One Plane One Passenger

In June 1996, I was undergoing a course on Airlines Ticket Management. My Instructor was Mr.Poondi Balaji he has just retired from Singapore Airlines Chennai Branch. He was taking Airline Ticket management class, on that day he was teaching about different kind of itinerary, then he gave an example about open jaw and one way ticket and the subject shifted to Japan Mr.Kanu who was a Doctor and who treated MGR's Brain tumor.

When MGR was critical Doctors referred to Dr.Kanu who is a specialist in treating tumours in the brain. Arrangements were made but there was no schedule flight from Japan to Chennai. Singapore Airlines arranged uncharted flight to fly Dr.Kanu to Chennai. The Boeing flight having a capacity to carry more than 300 people reached Chennai with only one passenger on board to save one man. Poondi Balaji told that it is waste of fuel to take that one passenger for a flight as a joke. My mind was thinking differently it is not for one mans breath it is Millions life they are dealing with. Whoever taken the decision is correct.

After recuperation MGR showed is birth nature his generosity and gratitude to Dr.Kanu. The portraits that hang in MGR's home are his Mother, his mentor Annadurai and Dr.Kanu. Such was his position he has given to the doctor.


I was fortunate to hear this from my teacher Poondi Balaji, if I was blogging in 1996 I would have asked him personally about the flight crew and time and other technical details.

சில நாட்களுக்கு முன்பு 2012 ஆம் ஆண்டில் கோவை மாநகரில் மக்கள் திலகத்தின் படங்களின் சாதனை விபரங்களை பதிவு செய்திருந்தேன். அப்படங்கள் திரையிட்டபோது (சில படங்களின்) செய்தி தாள்களில் வெளிவந்த விளம்பரங்கள் மற்றும் சுவரொட்டி விளம்பரங்களை இன்று பதிவு செய்கிறேன். இதில் திருப்பூரில் வெளிவந்த சில படங்களும் உண்டு. மறு வெளியீட்டு படங்களில் மக்கள் திலகத்தின் படங்களுக்கு கிடைக்கும் வரவேற்பு மகத்தானது. சாதனை சரித்திரம், சகாப்த சக்கரவர்த்தி மக்கள் திலகத்தின் திரைப்படங்கள் நேற்று மட்டுமல்ல இன்றும், நாளையும் சரித்திரம் படைக்கும். வாழ்க அவர் புகழ்.

As a beginning of writing MGR movie reviews I start with Black and White movie.

Most of MGR Fans know that Roman Holiday Tamil version was filmed and it was acted by MGR in the role of American Journalist Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck)? If you have watched that beautiful film 1953 Roman Holiday (black and white) directed by William Wyler and starred by Gregory Peck, Audrey Hepburn, you cannot imagine and relate the film to MGR.


The fact is MGR story writers know how to use Gregory Peck's character Joe Bradley to MGR and give less importance to the character of Princess Ann. They refined the story to MGR's image and added songs and fights as necessary to the Tamil film. Can you guess the film, if no the answer is "Chandrodayam" MGR is a News reporter who has lot of affection to the Poor and doing his duty as it is. Princess Ann character is donned by Jayalalitha who is a Rich Girl who doesn’t know the outer world. She comes out of the her mansion and she was taken care by MGR. She falls in love, duet songs, and fights as usual.

MGR's villain was M.R.Radha who is the Editor of the News Paper, who as usually utters "Suttuduven" (I will shoot you) in this movie also. MGR was from Dravidian movement his film reviews were always remarked badly by most of the yesteryear News Papers and Magazines.

In this film one scene M.R.Radha was greeted by a Producer who asks him to praise his movie and boos his opponent film which is released subsequently, M.R.Radha accepts the offer and says "Avan padam varutha" with a grim face, MGR interrupts and ask him to be honest in his work. When MGR exits from the scene, the Producer ask the Editor to fire him. But M.R.Radha refuses saying this kind of protesting persons should not be fired as they will create more problem when let out, it is good to work with him. (As this really happened when MGR was expelled from DMK in 1972) The lighter side was by Nagesh who always have difference of opinion with his wife.

