The Ganpathi Ala song sounds like a typical Marathi bajan, but one can already see shades of his touches in the bass and keys in the background.

of late, IR is having an adventurous fling with non-Tamil language films in Kannada, Marathi and Telugu ! besides his customary albums in Malayalam and Tamil! on top of this, he is getting his innermost desire of using a properly trained classical orchestra from Budapest fulfilled whenever he gets a chance to insist on using them every other film ! its just sad that we dont have the culture of releasing movie instrumental soundtracks as done in Hollywood!

i learnt from several symphony orchestras sources here in the US that, most of the orchestras in Europe, though heavily talented and skilled, are not financially well-off! in fact, most Hollywood composers regularly hire European orchestras for recording orchestral soundtracks, as it is much cheaper to hire them and have a small group of technicians flown into Europe with the composer, rather than hiring an orchestra in the US itself!

so economics at work! IR not only gets a highly skilled cheap orchestra for his creative output, but thanks to him, these orchestras get a regular bonus paycheck in these times of extreme hardship in Europe!

What is the statistical breakup of astrological predictions ?? data from radiocarbon dating, classical geology and its allied branches (geochemistry, geophysics etc), physical anthropology, primatology, archaeology, linguistics & genetics give corroborative evidence to the past!
Indian astronomy makes logical sense from a scientific perspective - but astrology ??

"Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence" - Carl Sagan (1934 - 1996) !I clearly told that predicting past is bit easy! It has personally worked for me for handful of times. And there is something called பிறவிப்பயன் which Raja himself claims frequently. So if there is something called பிறவிப்பயன் then there shud be some mechanism to gague it. Atleast after that பிறவிப்பயன் has been realised.

Anyways believing Astrology is totally a side track and i am not interested to continue that debate here!

KV/Plum, you are right. I was thoroughly disappointed with Vijay-Airtel finale. There was no IR songs, only 2 carnatic songs, both from Thiruvilayadal. Rest was all 'aracha-maavu-arachified' from Vinnai Thandi.., Ravana, Alaipayudhe, etc.

Thanks a lot crvenky for posting the ISS final links. Truly a majestic final. Both performing extremely well. Highly talented girls. Excellent song selections for the final. Mrudula's isai arasi is truly an exceptional performance. Kalpana always tells that she wants to sing for IR and I think through her final performance he again indirectly pleads IR. Thoroughly deserving!

Yesterday, Kalpana (daughter of TS Raghavendar) won the Idea Star Singer title worth Rs.1 crore. She gave an amazing performance, by fusing the compositions of Bach, Handel & IR.

2nd place went to Mridula who sang Isaiarasi (Thai Mookambikai) superbly.

Oh my god! What a knowledge! That too the first singer, Kalpana - what a creativity to the idea of singing the bass lines of those track! May i ask if Kerala is much more musically talented than TN in some aspects? Lots of talented singers, and very rare to see a singer choosing a complex western classical track for the live finals. and the crowd enjoyed well.. Vijay Tv ellaam jujubiyaa theriyuthu ithukku munnaadi!

Added to that, see the seat arrangement, just plastic chairs for even Guests like Jesudas! No bandhaa! But rich in content and price amount! No vetti bandhaa like Vijay TV.

Vijay TV producers would have never allowed, not well known Raaja song for sure.

Isn't Kalpana the d/o Ragavendar who plays the judge role in Sindhubhairavi? So, she is from TN, illaiyA:-)

Do you mean Oorvashi's akkA (who plays w/o KBR in chinna veedu)? That is a different Kalpana. This one is a wannabe playback singer (who even had a few chances in movie playback singing but didn't make it big. Much like her dad who tried to become a MD but couldn't succeed but ended up doing minor roles on screen).

I think Kalpana has sung couple of songs for IR. I remember one in Pon Megalai & Adhu Oru Kanakkalam. Not sure though, if she is the same Kalpana. Rakkamma.com shows 2 songs under her name: in Dhanush & Thambi Pondatti.

True! But then, when a director can take YSR, he can take GVP as well. I mean, whats the point in who the composer is, when it is not by IR anyway.

