micro-photographs. The fact remains that Radha took a loaded weapon to MGR’s house and never explained why he did so, the prosecution countered. MGR’s gun, collected from his house by the police, was unloaded, they said.

On October 22, the court, after hearing both sides, said it would deliver the judgment on November 4 ( The Hindu which had been reporting the trial continuously was shut between October 25 and November 24 because of a bonus dispute. It missed out on the November 4 judgement, but recalled its summary later when it resumed functioning.)

The Sessions Court found Radha guilty for attempted murder and for violating the Arms Act. The licence of Radha’s revolver had expired on January 26, 1964.

Radha was sentenced to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment. He quickly filed an appeal in the High Court. After a long wait, on April 24, 1968, the Court rejected Radha’s appeal and confirmed his sentence. Radha rushed to the Supreme Court. Though the Court rejected the appeal, it reduced his sentence on humanitarian grounds. Radha was 57 years old and had a large family to take care of, the Court reasoned on May 2, 1969, and reduced his sentence to five years.

On April 29, 1971, the DMK government released M.R. Radha one month ahead of the scheduled date. In all, Radha served four years and three months in jail.

எம்.ஜி. ஆரும், எம்.ஆர்.ராதாவும் நடித்திருந்த 'பெற்றால்தான் பிள்ளையா' படம் வெளிவந்து வெற்றிகரமாக ஓடிக்கொண்டிருந்தது. எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் தோட்டம், ராமாவரத்தில் உள்ளது. சென்னை பரங்கி மலையில் இருந்து 1 மைல் தூரத்தில் இந்த தோட்டம் உள்ளது.

1967 ஜனவரி 12-ந்தேதி மாலை 5 மணிக்கு எம்.ஜி. ஆரின் ராமாவரம் தோட்டத்துக்கு, எம்.ஆர். ராதா போனார். அவருடன், 'பெற்றால்தான் பிள்ளையா' படத்தை தயாரித்த முத்துக் குமரன் பிக்சர்ஸ் அதிபர் வாசுவும் சென்றார். 'பெற்றால்தான் பிள்ளையா' படத்தை தயாரிப்பதற்கு, எம். ஆர்.ராதா ரூ.1 லட்சம் பண உதவி செய்திருந்ததாகக் கூறப்பட்டது.

படம் வெளியான பிறகு, அந்தப் பணத்தை வாங்கித் தருவதாக, எம்.ஜி.ஆர். உறுதி கூறியிருந்தார் என்றும், அதன் படி பணம் வராததால், வாசுவையும் அழைத்துக்கொண்டு, எம்.ஜி.ஆர். வீட்டுக்கு ராதா சென்றதாகவும் சொல்லப்பட்டது.

எம்.ஜி.ஆரை ராதாவும், வாசுவும் சந்தித்தார்கள். முன்பு ஒப்புக் கொண்டது போல், தனக்கு ஒரு லட்சத்தை தரவேண்டும் என்று எம்.ஆர். ராதா கேட்டதாகவும், அதைத் தொடர்ந்து எம்.ஜி.ஆருக்கும், எம்.ஆர்.ராதாவுக்கும் தகராறு ஏற்பட்டதாகவும் கூறப்படுகிறது.

உன்னால் எனக்கு நிறைய நஷ்டம். பல படங்களில் இருந்து என்னை நீக்கிவிட்டார்கள் என்று ராதா ஆத்திரத்தோடு கூறினார். இதனால் தகராறு முற்றியது. எம்.ஆர்.ராதா கோபத்தோடு வெளியே செல்வதுபோல எழுந்தார். பிறகு, 'சட்'டென்று மடியில் வைத்திருந்த கைத் துப்பாக்கியை எடுத்து, எம்.ஜி.ஆரை நோக்கி சுட்டார்.

உடனே ராதா, துப்பாக்கியை தன் தலையில் வைத்து விசையை அழுத்தினார். குண்டு அவர் நெற்றியில் பாய்ந்தது. இதற்குள் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். வீட்டு ஆட்கள் ஓடிவந்து ராதாவை பிடித்துக்கொண்டனர். துப்பாக்கியைப் பிடுங்கிக் கொண்டார்கள்.

எம்.ஜி.ஆரை ஒரு காரில் ஏற்றி ராயப்பேட்டை ஆஸ்பத்திரிக்கு கொண்டு போனார்கள். எம்.ஆர்.ராதா, இன்னொரு காரில் ராயப்பேட்டை ஆஸ்பத்திரிக்கு கொண்டு போகப்பட்டார். ராயப்பேட்டை ஆஸ்பத்திரியில், அவர்களுக்கு அவசர சிகிச்சை அளிக்கப்பட்டது.

எம்.ஆர்.ராதாவின் தலையில் குண்டு இருந்தது. மேற்கொண்டு சிகிச்சை அளிப்பதற்காக, அவர்கள் இருவரும் பெரிய (ஜெனரல்) ஆஸ்பத்திரிக்கு கொண்டு போகப்பட்டனர். இருவருக்கும் தலையில் பெரிய கட்டு போடப்பட்டிருந்தது.

எம்.ஜி.ஆருக்கு இரவு 10.45 மணி முதல் நள்ளிரவு 2.45 வரை ஆபரேஷன் நடந்தது. காது அருகே பாய்ந்து இருந்த சிறிய இரும்புத்துண்டை (குண்டின் ஒரு பகுதி) வெளியே எடுக்கமுடியவில்லை. அதை எடுக்க, ஆபரேஷன் செய்யச் செய்ய ரத்தப்பெருக்கு ஏற்பட்டது. எனவே, அதை உள்ளேயே வைத்து தையல் போட்டுவிட்டார்கள்.

இதனால் ஆபத்து இல்லை என்று டாக்டர்கள் தெரிவித்தனர். எம்.ஜி.ஆர். உணர்வு இல்லாமல் இருந்தார். குண்டு பாய்ந்த இடத்தை டாக்டர்கள் பலமுறை 'எக்ஸ்ரே' எடுத்தனர். காயம்பட்ட இடத்தில் இருந்து நிறைய ரத்தம் வெளியேறியதால் ஆஸ்பத்திரியில் அவருக்கு ரத்தம் செலுத்தப்பட்டது.

எம்.ஆர்.ராதாவுக்கு இரவு 11 மணி வரை ஆபரேஷன் நடந்தது. அவர் தலையில் இருந்து ஒரு குண்டும், கழுத்தில் இருந்து ஒரு குண்டும் அகற்றப்பட்டன. நடிகர் எம். ஆர்.ராதா கைது செய்யப்பட்டு இருப்பதாக, தமிழ்நாடு தலைமை போலீஸ் அதிகாரி (ஐ.ஜி.) அருள் அறிவித்தார். எம்.ஜி.ஆரை கொல்ல முயன்றதாகவும், தற்கொலை செய்து கொள்ள முயன்றதாகவும் ராதா மீது வழக்குப்பதிவு செய்யப்பட்டது.

தி.மு.கழகத் தலைவர் அண்ணா, மு.கருணாநிதி, என்.வி.நடராசன் ஆகியோர் ஆஸ்பத்திரிக்குச் சென்று எம்.ஜி.ஆரை பார்த்தனர். படுகாயத்துடன் படுக்கையில் படுத்திருந்த எம்.ஜி.ஆரைப் பார்த்து, அண்ணாவும், மற்ற இரு தலைவர்களும் கண் கலங்கினர். பிறகு அண்ணாவும், மற்றவர்களும் ராமாவரம் தோட்டத்துக்குச் சென்று, அங்கு நடந்ததை விசாரித்தனர்.

ஆஸ்பத்திரியில் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். சிகிச்சை பெற்று வரும்போதே, தமிழக சட்டசபை தேர்தல் நடந்தது. எம்.ஜி.ஆர். கழுத்தில் பெரிய கட்டுடன் இருக்கும் படங்கள், தி.மு.க. பிரசார சுவரொட்டிகளாக ஒட்டப்பட்டன. தேர்தல் பிரசாரத்துக்கு போகாமல், ஆஸ்பத்திரியில் இருந்தபடி பரங்கிமலை தொகுதியில் வெற்றி பெற்றார். எம்.ஜி.ஆர். தி.மு.கழகம் ஆட்சியைக் கைப்பற்றியது. அண்ணா முதலமைச்சர் ஆனார்.

எம்.ஜி.ஆரும், எம்.ஆர்.ராதாவும் குணம் அடைந்தார்கள். எம்.ஜி.ஆர். மார்ச் 10-ந்தேதி வீடு திரும்பினார். எம்.ஜி.ஆரை சுட்டுக்கொல்ல முயன்றதாகவும், தன்னைத் தானே சுட்டுக்கொண்டு தற்கொலை செய்து கொள்ள முயன்றதாகவும், எம்.ஆர்.ராதா மீது வழக்கு தொடரப்பட்டது. சைதாப்பேட்டை சப் மாஜிஸ்திரேட்டு கோர்ட்டில் குற்றப்பத்திரிகை தாக்கல் செய்யப்பட்டது

ஆயிரத்தில் அல்ல கோடிகளில் ஒருவர்.

ஒரு இலங்கைத்தமிழனது பார்வையில் எம்.ஜி.ராமச்சந்திரன் என்பவர், தலைவனுக்குத்தலைவன், இதய தெய்வம் என்ற நிலையில் என்றும் மிகப்பெரிய கௌரவத்துடனும், நன்றியுடனும் பார்க்கப்படும் ஒருவர்.
எந்தவொரு கலைஞனுக்கும் அடிமைப்பட்டுவிடாத இலங்கைத்தமிழன், எம்.ஜி.ஆர் என்ற நாமத்திற்கு மட்டும் கொண்டாட்டம் எடுத்தகாலங்கள் ஆச்சரியமானது.
அதுபோல உலகத்தலைவர் எவருக்கும் சிலைவைத்து வழிபடாத சமுகம், எம்.ஜி.ஆர் என்ற அந்த தலைவனுக்குமட்டும் சிலையெழுப்பி தலைகுனிந்து இன்றும் வணக்கம் சொல்லிக்கொண்டிருக்கின்றது. ஏனெனின் இலங்கைத்தமிழனின் இன உணர்வுக்கும், விடியல் என்ற பயணத்திற்குமான “ஆணிவேர்” எம்.ஜி.ஆர் என்ற அந்த அன்பு மனிதனே என்பதில் இன்றுவரை அந்த சமுகம் அசைக்கமுடியாத நம்பிக்கையுடன் நெஞ்சில் வைத்து துதித்துகொண்டிருக்கின்றது.

மருதூர் கோபாலமேனன் இராமச்சிந்திரன் இதேநாள் 1917 ஆம் ஆண்டு இலங்கையில் நாவலப்பிட்டி என்னும் இடத்தில் பிறந்து டிசெம்பர் 24 1987ஆம் ஆண்டு உடலால் மறைந்தாலும் இன்றுவரை கோடிக்கணக்கான உள்ளங்களில் என்றுமே ஒரு சக்கரவர்த்தியாக வாழ்ந்துகொண்டிருக்கின்றார்.
எம்.ஜி.ஆர் உடைய திரையுலக வாழ்க்கை, அரசியல் வாழ்க்கை என்பவற்றை சொல்லப்போனால் அது சூரியனுக்கே கண்ணாடி பிடித்து காட்டுவதுபோலாகிவிடும்.
எனவே என்பார்வையிலும், என் அனுபவங்களிலும் எம்.ஜி.ஆர் என்ற கோணத்தில் போகின்றேன்.

