This duet has enjoyable drum work (and that irritating "bomb" sound every now and then, don't know what is the reason, may be they showed the "colorful" bombs on screen).

The bomb sound is used when ever Rajni punches the punchbag using boxing Gloves in the song

BTW, Rajni istyle la sonna "Roja summa takkara irupanga " :lol2: :p

Super song from Uzhaippali and my most favorite in the movie & one of the top favorites in 90s IR songs. Love SPB's singing, sounded truly majestic, especially the modulation he does at end of the charanams before joining pallavi. .

Yes, esp along the line "vida mAtEn naanE adi mAnE oH" ! Only SPB possible!

The movie is a bummer if not for the comedy. Not much RK/Annan chemistry, except couple of scenes (American speech and the wedding scenes take the cake). Also known for that dialogue, "nEttu coolie, innikku nadigan, nalaikku...hahahaha".

I love this movie simple for RK's comedy :rotfl: , otherwise a useless movie!

Love the scene when RK speaks in inglees with visu! and the bit where annan says "Bilady indian" :rotfl3:

'ammA ammA enthan AruyirE' from uzhaippALi

I'm not sure whether this was a patti-thotti hit like the prior ammA song from the RK-P Vasu combo movie mannan. However, at the minimum, I've heard a few times on PA systems and I assume this had at least some popularity inside TN, given that the song is from a Rajini movie doing ammA thudhi pAdal. Add the wonderful singing by SPB & the typical pathos-style orchestration by rAsA.

Personally, though I don't have any emotional connect with this song, I can enjoy it much like any tablA based rAsA song in SPB's voice. I'll have to ignore the lyrics, obviously - that does neither touch the inside nor thrill the dhimAg. Quintessential example for mediocrity, who was the kavingar?

googling about the movie tells that this got released bypassing the disti's because of some ladAi & RK sought support from KH etc. Are there any chroniclers with more knowledge on the happenings of the time period? We often hear about the big stars working with / for the disti's to make money / get satisfaction / even compensating for their losses etc. What happened at this time to ruin such a long-cultivated relationship and how it got mended? Also, how did the movie do at BO?

Spb or not, uzhaippaali songs are a annoyance, barring muththirai ippOdhu. Kavitaji was a school mate of my uncle and hence, enjoyed unstinted support in our hosehold. Oh heck, we even accepted En Raththathin Raththame, which had a Kavitaji song I think. It was a measure of advancing age and thinking when I refused to dole out such support to MD Bharadwaj, class mate of another uncle of mine.
This was moved to Mano Digs post in the amaLi thumaLi. I think this is non controversial enough to remain here :)

nanRi, Param!

I guess we'll have a few smallies for the next few days before we hit the last song of the year 1993. I plan to have the vaLLi song as the last one for the year, which was reasonably popular. In between, there are a couple of Vijayakanth numbers and a couple of details-to-be-googled numbers :-)

For today, I'll do a Vijayakanth one that I'm very familiar with...

'indha veedu namakku sonthamillE' from Ezhai jAthi

The most famous song of this movie was 'adhO andha nathiyOram' - whose shooting spot was included in that famous IR doordarshan program that we talked about, with the beautiful Jayapradha doing rehearsal of dance with Prabhu Deva. That one is an awesome song that got made in 1991 itself, if one goes by that filming date. Possibly, the other songs too got recorded way back in 1991 but for some reason the movie got delayed. (HR may be able to provide the background as to why this Liyakat Ali Khan movie got so unusually delayed). That SJ number is one of my all-time-fav songs, in a very rAsA special format.

That way, this SPB number is quite melodious too and the smooth / free-flowing nature tells me that this was not a 1993 product but made sometime before, when rAsA was in a better mood. Had the movie come out in early 1992, the songs would have become much bigger hits IMO. However, they didn't get totally blocked from reaching the public :-) After the doordarshan show, I got to listen to the 'adhO andha nathiyOram' song for the second time on the airwaves out of a cassette shop in the oppaNakkAra st of Cbe, when coming out of the Andhra Bank opposite to that. I was really thrilled! It was followed by this 'indha veedu namakku sonthamillE' number :-)

That was not the only occasion - there were a few others when I had involuntarily listened to this song but the reason I so clearly remember this occasion is because I went with a colleague that day who urgently wanted money & it was one of those rare occasions when I took cash using a credit-card! (bank-la cc slip vachchu "azhuththi thEchchuttu" token koduppAnga)..."middle class Ezhai jAthi" guy, who promptly repaid the next month, with the 3% service charge the bank added.

There were a few others at workplace who weren't so kind to me though - one guy stylishly asked me one day 'do you have 1K to spare for a couple of days?' Unfortunately for me, there were 2 gAndhi padams in the pocket and soon after that guy was missing from work. My case was not bad though - there was this co-worker who co-signed for a 15K loan and used to cry each month when his pay was cut to repay that cheat's loan

One of my favorite SPB song for Rajini. This is my pick of the soundtrack and also one of my top most Rajini song, just for the situation alone. Superb composition by thalaivar. SPB's feel in singing 'Amma Amma' at the start speaks volume about his talent with those intricate sangathis. We can hear he is almost crying when singing that line. Right from the word 'go' Maestro blasts his WCM skills to the core. When SPB starts the pallavi, hear how Maestro slowly develops those violin gushes at the end of every line. Once the pallavi is over, we can hear that mesmerizing flute tremolo. This prelude portion alone is just enough for me to make multiple rewinds. With this piece alone we can assume what big is coming our way. The ambience with the tabla and santhoor when the pallavi is repeated gives the richness and grandness. Ist interlude has some breath-taking two WCM violin counterpoints. How he builds up the violin crescendo and takes a deep dive with veena and again build up the crescendo again with violins and cello is only Maestro can do. Listen to violin tremolos in the second interlude. If the first interlude was dominated by violins, second interlude is by flute in counter-mode with guitar. Ending with violins again. If this is not enough please listen to the post-lude for the ultimate roller-coaster ride. Greatest tribute to WCM trios. :notworthy:

SPB at this very singing best. Even when he sings every word like how it has to be sung, especially these following lines shook me like never before. 'thaayum neeye thavam irunthaayE' (why am I not dying listening to these two lines?) and 'vaaduthamma pillayE vaattuvatho ennai neeyE'. When he repeats the pallavi again after the first charanam with 'Amma amma' we can hear the cry for a short second before he starts with Amma amma. Legend of all time. :notworthy: The tune flows like a gentle river, with no hiccups and no discomforts. Very very sweet composition. Can't be better.

Can't describe anymore just to listen to these lines when SPB sings at the end.
pOdhum pOdhum (violin staccato)
pirinthathu pOdhum (violin staccato)
vaaduthamma piLLaiyE (violin blast)
vaatuvatho ennai neeyE (violin blast) ---> Ultimate surrender to his singing! :notworthy:

Coming to the lyrics, I am not seeing anything silly or glaring. I love these lines, very apt for bringing his mother to reality. Lyricist says, 'nalla kaalam pirakka unnai naanum arinthEn, unthan kangaL thirakka ingu paadal padithen'. What more can we expect? The following lines are also nicely written, especially the last line of first charanam; 'vaaduthamma piLLaiyE vaattuvatho ennai neeyE'. SPB's singing take these lines from wonderful to extra-ordinary.

Again these lines are captivating.
poovizhi Oram Or thuLi neerum
nee vadithaal manam thaangaathu
pon mugham konjam vaadi nindraalum
naan thudippen vali thaaLathu

pathu maasam sumanthu patta paadum maranthu
pillai chelvam pirakka aLLi kayyil edukka
thaayum neeye thavam irunthaayE
vaaduthamma piLLaiyE vaattuvatho ennai neeyE

My favorite Rajini song.! These songs make me wonder sometimes that how Maestro balances his compositions between Kamal and Rajini, without much participation from Rajini. He never assumes his job lightly. Sorry, it has become little big, very haunting song for me, can't resist posting about it.

One of many films where Sujatha plays estranged mother of Rajini, I like the song too, mainly because of the singing. The sequence is one of the more sober moments in this rather silly movie because of both of their acting.

'sOlai malai Oram' from villuppAttukkAran, with SJ

I presume this is another movie where Ramarajan got featured as a "-kkAran" (starting from the famous 'enga ooru pAttukkAran' that had the sweet 'sheNbagamE' and thrilling 'madhura marikkozhundhu' & later the terrific karagam). Obviously, villuppAttu is not the same as regular pAttu - it's essentially a form of kadhAi sollal in folk style, with paraparappAna musical portions thrown-in from time to time in course of the program. It would have been interesting to see Ramarajan doing that :-)

thiraippAdal also catalogs GA as the director. No wonder this SPB-SJ beauty happened :-) With a musically knowledgeable guy in the director's seat, with a decent ear to pick and choose good melodies, such songs are natural to come by. A beautiful melody sung by the top pair, with ear-friendly orchestration that can soothe one's body & mind. A song totally inside my personal zone of preference!

The movie possibly didn't make the impact like earlier mAttukkAran-pAttukkAran-AttakkAran movies and I don't know whether any more of such movies were made with the IR-GA-RR combo. If there were some more, we'll get them as we scan through the rest of the IR albums of 90's :-) I'm not familiar with the other SPB song in this album, 'kalai vANiyO' (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR4071'&lang=en)and will have to skip...the song sounds very sweet, however, with folk drums / flute and such delightful combo plus SPB's voice!

'Valiban' must probably be the Tamil version of 'Bobbili Raja'. While these songs were a big hit in Telugu, from what I gather they did not make much of an impact on the Tamil audience. Maybe because it was dubbed.

App,
Thanks for highlighting this song. This is again my pet song, will have to add to my pending list to post in detail. It is such a special song for me. Villu Paattukaaran soundtrack brings me lot of fond memories, especially this one, kalaivaaniyO, SJ's Ponnil Vaanam and Chitra's Vaanam Ennum.

App, the above song was not on hit parade because of the following reasons

1. cassettes and Cds were released along with film
2. nepolean and kushboo/mohini were acted for this song and the video did not give much impact like listening in audio.

I believe IR gave such a composition for the below reasons.

1. produced by panju Arunachalam
2. Directed by KR

One more point, this film has a song of Thirumagal un mugam kattum sung by Arunmozhi (spl note for sureshs65) . originally composed and released with veera audio, but was not there in film and they used in this film.

One of many films where Sujatha plays estranged mother of Rajini, I like the song too, mainly because of the singing. The sequence is one of the more sober moments in this rather silly movie because of both of their acting.

Yes, Like I mentioned before, IMHO Only SPB stands out in this song, when it comes to composition I feel it is done lightly by rAsA compared to "Amma endralaikatha" by KJY.

'marumakaLE marumakaLE' from enga mudhalALi, with KSC

It's another "wow, chithra chEchchi" song! While SPB is at his usual self and does the job effortlessly, chEchi had a lot of extra enthu packed into this song. Especially the way she sings the pallavi at the end of the first saraNam makes one feel so close to her. I really felt sad listening to this song during the weekend, as I've always assumed her (in my mind) as a real-personal-life-chEchi-and-not-just-a-celebrity; and, the "marumakaL" is no more  :choked throat:

Well, I very clearly remember hearing this song for the first time in a marriage function in south TN and instantly liked it (despite the not-so-great male chorus part). Since then, heard a few times on such occasions here and there, involuntarily. Definitely not a rage but the song had its moments south of Madurai I think, where IR's numbers continued to rule for a few more years -i.e. even after the ARR tsunami took over cities like Chennai & Cbe.

