In early 2011, Bharat Bala read about a 2008 incident involving three immigrant oil workers from India being kidnapped in the Darfur region of Sudan and how they had managed to escape from post being hostages. While improvising his script, the director met the former hostages who were held for 21 days under captivity. After the 58th National Film Awards ceremony in September 2011, the director narrated the first half of the film script and then actor Dhanush agreed to work. In March 2012, the film and collaborations were officially announced.
The director opined that the fishing community in southern India goes through terrible hardship and countries like Nigeria, Sudan, Libya borrow them as hard labor. The character played by actor Dhanush is of a simple, economically poor but physically strong guy from a very remote village who was in need of a job and hence, this forms the outline of the film. Parvathi Menon was signed on to play a key role as well as the love interest in the film.
The director was inspired by the 2008 French-Liberian film Johnny Mad Dog, which starred a real life group of LURD child soldiers and subsequently chose to retain them as well as the cinematographer of that film, Marc Koninckx, both to be a part of Mariyaan.
A press release of March 2013 along with a poster releaved the film's outline as "A young man is faced with adversity. Life deals him immense challenges, and forces him to struggle to thrive. But he does, nevertheless, fighting to survive by thriving on the sheer undying spirit of the human will to survive. Along his thrilling journey is a tryst with adventure, a smattering of drama and a gritty tale that shows the power of love in extreme circumstances. And that is the story of Mariyaan."
 sounds very interesting

Naetru Aval irundhaal - in Mariyaan for A R Rahman sir, a duet with Vijay Prakash. Naetru is a poignant song, as much as I perceived it and this song will be one of my personal favorites and is extremely special to me. Grateful to God for the opportunities and cannot but be thankful for the grace and blessings of the Almighty and well-wishers - the ones I know personally and the ones who stood by me without even knowing me personally during very tough times last year.
I always wished that I could see/ meet Bharatbala sir. Always believed he was responsible for reinstalling a sense of national pride to most if not all of us with Vande Mataram. God must have listened to this one too and has taken some 14 years to answer this prayer ;) but at least it has been answered.
With gratitude and love
Hope you like the way I have sung Naetru.

Music
By early May 2012, A. R. Rahman had finished composing two songs which were filmed in Africa. As per reports of 18 August 2012, a visually scintillating yet emotional song named Nenje Yaezhu crooned by the music composer himself, was finalized after being shot in one of the highest and oldest off coastal deserts of the world featuring the leading duo. In the end of January 2013, singer Velmurugan recorded a song for the film. The recorded song is stated to have alternate versions with other set of singers. The first teaser of the film made it evident that the audio rights were bagged by Sony Music. Out of five songs in the soundtrack album, actor Dhanush has penned the lyrics of a rustic yet character driven[19]song sung by Yuvan Shankar Raja.[20]In an interview with Times of India, the film director claimed that the particular track was already recorded but Rahman insisted on re-recording it with a singer who could impart more emotions with an earthy voice to the song and opted for Yuvan. The song was recorded on 25 April 2013 in Chennai. Two songs are penned by poet Vaali, one by Kabilan. The song Nenje Yaezhu is written by Kutti Revathi. Reportedly, the complete soundtrack album was supposed to release on 23 April 2013 but was pushed to mid May 2013. The track Nenje Yaezhu is scheduled for a single release on 3 May 2013.

Thanks for the link guys, been waiting for this all week!
I don’t know what the song’s subject deals with, I don’t know what message is being delivered but I know I’m crying because the emotions conveyed through Rahman Ji’s voice have strummed right into my heart, my core and my soul. The beauty of Rahman Ji’s singing is that even if you hear it after a while you will still feel spiritually ascended. These days whilst other MDs are out there experimenting with effects and what not, Rahman Ji comes back to familiar territory doing what he does best. Songs these days lack true emotion and while its good give yourself eargasms via headphones once in a while, it doesn’t harm to let your heart hear some music rather than your ears feeling music.
An iota of Rahman Ji’s music truly makes the world go around.
Thank you!