1987 ஆம் ஆண்டுகளின் முன்பகுதி பாரிய அனர்த்தங்கள் ஆபத்துக்கள், குண்டுவீச்சுக்கள், ஷெல் வீச்சுக்களுக்கு மத்தியில் நாளை எங்கள் உயிர் ஒட்டுமொத்தமாக பறிக்கப்பட்டுவிடும் என்ற பீதியுடன் நாம் வாழ்ந்துவந்தாலும், எம்.ஜி.ஆர் இருக்கின்றார் என்ற தைரியம் எம் சுற்றத்தில் உள்ள பெரியவர்களின் பேச்சுக்களிலும், போராளிகளின் நம்பிக்கைகளிலும் தெளிவாகத்தெரிந்தமையினை அப்போது 09 வயதுதான் என்றாலும் தெளிவாகப்புரிந்துகொண்டேன்.
உணவுக்கு பஞ்சம் ஏற்பட்ட நிலையில் உணவுகளுடன் வந்த இந்தியக்கடற்படை கப்பல்கள் இலங்கை கடற்படையினால் எச்சரிக்கப்பட்டு, திரும்பி அனுப்பட்டதும், ஆனால் உடனயடியாகவே பிற நாடு ஒன்றின் வான்பரப்பு என்றாலும் வாடுவது தமிழ் இனம் என்ற எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் அசைக்கமுடியாத பிடிமானத்தால் இந்திய மிராஜ் விமானங்கள் இலங்கைக்கு மேலாக சுற்றிவந்து உணவுப்பொருட்களை கொட்டிவிட்டு சென்றதும்,
அப்போது எங்களுக்கு வானில் இருந்து அருள் புரிந்தது மிராஜ்களாக தெரியவில்லை எம்.ஜி.ஆராகவே தெரிந்தார்.

ஆனால் சில சூழ்ச்சிகளால், இந்திய அமைதி காக்கும் படை என்ற பெயரில், ஈழத்தமிழர்களின் தாயகங்களில் சிங்களவனையும் மீறிய ஊழித்தாண்டவங்கள் இடம்பெற்றபோது, நோய்ப்படுக்கையில் படுத்திருந்தாலும் அவர்களுக்காக ஏங்கிய ஒரே உன்னதமான ஜீவன் எம்.ஜி.ஆர் மட்டுமே.
இத்தனை கொடுமைகளுக்கும் மத்தியில் நாம் இருக்கும்வேளைகளில், இந்திய அமைதிகாக்கும் படைகள், ட்ராக்குலாக்களாக எங்கள் இரத்தங்களை வெறிகொண்டு குடித்துவந்த நிலையில், எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் இழப்பு எங்களின் இழப்பாகவே எங்களுக்கும்தோன்றியது.

ஐயோ… எங்களைக்காப்பாற்ற இனி எவரும் எம் இனத்தில் இல்லை என்ற அன்றைய நாட்களின் அந்த மக்களின் அவலக்குரல் இறுதிமட்டும் தீர்க்கதரிசனமாகவே போய்விட்டது.
எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் எங்கள் மீதான் கரிசனை வெறும் வார்த்தைகளாக இருக்கவில்லை, அரசியல் இலாபங்களாக இருக்கவில்லை, அதற்கான தேவைகளும் உச்சத்தில் இருந்த அவருக்கு இருக்கவில்லை. காசுக்காகவோ, தன் காரியங்களுக்காகவோ அது இருக்கவில்லை. உண்மையான உணர்வு, பாசம், நேசிப்புக்களுக்காகவே அது இருந்தது. அந்த நேசம், பாசம் அவர் மறையும் வரை அவரிடம் உச்சமாக இருந்தது.
நிச்சயம் எம் மீதான ஒரு பெரும் ஏக்கத்துடனனேயே அந்த ஜீவன் பிரிந்திருக்கும் என்பது ஈழத்தமிழரின் அசைக்கமுடியாத உண்மை.

சென்னை சென்ற முதலாவது நாள்.. முதல்வேலையாக மரினாபீச்சுக்கு சென்று அங்கே..இங்கே பார்க்காமல் நேராகச்சென்றேன் எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் புகழுடல் “ஈழத்தமிழன் விடிவு பற்றிய நல்லசெய்தி தன் கல்லறையின் காதுகளில் விழாதா” என்ற ஏக்கத்துடன் இருக்கும் இடத்திற்கு.
தூரத்தில் “எம்.சி.ஆரின் வாச்சு சத்தம் கேக்குதுப்பா.. என்று சிலர் கல்லறையில் காதுகளை வைத்து கேட்டுக்கொண்டிருந்தனர். சிலர் வேடிக்கையாக திறப்புக்களால் தட்டிக்கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். இவர்கள் அகலும்வரை காத்திருந்துவிட்டு அந்த இடத்திற்கு செல்கின்றேன். கண்கள் கலங்குகின்றன, இருதயத்தில் ஒரு பரிதவிப்பு, இதோ கோடி இயதங்களில் வாழும் ஒருவரின், எங்கள் நெஞ்சங்களில் என்றும் வாழும் ஒரு உன்னதமானவரின் உறங்கும் இடத்திற்கு செல்கின்றேன் என்ற பதபதப்பு. அமைதியாக கைகளை கட்டி நானும் என்னுடன் வந்த நண்பர்களும் நிற்கின்றோம். எனக்கு கண் குழமாகிவிட்டது. நண்பர்களை பார்த்தேன் அதில் ஒருவர் அழுதே விட்டார். “காற்று நம்மை அடிமை என்று சொல்லவில்லையே” என்று தொடர்ந்து அந்த பாடல் வரிகள் மனதிற்குள் கேட்டுக்கொண்டிருந்தன.

பக்கத்தில் கடமையில் இருந்த காவல்அதிகாரி தம்பி நீங்கள் சிலோனுங்களா? என்று கேட்டார். ஓம்.. என்றோம். ஏதோ சொல்லவந்தவர், கல்லறையினையும் எங்களையும் பார்த்து தொண்டைவரை வந்த வசனங்களை கஸ்டப்பட்டு விழுங்கிவிட்டு, எங்களை தட்டிக்கொடுத்துவிட்டு அப்பால் சென்றார்.
தமிழ்நாட்டில் எம் இனத்தின் எம்மீதான் அன்றைய நிலையாக அவரது செய்கை சிம்போலிக்காக இருந்தது நமக்கு.

மக்கள் திலகத்தின் படங்களுக்கே உரிய செவிக்கினிய பாடல்கள் நிறைந்த இப்படம் சென்னை வெலிங்டன், பிராட்வே,

புதுச்சேரியில் எம்ஜியார் செல்வம் என்கின்ற இவரை அறிமுக படுத்துவதில் மகிழ்ச்சியடைகிறேன். இவர் பால் கறக்கும் தொழில் செய்பவர்..தலைவர் மேல் தீராத பாசமும் பக்தியும் கொண்டவர்..இவருடைய வீட்டில்...இல்லை... குடிசையில் கடவுள் படங்களை காண்பது மிக குறைவு..முழுக்க முழுக்க தலைவர் படங்களே..சாப்பாட்டுக்கு பணம் இல்லாவிட்டாலும் தலைவரின் பிறந்த நாளை கொண்டாடுவதும் நினைவு நாளை அனுசரிப்பதுமே இவருக்கு சந்தோஷம். எனக்கு நினைவு தெரிந்த நாளிலிருந்து தலைவர் படங்களை பார்த்த நாளிலிருந்து இவரை அறிவேன்..இவர் தலைவரின் படங்கள் வந்தால் போதும்..தீபம் கட்டுவதும் தேங்காய் உடைப்பதும்..எவ்வளவு கஷ்டத்திலும் இவர் இதை தவறாது செய்வார்..15 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு அஜந்தா திரையரங்கில் மாட்டுக்கார வேலன் திரையிட்டபோது தலைவரின் கட் அவுட்டுக்கு மாலை போடும்போது கீழே விழுந்து காலை ஒடித்துக்கொண்டார்..இன்னும் இவர் கால் சரியாகவில்லை..ஆனாலும் அவர் தலைவருக்கு செய்ய வேண்டிய அனைத்தையும் செய்து கொண்டிருக்கிறார்.மிகவும் வறுமையில் இருக்கும் இவரை நமது தெய்வம் கைவிடவில்லை..எங்கள் பொன்மனச்செம்மல் அறக்கட்டளைக்கு இவரை அடையாளம் காட்டி அறக்கட்டளை மூலம் உதவிகள் செய்து வருகிறோம். இன்னும் வாடகை குடிசையில் வாழும் இவருக்கு ஒரு வீடு கிடைக்க அறக்கட்டளை முயற்சி எடுத்து வருகிறது.

ஆயிரத்தில் அல்ல கோடிகளில் ஒருவர்.

ஒரு இலங்கைத்தமிழனது பார்வையில் எம்.ஜி.ராமச்சந்திரன் என்பவர், தலைவனுக்குத்தலைவன், இதய தெய்வம் என்ற நிலையில் என்றும் மிகப்பெரிய கௌரவத்துடனும், நன்றியுடனும் பார்க்கப்படும் ஒருவர்.
எந்தவொரு கலைஞனுக்கும் அடிமைப்பட்டுவிடாத இலங்கைத்தமிழன், எம்.ஜி.ஆர் என்ற நாமத்திற்கு மட்டும் கொண்டாட்டம் எடுத்தகாலங்கள் ஆச்சரியமானது.
அதுபோல உலகத்தலைவர் எவருக்கும் சிலைவைத்து வழிபடாத சமுகம், எம்.ஜி.ஆர் என்ற அந்த தலைவனுக்குமட்டும் சிலையெழுப்பி தலைகுனிந்து இன்றும் வணக்கம் சொல்லிக்கொண்டிருக்கின்றது. ஏனெனின் இலங்கைத்தமிழனின் இன உணர்வுக்கும், விடியல் என்ற பயணத்திற்குமான “ஆணிவேர்” எம்.ஜி.ஆர் என்ற அந்த அன்பு மனிதனே என்பதில் இன்றுவரை அந்த சமுகம் அசைக்கமுடியாத நம்பிக்கையுடன் நெஞ்சில் வைத்து துதித்துகொண்டிருக்கின்றது.

மருதூர் கோபாலமேனன் இராமச்சிந்திரன் இதேநாள் 1917 ஆம் ஆண்டு இலங்கையில் நாவலப்பிட்டி என்னும் இடத்தில் பிறந்து டிசெம்பர் 24 1987ஆம் ஆண்டு உடலால் மறைந்தாலும் இன்றுவரை கோடிக்கணக்கான உள்ளங்களில் என்றுமே ஒரு சக்கரவர்த்தியாக வாழ்ந்துகொண்டிருக்கின்றார்.
எம்.ஜி.ஆர் உடைய திரையுலக வாழ்க்கை, அரசியல் வாழ்க்கை என்பவற்றை சொல்லப்போனால் அது சூரியனுக்கே கண்ணாடி பிடித்து காட்டுவதுபோலாகிவிடும்.
எனவே என்பார்வையிலும், என் அனுபவங்களிலும் எம்.ஜி.ஆர் என்ற கோணத்தில் போகின்றேன்.

1987 ஆம் ஆண்டுகளின் முன்பகுதி பாரிய அனர்த்தங்கள் ஆபத்துக்கள், குண்டுவீச்சுக்கள், ஷெல் வீச்சுக்களுக்கு மத்தியில் நாளை எங்கள் உயிர் ஒட்டுமொத்தமாக பறிக்கப்பட்டுவிடும் என்ற பீதியுடன் நாம் வாழ்ந்துவந்தாலும், எம்.ஜி.ஆர் இருக்கின்றார் என்ற தைரியம் எம் சுற்றத்தில் உள்ள பெரியவர்களின் பேச்சுக்களிலும், போராளிகளின் நம்பிக்கைகளிலும் தெளிவாகத்தெரிந்தமையினை அப்போது 09 வயதுதான் என்றாலும் தெளிவாகப்புரிந்துகொண்டேன்.
உணவுக்கு பஞ்சம் ஏற்பட்ட நிலையில் உணவுகளுடன் வந்த இந்தியக்கடற்படை கப்பல்கள் இலங்கை கடற்படையினால் எச்சரிக்கப்பட்டு, திரும்பி அனுப்பட்டதும், ஆனால் உடனயடியாகவே பிற நாடு ஒன்றின் வான்பரப்பு என்றாலும் வாடுவது தமிழ் இனம் என்ற எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் அசைக்கமுடியாத பிடிமானத்தால் இந்திய மிராஜ் விமானங்கள் இலங்கைக்கு மேலாக சுற்றிவந்து உணவுப்பொருட்களை கொட்டிவிட்டு சென்றதும்,
அப்போது எங்களுக்கு வானில் இருந்து அருள் புரிந்தது மிராஜ்களாக தெரியவில்லை எம்.ஜி.ஆராகவே தெரிந்தார்.

