I actually like "pallikkoodam pogalama", slightly restrained SPB-SJ-IR erotica. Only IR could make a Vijayakanth-Kanaga erotic song "exciting", if you see what I mean ;-). BTW, thanga thalaivi Devikavukku ipdi oru poNNu :(

I think you are not aware about the craze for VK amoung girls at tha time . I knew there are ladies as VK fans mainly for his mannerisms. Karuppu kalvan pola

Sorry for being such a pest. Per Thiraipaadal.com Puththam Pudhu Kaalai is by Gangai Amaran. I could not find lyricist for the above 2 songs from any websites. Can you please cite your sources?

idhu oru nilAkkAlam sounds more like Vaali.
Ayiram thAmarai mottukkaLE may be VM. I have a feeling you decided based on one word often found in VM songs.

Sureshji - If IR keeps his politics away from films how can you explain this?
- IR declined to do "Hey Ram" for its controversial story line. (later he did anyway)
- IR declined to work in "Iruvar". Mani was professional, he thought IR would be better than ARR for this movie.

I been around here from 2002(?). Me and eden had same IP address for some time, though we never met. Actually genesis name is inspired from eden.

tik tik tik's 'nERRu indha nEram' was by KD & 'idhu oru nilAkkAlam' by VM as seen in the disk those days. It can probably be verified by watching the movie on web for credits.

'putham puthukkAlai' was a follow-up for 'pon mAlaippozhudhu' IIRC. In fact, one of the reasons for me to regard VM as incomparable in 'iyaRkai varNanai' songs :-)

'ennaiththottu aLLikkoNda' from unnai ninaichchEn pAttuppadichchEn, with SL

Very interesting song where Swarnalatha sounds quite mature and sings the first half of the song and SPB comes in like an "interruption", smiles in his customory way and enjoys singing a lovely folk melody. If no background is given about this song, I would have automatically assumed it to be a Ramarajan song as the typical elements (sweet flute, strings, rhythm arrangement) are all present.

In addition to the folkishness, there's also slight 'classical' feel in the song overall - some gamakams and possible use of a rAgA could be the reason. SPB tries to lighten that feel with some laughter here and there but one cannot help but think that this has got to be a toughie to sing  eppadi irundhAlum, very sweet on the ears, this number!

Web resources say this is a Karthik movie directed by Guru Dhanapal. Other than that, no pre-knowledge on this movie. The song is evergreen in mind, however. 100% bus-heard-song. ippadi eththanai eththanai inbam vaiththAy rAsA!

What a beauty!! I just love this song!!

I watched this movie in a lazy afternoon in cable TV (2-3 movies per day - no channels; latest in Kovai during early 90s). Karthik has 2 முறை பெண்கள் . Elder played by Sasikala and younger played by Monisha (nakakshathangal fame). Karthik-Monisha like each other. In a bizarre accident Monisha dies (locks herself in a big box). Sasikala "corrects" Karthik for rest of the movie (junk part of the movie). The story line is basically "inspired" from MTK.

The heroine Monisha actually died in car accident shortly afterwards :(

'mAnam idi idikka' from unnai nenachchEn pAttuppadichchEn, with SJ

Another sweet SPB-SJ duet from this year. The second song from this movie that I'm familiar with (bus listens again). I wasn't sure whether this was as popular as the ennaiththottu aLLikkoNda but based on the other posts from this thread, one can assume that this was a moderate hit as well.

The song has a slight 'madhura marikkozhundhu' feeling and that's another reason I assumed these songs must have been from some Ramarajan movie. Once again, this song too has a slight 'rAgA' feeling. The singer pair handles with such an ease and precision that one gets such a soothing and comfort feel when listening to the number. What a big difference between listening to such songs and some recent TF songs where it's such a misery to listen to the singers...

Of course, the lyrics are so-so and in line with majority of the songs those years. Nothing to stand out or stay in memory. The sweet melody, enjoyable orchestration and high quality singing made sure that such songs can be enjoyed years after. And brings back the country side of TN instantly in one's mind - the sevvaraLippoo thOttam is the one that comes to my mind whenever some grAmarajan-kind number gets played.

One of my aththais (appAvin akkA) had a nice thOttam that had these plants lined up, apart from manjal kizhangu, avarai, mochchai and the likes. I had spent a few pongal times there and mAttuppongal was a big thing in their home (bulls with sendhoorappottu were forced to eat pongal, ootti viduvAnga ). I've worked with my cousins a few times in collecting the sevvaraLippoo which was packed and sent to market - though I've never seen it getting used anywhere in their homes or even villages. Was it for export or use elsewhere - I don't know...

While thiraippAdal places 'meerA' as a 1993 movie, most other websites (wiki, rakkamma etc) say it got released in 1992. I don't know for sure about the timing. Do hubbers know for sure which year this PC Sriram movie got released?

I think 1992 is the worst year so far in this compilation i.e. in the # of hit songs missed out.

It will be more or less like this in the case of next few years. This year was also significant because of continued hectic personal life - more official travels & at one point wife becoming travel-unworthy (pregnant) and many other family occasions / functions etc.

Part of the year was also spent away from both TN & Kerala (AP / WB for many weeks). I heard the rOjA songs for the first time in Calcutta (now Kolkota) when the service engineer - a Cbe boy who shared the hotel room with me - got the cassette. We both used to enjoy watching MTV at the hotel room those weeks (Guns & Roses' November Rain was played frequently / Khaled's Didi was another that was immensely enjoyed).

The first rOjA song that the boy slAgiththufied and made me listen was 'rukkumaNee rukkumaNee' (yuck) and me, already a nay-sayer because MR left IR, couldn't like the album at all. It's not a favourite till this day. OTOH, gentleman songs were such a big hit with me :-)

Oh butterfly from meerA, with AB

Recently this song was on repeat mode in the home audio system, much to the irritation of me & my wife. It was because the 6 year old forced it upon us for many hours and allowed nothing else to be listened. Not just that, even when we require 'no noise time', the player will be unexpectedly turned on by remote & go on with this song in repeat mode  Thankfully, she got over it and replaced with 'sun sahibA sun' of RTGM which was more listenable to me on repeat mode :-)

I liked this butterfly song when it arrived, it was such a delight to listen in Cbe buses that had nice sound systems that highlighted the 'tish-tish' high hat sound at high decibels! I still can enjoy this song once or so in a month, may be a few more times too. But cannot keep this on repeat mode - not "that kind" of a song. It was possibly trendy at the time of arrival and SPB excels in the number with his stylish singing. (AB's battar-flai kills it totally, however).

The ace camera guy P C Sriram directed this movie that had Vikram & Aishwarya d/o Lakshmi. This song looks nice on screen. The movie failed to click at the BO I think and Vikram had to wait for a few more years before getting a big break. As per wiki, the current sensation K V Anand (ayan / kO) worked as an assistant to PC during the times of meerA. Also Jeeva - who is no more & did successful movies as 'unnAlE unnAlE' - worked with PC then. A great team of men with lenses and this movie should have been a delight to the eyes on big screen. Those who watched the movie can highlight them (me didn't get a chance).