Whether/whether not getting Yuvan on Maryan was publicity stunt, I don't know?! I don't think so though as before it has been his own decision to get Himesh/Farhan to sing for him but the two refused the offer... oh well, their loss. This time round Dhanush suggested Yuvan so it wasn't planned as Dhanush and Yuvan's repertoire is amongst the best in TFM. Enga area  Whatever the politics may be in TFM, I don't care... all I kno is "Kadal Raasa" is a damn intoxicating song from the trailer.

Maryan – The deep and mysterious ocean…..
If there is a musical equivalent of magic , it should be Allah Rakha Rahman’s music . This may not be the universal truth , but it does sound true when one listens to some of his soundtracks which deserve to be called classics. This evening when I laid my hands on Maryan’s OST – I had a question on whether it will be magic to the ears . It took some time for me to get my answer , but once I had it , i felt it had to be shared and hence this blogpost.
Nenje Ezhu kicks off with chords and percussion which remind you of Rahman’s earlier works . The man himself takes center stage thereafter to sing about eternal hope , a hope which is born out of divine love. The song talks of never ending hope and eternal love and the superb lyrics make you repeat the song again and again and again. As ARR croons kadhal endrum azhivathillai , the song reaches it’s crescendo and takes you another world – a world where fairy tales come true. Yet this song is not without glitches. The tune has a heard before feel which I couldn’t shake off and I felt that the pronunciation of the inspirational words could have been better. That said , the flaws seem minor when compared to the feel of the song.
Innum konja neram is true to its words. By the time the song ends you wish that the song could have lasted longer , that lovely it is. The ghatam , accordion and the flute create a lovely menage e trois , which becomes all the more lovely thanks to the fantabulous lyric and the superlative singing by Vijay Prakash and Shweta Mohan. As the song goes on , one is taken back in time to a journey in a bullock cart , with the lovely bells from the bull’s anklets ringing in your ears .The singing , tune and the orchestra work is so very reminiscent of MSV , so much so that one wonders if this is ARR’s tribute to the maestro. The song clocks 5 minutes and 14 secs , yet once the song ends , you wonder why the song was short. Innum Konjam Neram Irunthathan enna indeed.
Vijay Prakash is on a roll these days. He completely pwns Innum Konjam Neram with his Hariharan-ish rendition and nails down the brief completely with Netru – so much so that , when one listens to this songs with eyes closed , his rendition reminds one of a young K.J yeshudas in superlative form. Vijay creates magic with the mellifluous tune , Chinmayi and the orchestral work adding to the glory. The orchestral work is very minimal but sweeping – like a banked fire , if one can call it that. In a matter of hours , this song has become a favorite and to me its one of the best songs of the OST , if not the best – you know you’ve hit pay dirt when you listen to a song for 30 minutes on loop.
Sonna Pareeya is the masala song of the album , if one can call it . To me it is that song of the album , where people take a break from the analysis and just go ho hum to the tune. To me it is one of the weakest song of the album and sounds almost like a kuthu song. What redeems the song is that nayanam in the interludes and the guitar work in the background in addition to the orchestral work. May be it’s because the song appears after two killer melodies , it didn’t stick with me at all.
Sakthisree Gopalan sure can make a living out of angsty tracks . She is almost as heavenly as she sounded in Nenjukulle and it is her singing which redeems the song along with the splendid tune and superb string work. Just like Aditi Paul’s version of ayyayyao was called a lady and the violin , Enga Pona can be called the Siren and the guitar – as they are the only things that stay with you even after the song ends. What works against the song are the horrendous lyric – wonder if the lyricist was not paid enough or on time , to turn in such third grade work .That said , a superb sophomore effort from Sakthisree.
Africa can as well be used by Africa’s tourism department or by the African Cricket team – cheenu mama able and willing. Blaaze collaborates with AR Rahman after a long time and ends up creating an almost Carribean sounding visiting card for the African Continent. One need not be an oracle to know that this song will be placed when the titular character lands on Africa and the song may sound better with Visuals.
Last but not the least comes Kadal Raasa. When I heard that yuvan had sung this number for AR Rahman , I thought it was prone to be a disaster but Yuvan surprises ( with or without processing) and how ! Kadal Raasa is all about a man’s yearning for his land and roots. The nadaswaram makes an appearance yet again and segues infinitely with the percussion work which goes on to take center stage. The lyrics are again crafted beautifully and give away the titular character’s feeling and condition and an inkling of the story. The song is a keepsake , just for the nadaswaram in the interludes , which stays in one’s mind hours after one is done listening to the song. While Kadal Raasa is not the best song of the album , its not the worst either and may be could have sounded better had Velmurugan sung it as initially planned.
To sum up , Maryan is not the masterclass that kadal was but its not mediocre like Jab Tak hai Jaan. What it is , is the musical equivalent of magic , thanks to innum konja neram , netru and yenga pona raasa.