ஆனால் சில சூழ்ச்சிகளால், இந்திய அமைதி காக்கும் படை என்ற பெயரில், ஈழத்தமிழர்களின் தாயகங்களில் சிங்களவனையும் மீறிய ஊழித்தாண்டவங்கள் இடம்பெற்றபோது, நோய்ப்படுக்கையில் படுத்திருந்தாலும் அவர்களுக்காக ஏங்கிய ஒரே உன்னதமான ஜீவன் எம்.ஜி.ஆர் மட்டுமே.
இத்தனை கொடுமைகளுக்கும் மத்தியில் நாம் இருக்கும்வேளைகளில், இந்திய அமைதிகாக்கும் படைகள், ட்ராக்குலாக்களாக எங்கள் இரத்தங்களை வெறிகொண்டு குடித்துவந்த நிலையில், எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் இழப்பு எங்களின் இழப்பாகவே எங்களுக்கும்தோன்றியது.

ஐயோ… எங்களைக்காப்பாற்ற இனி எவரும் எம் இனத்தில் இல்லை என்ற அன்றைய நாட்களின் அந்த மக்களின் அவலக்குரல் இறுதிமட்டும் தீர்க்கதரிசனமாகவே போய்விட்டது.
எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் எங்கள் மீதான் கரிசனை வெறும் வார்த்தைகளாக இருக்கவில்லை, அரசியல் இலாபங்களாக இருக்கவில்லை, அதற்கான தேவைகளும் உச்சத்தில் இருந்த அவருக்கு இருக்கவில்லை. காசுக்காகவோ, தன் காரியங்களுக்காகவோ அது இருக்கவில்லை. உண்மையான உணர்வு, பாசம், நேசிப்புக்களுக்காகவே அது இருந்தது. அந்த நேசம், பாசம் அவர் மறையும் வரை அவரிடம் உச்சமாக இருந்தது.
நிச்சயம் எம் மீதான ஒரு பெரும் ஏக்கத்துடனனேயே அந்த ஜீவன் பிரிந்திருக்கும் என்பது ஈழத்தமிழரின் அசைக்கமுடியாத உண்மை.

சென்னை சென்ற முதலாவது நாள்.. முதல்வேலையாக மரினாபீச்சுக்கு சென்று அங்கே..இங்கே பார்க்காமல் நேராகச்சென்றேன் எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் புகழுடல் “ஈழத்தமிழன் விடிவு பற்றிய நல்லசெய்தி தன் கல்லறையின் காதுகளில் விழாதா” என்ற ஏக்கத்துடன் இருக்கும் இடத்திற்கு.
தூரத்தில் “எம்.சி.ஆரின் வாச்சு சத்தம் கேக்குதுப்பா.. என்று சிலர் கல்லறையில் காதுகளை வைத்து கேட்டுக்கொண்டிருந்தனர். சிலர் வேடிக்கையாக திறப்புக்களால் தட்டிக்கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். இவர்கள் அகலும்வரை காத்திருந்துவிட்டு அந்த இடத்திற்கு செல்கின்றேன். கண்கள் கலங்குகின்றன, இருதயத்தில் ஒரு பரிதவிப்பு, இதோ கோடி இயதங்களில் வாழும் ஒருவரின், எங்கள் நெஞ்சங்களில் என்றும் வாழும் ஒரு உன்னதமானவரின் உறங்கும் இடத்திற்கு செல்கின்றேன் என்ற பதபதப்பு. அமைதியாக கைகளை கட்டி நானும் என்னுடன் வந்த நண்பர்களும் நிற்கின்றோம். எனக்கு கண் குழமாகிவிட்டது. நண்பர்களை பார்த்தேன் அதில் ஒருவர் அழுதே விட்டார். “காற்று நம்மை அடிமை என்று சொல்லவில்லையே” என்று தொடர்ந்து அந்த பாடல் வரிகள் மனதிற்குள் கேட்டுக்கொண்டிருந்தன.

பக்கத்தில் கடமையில் இருந்த காவல்அதிகாரி தம்பி நீங்கள் சிலோனுங்களா? என்று கேட்டார். ஓம்.. என்றோம். ஏதோ சொல்லவந்தவர், கல்லறையினையும் எங்களையும் பார்த்து தொண்டைவரை வந்த வசனங்களை கஸ்டப்பட்டு விழுங்கிவிட்டு, எங்களை தட்டிக்கொடுத்துவிட்டு அப்பால் சென்றார்.
தமிழ்நாட்டில் எம் இனத்தின் எம்மீதான் அன்றைய நிலையாக அவரது செய்கை சிம்போலிக்காக இருந்தது நமக்கு.

இதோ இப்போது திக்குத்தெரியாத காட்டில் என்ன செய்வதென்று தெரியாது தவிப்புடன் இப்போது எம்மினம் அடிபட்டு நிற்கின்றது. அப்போது திக்கற்றுநின்ற நமக்கு இதுதான் கிழக்கு என்று தெளிவாகக்காட்டிய அந்த எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் பாசக்கரங்கள். இப்போது மீண்டும் திக்கற்ற சமுதாயமாக இருக்கும் நமக்கு ஒரு ஆன்மபலமாக நின்று வழிகாட்டும் என்ற நம்பிக்கையுடன்….இன்றும் வாழ்ந்துகொண்டிருக்கின்றோம்.

படம் வந்தபோது விகடனில் வந்த விமர்சனம். நன்றி, விகடன்!
சந்தர்: ஒரே மாதிரி இருக்கும் இரு நபர்களின் ஆள் மாறாட்டத்தை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டு வந்த படங்களிலேயே இதுதான் சிறந்த படம்.
சேகர்: இடம் மாறி வந்தவர்கள், தொடர்ந்து அங்கேயே தங்கிவிடவேண்டிய அவசியத்தை ஏற்படுத்தி இருப்பதில் இந்தக் கதை புதுமையாக இருந்தது. முன் பின் தெரியாத ஒருத்தியின் நல்வாழ்வுக்காகவும், அவள் குழந்தையின் மேல் உள்ள பாசத்துக்காகவும் ஜமீன்தார் வீட்டில் இளங்கோ ராமுவாகவே இருக்கவேண்டிய சூழ்நிலையை ஏற்படுத்தியது மிகவும் பொருத்தமாக இருந்தது.
சேகர்: ஆமாம், இளங்கோ ஜமீன் மாளிகைக்குள் நுழைந்தவுடன், அந்த வீட்டுக் கதை முழுவதையும் பாத்திரங்களின் பேச்சின் மூலமே இளங்கோவுக்குப் புரிய வைத்தது, நல்ல அமைப்பு!

சேகர்: அதை எம்.ஜி.ஆர். நடித்த விதம், அதை விடப் பிரமாதம்! பயந்தங்கொள்ளியாக வரும்போது, சிரிப்புடன் அழவும் வைக்கிறார். முரடனாக வரும்போது, வீரத்தைக் காட்டிச் சிரிக்க வைக்கிறார்.

"நாடோடி மன்னன்' வெற்றி, இமாலய வெற்றியாக அமைந்து எம்.ஜி.ஆருக்கு பெயர் கிடைத்தது.

மதுரையில் அப்போது நடைபெற்ற வெற்றி விழாவில் தலைமை தாங்கிப் பேசிய பேரறிஞர் அண்ணா கூறினார்:

""உலகத்தில் மிகவும் கஷ்டமான விஷயம் ஒரு புதுமையை மக்களுக்குப் புரியவைப்பது, அதை அவர்கள் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள வைப்பது.

நம் நாட்டைப் பொறுத்தவரை எதைச் சொல்லுகிறோம் என்பது பெரிதல்ல, யார் சொல்லுகிறார் என்பதே பெரியது.

இப்போது எம்.ஜி.ஆர். சொல்லியிருக்கிறார். அதை மக்களும் ஒப்புக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். இல்லையானால் திரும்பத் திரும்ப வந்து பார்த்து, திரையிட்ட இருபது அரங்குகளிலும் படத்தை 200 நாள் ஓட விட்டிருப்பார்களா?

"நாடோடி மன்னன்' படத்தில் நடந்த பல புரட்சிகளில் ஒன்று அதில் நடித்தவர்களே ஒரு விழா எடுத்து எம்.ஜி.ஆருக்கு ஆள் உயர வெள்ளி சுழற்கோப்பையை கொடுத்தனர். விற்பன்னர்களுக்கு, தயாரிப்பாளர்தான் பரிசு கொடுப்பார். இப்படத்துக்காக விஜயா கார்டனில் ஒரு விழாவை வைத்து எம்.என். நம்பியார், பி.எஸ். வீரப்பா, பானுமதி, சரோஜாதேவி, ஜி. சகுந்தலா, ஜி.கே. ராமு, எஸ்.எம்.சுப்பையா நாயுடு ஆகிய ஏழு பேரும் அதைக் கொடுத்தனர்.

"நாடோடி மன்னன்' பட வெற்றியில் என்னைப் பற்றியும் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். குறிப்பிடுகிறார் என்றால் அது அந்தப் படக் குழுவினருக்குத்தான் சேரும். ஸ்டூடியோ முதலாளி என்ற வகையில் படத் தயாரிப்பாளருக்குத் தரவேண்டிய ஒத்துழைப்பைத்தான் தந்து என் கடமையைத்தான் செய்தேன்.

எங்க வீட்டுப் பிள்ளை' படத்தை மற்றவர்கள் எதிர்பார்த்ததற்கு மாறாக, திட்டமிட்டதற்கு முன்னரே முடித்துக் கொடுத்தார். சுருக்கமாகச் சொன்னால், என் சுமையை அவர் தன் சுமையாக்கிக் கொண்டார்.

எம்.ஜி.ஆர். ஏற்கெனவே "நாடோடி மன்னன்' படத்தில் இரட்டை வேடத்தில் அருமையாக நடித்த போதிலும், அவர் சமூகப் படத்தில் மிகச் சிறப்பாக இரட்டை வேடங்களில் நடித்த படம் "எங்க வீட்டுப் பிள்ளை'. எம்.ஜி.ஆருடைய மகத்தான வெற்றிப்படமான "எங்க வீட்டுப் பிள்ளை' ஏழு திரையரங்குகளில் வெற்றி விழா கொண்டாடி வரலாறு படைத்தது.

எங்க வீட்டுப் பிள்ளையின் சென்னை நகர விநியோக உரிமையை எம்.ஜி.ஆர். பிக்சர்ஸ் வாங்கி இருந்தது. படம் வெள்ளி விழாவைத் தாண்டி ஓடியதால், விநியோகஸ்தர்களுக்கு நிறைய லாபம் கிடைத்தது.

எம்.ஜி.ஆர். பிக்சர்ஸ் அதிபரான எம்.ஜி.ஆர். தனக்கு அதிக லாபம் வந்ததால் ஒரு தொகையை எங்களுக்கு வழங்க முடிவு செய்தார். விஜயா இண்டர்நேஷனல் பெயரில் ஒரு லட்ச ரூபாய்க்கான செக் அனுப்பி வைத்தார். அத்துடன், நான் பேசிய தொகைக்கு மேல் லாபம் வந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறது. எனவே இந்தத் தொகையை தாங்கள் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்று ஒரு கடிதத்தையும் இணைத்திருந்தார்.

வாழ்வில் எவ்வளவோ பேரைத் தூக்கிவிட்ட எம்.ஜி.ஆர். ஒரு சந்தர்ப்பத்தில் என்னைத் தோளில் சுமந்தார் என்றால் உங்களுக்கு வியப்பாக இருக்கும்.

"எங்க வீட்டுப் பிள்ளை' படம் எடுத்து முடித்த நேரம். தமிழகம் எங்கும் படம் வெளியிட்டாகி விட்டது. நாளுக்கு நாள் அதற்கு கூட்டம் அதிகரித்துக்கொண்டே வந்தது. எம்.ஜி.ஆருக்கு மிகவும் சந்தோஷம். மக்கள் படத்தை எப்படி ரசிக்கிறார்கள் என்பதை நேரில் பார்க்க அவர் ஆசைப்பட்டார். நானும் ஒப்புக் கொண்டேன். சென்னையில் "எங்க வீட்டுப் பிள்ளை' நடைபெற்ற ஒரு திரையரங்குக்கு அவருடன் நானும் சென்றேன்.