Sureshji - If IR keeps his politics away from films how can you explain this?
- IR declined to do "Hey Ram" for its controversial story line. (later he did anyway)
- IR declined to work in "Iruvar". Mani was professional, he thought IR would be better than ARR for this movie.

genesis,

I think we have differing interpretations on what professionalism means and therefore the confusion. According to me, a professional need not and should not accept every job that comes his / her way. The reason for rejecting a job can be personal, political or professional but the prerogative of rejecting lies with the professional. So I have no issues with Raja rejecting films on whatever basis (he doesn't like the story, doesn't like the hero's face, doesn't like director or just doesn't want to do the movie.) Any reason is good enough and as I said that is the professional's right.

What I would construe as unprofessional is if you take up a job and then let your political views or religious views or any other views interfere with the film. For example, once Raja took over 'Hey Ram' he gave it his best. He did not ask Kamal to change scenes or change ending or some such thing because it is against his beliefs. He just went ahead and gave some outstanding BGM and a song which will easily be a lifetime achievement for many other music directors, 'isaiyil thodangudhamma'.

Hope that clarifies what I meant by professionalism.

app,

I can say that I welcomed Rahman with open arms :) Staying at Hyd and not knowing much about the TF industry, I was unaware of Mani-Raja fallout. Infact I was not aware that Mani was making 'Roja'. So it came as a big surprise to us when it got released. And we loved the songs. Mani was our favorite director then and I didn't mind him going to a new director. For the two to three years, all Rahman tapes were bought and listened to, even before the movie was released, even including 'Super Police' (Telugu) (which Rahman himself may want to forget.) 'Thiruda Thiruda', 'Kadhalan', 'Bombay' etc. were heard much before the film was released. As I kept on listening, slowly the fascination for those songs dropped as well as fascination of Maniratnam's movies. (Nothing to do with him not working with Raja.) But that is a different subject altogether.

I am also surprised, as others, that you haven't heard 'kozhi koovum'. Thought it was fairly popular.

Sureshji, genesis & baroque,

Reg. rOjA, it was some kind of 'pOrALi' mentality in me those days :-) Was a battle-hardened-HCIRF for many years and all these three (MR-KB-ARR) looked like the three villains of masAlA movies against a hero  Absolutely no objectivity possible there :-)

That it was highly successful, got NA etc only added to the woes. Felt like the Miandad last ball sixer  (One may say it was gutsy, phenomenal, brilliant batting etc but how many Indian cricket fans loved Miandad that day? Actually, in the hub, I'm most probably alone in this :-) Most hubbers possibly take this as one of those 'manappiRazhvu' thingies...

...but every time I hear 'inji iduppazhagA' where IR gave vacation to the bass guitarist, such feelings haunt me!

That was at the time when the "opposite" camp came with terrific bass sounds and made people believe this was the first time such sounds got invented!

How many times one is forced to read kids on the net -who've never heard 'uRavenum puthiya vAnil' and the likes in life - call IR a 'tablA guy'! There were many younger co-workers too in my then workplace who thought IR didn't know that a thing called bass-guitar existed  Endless arguments with such fellows in mid-90's brought me back the days of the MSV fans of late 70's / early 80's who had endless arguments with me calling IR a 'dappAnguththu' MD

The tfmpage.com "single-handedly" helped bring back IR some of the deserved glory among next gen, IMSO! Only after its arrival HCIRFs had some relief, vent to their feelings, IMHO. In addition, in my case, tfmpage.com helped a lot in becoming more "objective" towards other MDs (regardless of the fact that I enjoyed a number of ARR albums during the 90's)...

That Raja's music underwent a great change in the 90s is a definite fact and it seemed to go (atleast at the time) opposite to what was cool. Only now I am making some sense was what he was trying then and that too I haven;t understood completely. When I get time I want to open a thread for Raja's songs post 90s, and year by year compare it with songs of other MDs which came out the same year, and try understand what went through his mind during those days. A very tall order indeed but must be done. There are lots and lots of gems hidden there.

seekkiram Arambinga :-)

My case, as explained, is like patriotic India-Pak match watcher, who blames batsman / bowler / selector / manager /umpire / pitch / wind / everything when their team loses  Applies to both sides :-)

appattamAna fans mentality, that too after their fav "winning" a prior war and remaining king for a decade (occupying the first top 10 slots with nearest competition only after, far behind) and then suddenly getting "defeated", not entirely due to lack of veeram / talent / Ayudham etc but due to various other factors...so, the irritation gets redirected to pitch / weather etc (read DM)

For e.g., take the case of NA for rOjA - all years prior, "innovation" "commercial reach" etc where not factors but only "classical or not" was the factor. rAsA was denied NA for many years for his phenomenal scores while some weak classical album getting it. Now, all of a sudden, the rules got changed and this new music is hailed as the best ever in India while nobody in NA talked about nizhalgaL or Johny those days :-)

(The BM vote thingy and all are only recent knowledge; also, after coming to tfmpage.com don't care for NA anymore)

Plum :-)

I guess DM should be watched on big screen for the right impact.

TV / computer ellAm sarippadAthunnu thONudhu.

However, as a stand alone music album, it cannot occupy a great slot in the overall rAsA list...not in the first couple of hundreds, IMO.

There's another SPB song in meerA - pani vizhum mAlaiyil - idhuvum with AB, but never heard before - skip.

So, that ends the year 1992.

I should be posting the links for the year shortly and today's song will be from 1993 :-)

App,
Silathellaam open'A ezhutha mudiyaathu, atleast I can't (our feelings in the year '92 at the time Roja released and also about MSV/IR comparision), you have expressed it brilliantly, without any bitter taste. Thank you so much. You almost reflected my mind, except the Devar Magan part.

appattamAna fans mentality, that too after their fav "winning" a prior war and remaining king for a decade (occupying the first top 10 slots with nearest competition only after, far behind) and then suddenly getting "defeated", not entirely due to lack of veeram / talent / Ayudham etc but due to various other factors...so, the irritation gets redirected to pitch / weather etc (read DM)

App - I feel very sick when you compared IR-ARR to Chetan Sharma - Javed Miandad.

Comparing IR-ARR one to one is totally wrong.... If IR is canvas-paint guy who made is art mostly with hand, ARR introduced photoshop.... You can always argue IR's music is superior, but ARR became instant hit because of his new methods. Eventhough we have seen many photoshop users lately, ARR is able to sustain because of his creativity.

IR had some weaknesses too.... it is for some reason BR, KB, MR went looking for new MDs (Hamsalekha, Keeravani, ARR).

1) IR songs definitely lacked lyrical quality after he split with VM. Too many maane-thene, thevaram-aavaram, penpura-thambura type non-sense rhyming words.
2) Too much emphasis on village subjects (not exactly IR's fault, but he could have diverted some to other MDs) - Ramarajan, Murali, Karthik...
3) Too many projects - Less creativity!! (example: Too many tabla songs). Too many "template" songs.
4) Except for few people like KH, BM others afraid to push IR (reason: see what happened with KB, BR etc).

Idhula, I'm especially keen on the IR New albums topic because midway through the thread, some folks started discussing IR's unheard of gems and creative experiments...instead of starting a separate thread for them. There are lot of wise nuggets buried in that megaserial of a topic.

Yes, yes. Same shankar.

BTW, for those who dont know( very few of you might not know), the one you see as "eden" in many of the archive links app_e gives is app_e himself.