This to me is very much up there with Kadal. Kadal had a lot of innovation and experimentation. This, in this he has just let the singers do the job and sat back and added a bit of music here and there, just so soulful! This album makes me feel like am back in the 90s after a long time...
The lyrics are great! The singing is amazing.
Though i said Kadal had a lot of innovation and experimentation. Maryan, in all its simplicity has some hidden gems of innovation which I really cant explain. I just feel it. May be my knowledge in music is not good enough for me to put it into words.

My listening order* at the mo:
1. Kadal Raasa Naan - Yuvan  The structure of the song seems to be a bit messy (am I allowed to say that? :O ) but it's definitely got me coming back to it!
2. Enga Pona Rasa - Just beautiful.
3. Nenje Ezhu - Songs with passion are ARR's domain but can't help but think "can I have just a little bit more passion please?" :P
4. Netru Aval - listening to this song for the "Aagayathil Nooru Nilakalum, Angange Neela Purakalum Paranthana" bit ^^. Seems a bit pedestrian otherwise.
5. Innum Konjam - All I can think to say about this song is that its nice. Just lightly floats in mid air and then disappears.
Sonapareeya, hmm. I love my Africa, hmmmmmmmmm. Not sure what to say about these. Wasted commercial hit opportunities? I know ARR has said in the past that he makes songs to suit the context of the movie but can't help but feel that these songs could've been the upbeat hits that this album is kinda lacking.