சென்ற இடத்தில் மக்கள் எம்.ஜி.ஆரைப் பார்த்துவிட்டார்கள். அவரைச் சூழ்ந்துவிட்டனர். கூட்டத்தில் நான் சிக்கிக் கொண்டேன். எம்.ஜி.ஆர். எப்படியோ கூட்டத்தை சமாளித்துக்கொண்டு தன் காரை நோக்கிப் போய்விட்டார். நானோ, மக்கள் வெள்ளத்தில் அகப்பட்டுக் கொண்டேன். எளிதாக, அந்த வெள்ளத்திலிருந்து மீண்டு வர என்னால் முடியவில்லை. காருக்கு அருகே சென்றதும் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். என்னைத் தேடிப் பார்த்தார். நான் அங்கு இல்லை .உடனே, அவர் மக்கள் வெள்ளத்தை விலக்கிக் கொண்டு என்னிடம் வந்தார். என்னை அலக்காகத் தூக்கி தன் தோளிலே வைத்தார். ஒரு ஹீரோ மாதிரியே தூக்கி என்னை காரில் வைத்துவிட்டு "விர்'ரென்று நடந்தார் தன் காரை நோக்கி.

வேறு காரில் என்னை அழைத்து வரச் சொல்லி இருக்கலாம். ஆனால் தன்னை நம்பி வந்தவரை, காரியம் முடிந்தவுடன் நடுவழியில் விட்டுச் செல்லாமல் அவரை எப்படியாவது பாதுகாக்க வேண்டும் என்பதே அவரது கொள்கை.

மக்கள் வெள்ளத்திலிருந்து மீட்கப்பட்ட மகிழ்ச்சி உணர்வுடன் நான் இருந்தேன். ஆனால் எம்.ஜி.ஆரோ ஏதும் நடக்காததுபோல சர்வ சாதாரணமாக இருந்தார். இந்தப் பண்பு, தோழமை உணர்வுதான் அவரை தமிழகத்தின் உச்சாணிக் கொம்பில் உட்கார வைத்தது.

ஏவி.எம். தயாரிப்பில் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். நடித்த ஒரே படம் `அன்பே வா'
ஏவி.எம். தயாரிப்பில் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். நடித்த ஒரே படம், ஏவி.எம்.ஸ்டூடியோவின் முதல் கலர்ப்படம் என்ற பெருமைக்கு உரியது "அன்பே வா." எம்.ஜி.ஆருடன் சரோஜாதேவி ஜோடியாக நடித்தார். நடிகர் அசோகன், எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் நெருங்கிய நண்பர். ஏவி.எம். சரவணனுக்கும் நண்பர்.

"ஏவி.எம். பெரிய படக்கம்பெனி. அதில் நீங்கள் நடிக்க வேண்டும்" என்று எம்.ஜி.ஆரிடம் அசோகன் அடிக்கடி கூறுவார். அதேபோல் சரவணனிடம், "எம்.ஜி.ஆர். எவ்வளவு பெரிய நடிகர்! அவரை வைத்து நீங்கள் படம் பண்ண வேண்டாமா? என்று கேட்பார்.

அசோகன் முயற்சியால் "அன்பே வா" படத்தில் நடிக்க எம்.ஜி.ஆர். ஒப்புக்கொண்டார். மொத்தம் 72 நாள் "கால்ஷீட்" கொடுத்தார். "அன்பே வா" படத்திற்கான கதையை ஏ.சி.திருலோகசந்தர் எழுதினார். கதை, முழுக்க முழுக்க எம்.ஜி. ஆர். பாணியில் இருந்து மாறுபட்டது.

எஸ்டேட் ஒன்றின் சொந்தக்காரரான எம்.ஜி.ஆர், தான் யார் என்பதைக் காட்டிக்கொள்ளாமல் எஸ்டேட் பங்களாவில் தங்குகிறார். அங்கு சரோஜாதேவியை சந்திக்கிறார். இருவருக்கும் இடையே ஏற்படும் காதலையும், ஊடலையும் வைத்து, கதை சுவையாகப் பின்னப்பட்டிருந்தது. அரசியல் பிரசாரம் அறவே இல்லை.

இதற்கு ஆரூர் தாஸ் வசனம் எழுதினார். இசை எம்.எஸ்.விசுவ நாதன். பாடல்கள் வாலி. டைரக்ஷன் திருலோகசந்தர். சிம்லா, ஊட்டி முதலிய இடங்களில் படப்பிடிப்பு நடந்தது.

1966 பொங்கல் தினத்தன்று வெளியான "அன்பே வா" மகத்தான வெற்றிப்படமாக அமைந்தது.

நடிப்பு, இசை, படப்பிடிப்பு எல்லாமே தரமாக அமைந்திருந்தன.

"ராஜாவின் பார்வை ராணியின் பக்கம்", "புதிய வானம் புதிய பூமி", "நான் பார்த்ததிலே அவள் ஒருத்தி யைத்தான்", "அன்பே வா", "லவ் பேர்ட்ஸ்" முதலிய பாடல்கள் ஹிட்டாயின.

எம்.ஜி.ஆர். அதுவரை நடித்த மிகப்பெரிய வெற்றிப்படங்களில் "அன்பே வா"வும் ஒன்று. இந்தப் படத்தில் நடித்ததற்காக எம்.ஜி.ஆருக்கு கொடுக்கப்பட்ட தொகை ரூ.3 லட்சம். சரோஜா தேவிக்கு ரூ.90 ஆயிரம்.

‘ராணி சம்யுக்தா’ வரலாற்றுப் படம். ‘விக்கிரமாதித்தன்’ கற்பனை கலந்த ராஜாராணிப் படம்.

இவற்றுள் 1962 – ஆம் ஆண்டு தமிழ்ப் புத்தாண்டுத் திருநாளில் வெளியான படமே ராணி சம்யுக்தா. சரஸ்வதி பிக்சர்ஸ் தயாரித்து, டி. யோகானந்த் இயக்கிய இப்படத்தின், திரைக்கதை, வசனம், பாடல்கள் அனைத்தையும் எழுதியவர் கவியரசர் கண்ணதாசனே.

முதல் சுற்றில் முழு வெற்றியை எட்டாத இப்படம். பின்னர் கவிஞரின் தெவிட்டாத இன்பத்தைத் தேனாய்ப் பொழிந்த கருத்து நிறைந்த பாடல்களுக்காகவும்; கனிரசமான வசனங்களுக்காகவும் தமிழகமெங்கும் வெற்றிக்கொடியை ஏந்திப் பவனி வந்தது.

ராணி சம்யுக்தாவாக நாட்டியப் பேரொளி பத்மினியும், பிருதிவிராஜனாகப் புரட்சி நடிகரும், ஜெயச்சந்திரனாக சகஸ்வர நாமமும், கோரி முகமதுவாக எம்.என். நம்பியாரும் நன்றாகவே நடித்திருந்தனர்.

கொள்கைப் பாடல்
இப்படத்தில் புரட்சி நடிகரின் அன்றைய இயக்கமான தி.மு.கழகத்தின் தேர்தல் சின்னமான உதயசூரியன் சின்னத்தை, நாட்டு மக்களின் உள்ளத்தில் பதிய வைக்கும் எண்ணத்தில் கவியரசர் ஒரு பாடலை எழுதினார்.

அதனை இப்போது காண்போமா?

“இதழிரண்டும் பாடட்டும்! இமையிரண்டும் மூடட்டும்!
உதயசூரியன் மலரும்போது உனது கண்கள் மலரட்டும்!”

இதுவோர் தாய் பாடும் தத்துவத் தாலாட்டு. கணவனோ போர்க்களத்தில் பகைவர்களைப் பாய்ந்து, பாய்ந்து வெட்டிச் சாய்த்து வெற்றி காணச் சென்றுள்ளான். அவனது தலைவியோ, பெற்ற மகனைத் தொட்டிலில் இட்டு, அந்த மகன் துயர் நீங்கிச் சுகமாக நித்திரை கொள்ளத் தாலாட்டுகிறாள்.

அந்தத் தலைவியாம் தாய் பாடும் தாலாட்டில், தென்றலென இன்ப சுகம் மிதந்து வரும்படிக் கவிஞர் எழுதிய நயமான வரிகளைக் கண்டீர்களா?

ஓர் இயக்கத்தின் சின்னத்திற்கு இதைவிட எப்படி ஏற்றம் பெற்றுத்தர முடியும்?

இந்த இனிய கீதம் இன்னும் தொடரும் விதத்தை நம் இதயங்கள் அறிய வேண்டாமா? தொடரும் கீதத்தை அறிந்திட வாருக்கள்!

“புதிய காலம் பிறந்ததென்று போர்முகத்தில் ஏறிநின்று
பகைவர் வீழப் போர்புரியும் நாட்டிலே – நீயும்
பழம்பெருமை விளக்க வந்தாய் வீட்டிலே – கண்ணே!
இதழிரண்டும் பாடட்டும்! இமையிரண்டும் மூடட்டும்!

அறிந்தீர்களா! அற்புதமான கீதத்தை….!

பழமைமிகு வரலாற்றுக்கதை கொண்ட திரைப்படத்தில், நாட்டு நடப்பினை நடமாட வைத்து, தமது இயக்கம் வளரும் தன்மையையும் இலைமறைக்காயாகக் காட்டி, தமது இயக்கச் சின்னத்தையும் நாட்டு மக்களின் இதயங்களில் இடம்பெறச் செய்த அற்புதத்தை அறிந்தீர்கள்!

இப்படி, திரைப்பட உலகில், கொண்ட கொள்கைகளை எடுத்துக்கூறி வளர்க்க எல்லோராலும் இயலுமா? அது எம்.ஜி.ஆர். போன்ற ஏற்றமிகு நடிகராலும், கண்ணதாசன் போன்ற கருத்தாழம் கொண்ட கவிஞராலும் மட்டுமே முடியும்.

நெஞ்சிருக்கும் வரைக்கும்!
‘ராணி சம்யுக்தா’ படத்தின் பாடல்கள் அனைத்துமே நம் நெஞ்சங்களை நெகிழவைத்து, சுவைகூட்டும் பாடல்களே!

பாரதி கண்ட புதுமைப்பெண்கள் புதிய வரவாய், புறப்பட்டு வரும் நாட்டிலே, பெண்கள் படும் இன்னல்களை நம் கவிஞர் கண்ணதாசன் பட்டியலிட்டுக் காட்டும் பாங்கினையும், பி. சுசீலா தம் குரலில் வேதனையோடு வெளிப்படுத்துவதையும் கேட்போமே!

“சித்திரத்தில் பெண்ணெழுதி
சீர்படுத்தும் மாநிலமே!
ஜீவனுள்ள பெண்ணினத்தை
வாழவிட மாட்டாயோ?”

பாடலின் தொடக்கத்திலேயே வெடித்துக் கிளம்பும் புரட்சியின் வேகம் புரிகிறதா?

இவைபோன்ற பாடல்களைப் புரட்சி நடிகர் தலைவரைப் பற்றி இப்படத்தின் நாயகி கூறுவதாகக் கவிஞர் எழுதிய காவிய கீதம் ஒன்றையும் கேட்போமே!

“நெஞ்சிருக்கும் வரைக்கம் நினைவிருக்கும் – அந்த
நினைவினில் அவர் முகம் நிறைந்திருக்கும் – எந்தன்
நெஞ்சிருக்கும் வரைக்கும் நினைவிருக்கும் – அந்த
நினைவினில் அவர் முகம் நிறைந்திருக்கும்!”

எம்.ஜி.ஆர். புகழை, என்றைக்கும் எடுத்துச் சொல்லும் காவிய கீதந்தானே இது.

இப்போதும் மக்கள் நெஞ்சங்கள் சொல்லும் உண்மை இதுதானே!