There's a funny connection to this song and my long-weekend-trip to Nayagara falls to meet three 'marumagaLs':lol2: (means girls of sis / cousin sis). While driving back, while one part of the mind was playing back this song, another part was also counting the number of "maru makaL"s (the direct ones themselves running into double digits and there are a lot more if one includes children of cousins; then add to that the children of many whom one has accepted as sisters...wow, it's going to be a very large number of real-life-marumakaLs).

Ofcourse, that's "old world" thinking. The modern society discourages marriages between relatives, stating some genetic-disorder theories. In addition, society is fast changing, with children choosing their own mates and considering such aththai-makaL-mAman-makaL kind of thinking as karnAtakam:-) Though it's a few a years away, the thought also flashed in my mind as to who'll marry our boy and become maru makaL? Will it be a relative as my wife hopes for or be a child of my friends that I hope for? Or, one of those foreign girls that "eeshify" the boy nowadays (welcomed with a realistic smile by me but shunned with absolute horror by my wife :lol2:)

maru makaL amaivadhellAm...:-)

'sakkarakkatti' from uLLE veLiyE, with SJ

Typical IR fun song with the most capable singers for such numbers. The pair possibly finished the song in an hour or so and moved on to the next assignment:-) With typical rhythm arrangements, funny flute sounds, some shehnAi additions here and there -well, it was a day-in-the-office for IR.

Thiraippadal says it was a Parthiban movie. That way, this is possibly the first ever Parthiban song that comes in this thread exercise. His most famous first movie - 'puthiya pAthai' with Seeta - didn't have IR and the few movies he did with IR after that didn't seem to have any SPB number that could resonate with me. ('thAlAttuppAda vA' had none,'poNdAtti thEvai' had none, 'unnai vAzhththippAdukiREn' had one that I've never heard...)

Finally, at last, an IR-SPB song from a Parthiban starrer, that too with the sweet SJ :-) Of course, I never knew this song was from a movie featuring him on-screen. It was mostly heard on buses and other PA systems in functions only, with no announcement of movie name  Neither did I care to ask those days. All that I know is many people in TN must have been familiar with this song.

That way, this makes into this thread :-)

'vaLLi varappORA' from vaLLi, with S N Surendar

This movie is supposed to be one of those few in 90's where Dilip (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dilip_(Tamil_actor)), who passed away recently, acted. He became famous with his role in VNS as a companion to Kamal and continued to act in a number of movies, typically as a companion of the main character. It's possible he did a similar role in vaLLi too.

This movie had the distinction of "story by Rajinikanth" - where he did a guest role too, possibly to help his 'manasAtchi' friend director Natraj. (Those who follow this thread knows him very well - as the director of 'anbuLLa Rajinikanth' & one who directed the Selvi iLamanadhu 'dog-duet' :lol2: That is, apart from his another nAi (chupra maNi) related role in moonRam piRai ).

We also get to feature a song with S N Surendar for the first time in this compilation I think - the singer of 'dEvan kOvil deepam onRu' in NPP and one who perhaps did quite a bit of track singing for SPB  He was more famous as the "voice of mike Mohan" during the 80's, when the actor had a few silver jubilee hits. Brother of actor Vijay's mom (she too had sung a few movie songs).

The line 'vaLLi varappORA' was frequently used in the ads for the movie on radio...not having heard the song much otherwise, I thought that was the first line for this song. Only years later I came to know of the 'sandhanam javvAdhu' business. The movie had the terrific 'ennuLLE' by Swarnalatha which was a lot more famous and stays evergreen even today via stage / TV / youtube. I don't know whether the movie did that well at BO but since it was a 'benefit match' with a top star taking part, people concerned would have made some money :-)

'ennavenRu solvathammA vanji avaL pErazhagai' from rAjakumAran

Sweet song with some nice string accompaniments. For some reason, I'm not a big fan of SPB's singing in this song (I think I've mentioned this before too in tfmpage). Some kOLARu that I cannot articulate. It didn't score well with me. Well, may be I wanted another 'enna saththam' but this wasn't up to that level...

The first time I heard this song was when visiting parents just around the time of the release of this album. It was coming out of a very nice sound system with huge box speakers (I think some marriage function or reception). The drum sounds as well the strings sounded like crystal and I loved listening to it so much that day! I even thought - hmmm, here comes the answer from rAsA to the competition :-) Unfortunately, IIRC, the album became an 'also-run' kind with no earth-shattering changes to the market.

It was another RVU product & he was perhaps the last director to colloborate for many successful albums with IR during his peak. The movie also had Meena who perhaps did her second movie with RVU, after ejamAn. Then there was Nadhiya, if one goes by wiki. Despite all these big names, the movie was not that much of a BO success I think.

Rajakumaran was iLayathilagam's100th film - as honest would point out, as with most 100th films except NT's and Vijayakanth's, it was not a big success. Def.ly a good album but didn't sound fresh in those days when freshwater fish was the much sought after item and was available aplenty elsewhere.

At least Ilaiyathalivali's maama did not spoil much songs like "the other" track singer ! :lol2:

'sithakaththi pookkaLE' from rAjakumAran, with KSC

Another sweet song from rAjakumAran, another KSC special. SPB doing a nice job too, as usual. Nice drum work, in addition to the great singing by this pair. I think it was around this time that the interludes weren't as exciting from IR as before. Like Plum mentioned in one of his posts about a recent rAsA album, they were mostly "functional". Not noisy or irritating or anything like that but somewhat lacking the extra-this-thing that we used to enjoy in rAsA songs from prior times.