Also, I think it doesnt matter if any director, who worked with IR changes composer - These days, a lot of factors guide the decisions. It is not easy to always stick to personal favourites. It doesnt mean they respect IR any less.

To IR: Bala's departure is nothing but good riddance. At least, he doesn't have to stomach all the silly and inane stuff that is thrown at him during the BGM phase.

I am sure even Yuvan might have got bored doing the silly flick Avan Ivan--a movie that had no logic or continuity thru out.

Didnt IR reject Bala when he came to him for this movie and Nandha as well? I think thalaivar wanted Bala to continue with Yuvan but he had other ideas. But i wunt be surprised if Bala comes back to IR if he has another challenging story.

Doesnt matter! even if he quits, it doesnt really matter!
on a selfish note, I'd like it if he quits movies to compose instrumental albums.
And I dont think he will quit before hitting that 1000 milestone!

I sincerely hope that he doesn't stop. I am somehow certain that he won't. Going by the couple of songs in 'thandavakone', 'Sreeramarajyam' and now 'Snehaveedu' you can clearly see he is in top form. The orchestration is having the zing, the new jazz sound is lovely to listen to and the imagination is in full force. So no stopping him. I am sure he will sign more films. If you see after the deluge of 2009, 2010 had only 2 films. This year we have had quite a few albums and still have 'Happy' and the Marathi album to come out. So next year can be lean but I don't think he will stop.

Clarification: When I said it doesnt matter, it means he has already given us a bounty and it doesnt matter even if he wants to retire. I doubt if he wants to. and yes, he is very much in form. But just that it would be perfect if he comes up with instrumental albums as well (instead of devotional ones - I liked few devotional albums, but they anyday cannot be compared with the colossal work on HTNI & NBW).

+1 to Raagas' post.However, if he does instrumental, I wish he does it on a musical theme, The instrumental album based on Guru(malayalam) bg score isn't that good.Mainly, the complaint is the rapid change of mood in these instrumentals. For instance, as a background score, these quick mood changes in instrumentation within the 4-5 minutes of a single piece worked in Guru. But they don't work when you listen standalone as an album.I also have a partiality towards HTNI over NBW mainly because the whole origin of man, evolution of sound through the ages thingy is too distracting in NBW. I don't want that grand an attempt.Thiruvasagam was stupendous but as raagas pointed, I don't want another of those devotional married to WCM concept. That is, no devaaram, divya prabhandham or old testament, please!What is my point net-net? I don't know, I am confused. I am happy with NOTHING at all from Him for the rest of his Life. Yet, if you discuss specifics, I end up wishing for this or that. nAn sariyA thAnE pEsurEn? :oops:

I dont care for Bala either. Except for some rawness (probably first hand experience) and some realism, I dont think he is a full-fledged director. There were so many opportunities for music/BGM to help him out but he never gave IR that good an opportunity (in terms of screenplay). He should contemplate why his mentor swears by the boss :-) ..Considering the standards are so bad for direction in our film world he looks good.

Will try ofcourse! I dont have many expectations as such, because it is a play and emphasis will be more on proceedings, actors, dialogues etc. but will still try to record - IF i manage to get the tickets!

But i dont understand - what do they mean by "composed and conducted by". Will IR be there with the orchestra, to conduct it Live? or are they using that phrase, in a casual sense, replacing "Music By". I doubt if the music will be played LIVE.

Ditto doubt here. However, something I'd fancy would be a live orchestra playing along (remember that set of violinists he'd brought along for Mohanbabu's birthday funtion?). The idea isn't very uncommon in theatre, actually. A 10hour long Kannada play (staged by RangAyanA, last year at Mysore), had a small set of musicians playing live music, that was composed by Hamsalekha, who was also present with the group. Though it's difficult to imagine something on these lines from IR, it'd be great if it were to happen! Lets see what's in store.

Yes, a home-coming of sorts. We've heard the man himself speak about playing the harmonium and singing for plays and commie stage talks/shows; days of a young warrior wanting to burst into the battle scene. Now what remains to be seen is how the old and battered warhorse treads this path.