His solo song "Buddhan, Yesu, Gandhi piranthathu" was thought provoking and the duet songs are as usual.

Thank you for having posted the nice photograph of our beloved God MGR with late artist Angamuthu Madam which is one among the rare pictures.

Our beloved God was always remembering the past life and even after attaining the higher status of ruling the entire Tamil Nadu State, he never forgot in
honouring and respecting the Junior Artists, his old Friends and Colleagues and others who have associated with him at the beginning stage.

He was bed ridden for quite some time.

He was identified in the entire South Chennai area by way of displaying variety of Posters with Different images of our beloved God MGR on his every Birth day and Death Anniversary.

Let us all Pray our God to give enough strength and tolerance for the bereaved family in bearing the loss and may the soul rest in peace.

About the BBC Interview:

First when I heard this 17 minute interview I did not know where the interview was taken and I mentioned that the year should be 1974. But recently one Mr.Ramesh from London contacted me and told that the interviewer Krishnamurthy is his father. And further he emailed me some more images with our beloved Leader MGR and the interviewer Krishnamurthy. And also mentioned that his father Krishnamurthy expired on Feb 1974. So the interview should be in early 1974 or 1973 July - August. Since the Film Festival was held in Moscow on July 1973.



Mr.Ramesh told that the interview took place in BBC Bush House, Strand, London, WC2B 4PH. For further informations and photos of MGR shots in BBC studio are in the link below.

45 வருடங்களுக்கு முன்பு,

பத்மினி பிக்சர்ஸ் சார்பில், பி. ஆர். பந்துலு அவர்கள் தயாரித்து .இயக்கி, 11-01-1968 அன்றைய தினம், சென்னை குளோப், பிளாசா, அகஸ்தியா, மேகலா, ஸ்ரீனிவாசா, ஆகிய திரை அரங்குகளில் வெளியிடப்பட்டது.

ரகசிய போலீஸ் 115 படத்தின் இதர சிறப்புகள் :

1. சென்னை நகரில் சுமார் 100 மீட்டர் தூரமே உள்ள 2 அரங்குகளில் (குளோப் மற்றும் பிளாசா) ஒரே சமயத்தில் வெளியிடப்பட்டது.

குளோப் அரங்கில் 15 நாட்களும், பிளாசா அரங்கில் 78 நாட்களும், மேகலாவில் 64 நாட்களும்,. அகஸ்தியாவில் 56 நாட்களும், ஸ்ரீனிவாசா அரங்கில் 50
நாட்களும், தினசரி 3 காட்சிகள் வீதம் வெற்றிகரமாக ஓடியது.

2. செவிக்கினிய ஆறு பாடல்களாகிய -

கண்ணே - கனியே, முத்தே - மணியே ..... என்கின்ற ஜோடிப் பாடலும்,

உன்னை எண்ணி என்னை மறந்தேன் என்கின்ற பி.சுசீலா பாடிய தனிப் பாடலும்,

கண்ணில் தெரிகின்ற வானம் கைகளில் வாராதோ என்கின்ற ஜோடிப்பாடலும்

என்ன பொருத்தம் நமக்குள் இந்த பொருத்தம் என்கின்ற சர்ச்சையுடன் கூடிய ஊடல் பாடலும்

பால் தமிழ்ப்பால் எனும் நினைப்பால் இதழ் துடிப்பால் என்ற இலக்கிய பாடலும்

சந்தன குங்குமம் கொண்ட தாமரைப்பூ என்ற பி. சுசீலா குழுவினர் பாடலும்

இடம் பெற்ற திரைப்படம்.