This song is one example of such "functional" interludes that I didn't find them very exciting - not even the second one (typically rAsA saves some surprise elements for the 2nd interlude if the first sounded generic / functional etc). We can't blame it on the movie situation (duet kanavu scene, for e.g.) or the director or other team members for this phenomenon. Why? Because, that used to be the case even before but rAsA had very special stuff as interludes. Actually, those interludes were life-savers in many mAnE-thEnE songs in the past and most IRFs could "sing" them from memory. OTOH, even a "HC-post-92-IRF" may not be able to play from memory the sithagathi interlude...well, enough of my kuRai kooRal  (Possibly that's one reason fans started blaming "outsourcing" -read KR- with arrangements / interludes etc from this time period onwards )

I've heard this number frequently on radio / buses around the time of the movie's arrival. Like I said for the previous rAjakumAran song, this too wasn't possibly a patti-thotti hit. Just moderately popular to reach the ears of a "not-care-much-anymore-IRF", that's about it :-)

BTW, akaththi is a very tasty keerai to eat. OTOH, siththakaththi is one to which a lot of medicinal properties are attributed. The yellow coloured flower is lovely to look at and appears in bunches in the plant (shaped somewhat like avaraippoo which is purple colored)...IIRC, the flower was added to oil and heated, to make 'thailam'...for healthy hair :-)

i am sad to see that such a great song gets a sad writeup - I appreciate the honesty - but to dismiss the interludes and the song as one more "functional melody with functional interludes" - can place you among one of those "music carbon dating" reviewers.. Wonderful sudhdha Saaveri number this one is.. I have fond memories of this song as well as the movie as my maternal uncle was the first asst cameraman for this movie. He assisted Rajarajan and he had a lot of interesting stories to tell abt the movie. The story was altered to suit "100th movie" billing and became a regular masala - but Raja's music was the lone saving grace. This song was a particular favourite of mine - The way SPB started the charanams with an aalaap scaling up and swooping right into the charanam is a delight!! The staccato rhythms in the charanam are catchy and light nicely choreographed and always a delight to see Prabhu do some graceful double steps.
When i remember the song the one sound that plays in my mind's gramaphone is the "jalatharangam" type bell sounds nicely arranged in the interludes and BTW this is no pushover interlude as you make it out to be.. - not violin heavy, but captivating nonetheless..

'vanakkuyilE kuyil tharum kaviyE kavi tharum isaiyE' of Priyanka

What a lovely song! I never knew that this song is from that movie prior to this thread exercise  OTOH, I was very familiar with this sweetie, thanks to many involuntary listens. The melody and orchestration are sugary and SPB simply enjoys singing this number. For some reason, this song instantly connects me to the 'vanam' near Bavani / Mettur area.

It's possible that I've heard it for the first time on the hired taxi when travelling to Sakthi Sugars in Appakkoodal, for resolving a tech issue with our indigenously developed switching equipment. Our "all-India-service-manager" was in the car, an incessant talker, and despite him I could every now and then appreciate some new gems of songs that the carwAlA chose to play.

Personally, that talkative man was a gem -with phenomenal appetite for travel and was known to taking interest in all his 100's of subordinates etc; but, when one was in a mood to listen to some great music, he wasn't the one you desire to be around with :lol2: In any case, he was a big NT fan & TMS-PS-MSV-TKR fan too and once the 'neerOdum vaigaiyilE' song got played during that trip, he switched from whatever boring thing he was talking about, suddenly, to slAgiththufy the song / the scene etc etc for many minutes.

The most memorable episode with that man was in a restaurant@ Calcutta's park street during the early 90's - a place where there was live music (beautifully dressed, stunning looking singer). We were enjoying music & beer when some trouble broke out. A minor clash between individuals and some bloodshed, some running around. One should see how frightened he was -tOttal padhaRal - rushing to pay and wanted to run away. He was angry / mad at me that I was cool and was trying to pay with credit card

The song also reminds me of the bus trips that happened at times when travelling from Cbe-Bangalore (last minute work related trips with no train ticket possible) through the Sathyamangalam forest route. On one occasion, the driver stopped the bus in the middle of the jungle - with engine running - and rushed out. I was sitting in the front side and wondered what happened. Well, nothing serious - he had a "road-kill", a big rabbit, and went down to grab it and packed it carefully to deliver it to somebody en-route :lol2:

Sure, those were Veerappan times but I've never felt odd during any of those bus rides (not too many, though..typcially it was a train travel; if bus, the normal route was Cbe-Salem-Bangalore and not the Sathyamangalam-Kollekal route)...

Do you have any info related to this movie? Was it a success or some obscure one?

thiraippAdal does not list a hero but says 'Revathi' as the main cast :-)

Priyanka is a remake of Hindi movie Damini - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damini

IIRC, Damini was a big hit in the north.... It did not do that well in TN.

Vanakkuyile most probably takes the place of this song by "KK copycat" Kumar Sanu. The Hindi tune is good too, but Kumar Sanu is no comparison to SPB.

Read wiki plot: These kind of incidents happen at least once a week in NCR (Delhi) now.

I remember watching this film in theatre. Jayaram as Revathi's husband and Prabhu as her lawyer. It was quite popular for the court scenes and some embarrassing moments in the climax (especially the dialogues). It was not a hit, but quite known to most at that time. Good watch!

app,

As genesis and V_S pointed out, this was copy of the Hindi movie 'Damini'. It was a big hit in Hindi and established Raj Kumar Santoshi as a successful director of hard-hitting films. (He is the same one who did 'Lajja', which was a flop, where the BGM and one terrific song, 'kaun dagar' was provided by Raja) I think it was a moderate success in Tamil. Prabhu probably not able to match the hard hitting portrayal of the drunken lawyer which Sunny Deol did in Hindi.