mariyaan music review
So, we have Dhanush and AR Rahman coming together for the first time. But this is about Dhanush and AR Rahman. What makes this album so special is the combination of Bharatbala and AR Rahman.
Bharatbala was the brains behind ARR’s famous 1997 patriotic album Vante Mataram, and their relationship stretches for a long time- just that it was never displayed in a mainstream movie as Bharatbala was yet to direct his first feature movie- until Maryan that is.
Regardless, AR Rahman has given a stonking, high original album for Bharatbala that competes tit-for-tat with ARR’s brilliant work for Mani Ratnam in Kadal. Similarities cannot be missed, because just like Kadal, this film too is about a man from the fishing community and his travails.
But yet ARR gives this album such a distinct flavour that it stands out on its own- none of these songs remind you directly Kadal songs- and that’s not to say whether they are better or worse. They are just incomparable but equally as good.
Now that is a testament to AR Rahman.
Nenje Yezhu (AR Rahman)
There are some emotions, some spirit, some passion, that only the voice and the musical touch of AR Rahman can evoke. Nenje Yezhu sets the album starting with a sense of brimming positivity that concurs with the theme of Maryan- the perseverance of one man. The song is about a man clinging on to the hope of love, and about how love offers the only reprieve even though despite all the hardships that the man faces. ARR did Vanthe Mataram for Bharatbala, and I am sure in the annals of time, this song will be remembered for generations to come when they look for inspiration and magic. Pure ARR territory.
I Love my Africa (Blaaze and AR Rahman)
This is a bit of a South American fusion and elements dazzled along with African elements to churn out a number with a distinct flavour to it. The song at times appears to be your typical introduction to a new country number that leaves next to no impression, but something about the arrangements and Blaaze’s presence make this number quite catchy when you listen to it on its own- though its almost a certainty it will have very limited time on the screen.
Yenga Ponna Raasa (Saktishree Gopalan and AR Rahman)
Saktishree Gopalan is at it again. But this is nowhere near the same as Nenjukulle from Kadal. This is a typical AR Rahman slow poison- its like a seaside ballad with minimal percussions, that picks up soul as it builds up momentum slowly. The middle stanza has ARR’s genius stamped all over it- and Sakthishree is quickly but surely making a household name for herself. What a singer this woman is. While she brought out the love of a woman so well in Nenjukulle, she expresses the pain of a stricken lover with such aptness in her voice. Another great ARR find, needless to say.
Kadal Raasa Naan (Yuvan Shankar Raja)
Well, this is not something you get often- Yuvan Shankar Raja singing a song for AR Rahman, for Dhanush’s dancing pleasure. To be honest, Kaadal Raasa Naan starts in very untypical AR Rahman manner- its quite run of the mill, but just when you get that impression- the song is thrown into a medley mixture to portray a man’s life as a fisherman. Yes, the theme, setting, and the purpose sounds very similar to Elay Keechan from Kadal- but this song was meant for Dhanush’s feet to do the dancing- and it’s as catchy as you would expect it would be. With ARR’s quirky tunes added in the middle- you will walk away remembering this number for some time. Thumbs up!
Sonapareeya (Javed Ali and Haricharan)
Right after Kadal Raasa Naan, the catchy tunes continue with Sonapareeya, a song that absolutely takes off from the word go! It sounds like it has very little special going for it, but you can’t avoid tapping your feet along with the song as it grows. Haricharan and Javed Ali are quite a stunning combination- and they infuse such infectious energy into this song that it will leaves quite a mark on you too. Definitely matches the Kadal Raasa Naan energy, though as you would expect ARR- both these songs may fall in the same genre- but they sound nowhere near the same!
Netru Aaval Irundhal (Vijay Prakash and Chinmayi)
The first time I listened to this number while working, I could not understand why Dhanush singled out this number as his pick from the album. I wanted to be sure about this number before I wrote this review, and I was right. There are one of those songs when you just let yourself go to bask in its magic. If you have loved Moongil Thottam from Kadal, you will know what I am talking about. It’s a beautiful duet ballad, and Vijay Prakash is in impeccable form here- it’s easily among the best numbers he has ever sung. Chinmayi compliments him with such succulent perfection. Once you get a hang of this, you won’t get enough of it.
Masterpiece.
Innum Konja Neram (Vijay Prakash and Shweta Mohan)
A pretty perfect antithesis to this album. This slow, catchy, carefree song is a simple number about a guy appealing to his girlfriend that he wants more time to spend with her. That’s what the album will leave you with- it grows with a wave of a momentum and gets to a point of magical touch where you are left asking for more.
But there’s not just enough to satisfy your thirst- but that’s not to say it falls short in any way. It would be a travesty to say something like that. This album is just like this song- beautiful, innocent, and just not long enough to quench all your thirst.
This is one of the most pure Tamil albums AR Rahman has come up with in a long time, and it proves that if given the freedom to just compose a mixture of love-personal perseverance songs for an movie that would ride highly on his music, he would weave magic!
Who said the nothing beats the ARR of the 90s? Adapt your ears and find the magic between these lines, especially in Netru Aaval Irundha.