என்ன பொருத்தம் நமக்குள் இந்த பொருத்தம் என்கின்ற சர்ச்சையுடன் கூடிய ஊடல் பாடலின் இடையே, நமது வரலாற்று நாயகன் குண்டடி
பட்ட பின்பு குரலில் ஏற்பட்ட மாற்றத்துடன், வசனங்களை பேசியவுடன் டி.எம்.எஸ் அவர்களின் குரலில் மீண்டும் பாடல் தொடரும். இது சற்று வித்தியாசமாக தெரிந்தாலும், தனது ரசிகர்கள் ஏற்றுக் கொள்வார்கள் என்ற அசைக்க முடியாத நம்பிக்கையுடன் காட்சியினை நமது மக்கள் திலகம் எம். ஜி. ஆர். அவர்கள்
வெளிப்படுத்தி இருப்பது, குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது .

3. இடைவெளி இன்றி திரையிடப்பட்ட மறு வெளியீடுகளிலும் வழக்கமான வசூல் சாதனையை ஏற்படுத்திய படம் என்றால் மிகையாகாது .

1988 ல் சங்கம் (குளிர் சாதன வசதி கொண்ட திரை அரங்கம்) கொட்டகை நிறைந்த காட்சிகளுடன் ஓடி புரட்சி செய்தது.

1992ல் ஆனந்த் அரங்கில், அப்போது வெளியான புதிய படங்களுடன் போட்டி போட்டு 12 நாட்கள் ஓடி சரித்திரம் படைத்தது.

சத்யம் காம்ப்ளெக்ஸில் (வளாகத்தில்) உள்ள 3 அரங்குகளிலும், வைகுண்ட ஏகாதசி பண்டிகையை முன்னிட்டு நள்ளிரவு காட்சியில் இந்த ஒரே படம்
திரையிடபட்டது கவனிக்கத் தக்கது.

சில வருடங்களுக்கு முன்பு புவனேஸ்வரி அரங்கில் திரையிடப்பட்ட போது 7 நாட்களில் 72,128 ரூபாய் வசூலித்தது. சமீபத்தில், மகாலட்சுமி அரங்கில்
14-12-12 முதல் திரையிடப்பட்ட போது ஒரு வாரத்தில் 95,300 ரூபாய் வசூலித்தது.


இத்துடன் 1968 ல் வெளியான போது, பிரசுரிக்கப்பட்ட தியேட்டர் பாட்டு புத்தகத்தின் முன் மற்றும் பின் அட்டையுடன், படத்தினை உருவாக்க பாடுபட்ட கலைஞர்கள் தகவலும் இணைக்கப் பட்டுள்ளது.

MGR Speech:

Here is the video clip of our beloved Leader MGR Election speech in Bhavani place, year 1980. MGR's rule was dismissed by Indira Gandhi Government in early 1980. But MGR returned to power with absolute majority over Congress and DMK strong alliance. The speech is just 6 minutes. But the impact is higher which resulted votes in favour of MGR's ADMK.

Here is another MGR speech clip, propounding what ADMK will do if they come to power. This speech was shot in the year 1977, Doordarshan Chennai studios, and at that time MGR devotee and one of my friend Mr.Alagarsamy was working in Accounts department. On that day MGR was having problem with his throat. This is the third take which our MGR took to finish the speech. The time given is 10 minutes but MGR completed the 10 minute speech within 7 minutes.

The enmity between the two groups goes way beyond competition. While Manickam is honest, compassionate and principled, his counterpart, Alaiyappan, is exactly the opposite, driven mainly by greed. Manickam's father main wish was to end the dispute between the two groups, and he persuades them to be friends. However the Sura Meenavargal refuse, and beat him to death. Manickam promises to fulfill his father's wish, and works hard to end the dispute.

The person responsible for fuelling this enmity between the two groups is the man who stands to gain the most from it all – The village Zamindar and Yajaman (M.N.Nambiar). Alaiyappan’s blind allegiance is to the Zamindar.