Not only does Kumar Sanu not match up to SPB, the Hindi tune is also nowhere close to 'vana kuyile'. Those were the pathetic days of Hindi film music and you got such fairly routine stuff there. Raja's tune on the other hand is an extraordinary creation. In the Kalaignar TV program on Raja songs which ran for a few weeks as a serial, Raj, of Ragaranjani blog, deconstructs this song both in terms of its raga (based on Lalitha) and the complex tala. He talks in detail about the charanam and how Raja comes up with such complicated beats and blends it so effortlessly back into the pallavi. Unfortunately there is no youtube of that program available, else it would be very educative.

SPB is superb in this song and what can I say about the tune. Absolutely 'Raja only possible' type tune. Now have to go and listen to this again :)

I disagree with genesis' comment - "KK copy cat" Kumar Sanu. he was far far from being a KK copy cat. if he really did copy KK, Sanu would have sounded much better!

Damini was a good film. A welcome break from the crop of films that came from Bollywood back then. Sunny Deol was effective in it and so was Amrish Puri (superb performance in negative role).

digression ends//

Vanakuyile is a fantastic composition and very unusual actually. The pallavi lines are so tricky. Kudos to SPB for pulling it off so well. It is not at all easy to sing this composition (particularly the pallavi portions). and hats off to ilaiyaraaja for doing something different instead of a straight standard lalitha raagam exposition! I am not knowledgeable enough to comment on tala pattern, but the tune is definitely loaded with complexities.

'sriranga ranganathanin pAtham' from mahAnadhi, with Shobana & UR

For a very engaging discussion on the movie, please visit this KH thread in TF forum, for about 20+ pages, starting with the post below:
http://www.mayyam.com/talk/showthrea...l=1#post859340 (http://www.mayyam.com/talk/showthread.php?7754-Sindhanai-Selvar-Dr-Kamal-HaasaR-favourite-movies-scenes-2&p=859340&viewfull=1#post859340)

One should not miss exquisite posts by great connoisseurs of films, P_R & equanimus, who both consider this movie among the best in TF! Also, there are some nice discussions by Venkkiram / Plum / Roshan / Joe / radiochandra / SKV / V_Sji, among others.

So, please first go to that thread, read all the wonderful posts / analysis etc, before reading the routine material below
(Disclaimer : If you choose to watch the Kolkota youtube linked in that thread and keep crying inconsolably, adhukku nAn poRuppu alla )

I've mentioned in that thread that I'm not a fan of the movie's songs but this one is an obvious exception, an extraordinary melody and some great singing! Starts with a child's singing - who has the mahAnadhi adaimozhi permanently fixed to her name now, as mahAnadhi Shobana - followed by UR and finally our thread star arrives for the second saraNam appreciating the Kaveri mahAnadhi. To put it very simply, the song has to be enjoyed listening and not by reading / writing about!

I remember reading the vikatan review of this movie, giving great marks and was thrilled about another gem for the KH-IR combo. Though the film didn't do uthirippookkaL-like-biz, because the audience taste has changed so much in 90's, it was still a commerical positive one. But with extraordinary critical acclaim! (Have you read the pages in the quoted link yet? If not, please go there).

I didn't get a chance to watch the movie until a couple of years back. (I'm glad I watched that rented dvd alone when family members went to India; on some scenes, was crying uncontrollably). Can never watch it again - romba bAthikkappadakkoodum enRa bayam! That said, even during the first watch, I did FF the pongal / pEykaL songs  I don't know whether the songs were patti-thotti hits in TN (actually I've not even heard the SPB-SJ duet prior to this thread exercise and chose to skip it ; is it even there in the movie? I don't recall - if it was there, possibly I FF'ed it as well). However, I definitely know that this song was well-received in TN and personally heard it many times on radio.

vAli was possibly very happy to write this song, being originally from Srirangam & having 'Ranga' in his name also. rAsA had this Srirangam connection too - of donating for the construction of one stage of the rAja gOpuram. The construction was going on during my college days and rAsA conducted some stage programs as fund raiser. (So, it's a myth that rAsA never did stage shows when he was at the peak of his career)! The other celebrity who quickly comes to mind, when discussing about Srirangam, is Sujatha (again having 'Ranga' in his name and had this place as native, similar to vAli).

The producer of the movie was 'poLLachi modhalALi' S A RajkaNNu, who produced BR's first two movies -16 vayadhinilE & KPR. And the director was Santhana Bharathi, who started his career co-directing panneer pushpangaL with P Vasu, after serving as an assistant to Sridhar. Many believe that he did only 'executive' role, as KH was the main / total brain behind the movie. In any case, both the producer & director must be proud to be associated with this product!

From that Kamal thread, one comes to know that the famous writer rA-ki-Rangarajan was part of the story-discussion-team of mahAnadhi. That adds another 'rangan' to the gOshti :-) While he was generally an ok kind of writer, his contribution to the success of Kumudam by colloborating with the editor during the magazine's peak days is immeasurable!

Actually, the most popular (and my favourite) aspect of Kumudam thru out 70's & 80's was arasu badhilkaL. Though people nowadays give total credit to S A P Annamalai ("editor") for arasu badhilkaL, those days it was rumoured to be like this :

அ - அண்ணாமலை ('a' of arasu was first letter of the name of S A P Annamalai)
ர - ரங்கராஜன் ('ra' was first letter of rA ki Rangarajan)
சு - சுந்தரேசன் ('su' was first lettler of ja rA Sundaresn)

These were the pillars of Kumudam those days, when it was youthful / brilliant / interesting!