Everytime I know what the answers will be, yet I remain glued to try and see what he will say. Yesterday the interviewer asked an interesting question, equivalent to what is in your mp3 player now. (What music are currently listening.) I waited hoping Raja will mention some names, some genres so that we can get an idea on what his current thought process is and how we can see it in his latest creation. But as my brain said, Raja became MS Phlasaphy Phlaspahy and gave the same generic answer. Well, some questions are bound to remain unanswered I guess :)

Thanks skr for sharing the links. Speechless! As KV mentioned, just for a minute, how many musicians have been trained thoroughly, that too in a day and delivered. In every second of Maestro's compositions, we can hear the amount of hard work and details went inside. Even in the 'chumchuka' which he corrected the choir, was just one note. How much effort he took to get that single note to perfection. That's how it has been with every note he composes.

Not so good news on Happi front. One web site says: "The release date of the film has been constantly changing. Last it was confirmed for October 14, 2011 release but that has been changed again with no date fixed as of October 6." No clue what is happening and why dates keep changing.

My speculation is that it should be releasing on TimesMusic (Bhavna Talwar's Dharm released on same label). But timesmusic website is under construction, since long time.. huh! Times we are living in :-(

I have been to the play "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf". I didnt like the play.

Regarding the muisc - firstly, i felt the play did not have much scope for music. On 2nd level, it didnt have much scope for Ilaiyaraaja as well. There were very few (short) pieces that he had done. And those short pieces were just about ok. They are like teasers to something big... and that something big never came up. Honestly, it was a disappointing work. I dont know if it is disappointing because he didnt have much scope. If he didnt have, why he did he take it up in the first place? And if he, by some illusion, felt that it had scope, then why didnt he utilize and fill it up with music?
Those videos of "making of music" might be tempting, but I am afraid that is all you could hear in the play as well.

There was nothing substantial to record. The play was about a couple who keep fighting. So lot of screaming was going on. And in the middle, a strings piece comes that stays for about 10 seconds and then vanishes. Then, no music for another 15-20mins.. and suddenly another 30 seconds of oboe and flute... and another round of screaming. The short pieces were apologies in my opinion. The tail-end piece of a song in "Hey Ram", which had symphonic effect, is much better and longer music than all the music put together in this play!

The sound volume was extremely low (and faulty)... and imagine a soft low base flute amidst all that screaming. Totally inaudible. I bet my phone couldnt have recorded even if I had placed it near the speaker. But sound system aside, the themes played were hardly anything. What can we enjoy, from a piece that lasts for 12seconds or 20 seconds.

There was only 1 piece that prominently played out for 1 and half minutes... And guess what was that - Singing Self, from Nothing But Wind. (I cannot forgive IR for this :-( )

All that hype about Hungarian Musicians etc is all pointless. He did use them probably, but to no effect at all.

Forget it... move on... and look forward to Happi (if that is releasing, by the way).

Don't understand what are IR's priorities. This is a unique opportunity presented and he handled without any special focus from what I hear. Does it not require some preparation and special treatment given the fact that musicians don't get very many opportunities.

I feel the same thing happened when he tried symphony. While he is extremely talented, he should have given good time and should have given 200%.

Thalaivar probably do not know what his fans are expecting out of him. What to do?

I think people need to calm down and not overreact by making silly statements that IR handled it without any focus and such. This is a play not a musical play from what i read. IR probably did it because the director came to him and requested him to. Its the director's choice on how he feels the music needs to be and how much music is needed for the play. This is not a Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber kind of musical play. I also think it must have been the directors choice to use the Singing Self bit for the play since IR rarely wants to re-use his old music unless specifically requested by the director/producer.
Lets be honest here this is not a Bombay Dreams kind of opportunity we are talking about here. Just a small play(though a Broadway play) done by Indian group and IR did what he could given the scope the play had.
Also lets stop questioning whether IR gave 100% or 200%. The man has dedicated his life to music. This is not a usual job like we do. Its a creative art and its upto people who work with him to extract the creativity out of him.

Also, what's wrong if he used HTNI / NBW stuff for this play? :confused: I'm of the opinion that those albums didn't get the exposure they deserved and any more "stage" opportunity should be utilized to expose them a lot more.