இன்னும் அவர்தோற்றம் எப்படியாம்?

“கொஞ்சும் இளமை குடியிருக்கும் – பார்வை
குறுகுறுக்கும்! மேனி பரபரக்கும்!”

- என்றும் பதினாறு எம்.ஜி.ஆரைக் கவிஞர் வேறு எப்படிச் சொல்லுவார்?

“வாளினிலே ஒருகை மலர்ந்திருக்கும்!”

என்றும்,

“தோளினுக்கும் மலைக்கும் தொடர்பிருக்கும்!”

என்றும், வெற்றித்திருமகன் எம்.ஜி.ஆரைக் கவியரசர் போற்றிப் புகழ்ந்திடுவார். புகழ்வதென்ன? உண்மை நிலையைத்தானே உலகறியக் கவிவேந்தன் கவிதை, சொல்லிச் சென்றது.

உன்னையறிந்தால்…?…..!
1964 – ஆம் ஆண்டு வெளிவந்த புரட்சி நடிகர் எம்.ஜி.ஆர் படங்கள் ஏழு. அவற்றில் வேட்டைக்காரன் என் கடமை, பணக்காரக் குடும்பம், தாயின் மடியில் ஆகிய நான்கு படங்களுக்குக் கண்ணதாசன் பாடல்களை எழுதினார்.

‘எம்.ஜி.ஆருக்குக் காதல் காட்சிகளில் நடிக்கத் தெரியாது!’ என்று, விளம்பரமிக்க சினிமா செய்திகளை அதிகம் வெளியிடும் நாளிதழ் எழுதிவிட்ட செய்தியொன்று, எம்.ஜி.ஆருக்குப் பெரும் மனத்தாங்கலை ஏற்படுத்தியிருந்த நேரம்.

தேவர் பிலிம்ஸ் சார்பில் ‘வேட்டைக்காரன்’ படம் தயாரித்துக் கொண்டிருந்த சமயமும் அதுவே. 1957 – ஆம் ஆண்டு ‘மகாதேவி’ படத்திற்குப் பின்னர், 1963 – ஆம் ஆண்டு ‘பரிசு’ படத்தில் நடித்த ‘நடிகையர் திலகம்’ சாவித்திரி எம்.ஜி.ஆரோடு இணைந்து நடிக்கும் படமும் அதுவே.

கவிஞருக்கு, சூழ்நிலையின் தன்மை புரிந்தது. எம்.ஜி.ஆரும் சற்று மாறுபட்ட ஜேம்ஸ்பாண்ட் பாணி உடையில் கம்பீரத்தோடு புலியை வேட்டையாடும் வேட்டைக்காரனாக நடித்தார்.

கவிஞருக்குச் சொல்லவா வேண்ண்டும்? படத்தில் காதல் ரசம் சொட்டும் பாடல்களையும், நீதி சொல்லும் பாடல்களையும், கே.வி. மகாதேவன் இசையில் கேட்போர் மயங்கும் வகையில் வாரி வாரித் தந்தார்.

“என்……
கண்ணனுக் கெத்தனை கோவிலோ?
காவலில் எத்தனை தெய்வமோ?
மன்னனுக் கெத்தனை உள்ளமோ?
மனதில் எத்தனை வெள்ளமோ?…”

எனத் தொடங்கி,

“என் கண்ணன் தொட்டது பொன்னாகும்! – அவன்
கனிந்த புன்னகை பெண்ணாகும்!
மங்கை எனக்குக் கண்ணாகும்!
மறந்து விட்டால் என்னாகும்?”

என்று, கதையின் நாயகன் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். புகழுபாடும் கீதமாக, பி. சுசீலாவின் குரலில், நாயகி பாடுவதாக முதல் பாடல் படத்தில் எழுந்தது.

இரண்டாவதாக,

ஆண்: மஞ்சள் முகமே வருக!
மங்கல விளக்கே வருக!

பெண்: கொஞ்சும் தமிழே வருக!
கோடான கோடி தருக!”

என, எம்.ஜி.ஆரின், பழுதுபடாத அன்றைய குரலைக் கொஞ்சும் தமிழாக்கிக் கோடான கோடி இன்பம் தரும் கோமானாக்கி’

“கேட்டாலும் காதல் கிடைக்கும் – மனம்
கேளாமல் அள்ளிக் கொடுக்கும்”

என்றே, அவரைக் காதல் தலைவனாக்கியே பாடல் ஒலிக்கும்.

மூன்றாவதாக,

பெண்: “கதாநாயகன் கதை சொன்னான்! – அந்தக்
கண்ணுக்குள்ளும் இந்தப்பெண்ணுக்குள்ளும் ஒரு
கதாநாயகன் கதை சொன்னான்!”

இப்படிக் கண்ணுக்குள்ளும், பெண்ணுக்குள்ளும் காதல் கதை பேசும் கதாநாயகன்;

பெண்: “காவிரிக் கரைக்கு வரச் சொன்னான் – இளங்
கன்னத்திலே ஒன்று தரச் சொன்னான்!
கையுடன் கைகளைச்
சேர்த்துக் கொண்டான் – எனைக்
கட்டிக் கொண்டான்! நெஞ்சில் ஒட்டிக் கொண்டான்!”

எனக் ‘காவிரிக்கரையில் இளமை தவழும் தன் கன்னத்தில் ஒன்று தரச் சொன்னான்!’ என்றே, நாயகனின் காதல் ரசனை பற்றிய பாடலைத் தொடர்ந்து,

காதல் மொழிகளைக் கவிதையில் கவிஞர் வாரி வாரி இறைத்து,

ஆண்: “மாமல்லபுரத்துக் கடல் அருகே – இந்த
மங்கை இருந்தாள் என்னருகே!
பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்தது வான்நிலவு – நாங்கள்
படித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தோம் தேன்நிலவு!”

என, இளைய நெஞ்சங்களில் இன்பக் கோயிலையே, கண்ணதாசன் கட்டி முடிப்பார்.

எம்.ஜி.ஆருக்கா, காதல் காட்சிகளில் நடிக்கத் தெரியாது! காதல் வேட்டையாடும் கட்டிளங்காளையாம் வேட்டைக்காரனைப் போய்ப் பாருங்கள்! என்ற வேகத்தையே இப்பாடல் காட்சிகள் எழுப்பியது.



அந்த அளவிற்கு, அன்றைய இளைய சமுதாயத்தை, சாதாரண நிலையில் தயாரிக்கப்பட்ட ‘வேட்டைக்காரன்’ படம் ஈர்த்துப் பெரும் வெற்றியைப் படைத்தது.

இப்படத்தில், இன்னும்,

பெண்: “ஹூம்…ஹூம்….ஹூம்!
மெதுவா மெதுவா தொடலாமா?
மேனியிலே கை படலாமா?”

என்று தொடரும் பாடலில்,

பெண்: “வேட்டைக்கு வந்தது நினைவில்லையா?
நினைவில்லையா? – இங்கு
வேறொரு புள்ளிமான் கிடைக்கல்லையா?
கிடைக்கல்லையா?
காட்டுக்குள்ளே இந்த நாடகமா?
காதலென்றால் இந்த அவசரமா? அவசரமா?”

என்றே எழுந்து வரும் வரிகளும்:

ஆண்: “குளிர்ந்த காற்றாய் மாறட்டுமா? மாறட்டுமா – உன்
கூந்தலில் நடனம் ஆடட்டுமா? ஆடட்டுமா!
கொல்லும் கண்களை வெல்லட்டுமா?
கோடிக்கதைகள் சொல்லட்டுமா?”

இப்படித் தொடர்ந்து கவிஞர் தொடுத்த கவிதை வரிகளும், டி.எம்.எஸ். பி. சுசீலாவின் இனிய குரல்களில் இனிமையில், மக்கள் திலகம் எம்.ஜி.ஆர், நடியையர் திலகம் சாவித்திரியின் பொருத்தமான நடிப்பில், காதல் பூகம்பத்தையே எழுப்பிப் புதிய வரலாற்றையே படைத்தது எனலாம்.

சரி வெறும் காதலை மட்டுமா சொல்லுவார் எம்.ஜி.ஆர்? சமுதாயத்திற்குச் சொல்லவேண்டிய சமாச்சாரங்களையும் சொல்லுவாரே! பின் என்ன சொல்லாமலா விடுவார்?

அதற்கும் கண்ணதாசனின், எண்ணக் கருத்துகள் எழுந்து வரும் விதம் காணீர்!

“வெள்ளிநிலா முற்றத்திலே
விளக்கெரிய விளக்கெரிய
உள்ள மென்னும் தாமரையில்
உனையெடுத்துக் கொண்டு வந்தேன்!”

பாடலின் ஆரம்பத்தைப் பார்த்தீர்கள்!

வேட்டைக்காரன் பாபு, தன் காதல் தலைவியை, வாழ்க்கைத் துணைவியாக்கி, அதன் வரப்பிராதமாக வந்த மகன் ராஜாவை அன்புடன் அணைத்து வளர்க்கிறார்.

காரணம், வாழ்க்கைத் துணைவயான காதல் தலைவி, காசநோயின் தாக்குதலில் தத்தளிக்கிறாள். எனவேதான் பிள்ளைக்குத் தந்தையான பாபுவே, தாயின் அன்பையும் சேர்த்து ஊட்டும் கடமையின் சொந்தக்காரராகிறார்.

உள்ளமெனும் தாமரையில் கொண்டு வந்த மகனுக்கு உணவூட்டிக் கொண்டே, நல்லுணர்வுகளை ஊட்டிட, நன்னெறிகள் வளர்ந்திட வாழ்த்தியே பாபு பாடுகிறார்.

வாழ்த்துவதைப் பாருங்களேன்!

வேலெடுக்கும் மரபிலே
வீரம் செறிந்த மண்ணிலே
பால் குடிக்க வந்தவனே
நடையைக் காட்டு! – வரும்
பகைவர்களை வென்றுவிடும்
படையைக் காட்டு!”

பார்த்தீர்களா?

பால் குடிக்க வந்தவன்… எங்கே இருந்து….? வீரம் செறிந்த மண்ணில் இருந்து! எந்த மரபில் இருந்து? வெற்றிவேல் எடுக்கும் மரபில் இருந்து!

அப்படியானால் அவன் எப்படி இருக்கவேண்டும்?

வெற்றி நடையைக் காட்டவேண்டும்! பகைவர்களை வென்றுவிடும் படைபலத்தையும் காட்டவேண்டும்!

சரிதானே! இவை போதுமா?

“முக்கனியின் சாறெடுத்து
முத்தமிழின் தேனெடுத்து
முப்பாலிலே கலந்து எப்போதும்
சுவைத்திருப்பாய்!”

எப்படியாம்?

உடல் உரம் பெற்றிட முக்கனிச் சாறெடுத்து உண்ண வேண்டும்!

சிந்தையைத் தெளிவாக்க, செவிக்உக உணவான, முத்தமிழாம் தேனை, வள்ளுவர் தந்த முப்பாலிலே கலந்து, எப்போதுமே சுவைத்திருக்க வேண்டுமாம்!

அப்போதுதானே தமிழரின் பண்பாட்டோடு, தமிழரின் வீரமும் தழைத்து வளரும்.

இவையும் போதா? இன்னும்……

“நான்கு பேர்கள் போற்றவும்
நாடு உன்னை வாழ்த்தவும்
மானத்தோடு வாழ்வதுதான்
சுயமரியாதை! – நல்ல
மனமுடையோர் காண்பதுதான்
தனி மரியாதை!….”

ஆமாம்! நல்லோர், நான்கு திசையிலுள்ளோர் போற்ற வேண்டும்! நாடு உன்னை வாழ்த்தவேண்டும்! ‘மயிர் நீப்பின் வாழாக் கவரிமான் போல்’ மானத்தோடு வாழ்வதே சுய மரியாதையாகும்.

அத்தகு நல்மானம் கொண்டோர்தான், அவர்கள் காண்பதுதான் சுயமரியாதையாகும்.