Yes, totally misunderstood. But that's how Kumar Sanu got famous. T-series released tons of "dubbed" songs in 1980s with Anuradha Paudwal (replacing LM) and Kumar Sanu (replacing KK).

Thaipongalum song FF-aa? One of my most favorite Chitra renditions. And those bit songs (one sung by SPB himself - anbaana thaayai vittu, wrongly credited in TP), each one of them is lovely. So much feel and soul (KH/IR/SPB). Those songs >>> Sriranga renganaathanin for me. Love the charanam portions in this song though.

Sollaatha raagangaL ennenna was not picturized but the main melody was used as a BGM piece in the film. Sweet little song.

So, with that good bye to Kamal from this series :-(

App, sticking my neck out here since several readers here are hardcore fans of cinema and connoisseurs of art....I had this habit too but cut it out a few years ago on realising that after portraying all this in the reel world, the people behind the movie will laugh their way to the bank while human suffering in real life is often several times more tragic, far more harsh and often without a solution in sight.

After hearing from a couple of insider friends(and books) what the industry is really like, I have absolutely no tears to shed for the cine world.

All IMVHO :)

Nice to read about 'Vanakkuyile song' with your vanam vazhiyaaga pona bus prayaanangal. Surely a right song for long journeys. Soothing for long night drives too. :)

But the movie, not so much a likeable movie for me. Despicable , extended scenes about rape, and the horrid court room scenes..Seesh! :hammer:

Shreeranga ranga nathanin' a perfect song for a beautiful morning. I often listen to this on early mornings with birds chirping, as the sun gently rises, and the morning mist.....lovely.....

Actually that's the reason behind the depressed feel. (nAnum unga mAdhiri thAn, no extra consideration for sOgam/sugam of celebrities.)

BTW, I watched the song posted by genesis - nice! Then, mustered up courage to watch the 'kanavil uLaRal' youtube whose link came up.

While Poornam was a wonderful companion in that Kolkota scene, here Suganya rombappAvam :-( Absolutely no match to Kamal who is so much of an uNarchchippizhambu.

Also, not so much shock during this view, for the most part!

'mAdathththilE kanni mAdaththilE' from veerA, with SL

mahAnadhi ended KH-IR-SPB hits in this exercise. With the two Veera songs, the same will happen to the RK-IR-SPB combo. Two of the most glorious combos that happened during the individual careers of all the four men concerned, without question!

I chose this duet to be #399, just to enable a SPB solo hitting the #400 spot for this exercise. Otherwise, there's nothing to choose between both the songs - both are gems & equal in my personal rating! (My most fav in the album, however, is 'malaikkOvil vAsalil' and it has Swarnalatha / Mano)

SPB scores 4's & 6's through out the song and SL bats hard to catch up in the other end, and yes, she does a very commendable job too! rAsA freaks out in the rhythm section, putting together some terrific cocktail there, in addition to a thuLLal melody! Like 'ada machcham uLLa' of chinna veedu, this song definitely needs a second-by-second analysis by V_Sji, to appreciate all details :-)

I've seen this movie on a "computer CD" in India and later on a VHS bought from Devon ave of Chicago - but now don't remember this song's picturization at all  Is it Meena or Roja? In any case, it was just another fun-duet on screen I think, typical Rajini shEshtais and not something that was outstanding and gets recalled quickly (like 'thenmadurai vaigai nadhi'). While my connect with the movie / videos isn't great , the case is different with the album! The first time I heard this album was during a very interesting bus journey!

I've already read about the album being very successful for IR and there had been a few news items about Rajini doing the role of a singer, 'konjikkonji' shown as a "competition song" etc. I wanted to get the album in hand but due to frequent travels, it had to wait and I didn't get until a couple of months later. At that time, there was this colleague's marriage in interior nilgiris that I had to go to (pazhangudi inaththavar) and I ended up in Ooty (travelling from Mysore, via Gudalur) on a winter 6 AM when the temp was close to freezing.

And I realized that the marriage invitation was missing in my bag :-)

'konjikkonji alaigaL Ada' of veerA

ok, we have this Brian Lara song - the quadruple century!

Quite a significant personal milestone for me - of posting about 400 hit songs of SPB-IR in this thread! While it called for some effort every now and then (to get facts, find timeslot to type the post etc), it had been such a thoroughly enjoyable ride! Longer than a year and now close to the end of the ride...and I'm quite satisfied that me could show a little bit of gratitude for what immense amounts of pleasure the two greats of TFM have showered upon us for decades!

Now, this is a nice, worthy song for this slot, being one of the biggest IR-SPB hits during 90's when rAsA was slowly moving away from the TFM limelight!. That is, after 15 years of total dominance of the TFM market - unlike anyone prior or after, in speed / prolificity / numbers / % share / quality / innovations / trend-setting / name anything. And through out, SPB was a wonderful companion, singing for at least 30-40% of the hit songs of rAsA (either solo or with others)!

So, a "competition-winning-on-screen" konjikkonji (felt like match-winning in the market), is the song for this celebration :-)

Now, to continue with my blA-blA on how I first heard this album, here comes a few more paragraphs (separation like this allows bored readers to skip and miss nothing relevant to the thread :-) )...

That I didn't have the wedding card, added to the chill of the morning at Ooty bus stand!

Locating someone in a new place, without having the correct address, is an art  Current gen that lives with GPS etc may not appreciate this much but such skills were necessary even in 90's. (I remember me & a +2 class mate landing in Nagerkoil in 1981 summer at 5 AM and waking up a bunch of teachers here and there in one area to locate the home of the person whom we were supposed to visit - who happened to be a teacher living in that area ).