App_Engine is eden, he of the "IR-1000 stars" fame??
I must have fwded that file to dozens&dozens of folks. No praise is too high for App to compile that despite not living in TN. BTW, I noticed a few top songs that didnt make it to IR-1000 stars. I bet a few songs in this thread didnt make it.
Looks like App worked several nights and dawns on that labor of love :)

While thiraippAdal places 'meerA' as a 1993 movie, most other websites (wiki, rakkamma etc) say it got released in 1992. I don't know for sure about the timing. Do hubbers know for sure which year this PC Sriram movie got released?
Dec 18 1992 according to cinesouth. I have a feeling I started hearing it in summer of 1992.

App, like you DM is not among my preferred albums. Not seen the movie, and not really attracted to it since I dislike the stink of politics/violence and nothing much has changed in TN. Maybe I will defer to the wisdom of the Plums/Sureshes, etc and watch it once.

And finally, given 54 IR albums in 1992, 29 songs seems less. Or is SPB didnt feature in many?

genesis,
I'm not telling that comparison as "right".

I knew it was wrong / unfair but it was thrust upon us ("unga AL pOyAchchu, puyal adichchiruchchu theriyumA"). Such comparison was a big thing in media (and not just among fans). I was only trying to recall what impact it created on HCIRF's in the 1992/1993 time period :-)

I mentioned that last ball sixer just to amplify / picture the "disappointment in the minds of kaNmoodiththanamAna IRFs" (as an answer to baroque's question of why I didn't embrace rOjA when it arrived...though I've not watched rOjA, I did have the cassette because my other-half loved the songs ).

'adi rAkku muthu rAkku' of ejamAn

Let's begin the year 1993 with a rocku song!

The chords delight jubilant number sung with a lot of energy by SPB! One of those "only-SPB-possible" kind of numbers from 90's! I especially love the 'veLLi maNee' portion in the saraNam - sweettO sweet! And the terrific change of rhythms towards the end of the song - only rAsA possible stuff there. So seamless and makes one jump and dance immediately!

The movie must have been released in early 1993 when I was in a "forced bachelor" situation :-) One of our colleagues went to France for a technology transfer business and came back with original 'bordeaux wine' bottle & hosted a party in our old bachelor home. Making good use of the 'wife-gone-for-delivery' situation, I was in the party, dancing late night for this very song  rOjA songs were played too

It wasn't until years later (well, a decade later) that I watched the movie, on a computer CD. It was a fun movie and quite a different one from the Rajini POV at that point of his career. There was heroism but also some unusual family drama and confusions. (Like the situation for this dance song, very unusual for a hero oriented movie). I think this was the first movie for Meena to act as jOdi with the 'muthu maNichchudarE vA Rajini uncle' :lol2: She did a couple more movies later too.

The song was a big hit and I heard it being played in PA systems / buses / functions etc in TN. The movie too was a commercial success I think. Read somewhere that RVU was able to stand firm in his stand and have IR (despite the not-like position of AVM). For that, RVU-kku oru sabAsh!

DV - Roja comparison is like comparing coconut water with apple. Both carries it own taste, purpose and benifits. Infact DM songs were popular in all city-patty-thotti as the movie itself was a block buster. Potri paadadi penne has mind blowing interludes with rural feel and manamagale as jai mentioned is a quality meal even now. Roja from the eyes of Mani has new tone and colour in each frame and its mostly a citi based polished screen play. ARR's digital music elevated the story telling to a new level. Music and lyrics stood tall on par with story, screen play, cinemotography and direction. These 2 factors reduced the pressure and demand from new faces hero and heroine. Fortunately the main characters performed well. We could compare one city based movie with other city based movie. Not the urban and rural.

The movie must have been released in early 1993 when I was in a "forced bachelor" situation :-)

Feb 18 1993. It was the week of the India-England Test match at Chepauk where Sachin scored 165, his first Test hundred in India. TI Cycles or Hercules MTB was one of the sponsors so after winning the test, the players rode around Chepauk turf in their bicycles :O I went down with mild chicken pox that week so lay in bed, with the temperatures soaring and the quietness of the day often pierced by the sounds of "Oru Naalam unai maravaadha..." wafting through the air.

There's another SPB song in meerA - pani vizhum mAlaiyil - idhuvum with AB, but never heard before - skip.

So, that ends the year 1992.

I should be posting the links for the year shortly and today's song will be from 1993 :-)

Fine song though, though AB has a terrific voice her Tamil pronounciation is quite irritating! but as usual SPB rescues the song ! Another tailor made song for Dr.SPB :)

One more fine song in this movie was by Dr.KJY, "puthu roadila than hoiya" some thing along these line. Since all the song were awesome, IR had to produced a song to "Keep the Jealous eyes "away from his awesome album, Rightfully he handed this song to Nagoor babu for the perfect assault

'oru nALum unai maRavAtha' from ejamAn, with SJ

A "north-indian-sounding" song from rAsA, sung by the star duet singer pair! I'm not sure it was all tablA - there may be 'dOlak' and other rhythm instruments freely deployed in the song and interludes. Besides, the chorus sounds very L-P-ish to make that NI feel, strictly IMO.

The very noteworthy part of this song are pAdal varikaL. Lovely and smooth flowing with the melody! Are these by vAli or RVU himself? Though no new-earth-shattering thoughts / uvamais etc, the way in which the words sit on the sweet melody is remarkable. In addition, they don't give an 'oft-used' feel.

I don't remember the song situation from the movie - may be after the hero winning the race (and thus becoming eligible to marry his sweetheart). Though I don't exactly remember the visuals, I remember Rajinikanth looking smart (though there was this mild uRuththal due to the 'muthu maNichchudarE vA' thingy playing in the back of the mind )

The song was a big hit I think and possibly a "regularly-played-in-buses" one. However, unlike most of the IR songs from prior years, this one wasn't that enjoyable at higher volumes that some of the buses typically played music :-( Or, may be it was around this time that I've started getting irritated with the higher volumes on some bus routes :-( (e.g. Pazhani to Dindigul, deafening I'd say).

In college, I had a classmate who is originally from Karamadai (A small town between Coimbatore and Mettupalayam). Director RVU was some distant relative to him. So he would persuade as many people as possible to go see RVU movies. (He will mostly see in the first week).

I am not a fan of RVU genre. I also do not like his lyrics also (excuse me baroque).

How did Rajni agree to do this Ejamaan movie? I have never seen this movie or plan to watch it. But it looks like a clone of chinna gounder (I have not seen that one too, except G'Mani comedy scenes)... I do not think it can be classified as Rajni movie. It is a RVU movie.

I think, only think, I do not like Ejaman songs because of RVU lyrics. (Applicable to all RVU movies - Sorry classmate!!)

There's no question about 400 at this point of time (there're "just" 25 more hits to reach that mark and there're another 15 or so easily in 1993 itself). However, I'm almost certain that it won't happen with the year 1993, considering my non-familiarity with a number of albums / SPB numbers, other than the hugely popular ones.

So, what about advance booking for 'konjikkonji alaikaL Ada' (veerA / 1994) for the #400 spot?

Most TN-ers are famililar with the 'Alum vElum pallukkuRudhi' pazhamozhi as well as Ala maram / its vizhudhu etc. Decades before, Adayar Alamaram was a big tourist attraction in Chennai (not sure if it still exists and being visited by tourists, I hear the cancer institute name more when people refer Adayar and not the Alamaram). OTOH, though people are familiar with the term 'vEl / vEla maram', not many younger gen TN-ers have an idea how this tree looks like or how it got associated with dental biz.