இப்படியெல்லாம் மகனுக்கு வீர உணர்வூட்டித் தன்மானத்தோடு வாழ்ந்திட வழி சொல்லும் தந்தை பாபுவாக எம்.ஜி.ஆரும்; மகன் ராஜாவாக அன்றைய பெயர் பெற்ற குழந்தை நட்சத்திரம் பேபி ஷகிலாவும் தோன்றி நடிக்கும் காட்சியைக் கண்டு மகிழாமல் இருந்திட இயலுமா?

படத்தின் உசகட்டப் பாடலோ, சாக்ரடீஸின் தத்துவத்தை மூலமந்திரமாக்கிக் கவிஞரின் கவிதைக் கருவில் தோன்றிய உயர் பாடலே;

“உன்னையறிந்தால் – நீ உன்னையறிந்தால்
உலகத்தில் போராடலாம்!
உயர்ந்தாலும் தாழ்ந்தாலும் – தலை ‘
வணங்காமல் நீ வாழலாம்!”

என்று ஆரம்பமாகும் பாடலமாகும்.

மற்றவரைப் பற்றி உனக்கென்ன மனக்கவலை! ‘உன்னையே நீ அறிவாய்!’ என்று கிரேக்கஞானி சாக்ரடீஸ் சொன்னாரே; அவர் சொன்ன மொழியை ஏற்று முதலில் நீ உன்னை அறியக் கற்றுக்கொள்! உன்னை நீ அறிந்துகொண்டால், நீ உலகத்தில் எழுந்து நின்று போராடலாம்.

அப்போதுதான் உன் வாழ்க்கையில் உயர்வு வந்தாலும், தாழ்வு வந்தாலும் பிறர்க்குத் தலை வணங்காமல் நீ வாழ்ந்திடலாம். என்கிறார். யார்? எம்.ஜி.ஆர்.

“மானம் பெரியதென்று வாழும் மனிதர்களை
மானென்று சொல்வதில்லையா?…தன்னைத்
தானும் அறிந்துகொண்டு
ஊருக்கும் சொல்பவர்கள்
தலைவர்கள் ஆவதில்லையா?…ஓ….ஓ…ஓ…”

‘இங்கும், மானமே பிரதானமாகச் சொல்லப்படுகிறது.

மானமே பெரியதென்று வாழும் மனிதர்களே, கவரிமான் இனத்தைச் சார்ந்தவர்கள் என்று சொல்லப்படுவார்கள்!

மானத்தொடு, நல்லது கெட்டதை அறிந்துகொண்டு, அறிந்ததை ஊருக்குள் சொல்பவர்களே தலைவர்களாவார்கள்!’

அரிய கருத்துக்களே! அனைவரும் அறிந்துகொள்ள வேண்டிய கருத்துகளே!

இன்னும் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். வாயிலாகச் சொல்லப்படுவன என்ன? இதோ!….

“பூமியில் நேராக வாழ்பவர் எல்லோரும்
சாமிக்கு நிகரில்லையா?…பிறர்
தேவையறிந்து கொண்டு வாரிக் கொடுப்பவர்கள்
தெய்வத்தின் பிள்ளையில்லையா?….ஓ….ஓ….ஓ…”

என்னே அருமை!

பூமியல் சாமிக்கு நிகரானவர் யாராம்? நேர்மையாக வாழ்கின்றவர் எல்லோருமே சாமிக்கு நிகரானவரேயாம்! அது மட்டுமா?

பிறரது தேவைகளை அறிந்துகொண்டு, தன்னிடம் உள்ள செல்வத்தை வாரி வாரிக் கொடுப்பவர்களே தெய்வத்தின் பிள்ளைகளாம்!

(அந்த வகையில் வாரி வாரிக் கொடுத்த வள்ளலாம் எம்.ஜி.ஆரும் தெய்வத்தின் பிள்ளைதானே! கண்ணதாசன் பார்வையில் எம்.ஜி.ஆர் அவ்வாறு தோன்றிய விதத்தால்தானே பாடலும் இவ்வாறு பிறந்தது.)

அடுத்து என்ன? அடுத்து வரும் பாடல் வரிகள்தான்….. எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் வாழ்க்கைக்கே இலக்கணமான இலக்கிய வரிகள்…..

“மாபெரும் சபைகளில் நீ நடந்தால் – உனக்கு
மாலைகள் விழவேண்டும்! – ஒரு
மாற்றுக் குறையாத மன்னவன் இவனென்று
போற்றிப் புகழவேண்டும்!….ஓ….ஓ….ஓ….”

அடேயப்பா!

‘மாபெரும் சபைகளுக்குள் நீ நடந்து வந்தாலே, உன் மகிமையறிந்து மாலைகள் வந்து விழவேண்டும்! ஒரு குறையும் சொல்ல முடியாத, மாற்றுக் குறையாத பொன்னான மன்னவன் இவனென்றே, இந்த உலகம் உன்னைப் போற்றிப் புகழவேண்டுமாம்!’

இவையெல்லாம் மன்னாதி மன்னன் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். வாழ்க்கையில் நடந்தவையல்லவா? நாம் கண்டவையல்லவா? இவற்றைத் தானே கவியரசர் கண்ணதாசன் அன்றே சொன்னார்! அவர் சொன்ன வாக்கு இவ்வையகத்தில் வாழ்ந்த எம்.ஜி.ஆர். வாழ்க்கையில் பலித்தவைதானே!

எத்தனையோ பாடல்கள்…. கவிஞரின் கருத்துகளில் இருந்து உருவாகியிருந்தாலும்; எவர் எவர்க்கோ அவர் எழுதியிருந்தாலும், எம்.ஜி.ஆருக்குப் பொருந்திய விதங்களே வியத்தகு சிறப்புக்கு உரியன எனில் மிகையாகா.

இவற்றிற்கெல்லாம் ஏதேனும் அடிப்படைக் காரணங்கள் இருக்குமா? இருக்கலாம் என்றே தோன்றுகிறது. அவற்றைக் கண்ணதாசனே சொல்லக் கேட்போமே! வாருங்கள்!

ஜெயந்தி பிலிம்ஸ் தயாரித்து, ப. நீலகண்டன் இயக்கத்தில், கே.வி. மகாதேவன் இசையில், கண்ணதாசன் பாடல்களோடு, எம்.ஜி.ஆர். இரட்டை வேடங்களில், ஜெயலலிதா, லட்சுமி ஆகிய இருவரோடு நடித்த ‘மாட்டுக்கார வேலன்’ 14.1.1970 அன்று, தமிழர் திருநாளில் வெளியானது.

சென்னையில் ‘மாட்டுக்கார வேலன்’ திரையிடப்பட்ட பிளாசா, பிராட்வே, சயானி, கிருஷ்ணவேணி ஆகிய நான்கு திரையரங்குகளிலும், தொடர்ந்து தினமும் மூன்று காட்சிகளுக்குக் குறையாமல் நூறு நாள்கள் ஓடி சாதனைச் சரித்திரம் படைத்தது.

இத்தகு சாதனைக்குரிய படத்தில், நம் சாதனைக் கவிஞர் கண்ணதாசன் எழுதிய அனைத்துப் பாடல்களுமே பரபரப்பான வரவேற்பினைப் பெற்றன.

டி.எம்.எஸ். குரல் கொடுத்து, எம்.ஜி.ஆர் நடித்த பாடல் காட்சிக்காகக் கவிஞர் தந்த பாடல்… ஒன்று… இதோ!….

“ஒரு பக்கம் பாக்குறா!
ஒரு கண்ணெ சாய்க்குறா! – அவ
உதட்டை கடிச்சுக்கிட்டு – மெதுவா
சிரிக்கிறா சிரிக்கிறா சிரிக்கிறா!….”

பாடலின் தொடக்கம் கண்டீர்!

நாற்பது வயதை எட்டி நிற்கும் பலருக்கும் பாடல் முழுமையும் நினைவுக்கு வரலாம்… இல்லையெனில் பாடல் காட்சியாவது நினைவுக்கு நிச்சயம் வரலாம்?

அடுத்து…
“தொட்டுக் கொள்ளவா… நெஞ்சில்
தொடுத்துக் கொள்ளவா!
பட்டுக் கொள்ளவா…மெல்லப்
பழகிக் கொள்ளவா!”

என்று தொடங்கி…..

“தங்கத்தினால் கலசம் வைத்த கோபுரம்
நடை தவழும்போது குலுங்கும் இசை ஆயிரம்”

என்றே வளரும் இனிய பாடலையும் கவியரசர் படைத்திட்டார்.

சத்தியம் நீயே! தர்மத்தாயே!
‘கோமாதா எங்கள் குலமாதா’, எனப் பால் கொடுக்கும் பசுவின் பெருமையைப் பாடிப் புகழ்ந்தவரே கண்ணதாசன்.

அவர்தான் மாட்டுக்கார வேலன் மகிழந்து, பசுவைப் புகழ்ந்து பாடுவதற்காக அருமையான பாடலொன்றை ஆக்கித் தந்தார்.
அப்பாடல்தான்,

“சத்தியம் நீயே! தர்மத்தாயே!
குழந்தை வடிவே! தெய்வ மகளே!
குங்குமக் கலையோடு குலங்காக்கும் பெண்ணை
குணத்தில் பசுவென்று சொல்வார்கள் கண்ணே!
காலையில் உன் முகம் பார்த்த பின்னே
கடமை செய்வாள் எங்கள் தமிழ்நாட்டுப்
பெண்ணே!”

இப்படித் தொடங்கும் பாடல்.

இப்பாடல் காட்சியில் ஆரவாரத்துடன் மக்கள் திலகம் எம்.ஜி.ஆர் தோன்றிடும்போது, திரையரங்குகளில் எழுந்த கரவொலி ஒசைகள், ஆர்ப்பாட்ட ஆனந்தக் காட்சிகள் அப்பப்பா….! அந்தக் காலகட்டங்கள்…. இனி திரையுலகில் திரும்புமா?

இப்பாடல் முழுவதுமே கருத்துகளை அள்ளி அள்ளித் தரும் அழகோ, தனி அழகுதான்! கேளுங்களேன்!

“பால் கொடுப்பாய்! அது தாயாரைக் காட்டும்!
பாசம் வைப்பாய்! அது சேயாகத் தோன்றும்!
அம்மாவை அம்மா என்றழைக்கின்ற சொல்லும்
அன்பான தமிழுக்கு நீ தந்ததன்றோ!…..”

கேட்டீர்களா?

என்னே விநோதம்!
‘அன்பான தமிழாம்….

அதற்கு ‘அம்மா!’ என்றழைக்கின்ற சொல்லைத் தந்ததே பால் கொடுக்கும் பாசமுள்ள பசுவாம்!’

இன்னும் பெருக்கெடுத்து வரும் இனிய வரிகளைத்தான் வாசிப்போமே….!

“வளர்த்தவரே உன்னை மறந்துவிட்டாலும்,
அடுத்தவரிடத்தில் கொடுத்துவிட்டாலும்,
வளர்ந்த இடத்தை நீ மறக்காத செல்வம்!
வாய் மட்டும் இருந்தால் மொழிபேசும் தெய்வம்”

வாசித்தோம்….!

யோசிப்போம்!

‘நன்றி மறவாத, பேசும் வாய் இல்லாத செல்வம்… அந்தப் பசுவிற்குப் பேசும் வாய் இருந்தால்… அதுவே மொழிபேசும் தெய்வமாம்!’

‘கண்ணதாசா! கருத்துக் கவிக்கடலே! உன்னை எப்படியப்பா தன் எண்ணத்திலிருந்து எம்.ஜி.ஆரால் அகற்ற முடியும்?’ என்றல்லவா இக்கவிஞர், இன்றிருந்தால் நாமும் கேள்விதனைக் கேட்போம்! அப்படித்தானே!

பாடலின் முடிந்த முடிவு!….

“தன்னையே கொடுப்பதில் வாழைக்கு ஈடு
சம்சாரி வாழ்வுக்கு ஒரு பசு மாடு
பொன்னையே தந்தாலும் உனக்கேது ஈடு
பூப்போல வைத்துன்னைக் காப்பதென் பாடு!”

சரிதானே!