'Maryan' Music Review: AR Rahman creates magic again
Ace film director Bharatbala's 'Maryan' is a much awaited release. There are huge expectations attached to the film. Recently, the music of the film was launched and has been liked by the audiences. The single track 'Nenje Ezhu' composed and sung by AR Rahman has become a popular chartbuster in the South.
Music Director: AR Rahman
Singers: AR Rahman, Vijay Prakash, Swetha Menon, Chinmayee, Javed Ali, Haricharan, Shakti Sree Gopalan, Blaaze, Yuvan Shankar Raja, Nakash Aziz, Youth Choir.
\'Maryan\' will feature Dhanush and Parvati Menon in lead roles. The film is directed by Bharat Bala.
Rating: 4/5
I Love My Africa
The first track in the album is one of the easiest way to land in Africa without actually having to travel the distance. The beats bring up the flavor of the African continent. Opening on a majestic note, the song is full of patriotism, celebrating the spirit of the African continent.
AR Rahman has sung the song 'I love my Africa, Welcome to Africa' in his magical voice, it is almost similar to the energy and vigour that we all felt in his 'Vande Maataram'. But only those two lines, barring a few more, are in English, while all the other lines are not quite understandable, being in Afrikaans, but each and every note is thoroughly enjoyable.
Innum Konjam Neram
This song is soul steering, it is a sweet duet in a conversational style with meaningful lyrics. The usage of strings in the signature music and trailing humming are purely magical.
Kadal Raasa Naan
This is for the first time music composer Yuvan Shankar Raja has sung for AR Rahman. He has given voice to 'Maryan' (Dhanush) in the film. The song 'Kadal Raasa Naan' that is descriptive in its character. The hero is stuck in a foreign land and sings this song to express his pain, struggle and anger in this song.
Naetru Aval Irundhal
After watching the trailer one can easily relate to the voice as Vijay has sung this song with immense dedication. He has delivered the very essence of the character who is seperated from his love and finds himself lonely. Penned down beautifully to suit the mood, the song has been excellently rendered in brilliant voices underlying emotions of longing to meet and the pain of separation. The use of strings and flute is very intelligent and adds to the emotion, striking the right notes.
Nenje Ezhu
The song is a popular number already among the audience. Beginning on a hopeful note and ending with a victorious emotion, the song is magical, and truly inspiring. The slow and steady rise in the strings from the background adds more colour to the race towards an alluring destination. The song stays on even long after one has heard it.
Sonapareeya
The song 'Sonapareeya' sung by Javed Ali is a light song with a lot of beats and foot tapping elements in it. The chorus adds to the emotions of the song. The beats of this song are also used in the trailer of the film. Usage of violins garners a lot of attraction in this song.
Enga Ponga Raasa
Though a short song with not many instruments, but gentle breezy guitar and keys sparingly, the song is packed with emotions, and is a beautiful package, that will remain close to every heart. We get to hear a different Shakthisree Gopalan in this song, from her previous hit 'Nenjukulla'. Starting on a note of search and ending in longing, we have yet another song from the same album, that can be related to one's own life.
Start to finish, the album is purely magical and would make for one of the most cherished repertoires. Coming from none less than the genius, the album sparks further curiosity and interest in the movie. In all, anyone would fall in love with 'Mariyaan'.