Most TN-ers are familiar with 'karu vEla' maram ofcourse  i.e. the 'seemai' variety. 'seemai' means British as per pre-independence usage and 'seemaik karuvEla maram' is perhaps the most familiar one for most TN-ers as this is seen everywhere, with a poisonous muLLu and grows easily like a menace. Not much useful for anything except vEli / fence business, not even as viRagu (too much fume, not much heat, irritation to eye when burning, ugly liquid coming out etc).

In contrast, the original 'karu vEla maram' & it's counterpart 'vEla maram' (i.e. whose trunk is not black but off-white / yellow) aren't that much known to most city dwellers / younger gen TN-ers. In the village where I grew up (and also in most villages in that area), kuLams had tons of these trees (both on the banks and right inside kuLams, partly submerged in water). One of those kuLams, near which we let our cow graze regularly, had many such trees where birds enjoyed sitting around, making noises and occasionally dive to eat fish / insects in the pond.

It was those karuvEla marakkuchchikaL that villagers used for "brushing" (before they migrated to colgate) and such kuchchees supposedly had medicinal value (much like Alam vizhudhu / vEppa marakkuchchi). The same ones get referrals in this song plus get sent in bunches to the hero by heroini on-screen :lol2:

Cool Param, most people have personal affection to certain songs and hate to see them getting missed in a compilation like this :-)

That's why we will have the missed list (A_S may be tracking it) and people with personal liking for such songs will write about them in the future.

win-win situation :-)

Thanks for the karuvela maram explanations app sir ... I assume it must be bitter taste right ? like veppillai ? Recollecting the scenes of the movie, Rajini ending up with veengena vaai , haha...

I too couldnt help recalling the 'Rajni uncle naan inge irukken' plumb Meena, seen as his pair! :lol2:

She looked naturally prettier in this movie, compared to the movies she did much later in her career, coated with thick make up. Also love the sad ''Oru naalum unai'' version(bit) by IR.

App sir, Oru Maalai chandiran from Unnai Vazhthi Padugiren is quite an addictive song. I am not sure about the plot or the stars, but this song is one of my frequent fav' . Rare one :)

In our school days we once had a doctor visiting our school to talk about the ills of tobacco. He mentioned there was an ad which brazenly claimed "Alum velum Pallukurudhi, Hot Kings Beedi nenjukkurudhi" :D

Just couple of days ago I was reminded of my visit to Madras University Adyar campus in 1992 summer where 'Nadanthaal naangu adi'(Chembaruthy) was played out in the canteen. I doubt if the tree exists, it was struggling for survival in my '92 visit itself.

'nilavE mugam kAttu' from ejamAn, with SJ

Soft and sweet, melodious SPB/SJ duet, in one of those inimitable (& my fav) rAsA tablA formats! SJ's age shows up a little bit but not a big irritant to enjoy this sweetie and SPB is magnificient as usual. konjam sOga rasam but still does not go too melodramatic or hyper-emotional. Must be reflecting the 'piLLaichchelvam illA nilai' in the story.

Though all the four SPB numbers from the movie were extremely popular in the public-address domains, this soft number was perhaps slightly less played compared to the other three, per my encounters. However, melody lovers rate this song higher than all others in general conversations (may be the same even in tfmpage discussions those days). There was a movie by director KaLanjiyam with the title 'nilavE mugam kAttu', years after ejamAn with rAsA music, small proof for the long-lasting popularity of the song.

There are a few other songs in the ejamAn movie (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/album.php?ALBID=ALBIRR00128&lang=en) besides these four great SPB numbers. Well, none of those were my fav. One with Lakshmi's poNNu doing a silukku act and couple of MV songs one of which has this kAladi maN biz - none impressed me. That made this album somewhat incomplete IMO, despite having four awesome numbers. Those songs were hits too but unlike those glorious 80's, either rAsA was missing something or my brain got damaged, so, no 'like-like' anymore for such numbers

While 1993 was somewhat a decisive year in TF field recognizing that there are "alternates to rAsA", he still had a decent share in the market / PA domain / buses / teakkadai etc. However, the days were getting numbered...

I would prefer either of these two. Two last SPB-IR songs for Rajini and Kamal; Konji Konji and Sri Ranga ranganathanin. Writing this itself is very sad. Let's hope there would be few more SPB-IR songs for both of them.

MaadathilE kanni MaadathilE is also another wonderful choice, naughty lyrics, demonstrating SPB's excellent singing skills even compared to the above two. Some great modulations, sangathis and 'Vaadi sivagami vaadinna' is enough to tell SPB as one of the greatest singer ever, if not the greatest ever. Able support given by Swarnalatha.

(ofcourse rasana rasa mattum illai, andha standardnu arththam - my observation is that it takes an iron heart to maintain standards when you follow a singer. Hariharan fans can easily accept mediocre Deva compositions - the perils of being a singer's fan. I do ofcourse dig outstanding compositions by Rahman et al sung by deiva kuzhandhai. But kozhandhaikkAga "Agar tum mil jao" ellAm kEkkaradhillai - wifey's favourite - I guess typical singer fans will accept such lesser standards in music just because of the singer. No offence meant. Also, you can have a favorite singer when they are singing similar/same compositions (like in classical music). But otherwise, IR's songs are orchestral music which happen to have one instrument replaced with lyrics/vocals :-)

'nalam vAzha ennALum en vAzhththukaL' from maRupadiyum

Of course Sureshji is right, maRupadiyum - the BM movie with sweet songs :-) This guitar / wind / strings beauty with soft background music became phenomenal with SPB's singing. One gets a picture of a serene river that is closer to sea, when listening to this song - slow pace, not in a rushing nurai upstream levels but calm, slow and wide. On a moony night, such a broad river is such a delight with the trees and plants on the other bank seen only as outline. No big noises and rushing sound of water but serene - with the calmness getting broken only by an occasional sound of a bird. Such a delightful bed-time song!

SPB adds a lot of life to the already-enjoyable-poetic lines and rAsA chooses to let things loose only in the interludes. I've always enjoyed guitar portions from songs of BM movies and this is no exception. (Me thinks BM also loved to show the acoustic guitar on screen whenever possible - en iniya pon nilAvE / vAnengum thanga viNmeenkaL / nalam vAzha). I haven't watched the movie but watched this sweet song on youtube a few times. Aravindasamy is the hero and Revathy the heroine. Unfortunately, the Leo coffee model becomes a laughing stock with his guitar strumming :lol2:

I don't know the story - why Revathy is serious / tearful etc; but the singing by SPB reflects such a setting so well and makes one feel 'involved', despite the guitar comedy by the hero. Power of music - that often covered up many defects of actors on-screen! Unfortunately, often rAsA had not been recognized for compensating for others weaknesses with proper "compensation", if one goes by the remuneration of MDs those days (especially in comparison with the earnings of heroes).

pOgattum, pOgattum, pugazh niRaiyakkidaikkum pOthu pon konjam kuRainthAl kuzhappam illai :-)

Her husband presents her divorce papers on her birthday.
He doesn't even remember it, when she pointedly asks what the date is, to put in the papers she is signing.
And she gets home and her friend, who has just seen her DoB from her resume, has this surprise party for her.
She is consumed by heaviness of the day. He sees the papers and is trying to cheer her up

Hence the lines like...

ellOrum sollum pAttu from maRupadiyum

A song very similar in construction to nalam vAzha. Sweet, soft, no-rush song with a lovely melody. Controlled orchestration - no adi-dhadi business - with lovely guitar seconds. I've watched the youtube for the first time today - seems to be a serious situation song. Recognized nizhalgaL Ravi to be an important character in the movie, from this scene. Also, from the Kovalan-Madhavi kind of lines, Revathy trying alcohol etc makes one think if Ravi plays her ex character on-screen (with the girl who eeshifies Ravi in the "Madhavi" character).