Manickam soon falls in love with Alaiyappan's daughter Muthazhagi (Saroja Devi), and she shows the same. However, their romance is strongly disapproved of by their communities. Things further escalate when Manickam again goes to Sura Meenavargal to seek peace, and he gets beaten up to his apparent death. Because of this, his men nearly kill Alaiyappan, who is then saved by a mysterious old man. Thankful to the old man, Alaiyappan allows him to stay for the night at his home. Muthazhagi later realizes the old man is actually Manickam in disguise, but keeps it a secret from everyone.

One day, it is a boat race between the two communities. But Manickam (still in disguise) chooses to go with Sura Meenavargal, and they eventually win the race. However, his fake beard falls down after the race, and everyone recognizes him as Manickam. The Thirukaai Meenavargal, enraged for his betrayal, forces him to leave Muthazhagi.

When Alaiyappan suddenly goes bankrupt, zamindar agrees to help him, but wants to be married to Muthazhagi in return. Alaiyappan, initially hesitant, later agrees but Muthazhagi is not ready. She is kept custody at the zamindar's mansion and is unable to escape, even Manickam (in a new disguise) is unable to save her. But the zamindar's wife (Jayanthi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jayanthi_%28actress%29)) secretly helps Muthazhagi out of the mansion. However, the former gets caught in the act by the zamindar, who then kills her. He begins to chase Muthazhagi, but is cornered by Manickam with whom he starts a battle. With both the communities finally reconciling, Alaiyappan agress for Muthazhagi and Manickam to be married.

பணத்தோட்டம் ரிலிஸ் காலகட்டத்திற்கே சென்று விட்டேன்

செல்வகுமார் சார் அதுவும் மறு வெளியீட்டில் நல்ல collection

50 வருடங்களுக்கு முன்பு ,

சரவணா பிலிம்ஸ் சார்பில், ஜி. என். வேலுமணி அவர்களால் தயாரிக்கப்பட்டு, முதன் முதலாக கே. ஷங்கர் இயக்கத்தில் 11-01-1963

அன்றைய தினம், சென்னை பிளாசா, கிரவுன், மேகலா ஆகிய திரை அரங்குகளில் வெளியிடப்பட்டது.

அந்த சமயத்தில் -

09-02-1963 அன்று முதல் "கொடுத்து வைத்தவள்" சென்னை காசினோ, மகாராணி, புவனேஸ்வரி ஆகிய அரங்குகளிலும்
22-02-1963 முதல் "தர்மம் தலை காக்கும்" சென்னை சித்ரா, பிரபாத், சரஸ்வதி ஆகிய அரங்குகளிலும்

வெளியிடப்பட்டு, சென்னை நகரின் பிரதான அரங்குகளை நமது இதய தெய்வத்தின் திரைப்படங்களே ஆக்கிரமித்து கொண்டிருந்தன

பணத்தோட்டம் படத்தின் இதர சிறப்புகள் :

1. 18 நாட்களில், குறுகிய கால தயாரிப்பாக, இப்படம் எடுக்கப்பட்டது.

2. பத்மஸ்ரீ சிவாஜி கணேசன் அவர்களை வைத்து அது நாள் வரை தயாரித்து வந்த ஜி. என். வேலுமணி அவர்கள் முதன் முறையாக

இப்படத்தின் மூலம்தான், மக்கள் திலகத்துடன் இணைந்தார்.

3. மக்கள் திலகத்தின் பிற படங்களின் கடுமையான போட்டிக்கிடையே, வெற்றிகரமாக 10 வாரங்களை கடந்து விநியோகஸ்தர்களுக்கு

நல்ல இலாபத்தை ஈட்டு தந்தது.