‘நார், இலை, பூ, தண்டு, பழம் என அனைத்தையும் கொடுக்கும் வாழைக்கு ஈடே பசு…. குடும்ப வாழ்க்கை நடத்தும் சம்சாரிக்கு ஒரு பசுவே போதும். பொன்னையே கொட்டிக் கொடுத்தாலும் அந்தப் பசுவுக்கு ஈடாகாது. எனவே அப்பசுவைப் பூப்போல வைத்துக் காப்பதே எனது பாடாகிய உழைப்பின் உயர்வாகும் என்று மாட்டுக்கார வேலனாய் நின்று எம்.ஜி.ஆர். சொல்லும் தத்துவம், என்றைக்கும் எல்லோரும் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளும் தத்துவந்தானே’.

இந்தத் தத்துவத்தைப் படத்தில் கூறி நின்ற எம்.ஜி.ஆரும்; பாடலில் தந்த கண்ணதாசனும் என்றும் தமிழகத்தின் தத்துவ நாயகர்களே எனில் தவறாகா.

இப்படத்தின் பாடல்களைப் பாடிய டி.எம். சௌந்தரராஜனும், பி. சுசீலாவும், ஒலித்த அவர்களின் குரல்க்ள மூலம் நம் இதயங்களில் என்றும் நிலைத்திருப்பார்கள் என்பதும் நிஜமே.

சாளுக்கிய இளவரசி மதுரைக்கு வருகிறார். அவரை வரவேற்பதற்காக வெடிகளுடன் கூடிய வரவேற்பு நிகழ்ச்சி ஏற்பாடு செய்யப் படுகிறது. வழக்கம்போல் வெடிகள் வெடித்த உடன் இளவரசி அமர்ந்திருக்கும் யானை மிரண்டு ஓடுகிறது.

அப்போது புலவர் பைந்தமிழ்குமரன் யானைமேல் ஏறி யானையை கட்டுப் படுத்தி சாளுக்கிய இளவரசியைக் காப்பாற்றுகிறார்.

ஏற்கனவே புலவரின் புரட்சிகரப் பாடல்களைப் பற்றிக் கேள்விப் பட்டிருக்கும் சாளுக்கியப் பைங்கிளி புலவரை அரசவையில் கவுரவிக்க எண்ணுகிறார். அப்போதைய டம்மி பாண்டிய அரச்வைக்கு அவர் வரவழைக்கப் படுகிறார்.

அங்கு பாண்டியர்களை தூற்றி சோழர்களுக்குப் பட்டங்கள் வழங்கப் படுகின்றன. பாண்டியர்களைத் தூற்றுப் போதெல்லாம் புலவர் பைந்தமிழ் குமரனும் அவரது மாணவனும் கொதித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கின்றனர்.

புலவருக்கு கவுரம் அளிப்பதற்காக மாலை அணிவிக்க இளவரசர் ராஜராஜர் வருகிறார். மாலை அணிவிக்கும்போது சற்று குத்தலாக பேசி அவரைப் பாடச் சொல்கிறார். பாடலுக்கு பிறகு மாலை அணிவிக்கப் போவதாகச் சொல்லிவிடுகிறார்.

தனதுபாடல் ஏழை மக்களுக்கானது என்றும் அதில் சோகச்சுவைத்தான் மேலோங்கி நிற்கும் என்று கூறி புலவர் பைந்தமிழ் குமரன் மறுக்கிறார். சொற்சுவை, பொருட்சுவை நிறம்பிய தமிழ்ப்பா எந்தச் சுவையில் இருந்தாலும் ரசித்து இன்புற முடியும் என்று விருந்தினர்களான சாளுக்கிய அரசரும் இள்வரசியும் சொல்ல தனது பாணியிலான பாடலைப் பாட அவர் ஒத்துக் கொண்டு பாடல் படுகிறார்.

அவர் பாடும் திரைப்பாடல்:-

தாயகத்தின் சுதந்திரமே எங்கள் கொள்கை
தன்மானம் ஒன்றேதான் எங்கள் செல்வம்

தன்மானம் ஒன்றேதான் எங்கள் செல்வம்

கோட்டையிலே நமது கொடி பறந்திட வேண்டும்
கொள்கை வீரர் தியாகங்களை ஏற்றிட வேண்டும்

புரட்சியிலே சரித்திரத்தை மாற்றிட வேண்டும்
பொதுவுடமை சமுதாயம் மலர்ந்திட வேண்டும்

கண் கவரும் கலைகள் எல்லாம் வளர்ந்தது இங்கே
களங்கமுள்ள பகைவராலே தாழ்ந்தது இங்கே

நீதியோடு நேர்மை காக்கும் மறவர்கள் இங்கே
நிமிர்ந்தெழுந்தால் தாடகை எல்லாம் உடைந்திடும் இங்கே

வீரமுண்டு வெற்றி உண்டு
விளையாடும் களமிங்கே உண்டு
வா வா என் தோழா

இந்தப் பாடல் பாடப் படும்போது இளவரசர் ராஜராஜரும் அரசப் பிரதிநிதி ஜயங்கொண்ட மாறவர்மரும் மேலும் மேலும் கோபப் படுகிறார்கள். இருந்தாலும் சாளுக்கிய விருந்தினர்கள் முன்னிலையில் என்பதால் முழுப் பாடலையும் அனுமதிக்கின்றனர்.

பாடல் முடிவடைந்ததும் பாடலை மெச்சி சாளுக்கிய இளவரசியே புலவருக்கு மாலை அணிவிக்கப் போகிறார். புலவர் அதைக் கையில் பெற்றுக் கொள்கிறார்.

I will try to update some Book reviews on our Beloved MGR.

First book for makkal thilagam thread is MGR The Man and the Myth.

More than thousand authors have written about MGR, mostly in Tamil and seldom in English. Recently (handed over to me a year back) I read a book which was given to me by my friend Pastor Senthil Kumar an English book about MGR titled MGR The Man and The Myth, 1995 Edition. I have read the Tamil version of this book during my College years (titled MGR Nijamum Nizhalum).

The book was authored by DGP Mohandas a.k.a. MGR’s eyes and ears, a trouble shooter and bogey man, this book some what gives the ring side view of MGR’s rule. He had first met MGR in 1969 when he was Superintendent of Police for Madurai region during the shooting of Mattukkara Velan and then after some years he was serving CBI in New Delhi he returned back during the hearing of Sarkaria Commission in 1976. From then on till MGR’s death he was beside MGR and he knows how well MGR administered Tamil Nadu.
Many authors have said from their respective point of view, DGP Mohandas book about MGR is a point of view from the Police side, how MGR played his part, how secretive and how he kept his cards close to his chest. To make clear what I say is that many writers when they write about MGR were already turned Devotee in some way or other and MGR have helped in their problem or got any financial or support from him, but Mohandas point of view is not a Devotee point of view, and entirely differs from other writers.
Lot of interesting incidents have been written in the book, how MGR tackled some different situation with absolute ease even his educational level is basic. Mohandas accepts that he is not able to judge MGR correctly every time. He also says that MGR’s face does not show any reaction even the matter was serious one. Whenever MGR has to take a decision he will close his eyes and be in a trance state.
The cover of the book with ADMK colour background and an Enigmatic smile of MGR is the best choosen image for the book. He always says that MGR smile is bewitching.
MGR often referred to him as Namma DIG to his security men and his household. A different book makes us feel that still MGR is Enigma.Some of the interesting lines from the Book.

1980 Return of MGR in General Elections

The real MGR, with all his charisma, surfaced, and the people – especially in the rural areas – pledged him their solid support. As in his films, he was at his best when fighting a battle – with or without swords – with his back to the wall. The Congress (I) – DMK alliance, born after much difficulty and reluctance, was no match for the swashbuckling one-man Army of MGR. And he came out vanquishing his rivals, with his party securing a majority higher that the one it had before its dismissal. as the magazine Link put it: With a massive popular mandate, demoralised opposition, devoutly loyal party and close-knit ministry, MGR should surely be the envy of many a Chief Minister in the country.

MGR a Great Showman:

I would like to cite one or two examples to illustrate how the showman in him projected me as his ‘bogeyman’. One evening I got a summons from him (over the hot-line) asking me to meet him immediately in the Secretariat. When I entered his chamber, I was surprised to find him discussing some cinema film with three of his Cabinet Ministers. He signaled to me to sit by his side, and the mirthful conversation went on for a few minutes. Suddenly he got up with seriousness writ all over his face and asked me, Shall we go? I was puzzled but nodded assent. He walked straight to his car, accompanied by me, but ignoring all the sycophantic farewells of his Cabinet colleagues. As the car drove away MGR started humming a Carnatic tune. I gently reminded him about his urgent summons and enquired what it was all about. He had a hearty laugh and said that it was only a drama. He suspected one of the three Ministers of being involved in some corrupt deals and he (MGR) wanted to frighten him. The Minister, MGR continued, would ponder what the grave matter involving me (with my walrus moustache) was, he would have a sleepless night, (so went the argument), and would think twice before transacting any more of his corrupt deals. MGR slapped me on the back and said, Well done, keep it up. I could do nothing but stare at him. He dropped me at my office – which was another strange display of showmanship ostensibly to impress my staff and others in the building (of my closeness to him) with his pilot and escort cars zooming past. I was left standing, a trifle dazed. When I reached my chambers, my private secretary informed me that there were calls from all the 3 Ministers. I asked him to put them through – and MGR was right! All of them nervously enquired of me as to what was going on. I assured them that MGR was only discussing with me some matter relating to New Delhi. They were surely not convinced but could do nothing about it.

Naxalite problem:

Naxalite (Communist Party – Marxist – Leninist) activities reached their peak in pockets of North Arcot and Dharmapuri districts in the mid 80′s. While an Inspector of police and two constables were escorting a known extremist in a jeep to Tiruppathur police station, the latter exploded a powerful bomb hidden in his loins killing all of them and destroying the jeep beyond recognition. MGR was quick to react, rushed to Vellore, accompanied by DGP, T.T.P.Abdulla and participated in the funeral of the slain police personnel. He gave a funeral oration which was soul-stirring. He promised to eradicate the naxalite menace in the area within a month. He gave encouragement to the police and local population. He put me in charge of master-minding “Operation Naxalite” with the then DIG (Vellore) Walter Devaram being put in charge of field operations. He finished the job in 20 days and there has been no naxalite activity in the area ever since…A comparison with the present situation in Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Bihar and Maharashtra (to name a few) where naxalites are whipping up riots and indulging in not only terrorist activity but also kidnapping high civil officials for ransom would justify the police action in Tamil Nadu in 1980 and the foresight of MGR in accurately analysing the shape of things to come, if such activities were not nipped in the bud.

Final part of MGR The Man and The Myth

As written by Mohandas that he was the person who suggested for video coverage of MGR in the Brooklyn Hospital. There are lot of incidents in the book and the last words about MGR by Mohandas is “In the death he looked peaceful. To me he was one of the few Winners in Life. He looked a Winner even in Death. He had nothing more to look forward to, with a life full of achievements – whether it was in film world where he reigned supreme for a record number of year or whether it was in the political field where he captured power within five years of forming his own party. His election in absentia (while convalescing in Brooklyn Hospital) and his party sweeping the polls were indeed incredible.The Tamil Nadu massess gave him abundant love, affection, respect and the status of a Demi-God. To them, whatever he did was right and his word was law, till the end…
When he first won the elections and assumed power as Chief Minister, he pad a visit to New Delhi, where seasoned Politicians like A.B.Vajpayee stared at him in wonder. Even the usually stern Moraji Desai, politically crafted Indira Gandhi and the sophisticated Rajiv Gandhi had a soft corner for him and were always pleased to meet him as a person, though not necessarily as a politician. If MGR’s charisma could work on such eminent personalities, one can easily estimate and understand how the MGR magic worked on the masses of Tamil Nadu – whatever be the opinion of armchair politicians and the intelligentsia…MGR, the myth was very much a part of MGR the man. Future historians will find in him a fascinating subject. As for the present, nearly five years after his death (1992) the MGR cult persists and his soul hovers over the huts of lakhs of his fans. They worship him by installing his statues in wayside temples, and old MGR movies still run to packed houses.