Must be an interesting family-drama kind of movie. pAkkanum. With BM being the captain, there had to be minimum standard (despite Aravind Samy torturing the guitar - thadavi thadavi kodukkuRaru :lol2:). Revathy seems to play the (ideally-suited) Kannagi role that gives a lot of azhumoonji opportunities. Interesting to see that she looks almost the same like how she looked like some 7 years before in mounarAgam!

On every PA-listening setting, I've heard both this song and nalam vAzha together. I've also listened to both these songs many times on Cbe radio. The movie must have been a decent success. By this time, the trend was slowly building that just big-hero songs or super-hit movie songs had decent air time. No more nizhalgaL kinds possible anymore. Cable TV was getting wide-spread (with star channels and other foreign channels, apart from local fellow playing cinema cassettes). Sun TV started sometime in this year but I don't know exactly when (as I didn't have TV watching habit those days - only when visiting relatives). I don't think the later phenomenon of "sat-TV-enabled-song-popularity" was still in vogue yet. Buses still played a lot of rAsA new songs and maRupadiyum got decent recognition.

From my memory, the most popular number from the movie was 'Asai adhikam vachchu'. The terrific SJ number with a dramatic saraNam! That song was "adopted" by Malayalam MD duo (Berny-Ignatius) for the Priyadharshan / Lal / Shobana movie 'thEnmAvin kombaththu' (mAnam theLinjE ninnAl). They even won the KL state award for music  (That movie TK got remade as a TF with Rajini / Meena, 'the dancing king'). nallA irukkattum!

Sun TV started sometime in this year but I don't know exactly when
Tamil New years Day 1993. Transmission would start at 6PM and end around 9 or 10PM. Rego's Jodi Porutham was a big hit during this phase and I think Ramesh Prabha's VarthaiVilayaatu also started around this time. For little over a year, the youngsters were watching PrimeSports/StarPlus/MTV and finally the adults in the house started having some extra TV options to DD. app,

'Marupadiyum' was indeed the remake of 'Arth'. BM had earlier remade 'Masoom' as 'Olangal' ('Masoom' itself was a remake of the English film, 'Man, Woman and Child', though the Hindi version was infinitely better than the English one). 'Arth' also had a couple of nice songs though I personally prefer the Tamil songs more. Movie wise, 'Arth' was definitely at a different level due to Shabana and Smitha. While I love Revathi, Shabana in 'Arth' was at a different league altogether. Infact as far as Indian heroines go, Shabana and Smitha were in a different constellation altogether. Both the songs posted by you are lovely ones and as you say the Janaki song was quite popular.

Marupadiyum, one of those very few films you are grateful for Aravindh Swamy's presence. With due respect to some of the hubbers here who liked the film, I found it to be a big bore, not helped by Revathi's post-Mouna Ragam dour faced performance. Of course, I thought maybe later when I am married and much older I'd like it. Nope, not now not ever. Songs are totally different matter (now I sing both SPB numbers to my son).

1. Mahesh Bhatt had many affairs - the particular one referred to in Arth is Parveen Babi, who herself had many affairs, was exploited and left in the lurch by many, ended up with dementia, and one fine day in the 90s, popped up suddenly throwing allegations on Amitabh Bachchan, and then died a sad death

2. Suresh - Smitaji yes - another galaxy she was from. Shabana - vengala kiNNam uNdu. But yes, Revathi was nowhere near Shabana in Arth. I am biased but fair. One of the tamil magazines explained it well thus: "olli shabanAvin melliya muga bhAvangaL, poosiya Revathiyidam illai". Sadly, even as a Revathy fan, I cannot contest that. I dont remember if Shabana was that slim during Arth, though.

3. Jagjit Singh's music for Arth vs Marubadiyum. Music, yes, the ghazals were quite apt etc. But the lyrics offer an interesting contrast - while StoveBurnt Samy offers solace, and gives an optimistic spin to Revathy, Raj Kiran is the other extreme, and perhaps, for that reason, I think, a little more closer to my heart - "Yehi duniya hai to Aakir Yehi duniya kyon hai?". He stokes the self-pity of Shabana, and to me, sounds quite like a sensitive artist that he is suppsoed to be, going with the flow, and taking his fortune at high tide - trying to evoke self-pity and perhaps sensing an opening there. And "Tum Ithna Jo Muskura Rahe Ho, Kya Gham hai jisko chupA rahe ho". While SB Samy tries to convert Rev's tears into smile with his lyrics, Kiran actually stokes Shabana's tears when she is making an effort to smile. Contrasting attempts at therapy.
More realistic is the Hindi one - azhagAna poNNu kasta padum bOdhu, comfort paNNi correct paNdravan normalAnavanA? illai, thannambikkai ootti sondha kAlla nikkaRA mAdhiri solace paNdravan real lifela pArka koodiyavanA? I think I fairly know an average male's heart - and I sure know which one of the protagonists is more real

4. While BM possibly saw an opening to explain his side of the Shoba story through an Arth remake, I think it is an average remake with BM adding nothing significant to the movie.

Plum, Kalakkal post  Need to watch Arth again.

~Marupadiyum~ not a bad movie, Sad yet motivational songs , Nalam Vazha & Ellorum sollum paatu. souful singing by the mighty SPB indeed. Arumaiyaana paadal varigal. Nicely done :-

''viralgalai thandi valarvathai kandu nagangalai naamum narukkuvathundu''
''Oru vaasal moodi maruvasal vaippan iraivan''

The opening song ''Ellorukkum nalla kaalam undu' , SJ's impeccable Aasai athigam & Nallathor veenai are quite sweet too. I've always wondered abt the fixation of Balu Mahendra abt the 2 wives ~ 2 women samachaaram. Marupadiyum,Rettai Vaal kuruvi,Sathileelawathy. I believe Rettai vaal kuruvi, he must have suttufied the plot from an english movie cuz' I remember having watched a movie exactly like that in english. Can't remember the title though.

nenjukkuLLE innArunnu from ponnumaNi, with SJ

Perhaps the last big hit for the IR/SPB/SJ combo as per my memory. There could have been hit songs for this top duet pair from other composers later on. There could have been other hits with rAsA too later than this, but not so much in my memory. And, definitely not in the same popularity level. This is one of those songs whose popularity in TN was like the SPB-SJ hits of 70's & 80's - sensational. I remember the time when this song was leading in some radio program where people voted. Also remember hearing this in a number of shops & homes in Bangalore

What's more, I've even seen this movie :-) Other than a couple of sweet songs, this movie was a torture :-( Karthik / Sowndharya starrer. (The actress later acted with Rajinikanth in Padayappa / was also famous in other languages, the most popular movie being Aptha mithrA - the Kannada remake of maNichithraththAzh where she did Shobana's "multiple-personality-disorder" role, a character later done by Jothika as chandramukhi  It was sad that she got killed in an air-crash at a young age).