4. சென்னையின் மைய பகுதியில் அமைந்துள்ள "டிரைவ்-இன் உட்லண்ட்ஸ் ஹோட்டல்" வளாக திறந்த வெளி அரங்கில்,

வழக்கமாக ஆங்கில திரைப்படங்களை மட்டுமே காண்பித்து வந்த கால கட்டத்தில் முதன் முதலில் காண்பிக்கப்

பட்ட தமிழ் திரைப்படம்.

5. முத்தான ஆறு பாடல்களாகிய -

ஒரு நாள் இரவில் ..... என்கின்ற பி. சுசீலா பாடிய தனிப் பாடலும்,

ஒருவர் ஒருவராய் பிறந்தோம் என்கின்ற கோரஸ் பாடலும்

என்னதான் நடக்கும் நடக்கட்டுமே என்கின்ற தத்துவ பாடலும்

பேசுவது கிளியா இல்லை பெண்ணரசி மொழியா என்ற இனிமையான ஜோடிப் பாடலும்

மனத் தோட்டம் போடுமென்று மாயவனார் கொடுத்த உடல் என்ற சிந்தனைப்பாடலும்

ஜவ்வாது மேடையிட்டு, சர்க்கரையில் பந்தலிட்டு என்ற போதையேற்றும் பாடலும்

இடம் பெற்ற திரைப்படம்.


பேசுவது கிளியா இல்லை பெண்ணரசி மொழியா என்ற பாடலின் இடையே, சேரனுக்கு உறவா, செந்தமிழர் நிலவா என்று பொன்

மனச்செம்மலைப் போற்றி, தமிழுக்கும் அவருக்கும் இருக்கின்ற தொடர்பினை வெளிப்படுத்தி, கவியரசர் கண்ணதாசன் அவர்கள்

எழுதி இருப்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது .


6. மறு வெளியீடுகளிலும் மகத்தான வசூல் சாதனை புரிந்த படம். 1991 ம் ஆண்டில், "அகஸ்தியா" அரங்கில் 6

நாட்கள் மட்டுமே திரையிடப்பட்டு சுமார் 64,112 ரூபாய் வசூலித்தது. அதே போன்று, 'வசந்தி' அரங்கில் 7 நாட்களில்

52,466 ரூபாய் வசூலித்தது.


இத்துடன் 1963 ல் வெளியான போது, பிரசுரிக்கப் பட்ட தியேட்டர் பாட்டு புத்தகத்தின் முன் மற்றும் பின் அட்டையுடன்

கூடிய கதைச் சுருக்கம், படத்தினை உருவாக்க பாடுபட்ட கலைஞர்கள் விவரம் இணைக்கப் பட்டுள்ளது.

Body Language in MGR Movies:

Definition of Body Language: Body Language is the unspoken communication that goes on in every Face-to-Face encounter with another human being. It tells you their true feelings towards you and how well your words are being received. Between 60-80% of our message is communicated through our Body Language, only 7-10% is attributable to the actual words of a conversation.

Here are some examples of Good Body Language commonly portrayed by MGR in films:

1) Brisk, Erect walk – Shows confidense
2) Standing with hands on hips – Readiness
3) Arms crossed on chest – Defensiveness (When facing a villain)
4) Stroking chin - Trying to make a decision

Now in detail:

In MGR movies the Body language is perfect. All actors know how to perform and portray their Body language in career as well as in public.

In the Film "Thirudathae" – Don’t steal, MGR does a negative role, when he is a thief he often keeps his hand inside the Pant pocket. After realizing his mistake the Body language also changes. In one scene were MGR's mother queries the innocence, MGR eyes evade from his mother, and this scene lasts only for 2 seconds.

In "Raja Desingh" – King Desingh movie after the climax, MGR and the co star S.S.Rajendran stand as a portrait, in this scene MGR stands still, there is no movement but S.S.Rajendran blinks his eyes.