Well, I knew that the Kundah area (Hydel power plant near Ooty) bridegroom's father was a top official in a TN state gov dept. So, after taking a hot bath in a hotel near Ooty bus station, went to that gov office to try my fortune:-) Well, there were some people (security / watchman kind, on a Sunday morning). They not only gave me the name of the village where this officer is from but also clear directions as to which bus to take, where to get down etc.

Well, like 'patta kAlilE padum', the right bus that goes exactly to that pazhangudi village was only a couple of times a day and the next one was many hours later. kalyANam sAppAdu ellAm adhukkuLLa mudinjidum! So, took another bus that went "in that direction" and it dropped me off in a place from where I had to trek my way in the malai arasi (it was chill, windy, steep climb for about 30 minutes or more), to attend the wedding - that was unlike any I attended before. (Folk dance, serving of liquor in pandhi itself - vAzhai ilaiyil chORu plus alcohol in steel glass  I carefully declined madhu, just cautious about hoot tragedies in situations like that, even though the groom & his dad were officezhs).

Well, on my way back, the bus had music system! And that's when I got to hear veerA! The first time listen of a much talked about rAsA score, after some thrilling part of a day, was such a delight! There were a few others in that bus who were returning from the marriage as well, to go to Ooty. So, there was some nice conversation about konjikkonji right there!

groucho,

That particular scene in Telugu brought down the house. Brahmanandam shouts 'Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa' there and the theater exploded. After that, the Tamil one was a bit diluted. Overall Tamil film had a bit more finesse compared to the Telugu one. Raghavendar Rao, who directed the Telugu film, worked on a one line agenda of trying to expose Ramya Krishnan and Meena to the maximum possible level. Maybe due to that the movie was a great hit in Telugu.

That was the only song where Roja looked pretty.
aarmoniya pottiya kooda ivvlo styleaa pidikka mudiyumaa? yes appdingraar super *.
Sendhiloda kavalai kalandha thabala - is one more serious but funny thing in the song.
I was crazy about the visuals that Suressh krishna had built up for this song - verum medai paattaa adhai treat pannaadhadhu
great.
one more thing - this movie and mahanadhi were one of the earliest thamizh movies to use "AVID" editing.
AVID enables smoother scene transitions - that could make the viewer believe that a tracking trolley shots arranged back to back flowed as one
single shot.
So in this song when the visual of Rajini playing harmonium in the open field is shown in a tracking trolley shot, a tree blocks and immediate cut out was Rajini playing harmonium in the auditorium and Roja snaps out of her imagination - The AVID cuts in between both the shots was nicely done and Raja would have punctuated the transition with a quick synth key and guitar half notes (I believe) (I should give more credit to Suressh Krissna here for complementing a beautiful point in the song with a nice edit). A similar scene transition is employed in Mananadhi's Shrirangaranga - song when the camera tracks the Krishnaswamy family walking in the temple from behind the pillars and when it goes behind one final pillar, the shot is cut and the next shot opens with them walking out - nicely shot, edited and put together.. Apart from the music and lyrics, these picturisation aspects also make these two songs stand out.

'muththoo maNi muthu maNi' from atharmam, with SJ

This is one of those songs that I've not heard at the time of arrival but only during recent years...via this "CD from a relative who is not an IR fanatic" route and thus consider it to be a reasonably known song in TN.

I like the singing of SPB & SJ in this song. Also the nice melody & soft-on-ears kind of orchestration. The lines leave a lot to be desired, though. (especially the dhAvaNi-lAvaNi thingy is soththakkadalai feeling). thiraippAdal says "Murali-Ranjitha-Nasar" movie and I don't know anything else about this (possibly) obscure movie.

BTW, there's a Malayalam movie with a very close sounding name 'atharvam' (totally different meaning - atharmam = injustice / unrighteous etc ; atharvam = atharvaNa vEdham, the fourth one after rig/yajur/sAma and supposedly involve magic / healing). It was a Mammooty film with silukku & IR. I've seen the movie but don't remember anything now  Except ofcourse the song 'puzhaiyOraththil', which is a terrific number there (I've heard a TFM song in the same melody but don't remember which movie etc).

One feels sorry for Murali every time a film of him gets discussed - such a young age he died. So did Pandiyan. Two heroes whose first TF got released during my college days, both hits, with IR music.

This is the only song that I've heard exclusively only on thiraippAdal and still post in this thread. Also, Devaraagam informed us that this was not a 'patti-thotti hit' in TN. I'm still posting it because many hubbers - including Sureshji - posted that this was reasonably popular in TN those days. May be among IR fans only but then that itself was a very huge group in TN - even in 90's - and hence such a beauty (all superlative adjectives applicable) of a song cannot be ignored :-)

By 1994, people got accustomed to the habit of buying 'recorded cassettes' (original or fake didn't matter) and recording centers were perhaps on the wane. However, tea shop music / bus music continued with assorted MDs (ARR / Deva / IR). Unfortunately, I didn't get to hear this number during the visits to TN those days. Neither did it get played in the TN-er joints in Palakkad.

Some Kayar director. Some Ramki hero. What else?

Sweet proof that IR was so non-discriminatory :-)

Are you sure ?
when was "Magaleer mattum/Rasukuty" released ?

I think you have missed Rasa magan (Prashanth /Shivaranjani) film, it had 2 wonderfull songs by SPB

- Anju kajam kanchi pattu
- Vaikasi velli kizhama thaanE

No personal connect with all these songs you mentioned Param, and yes they are all 1994-ers.

I've definitely read about him but haven't watched any of his movies.