The song is so sweet - with a special rhythm structure composed by rAsA for his lovely melody. As the song was for a movie by RVU, it's possible he also penned the lines. That director definitely had an exclusive way of throwing in "polished folk words" that sit nicely on the melody! On the screen, the girl is asked to be a "back-pack" for most part of this song. It was kind of funny:-)

I don't know whether the movie made big money but should have got decent returns for the makers who wouldn't have been bankrupt:-) (I remember seeing some 25th day kind of posters in Trichy / Kovai). At home, this song enjoyed quite a lot of youtube-watching in the last few years as small kids generally like the piggy-back thingy :lol2: One of my personal favourites as well!

anba sumanthu sumanthu from ponnumaNi

I heard this song for the first time when watching the movie. I was already feeling bored with the movie and here comes another azhuvAchchi song - that's what I thought at first. Absolutely no interest in listening to the number. I controlled myself from walking out during the song, simply as a mark of respect for rAsA. Though I do a lot of FF-ing of songs nowadays during DVD watches, including rAsA's, I don't think I've ever walked out of seat during a rAsA song when watching in theater. I had personally been a critic of people who went out for "fresh-air" & such things during IR's song sequences - despite the happenings on-screen being pathetic, and had to live by my rule. (Occasionally I've slept during a movie and missed songs, as in the case of mAppiLLai, but typically I woke up / got alert during songs even if I was drowsy before).

All such negativity simply got smashed, thrashed into pieces once the singing by SPB started! What a singing - I repeat - whattta soulful singing! Please shut every thought out, sit in a car alone (or use a headphone) and listen to this song in decent volume - and get the effect when SPB sings mA-A-mA! mey silirppu stuff! sOgaththaip pizhivadhu enbadhu idhu dhAnO? I sat drenched in music, thoroughly enjoying myself in the theater (didn't even pay much attention to what was happening on screen) and overjoyed to be proved foolish (in expecting a mediocre number):-)

While this song wasn't a huge hit like 'nenjukkuLLE', it did have its glory those days. I heard it a number of times on buses & radio and hence conclude that the song was reasonably popular among TN makkaL. By this time the music taste of TN-ers was undergoing a major change - ARR's style of music hitting the right notes with TFM lovers and industry working hard to have others like Deva too take a big portion of movies that used to automatically go to rAsA in the past. In spite of such a wave, these two sweet songs of ponnumaNi - despite being what was fast becoming an "outdated genre" - survived and became popular! The reasons must definitely be the lovely melody & great singing!

I don't think the other SPB numbers from the movie were hits (at least not from my PoV). If others feel so, please don't hesitate to add them to the missed list:wink:

Few songs like Mahanadhi's sri ranganadhanin..... , Atharmam's muthu mani muthu mani...... , Vanaja Girija's unnai edhirpaarthen..... , Magalir mattum's anandha bhairavi song , Priyanka's vana kuyiley....,kola kiliye kola kiliye.... kakkai siraginiley etc.. are coming for another 5+ yrs.

'chinnappoonkiLi' from pArvathi ennaippAradi, with SJ

It's very interesting how this song had got so strongly registered in my mind - while I don't know any details about it at all

For the first time I'm learning the movie's name and thiraippadal also has a totally unknown name 'Saravanan' as the hero. Who is he? There's no question that it's a very nice song - with SPB & SJ singing under rAsA's baton. It has that "typical early 90's feel" - somewhat similar to the ejamAn songs. Nice melody and smooth flowing lines (though nothing extraordinarily poetic).

There's no question that I've heard the song a number times on bus travels (or may be on radio, when rushing to go to work, without paying attention to the announcer) - otherwise there cannot be any explanation as to how this song is so familiar to me. I don't know if there's anyone in this forum who watched this movie (or knows more details about the film). I tried to scan through the other songs in this album but none seems to be familiar - which means 'chinnappoonkiLi' was a loner in hit status. One gets surprised that someone chose to have this kind of 'karnAtakamAna' movie title in the year 1993! That too with an unknown hero and hoped to have an impact on TN audience  Did they think that rAsA name was sufficient to sell a film? Possibly, as it wasn't uncommon for moneybags to try their fortune that way. (rAsA kAlil vizhu, title song avaraippAda sollu, any parithAbamAna hero / heroine / story etc ain't matter, just make sure the movie title does not have 8 letters - you can surely double your money :lol2:)

All said and done, against all odds this song had hit me - and earns its place in this listing exercise :-)

'edakku mudakkAna sarakku' from kalaingan

From the PoV of a pOrALi IRF, rAsA was like a team playing one-day match at this point of history :-) The opponent has batted first, setting up a huge target (rOjA, puthiya mugam, gentleman were craze, heard everywhere) and the asking rate was climbing. There had to be a star batsman who can hit fours and sixes to win the game.

So, a movie with Kamal was obviously an expectation-raiser :-) That too about a singing star, produced by Sivaji productions - what more to ask. There got to be sixers and boundaries coming up (or expected). Feverishly the cassette was bought and played by the pOrALi fan, with the expectation that the star batsman is going to make things look easy on the pitch.

This song, that started like the 'engE endhan kAdhali' of enakkuL oruvan, with SPB, promised a bright innings. (Though I didn't like the 'indrajith' name and the chanting, there was some grandeur / build-up). The batsman had a big swing with his bat - but alas, it got fielded (edakku mudakkAna lyrics, karadu muradana saptham, kacha mucha tune all dampening down some great singing by SPB & nice orchestration) and only a single.

So, even though the song had some air-time / bus-time etc, not a huge hit to match the boundaries and sixers from competition. Just a single :-(

groucho,

What about baseball? (Equivalent of cricket)...Soccer is binary (goal / no goal, 1 & 0) cricket is fuzzy logic - 1 run = single, 2,3 - runs obtained by running across wickets, boundary = 4 runs when ball running on the ground crossing the outer boundary with batsman not needed to run, sixer = 6 runs, ball crossing the boundary without touching the ground (again batsmen need not run) :-)

Farams - ponnumani did have a Mano song :). Adi pattam thedi(not the adi pattam thedi from MMKR that was deleted from the movie). I have to say sindhu nadhi chemmene is another grievous miss by app. RVU manages to prop up decent lyrics within the maane thene sendhene format of IR :). And more relevant to the thread, a song that cannot do without SP. Anyway....paarvathi ennai paaradi had another supposedly saleable factor - namely V Sekar, the emerging family friendly director, whose supposedly stylish turn to romance was PEP. It had its own hype among thiruvalluvar kalai koodam fans, only to fall fatally on its face. This song heralds the climax with the captain-wannabe, and romantic hero wannabe - which itself, Sekar should have realised was thannerukkum mannennaikkum kalyanamaam sami - sets himself on fire, hoping to thus rouse the heroine into defying her family and rushing into his hands. The director, at this juncture, calculates that the audience might be put off by a tragic climax and conjures a happy ending. He was wrong. I was rooting for the roasting of captain wannabe and girl by then. And thus began the successful career of V Sekar, who realised that he wasn't really the versatile director he thought he was when he started his romantic adventure PEP and sensibly stuck to low budget, lower middle class family dramas laced with comedy from then on. Captain wannabe tortured us for a few more movies - I remember one with Archana, another romantic torture, making it possibly the most ambitious romantic movie in Film history, with that hero and that heroine - before dissapearing. As grouch observed, he got a second life with cottonsoldier but thankfully, squandered it by attempting to play hero again.