The Moods of Maryan – Music Review
Copied and pasted from: http://caughtinthemusicalstorm.wordpress.com/2013/05/16/the-moods-of-maryan-music-review/
I can’t decide which song I like the most but does that even matter?! If I play the deciding game then I’ll probably be delaying unnecessary time so it’s slightly fair to share my perspective on the audio of “Maryan” now!
I’ve noticed that liking a song hardly depends on the listener’s mood and in fact a person’s mood could be sombre but as soon as they hear a peppy song they feel at ease. However, there are also people who will exclusively only listen to songs that reflect their mood.
The moods created by “Maryan” songs range greatly i.e. the hyper and full of energy “I Love My Africa” follows the mellifluous and soft “Enga Pona Raasaa”. I don’t know what conclusion the Music Department arrive to in regards to the order of a track list. For e.g. I thought it was jarring to go from the former to the latter as I was deeply engulfed by former whilst the latter followed like an unwanted wake-up call. That said I’ve actually warmed up to the transition between each song in the album. I believe this is a very clever move on Rahman Ji’s/Music Department’s part. In the past Rahman Ji used to provide gargantuan mood transitions within in a song’s arrangement and now he is doing this for albums! As much as an aficionado I might seem I really think these transitions are there to cater for a wider number of listeners and I’m glad that “Maryan” has been accepted by the masses, classes and the critics.
I still sometimes feel skeptical about why some songs have been delivered in their way but thankfully the bastard critic inside me is on holiday. From a neutral POV it’s clear that the album just like the majority of Rahman Ji’s output exhibits a very sincere performance and whilst it’s not the greatest album it still deserves a place in the top 10 if not 5 greatest albums.
1. “Nenjae Ezhu” – There’s hardly a great deal of melodic variation here but the infinity no. of layers leaves us with a task of revisiting this number just to unearth these layers. On top of this you have Rahman Ji’s soaring emotive vocals which will make anyone want to sing along. Songs like this make you feel like running to Rahman Ji and giving him a tight hug!
2. “Innum Konjam” – A dreamy and feather like duet! It leaves us floating. Words will fail me in describing its beauty.
3. “Naetru Aval – Vintage material displaying a sound only exclusive to Rahman Ji! We have to hear at least one song like this is every Rahman Ji OST otherwise we will whinge like stubborn and spoilt children!
4. “Sonapareeya” – Killer beats N.B. Hearing specific songs on noise isolating headphones make it easy for us to decipher nuances but on the contrary for the first time EVER I couldn’t hear certain sounds on my headphones until I heard the song on my stereo/woofer. The low bass approximately between 20 and 40hz hits you wonderfully. It definitely deserves to be no. 1 in a “banging car tunes” playlist. Javed Ali’s acrobatic vocal portions sprinkle a dessert of Indian flavours.
5. “Enga Pona Raasaa” – The humming portions make one feel as if they’ve skipped a heartbeat. The song truly captures your attention and plays with your emotions. In this playfield of emotions you might just end up in a never ending trance of hypnosis. This song will make a sane person insane and an insane person sane.
6. “I Love My Africa” – Djembes, Djunduns and other percussions flourish. This safari tour is for all ages. If I were to describe this song in one word then it would be cute.
7. “Kadal Raasa Naan” – This song probably has one of the best preludes in Rahman Ji’s discography. Rahman Ji has attempted a “Dappan koothu”, he isn’t keen on composing these type of songs but makes an exception here and delivers a joyful experience.
Bharat Bala does a wonderful job at extracting the songs. Rahman Ji gets the singers right and whilst it’s not his forte composing certain genres he nevertheless proves us wrong and surpasses our expectations once again. He has tried new sounds and experimented with sounds that appeal to the mass. All in all these sounds sum up the album as unique and heartwarming.
Happy Listening!

You meant, ARR could have processed Yuvan's voice better? Or, you meant, yuvan could have done it better?

Didn't like the way Yuvan sounded when he goes "hey, hey" after "netthili kuzhambu vaadai". Other than that, Yuvan's singing is good  And in few places, he sounds exactly like Rahman

True that is! I've not listened to Kadal rasa much. Only once or twice I think!
But, in few other songs, Yuvan sounds like ARR!
And, I hope fans don't mind me saying here  ARR's singing in that additional song in Raavan was sounded more like yuvan's  :yessir:

Of a thousand suns and a hundred moons
And so I logged into Twitter one fine morning, to the whole timeline discussing/spoiling the joys of Maryan’s OST, propelling me into the last lap of hunt towards the soundtrack. A wait that was eating into my sleep the previous night, surprisingly ended on a beautiful morning as though Maryan brought it with it. I mean like, how was that possible? Quite a cloudy and cool Trichy in the middle of the Agni Nakshatram season. And one of the city’s best possessions, the Tanjavur highway (that led to my college) felt like some dream way. And then I played Netru Aval Irundhal.
“Aagaayathil Nooru Nilaakalum, Angange neela puraakalum parandhana..”
I knew this was a line that would stick to me for life. So I gave in my best efforts to assimilate all the tiny pulses that went through the first listen. It is at these moments, you understand how fragile the human brain is. Brain vs ARR. The Mozart won hands down. There’s always @ursmusically’s post for you to understand how you would feel while listening to this one.
What I saw though, was this ( of course, in the background of the soaring tremolo strings, and a divine chorus)
How does a goodbye feel musically? A tango between an accordion, a flute, and a ghatam. And there’s Kabilan’s fundamental, but aching lyrics, to which Vijay Prakash and Shwetha Menon do enough justice, and more in the lovely Innum Konjam Neram. But lining all this is that tiny spark between the lady and the lad, a little quirk that isn’t drowned in an overwhelming sense of separation; That’s how seriously the song has been looked at, and shaped up. It’s quite interesting how the most minimal of ARR’s tunes can hold so many layers beneath (or how these ‘invisible’ foundational layers hold strong the skyscrapers of his compositions). One of the more prominent hooks here, is how the string section just plays along the singer’s notes. Simple, but poetic.
Shakthisree Gopalan, is someone I can never thank enough for two songs. The very underrated Jab Tak Hai Jaan, and the much adored Nenjukulle. With Enga Pona Raasa, she blends the fragility, and affection of her earlier songs with an element of pathos that works on another plane that the other two did not. There’s this breath in her voice that makes me dizzy; not to forget how heartbreaking deep voices can be. The beautifully done acoustic arrangements of the first minute, culminate into an impacting tryst between Shakthishree’s divine humming decked over Rahman’s very intricately arranged harmony ft Abhay Jodhpurkar. It’s beautiful how the entire orchestration and the rendition are a phase apart in the harmony. That sends this subtle element of disconnect, her anguish of separation And oh, the song is an absolute heart-ache.
Sonapareeya and Kadal Raasa are identical for the fact that they took more time to settle over me, or like I needed time to move over the first three. On the album’s scale, they’re one down; But there’s so much to look into yet. The brilliant nadaswaram interludes in Kadal Raasa. A seamless cross between African beats and namma ooru dappankoothu. And relatively much likable singing from Yuvan, quite splendid in the first two minutes (after which he attempts to sing high notes in ARR’s scale, botching down the feel). Sonapareeya, I felt Haricharan’s choice here was quite cliched and not as exquisite as Javed Ali’s, which just felt so apt. Killer singing from the man. And delicious use of the violins; an interesting motif with a slight distortion twist and much appreciable when it goes all crying over “Kenjumpadi vekkuriye Sonapareeya.” Only Rahman.
One number that was given step-motherly treatment on album release was Nenje Ezhu, thanks to this single release business. It’s quite an uncomplicated tune. But it compensates for its simplicity with the depth in orchestration and the personalized stories it sings to your mind. There’s this broad wide desert like synthscape, he creates around the song that worms into us subliminally, and as if every touch on the harpeji just sent us deeper into that universe. It starts with just those drums in the beginning, then the guitar enters and then the harpeji, then the chorus section and then a whole orchestral section rises over the scale change; You could close your eyes, lose track of the language and find yourself in the journey of a man biding all his strength from scratch, and struggling to his last breath to rise over his handicap. That’s simply how metaphoric the aural medium could be put to use. And I wouldn’t need Kutty Revathy’s middling lyrics at all here.
I got to admit here I haven’t listened to I love my Africa enough times to write on it. And by next week probably, there’ll be even more backlog coming in the form of Raanjhanaa. Despite that, it’s an amazing feeling when you are already listening to a great Rahman album, and have another one coming in very short time. Rahmaniacs understand this best.

#engaponaraasa..
..meanwhile, it gets cloudy and some light showers start spreading and I start running in the open road looking for shelter... whilst at 1:41 it gradually transforms into dense rain all over, and at 1:55 mark it starts pouring heavily with hailstones, like I was right under a water fall which keeps building up force when my lungs start gasping, only for it all to come to a standstill at 2:40. Pause. The heart stops. Silence. Peace. Divine. Then the drizzle starts again and I remember that I have to breathe. I breathe and start walking along.. #engaponaraasa..
rinse.. repeat.. #puyal

In Hindi "pari" means "angel." I think "sona" literally means "gold," but it is often used to mean "beautiful," particularly in Punjabi, as "soniye."