In "Malai Kallan" – Mountain thief, MGR perfects the styles or the mannerism of a Muslim.
Shaking hands tells lot about a character, whether the character is dominating or subsiding. In many MGR films his hand shake with a Villain shows his domination attitude. The same hand shake with a friend is different. In "Nallavan Vazhvan" when MGR congratulates M.N.Nambiyar on becoming the Inspector of Police MGR grabs Nambiyar's hand with his two hands with Nambiyar, what that means, the hand shake tells that you are most valuable person to me, in the story both characters are dependent to each other.

How will a poor person behave when he sees a 100 rupee note, in film "Anba Vaa" MGR character is a Millionaire but acts as a Poor guy to the heroine and receives a 100 rupee note, how he takes the note is notable.

How does a shy person speak in a stage, how his body language look like? That can be seen perfectly performed by MGR in his film "Thozhilalli" – Labourer and Enga Veetu Pillai.

How does a caring person hug look like? Watch it in "Thazampoo" he hugs the other person(his brother acted by Asokan), his hands rises from down to up, like carrying posture – that is for caring and loving nature.

In "Kudieruntha Kovil" – were one MGR enters the house and tries to kill his mother on seeing 'Annadurai' (his mentor) Photo his face turns aside, his killing nature alters for a second.

When MGR asked to continue to act a Businessman (who was a smuggler) he resist and when he was shown the photo of her sister trapped, MGR shoulder droops, without uttering a word he shows the acceptance in the film "Ninaithathai Mudipavan".

In all the double action movies, MGR gives different Body language or mannerism to each character so as to differentiate and make people understand easily. Like twisting his nose in "Nadodi Mannan" – Wanderer and the King, playing with his fingers near chest level in "Engu Veetu Pillai", snapping and saying understand in "Ninaithathai Mudipavan", rubbing his neck in "Matukara Velan" – Cowherds Velan etc.

There is no ending if I start to give out the list of all his films. In every movie, his portrayal of Body language to the character is perfect.

MGR continues to live in minds of Madurai people


Re-released Naadodi Mannan still draws huge crowds always


A fan of MGR who has pasted the late Chief Minister's images in his tri-cycle.
One of the things that have made theorists of popular culture and even political scientists to look and re-look into a phenomenon is in fact that of the late Chief Minister and matinee idol M.G. Ramachandran.

MGR's super hit film Naadodi Mannan was re-released in Madurai on March 18, 2011 at Thanga Regal Theatre and even after almost 50 years since its release the film invited huge crowds.

Madurai was always seen as the bastion of MGR and it was here many of his firsts were achieved.

Madurai is a city which is synonymous with a strong visual culture and carnivals, the most important aspect of the visual culture still even in this era of creative commons and digital era seems to be films.

Madurai has Asia's biggest film theatre, Thangam (now defunct) with a seating capacity close to 4,000. It has had a history of frenetic fan following which always had a spiritual dimension where the film stars who were treated as demigods. MGR always had (still has a) vivid presence in the visual, political, and emotional landscape of Madurai, says film historian Sara Dickey.

Demigod Status

In fact it was here that when MGR suffered a stroke, fans cut off fingers, limbs, and offered them to God praying for his recovery.

It was Madurai Veeran( Warrior of Madurai) a film after the folklore legend turned deity, the first MGR film which ran for 25 weeks (silver jubilee), his first fan club was from Madurai and his foray into politics all had the Madurai connection, and of course his last film Maduraiyai Meeta Sundarapandian (The King who liberated Madurai) had the city as its central subject.

MGR came to cinema from a stage career, beginning at the age of six, when he entered the Madurai Original Boys Company, where he learned acting, dancing, and sword-fighting—arts that served him well in his later career.

It was in Tamukkam grounds in Madurai, a grand function was held on October 26, 1958 to celebrate the astounding success of Naadodi Mannan.

MGR and Gemini Ganesan both acted together in only one movie that is Mugarasi produced by Chinnappa Devar. Below is the image taken in front of the theater. Look the garlands over MGR and Gemini Ganesan image. Both having same number of garlands.