Also, IIRC, someone has posted about how he was quite an influential person and supposedly "worked / fought" for Bhava's NA...

'vazhi vidu vazhi vidu vazhi vidu en dEvi varukiRAL' from pAttuppAda vA, with IR

We got one more song where both the thread nAyakarkaL sing together :-) By no stretch of imagination this could have been a patti-thotti hit in mid-90's, considering the huge changes in the music scene by then. This particular year had Deva & ARR hitting it out with Rajini & bagging most biggies while rAsA had to live with relatively second grade projects. With the only exception of sathi leelAvathi where KH played a fun (and possibly benefit) game.

However, the circumstances under which I heard this song for the first time has led me to believe that the song was at least mildly popular at the time of its arrival. Why? Because I heard it in a Cbe bus in the year 2000 for the first time  So, the fact that at least some people liked it when it arrived -to a point that it survived amidst such a music scene for a few years- forces me to include the number in this exercise. (As I write this, I feel sad too - that one has to look for reasons as to how a SPB-IR song became popular in TN  That way, not a song for my personal playlists.)

Just briefly - my new indica, when driving back from the dealer after the first service, was hit by a bus on the Trichy road / Ukkadam bye-pass road junction, and was almost a total wreck, not drivable.

Well, after police towed the vaNdi to their Singanallur station along with the seized bus (don't know what happened to the bus / buswAlA afterwards), I had to catch a city bus from "station" to go back to the bus station (to head back to Palakkad home). That's when I heard this song for the first time on a rainy day, travelling standing. The bus had a terrific music system and the song kind of calmed down my agitated mind, given the horrible circumstances.

That way, unforgettable song :-)

p.s. The car got repaired & salvaged later by fantastic Cbe mechanics for around Rs 80K. Unlike here in amerikkA, one had to pay from packet that money to take the car & bills were "reimbursed" by insurance only after a month or so...I don't know if they've changed now but that was the insurance procedure those days. OTOH, here, one is liable to pay only the deductible, that too only if at fault. Otherwise, the other driver's insurance - because he was at fault - has to pay the deductible.

sengamalam = sem + kamalam

sem (semmai) means red color (it also means good / right etc)
kamalam is lotus (kamala hasan)

In this context, it possibly compares the lips of the girl to the petals of red lotus :-)

'chinnakkaNmaNikkuLLE vandha sellakkaNNanE' of pAttuppAda vA

KSC portion comes only briefly in this mainly-SPB version (possibly there's a "flash-back-recall-of-mom"). I've frequently heard the solo-KSC version (where else, in buses) that is awesome and possibly the SPB version had some air time too but do not recall the AlAp stuff in the beginning at all. Again, much like the vazhi vidu, this is not possibly a patti-thotti hit but moderately popular in TN.

Now I also remember the KSC version getting featured in a 'thAlAttu' filled post on a blogspot that had the MP3's of many IR-thAlAttu songs. (Long back we posted the link in one of the threads and briefly discussed too, can't easily find it now).

veLLi nilavE veLLi nilavE from nandhavanaththEru, with UR

Sweet singing by SPB in this RVU movie song. Possibly written by RVU as well. Unlike his earlier ventures with Karthik (kizhakku vAsal / ponnu maNi), I think this one failed miserably in the BO. I'm not aware of any RVU-IR combo movies that came after this (worse, not even read about any movie directed by RVU thereafter. I've only read about him in political news reports - campaigning for ADMK in elections / criticizing VV who was on a rampage against Vijayakanth etc).

Interestingly, while I don't know how this song from a flop movie fared inside TN, I was sweetly surprised by a small "idlikkadai" kind of hotel in Palakkad who used to play this regularly :-) Based on that & the reasonable web presence of this number, I concluded that this can be included in this exercise. BTW, that idlikkadai was a saviour during one of those months when wife was holidaying with the child at her mom's place. The idlees weren't like flower or comparable to the aNNapoorNA kinds. Neither the dOsais were of appreciable standard. Also, like every Palakkadan place, the sAmbAr was horrible and simbly avoided. (Sorry to say this, it's a punishment to taste sAmbAr in 99% of restaurants in Kerala - there were only 1 or 2 rare exceptions in my >15 yrs experience).

But, that kuttikkadai fellow made awesome chutney!

It wasn't the sophisticated "ketti" type but watery, even slightly reddish in color (due to the use of vara miLakAi and not pachcha miLakAi). However, whatever extra ingradient(s) they added (onion? inji? pooNdu? puLi? something else? Could never guess) gave that special taste (mouth waters now :lol2:). One cannot simply "touch" the chutney and eat. The idlees had to be immersed in it at least half a minute and then eaten :-)

The veLLi nilavE song, like that break-fast food, was not instantly catchy to me but over a period of time I started liking / relishing it and SPB is the main reason!

would place this song in one of the best SPB songs in 90s list. The song heals you and the healing spirit is in the voice of SPB - The entire orchestration and arrangement are done as if they are caressing the words with a peacock feather. andha feel eppdi vandhadhu - adhu magic..

With the arrival of Ajith and Arvind Samy, I think Karthik was loosing his "lover-boy" image....

Talking about RVU, this blog post is quite interesting material, with some nice titbits :

(indha vishayaththila NT-kkum namakkum orE taste :-) )

Our house owner's son in Coimbatore had a cassette filled with "Nenjukkulle" song from Ponnumani. (He was couple of years senior to me and IIRC had completed college and looking for job at that time). He used to play the entire cassette multiple times every day.

Today RVU is remembered only for his movie songs with IR. He has not left much memories as a director.

Lovely song, wonderfull singing by SPB! I remember this film. AFAIK it was not a hit, even though Karthik does a neat job.