App,
One kind request. Please do not compare these songs with others. It does not give the correct picture, eventhough it is your opinion. In the same film according to most of us, there is a 'sixer' in Endhan nenjil neengaadha and many fours too. If you would have said he hit a sixer and fours and then he took a single, I would agree. Plainly you are compare those films with one single song, which again does not match and it is not a apple-to-apple comparison. If you are saying this song is a single against those high targets, there are also singles on other side; that happens to every music director. Ideally if we are comparing, we should also compare those 3 films against atleast 40 hit films of IR during that year (1993). It does not look good either way. Simply, we can address, 'I didn't like the song' with reasons. Even I am not a favorite of this song, but your posts projects some IR songs in a very bad way which is not entirely true. I think we can avoid these comparisons, atleast in this thread, where we are trying to project SPB-IR hits and how it was received. We can even ignore posting about it, rather giving a bad picture.

V_Sji,
poRumai! poRumai!

I am coming to the other songs of the movie as well :-)

I'll definitely tone down the comparison part. My intention is definitely not to stir up controversy or hurt

However, as a note of explanation, let me clarify a few things :

1. This whole series of compilation is not a statistical listing of IR-SPB hits, how big the hit was, how well they were received by public etc. That would be interesting read but I'm not well-qualified to do such reporting :-) Film news Ananthan, Pammalar sir, Manisekaran sir, dhool Saravanan sir department :-)

2. Also, this is not an attempt to post about the musical greatness, nuances, brilliance etc of the IR-SPB hits - adhu unga department sArE:-)

3. From the beginning, I've tried to stick to the main theme of 'how an average / pOrALi IRF had received hit songs of IR/SPB songs in his life time, what kind of impact they had on him / peers / colleagues / associates / relatives around the time of arrival or when first heard by that HCF, what kind of mental reactions such songs bring back when listening today'. It's more of a personal tale while not distorting established facts :-)

4. I definitely appreciate kadivALams - like your post above - when I tend to go overboard on this!

5. Also, I appreciate being pointed out about factual errors which will be happily corrected :-)

nanRi ji!

Mine is the opposite, the pallavi tune & lines were both totally uncool. Only SPB & orch were cool but couldn't raise it beyond a level.

That this wasn't a big hit is proof that main melody is the main thing in any song for better reception by people, it had to be catchy / cool etc.

Next comes the pallavi lines (need not be great, even pure instrumental like HTNI-NBW where it does not exist at all is ok - but should not be 'edakku-mudakku-sodakku' kind of extremely irritable)

Singing / orchestration / beats / sounds all only follow. Even if those are extraordinary, the song cannot raise above a particular level if the main melody is not cool / tolerable :-)

App,
Thanks for understanding. I totally understand your frustration at that time, every HCIRF would have faced that. I even know many HCIRF (in my age) slowly migrated. Luckily, my friends in my town (mostly elders to me) who were staunch IR fans were least bothered about these transition things. They were deep into his music and only were focussing on his music, whenever we get together. If not imagine, how would I appreciate Ramarajan's films and his songs?. Since I was with them, I got the same mentality. Not a single second we would have thought that we could migrate or those songs were better. We clearly know what everyone were missing. I really thank them. Even now when I get calls with them we only talk about Ilaiyaraaja nothing else. I would like to recall KV's heart-felt post in other thread recently, If IR has given us so much and gave us hope when we are down and made our life more meaningful (I believe it is true for many of us here), why should we bring him down, just because of few scenarios, even if it is true to some extent. Avara vittu thara mudiyaathu, mudiyavE mudiyaathu sir!.

'kalaignan kattukkAval vittOdum kARRaippOla' from kalaignan

Another SPB solo from the same movie that was slightly better than the edakku mudakku, mainly in the not-so-irritating-lines. However, similar in popularity or reception as per my perception. For someone who had been spoilt with the likes of mEgham kottattum in the previous decade, not satisfying (more so when we were craving for a super-hit album). The folkish shift into 'munnam oru nAL annai madiyil...' didn't go very well with me as well.

That the album had a sixer in 'endhan nenjil neengAtha' was a big satisfaction. However, a possible boundary was cut short to 2 runs or so-so by the male singer in 'dillubaru jAnE', even though KSC was singing her heart out! Kamal's kokkarakkO kOzhi was a personal favourite to me but on the general reception, it was a single or 2 run thingy as well.

The movie's director made sure that the batsman get out quickly :lol2: It was like a mainstay batsman (Kamal+Sivaji prodn. was like Sehwag for the Album captain rAsA) getting cheaply out, after a lone six / a couple of singles and twos, here and there, not even reaching 20 when what was asked was a century minimum if not 200 :-)

So, a not-so-exciting song for this Friday as we complete this movie from 1993 :-)

#383 எடக்கு முடக்கான சரக்கு
(கலைஞன், 1993) (http://www.thiraipaadal.com/tpplayer.asp?sngs='SNGIRR1790'&lang=en) From the PoV of a pOrALi IRF, rAsA was like a team playing one-day match at this point of history :-) The opponent has batted first, setting up a huge target (rOjA, puthiya mugam, gentleman were craze, heard everywhere) and the asking rate was climbing. There had to be a star batsman who can hit fours and sixes to win the game.

Inappropriate comparison. It is supposed to be more like comparing Tendular(ARR) to Gavaskar (IR). IR was indisputable king (at least in TFM) when ARR debuted. There was AND is nothing for IR to prove against ARR (except may be in technology side... It is like expecting ARR to compose and record a song w/o technology, but use traditional orchestra)

It was ARR consolidating his place despite IR's strong presence. HCIR fans like you were predicting (hoping to be exact) ARR will fade out until the dawn of new millennium. Some more fans until ARR won oscar and both IR and ARR appeared on the same stage. Some extreme fans still continue with that hope. (I have heard some nut cases in Pakistan still hope to invade in India and re-establish Mughal Empire!!)

In my opinion it was nothing but: பழையன கழிதலும் புதியன புகுதலும்.

ARR has now become பழையது, there will be புதியது soon.

'sivakAmi nenappinilE' from kiLippEchchu kEtka vA, with SJ

Perhaps the least familiar Fazil movie to me. Remembered this song only when I scanned for the movies of 1993 for SPB-IR songs. Otherwise, one doesn't even recall that such a movie existed  Obviously, it's my problem that I wasn't paying close attention to the TF scene of those years. However, Fazil's movies (including the TF ones) always had some buzz around them in Palakkad but this had none. Also, the songs weren't as popular as those of his other movies.

I've heard the song a few times on CBE radio and thus assume that this was moderately popular / known inside TN. The first time I heard this song was on radio, when sitting in the home of a friend in Madhukkarai. This place is a township, the cement factory suburb of Coimbatore (ACC colony) and this song flashes me back those cement dust covered roofs / trees / plants / everything :-) If one stands still outdoor in that township for an hour or so, their head could be covered with the dust as well. So much limestone pollution from the factory chimney. I had a few friends there - hearts of gold - and enjoyed many nice moments with them!