Aazhi Publishers have released a new 264 pages Book on our beloved Leader MGR. The book titled MGR Paettigal (எம்.ஜி.ஆர். பேட்டிகள்) complied by S.Kirubakaran.

First of all I thank him for his dedicated and painstaking work he had done to bring some of MGR’s interviews given in various Newspapers and magazine and in various period. All MGR fans should have this book in their collection. The cost of the book is Rs.130/- can be ordered by email or website.

The interview starts with Jayalalithaa interviewing MGR for Bommai magazine in 1968, the very first question,

எம்.ஜி.ஆர். பதில் – நான் விரும்புவதை என் தொழிலில் செய்து கட்டவேண்டும் என்பது எனது நீங்காத ஆசையாகும். ஒரு வேளை என் விருப்பம் தவறாகவும் இருந்து விடலாம். என்னுடைய ஆசையை நிறைவேற்ற வேண்டும் என்பதற்காக பிறருடைய பணத்தை வைத்து சோதனையில் இறங்க நான் தயாராக இல்லை. நான் சொந்ததில் படம் எடுக்க இதுதான் காரணம்.

When the questions turned to Political side MGR answers that he joined DMK in 1952 because Aringnar Anna’s party DMK had the qualities of Gandhian principles and goes behind who was the person made arrangements to meet Annadurai, Navalar Nedunchezhian and N.V.Natarajan was T.V.Narayanasamy.

MGR was a great Action Hero he was undefeated in this department some called him as Attai Kaithi veeran who cannot digest that he was supreme in Action movies here is the answer to that question which appeared in Nadigan Kural in 1961.
……… குறை கூறுபவர்கள் வேண்டுமென்றே சொல்கின்றனர், அறியாத்தனத்தால் அல்ல, தாங்கள் சொல்வது சரியல்ல என்பது அவர்களுக்கே தெரியும். ஆகவேதான் இது போன்ற பல்வேறு கேள்விகளுக்கு நான் பதில் சொல்லாமல் விட்டுவிடுவது வழக்கம்.

சினிமாவில் எனக்கு இதுவரை அட்டைக் கத்தியை வைத்துச் சண்டை செய்து பழக்கமில்லை. அநேகமாக எனக்குத் தெரிந்த பலரும் அட்டைக் கத்தியை உபயோகப்படுத்தியதில்லை. மரக்கத்தி உண்டு. ஆங்கில படங்களில் பார்த்திருக்கிறேன். சினிமாவில் சண்டைக் காட்சிகளுக்கென அட்டைக் கத்தி இதுவரை உற்பத்தி செய்யப்பட்டதாகவோ, இறக்குமதி செய்யப்பட்டதாகவோ நான் கேள்விப்பட்டதில்லை. பெரிய கவிஞரை சம்பந்தப்படுத்திய கேள்வி என்பதானால் ஓரளவு விளக்கம் கூற முனைந்தேன். இப்பொழுது புரிந்து கொண்டிருப்பீர் என்று நினைக்கிறேன்.

The question about which film he liked in his 100 odd movies he mentions that Petral than Pillaiya and En Thangai as his favourite movie. And another question about Raj Kapoor movie Sangam is given below we can understand how MGR has planned his career and why his acting and approach is different from others.

கேள்வி – நடிப்பு கருவூலம் ராஜ்கபூர் நடித்த சங்கம் படம் போல் சிறந்த நடிப்பு, சிறந்த இயக்கம் சிறந்த பாடல்கள் அமைந்த ஒரு படத்தை தமிழ்நாட்டு மக்களுக்கு அளிப்பீர்களா?

எம்.ஜி.ஆர். பதில் – அவருடைய பெயர் ராஜ்கபூர், என்னுடைய பெயர் எம்.ஜி.ராமச்சந்திரன். ஒருவரைப் போல் இன்னொருவர் ஆக முடியாது. கூடாது. ஒவ்வொருக்கும தனக்கென்று ஒரு பாணி, தனக்கென்று ஒரு பாதை இருந்தே ஆக வேண்டும்.

Most of the questions of those from 1960 to 1970 belong to movies and his personal likings but after 1972 the questions were mostly about ADMK, his principles, his future after elections etc.

Below is the excerpt from his interview given in New Delhi after visiting the President of India on November 1972.

கேள்வி – நீங்கள் மந்திரி பதவிக்கு ஆசைப்பட்டீர்களா?

எம்.ஜி.ஆர். பதில் – அது நான் விரும்பாத பதவி. நான் விரும்பி இருந்தால், அண்ணா காலத்திலேயே மந்திரி ஆகி இருப்பேன். மந்திரி பதவியை நான் ஏற்க மறுத்ததால்தான், மந்திரி பதவிக்குரிய அந்தஸ்து கொண்ட சிறுசேமிப்பு துணைத் தலைவர் பதவியை எனக்கு கொடுத்தார்.

கேள்வி – உங்களுக்கு சேரும் கூட்டமெல்லாம் நீங்கள் பிரபல சினிமா நடிகர் என்பதால் இருக்கலாம அல்லவா?

எம்.ஜி.ஆர். பதில் – நான் நடிகன், ஆனால் என்னைப்போல எத்தனையோ நடிகர்கள் உள்ளனர். இவர்கள் எல்லாம் என் போலவே இயக்கம் ஆரம்பித்தால் ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் இப்படிக் கூட்டம் சேரும் என்று சொல்ல முடியுமா?

When some delicate questions arise see how MGR tackles them and how deep he thinks before answering such questions it may be his own image, his party or his foes he was careful in handling and when we read that we feel he was a decent politician like his Mentor.


கேள்வி – 12.1.1973 அன்று வேலுரில் நடைபெற்ற காங்கிரஸ் பொதுக்கூட்டத்தில் சிவாஜி கணேசன், அண்ணா தி.மு.க.வைச் சாக்கடை என்று ஏளனமாகப் பேசினார். அவருக்கு தாங்கள் கூறும் பதில் என்ன?

எம்.ஜி.ஆர். பதில் – நான் படித்த ஏடுகளில் அப்படிப் பேசியதாக எந்தச் செய்தியும் தெரியவில்லை.

கேள்வி – பிலிமாலயா பத்திரிகையில் சந்திரபாபு எழுதும் கதைக்குத் நீங்கள் ஏன் மறுப்புத் தெரிவிக்கவில்லை?

எம்.ஜி.ஆர். பதில் – கதைக்குப் போய் யாராவது மறுப்பு தெரிவிப்பார்களா.

கேள்வி – தங்களுக்கு அரசியல் தெரியாது என்று தமிழ்வாணனும் சிவாஜி கணேசனும் சொல்லி இருக்கிறார்கள். உங்கள் கருத்து என்ன?

எம்.ஜி.ஆர். பதில் – கற்றது கை மண் அளவு கல்லாதது உலகளவு என்னைப் பொறுத்தவரையில் இது பொருந்தும் இதை நான் ஏற்றுக் கொள்கிறேன்.

கேள்வி – உங்களது கட்சி நாளிதழில் சிவாஜி கணேசனைப் பற்றிய செய்திகள் வெளியிடப்படுகின்றனவே?

எம்.ஜி.ஆர் பதில் – சிவாஜி கணேசன் எதிர்கட்சியிலிருந்து கொண்டு அண்ணாவின் தி.மு.கழகத்தை எதிர்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்த நேரத்தில் அமரர் அண்ணா அவர்கள் ஒரு நாள் சிவாஜி கணேசன் அவர்களின் நாடகத்திற்கு தலைமை தாங்கிப் பாராட்டியதை மறந்துவிட்டீர்களா?

எங்கிருந்தாலும் வாழ்க என்று அண்ணா வாழ்த்தவில்லையா? அவருடைய தம்பிகளான நாங்கள் அவரைப் பின்பற்றி நமது கடமையை நாம் செய்வோம். (அண்ணா நாளிதழ் 10.11.1976)

In 1977 elections MGR’s ADMK Party won and MGR became the Chief Minister. All MGR Fans know who will become Chief Minister when MGR started his own party in 1972, but MGR did not say a word about instead how he answers that question is given below.

கேள்வி – புரட்சித் தலைவர் அவர்களே 1976-க்கு பிறகு தாங்கள் ஆட்சிக்கு வந்தால் அரசியலில் முழு மூச்சாக ஈடுபடுவீர்களா? அல்லது கலைத்துறையில் இருந்து பணியாற்றுவீர்களா?

எம்.ஜி.ஆர். பதில் – உங்கள் தீர்ப்பும் சட்டத்தின் தீர்ப்பும் என்ன கட்டளை இடுகிறதோ அப்படி நடப்பேன்.

In all the questions in the Book we can feel that MGR was humble and used simple words to make us understand. There are lot of interesting questions but it is well enjoyed when we read it. i was very impressed after reading the interviews and the answers delivered by our vaathiyar MGR is amazing its total technicaly answered where there was no room for the interviewer to ask again.
I remember one interview that i watch on TV sometime in 70′s when he came to Singapore ,Malaysia and Thailand for the shooting of Ulagam Sutrum Valiban.The interview was conduct by a Malaysian journalist in Bangkok Hotel Dusil Thani.that was the first time i saw MGR without makeup.I was very impressed with his reply and the journalist give up to MGR by he donot know what question to ask MGR because of the reply was coming out so fast and sharp from MGR.May be all this TV interviews still with MGR’s grandsonWhat a great man he was really we all miss him.At that time i was about 16 years old and i try to see him ,but no one help me .
But i still remember some of his dialogues like :Asokan say ,nee paambuputukule kaiyai udare ,then MGR reply naan paambuputukule kaiyai vidaratu athode visapalle pidingaratuku,oh what daring dialogue,i think the movie was Mattukara Velan correct me if i’m wrong.
Movie Nam Naadu i watch may be 20times because of songs and acting of our MGR.Not only this ,there many movies like this.CAn someone help me to get the latest MGR book.

Jewel of the Masses, English book written by Roopa Swaminathan.

From a very modest beginning, MGR scaled the heights of popularity in Tamil Films and politics. With several mega hits under his belt, MGR’s popularity shifted over from reel to real when he became the darling of millions – as a politician, who empathised with the common man.

Having begun his political career as a member of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) he established the Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (ADMK) in 1972 and was elected the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu consecutively for a record three terms. Most of MGR fans have liked the helping nature of MGR and referred this as Quality of God. That is why MGR is termed as Icon of Humanity.

The movies such as Nadodi Mannan, Ayirathil Oruvan, Ulagam Sutrum Valiban, En Thangai, Pasam, Petral Than Pillaiya, Enga Veetu Pillai, Nam Nadu, Nalai Namathey, Pallandu Vazhga, Olivilaku, Padagoti, Kudieruntha Kovil, Alibabavum Narpathu Thirudargalum, Asai Mugam, Nallavan Vazhvan, Ragasiya Police 115, were their favourite movies (Only one movie was the option for every MGR Fan).

The songs they choose were all philosophical positive energy vibrating songs no sad songs. Those who have saw MGR in person, his Fans belonging to Muslim and Christian community have expressed that MGR is the Gods Messenger and Hindus as the Incarnation of God.

Some of the interviews made me cry that much help was provided by MGR to the needy. One MGR Fan Bachar Ali from Kizhakarai has narrated his family’s indebtedness to Philanthropist MGR. His father died and his family suffered economically and her mother with her children came to Chennai and went to meet MGR in his Ramavaram Gardens, MGR was getting ready for Panam Padaithavan shooting so they waited for him after an hour MGR came back from shooting and he was wearing a Black pant and Black Red Shirt, he asked what was the problem and his mother explained MGR comforted her for her loss and gave 5000 rupees (nowadays it is worth in lakhs). With that philanthropic help of MGR they purchased a house and started their own business now they are referring him as the light of their life.

Another incident narrated by MGR Devotee Singaram from Pondichery that who do not like MGR often say that MGR paints his face and patches to look fair. He wanted to clear the doubt so one day when he got the chance to meet MGR in person with other friends asked for the permission to touch his hands, MGR nodded he first touched his hands and felt like rock and then he touched his face and observed that the skin tone is natural and it is colour of rose. MGR mockingly said Is your doubt cleared? after that whenever someone says that MGR colour is make up he goes up for fight.