Interestingly, these cement factories seemed to have some long-term-connection with me, though I've never worked for one. During my campus interview, the ACC-Babcock gave the job (first time visit to Calcutta for the final interview)...then Andhra Cements gave another offer around the same time (first time visit to Hyderabad, Indira park / Birla mandhir)...then first few months of bachelor life (in the new Palakkadan telecom job) was in the Walayar cement factory colony, with a friend. The Madhukkarai friends followed. Even many years later, when I moved to TN for a brief period, had a friend in Dalmiyapuram (aka mukA's Kallakkudi) and visited that dust filled township a few times :lol2: enna oru "concrete" bandham

My bandham with Fazil/IR songs is similarly concrete -i.e. overall, with this KPKV album an exception. Unfortunately for this thread, SPB didn't get to sing many of them, it was mostly KJY / KSC. This song is that way, a rare one. There's another SPB song in this album too but never heard before, which is another rare case among Fazil movie songs:oops: Even the recent one -ONOK- I've heard from a relative's car (apart from a few listens from the hub-given-links). KPKV is that way unique

'indha mAmanOda manasu' from uthama rAsA, with SJ

Sweet themmAngu by the top duet pair from another "nothing-known-to-me" movie from this year :-) Though the song is very familiar to me based on the listens in buses / radio and elsewhere, I don't have any personal memory attached to this one. thiraippAdal site says Prabhu is the hero & Raj Kapoor the director (whom we posted about in the prior year also). I have no idea otherwise about the movie.

However, since I got triggered about cement factories by the KPKV song, last night my mind went back to the early 90's for another "cement factory" connection (that I missed in that post) and I thought I can include it in the next post (which is for this uththama rAsA song). While ACC was Tata group, this one was owned by Birla group & the plant was known as Mysore cements I think (or, may be Birla Cements). It was near Shimoga and a couple of hours train travel from Bangalore to a place called "ammasAndra". It was a passenger and used to stop in that village station. The cement factory township was a couple of miles away & there was no transportation. We used to inform in advance for someone to send a jeep to pick us up when I went a couple of times to that place, with a "wiring-soldering" kind of helper, to fix the switching equipment that had the typical "RS485 driver chip failing due to power-on-off-surges". (V_S wrote about OSI ref model & I thought let me add some veeraprathApam here :lol2:)

Well, the guest house was such a wonderful place - no, not the room which was so so. The dining place, however, was awesome! It was pure-veg stuff and the dal fry was great. That plus the Alu sabji were among the best I've ever tasted. Add to them, the bestest pulkA I've ever eaten! (People from Bangalore must be familiar with this uppina bread that looks like small chappAththi but the process to make is slightly different as there has to be a 'direct-on-flames' thingy to make it uppify like poori, northies / punjabees may call this fulkA).

Oh, as I write, my mind & tongue recall exactly that taste, instant secretion of umizhneer!

'intha mAmanOda manasu' is like that pulkA / sabji / dAl fry!

'muththirai ippOdhu' from uzhaippALi, with Kavitha K (now Kavitha S)

Very enjoyable duet number for this Rajini / P Vasu combo movie. I've not seen this movie but remember very clearly the SunTV's earliest hit program that had the "count-down" of hit songs. 'uzhaippALi illAtha' song was in the #1 spot at one point of time when I watched the program, ahead of the other hit songs of that time period & it surprised me! Must be the Rajinikanth factor - as it was otherwise inexplicable to me for such a song to be ahead of the then-hottest-ARR hits!

This duet has enjoyable drum work (and that irritating "bomb" sound every now and then, don't know what is the reason, may be they showed the "colorful" bombs on screen). SPB, as usual excels in this number and the female voice is nice too. I think a para on the female singer, who is new to this compilation, is worth it. Also, we may not get another chance here to write about her :lol2:

Kavitha Krishnamoorthy, north-born-brought-up-Thamizh I think, had an identifiable voice and was a peer of one of my fav HFM singers, Alka Y. (I think her 'vAyil kozhukattai vaiththukkoNdE pAdum' kind of voice had a successor in Sadhana Sargam later on). She was intro'd by L-P I think, like Alka, and had some success when Sridevi was ruling bollywood. Later, became an "also-ran" kind of singer, if one goes by the 'kuch kuch hOta hai' songs. (When SRK loves Rani M, Alka sings for her in 'koi mil gayA' / 'tum pAs AyE', while the loser Kajol is given Kavita K's voice in 'koi mil gayA' ; later, when SRK loves Kajol, Alka gets to sing for her but Kavita K is made to sing for her mom mehndi song  )

In any case, possibly because of the rOjA effect (not the heroine, the MR movie), many vadakku singers came to TFM and Kavitha got to sing for this movie. She married the famous musician / violinist L S (yes, the composer Kamal originally signed up for HR) in the late 90's and practically quit filmy singing I think.

Great song - if one removes the bomb sounds! (Now that some have talked about KR doing BGM for the movie, it's possible he did arrangements for the songs too. Well, ellAmE rAsA thAnE )

Super song from Uzhaippali and my most favorite in the movie & one of the top favorites in 90s IR songs. Love SPB's singing, sounded truly majestic, especially the modulation he does at end of the charanams before joining pallavi. Another reason to like this song is the unique voice of KavitaK, maybe because I loved her singing in Aaj Me Upar Aasman Niche (forgot the movie, Nana Patekar & Seema Biswas on screen). I agree with V_S that and I like her voice much better than Sadhana's.

App - I do enjoy the bomb sound in that song, thought it fitted in the overall setup beautifully. The song was pictured in a boxing ring and the bom sound indicated a knockout punch or something like that.

'oru kOlakkiLi sOdi thanna' from uzhaippALi, with KSC

Another 'dreamy-sounding' SPB duet from the Rajini-Roja starrer; this one with KSC, who was in top form. For a modern-sounding song with some lovely drum work and wind instruments, the "thogaiyaRA" sounds odd :-( Not that the rest of the lines were sophisticated but the uzhaippALi-modhalALi kind of vazha-vazha-kozha-kozha could have been avoided. (BTW, what does 'kOlakkiLi' mean? I know pachchaikkiLi / panjavarNakkiLi etc, haven't heard / read about this kiLi.) Minor things like this prelude were responsible for rAsA songs slowly becoming 'uncool' during the mid-90's, IMHO.

Still, this song didn't go unnoticed -though youththu complained about the karnAtakamAnA start. Not only because it got placed in a biggie movie but it also had a catchy melody. Plus, top-class singing! It had its glory in buses / PA systems and elsewhere and I've heard it 100's of times during those days.

People often talk about this movie in the Goundamani thread and once I got the dvd rented. For some reason, I couldn't watch it but others at home could and they didn't have nice things to say about it. P Vasu enna paNNi vachirundhAro theriyalai. (Is there a villi-like character in this movie?)

There was a discussion in NEPV thread that Rajini left IR for Deva / ARR. This movie is a proof in the opposite direction :-) Like ejamAn, this too came after aNNAmalai (KB's production, who was supposedly angry with IR during PPA times and worked hard for an alternative).

And there were two other RK-IR movies after this as well...

Kavitha is a mild distraction in this song.

Kavitha  all these days, I thought it was by swarnalatha (auto tuned voice)... indha thread'la milestone song'a varathukku ella thaguthiyum irukku...

you have not watched this movie as well!! I am not surprised anyway :) regarding the bomb sound, it was picturised in the boxing ring. It comes whenever Rajini punches the boxing bag.

Oh man, not that song, her voice is engulfed in sea of musical honey. Other ejjambil plis. The auto-tune feel is there in songs like AttamA. This one is okay.