In the west, people compose 4 or 5 worthwhile tracks in their lifetime, do world tours playing them everywhere on stage and make million times more money than what IR did with his compositions - thousand times the works of such famous fellows!

And we, ungrateful fellows, complain about him reusing some of his classics for a drama :shock:

Bad idea from the beginning. Raja was probably doing them a favor. The original play has almost no room for music, especially IR type music. It is a very dialogue driven play, a character study and brilliant one at that. Even seasoned actors fall short when performing this play and can easily turn into a shouting match. It is a play for Sivaji sir not Raja sir and I'd give anything to watch Nadigar Thilagam play that role :(

Nobody can deny the fact that Jeeva was instrumental in IR's success. It will be tough for IR to get out of this and be active again, considering that he has lost his wife and companion for years. It is his music that kept me company in all the phases of my life so far, and what will keep him company for him in this sorrow? இளையராஜாவின் உயிர் நாடியாக திகழ்ந்தவர் ஜீவா. அவரது இசைப் பயணத்திற்கும், குடும்ப வாழ்க்கைக்கும் இடையிலான பாலமாக விளங்கியவர். இளையராஜாவின் ஜீவனாக வாழ்ந்து வந்த ஜீவா, இளையராஜாவின் உற்ற துணையாக விளங்கினார் - நேற்று அவர் மறைந்து விட்டார்.

ஜீவாவுக்கு நேற்று இரவு கடும் நெஞ்சு வலி ஏற்பட்டது. இதையடுத்து அவரை அப்பல்லோ மருத்துவமனைக்குக் கொண்டு சென்றனர். அங்கு அவரைப் பரிசோதித்த டாக்டர்கள், ஏற்கனவே அவர் இறந்து விட்டதாக கூறினர். இதைக் கேட்டு இளையராஜாவின் குடும்பம் அதிர்ந்து உடைந்து போனது. மறைந்த ஜீவாவுக்கு கார்த்திக் ராஜா, பவதாரணி, யுவன் ஷங்கர் ராஜா ஆகிய 3 குழந்தைகள் உள்ளனர்.
தனது பிள்ளைகள் மீது மிகுந்த பாசம் கொண்டவர் ஜீவா. அதிலும் இளைய மகன் யுவன்ஷங்கர் ராஜா மீது அதிக பாசம் வைத்திருந்தார். அவரது முதல் கல்யாணம் தோல்வியில் முடிந்ததால் அவர் பெரும் வருத்தத்திலும், வேதனையிலும் இருந்து வந்தார். சமீபத்தில்தான் யுவனுக்கு 2வது கல்யாணம் நடந்தது. இதனால் பெரும் நிம்மதியும் சந்தோஷமும் அடைந்திருந்தார். தான் அதிகம் பாசம் வைத்த 2வது மகனின் வாழ்க்கை பூர்த்தி ஆனதைப் பார்த்து விட்டு அவர் கண் மூடியிருப்பது அவரது குடும்பத்தினரை பெரும் சோகத்தில் ஆழ்த்தியுள்ளது.

ஜீவாவின் மரணத்தின்போது இளையராஜா அருகில் இல்லை. அவர் திரைப்படப் பாடல் பதிவுக்காக ஹைதராபாத் சென்றிருந்தார். தகவல் அறிந்ததும் அவர் இன்று காலை சென்னை விரைந்து வந்தார். அவரைப் பார்த்ததும் அவரது குழந்தைகள் கதறியழுதனர்.

ஜீவாவின் மரணச் செய்தி திரையுலகினரையும் பெரும் சோகத்தில் ஆழ்த்தியுள்ளது. நடிகர் கமல்ஹாசன், இயக்குநர்கள் பாரதிராஜா, பாலுமகேந்திரா, கஸ்தூரி ராஜா, நடிகர் சிம்பு, நடிகை குஷ்பு உள்ளிட்ட பலரும் தி.நகரில் உள்ள இளையராஜாவின் வீட்டுக்குச் சென்று கண்ணீர் அஞ்சலி செலுத்தினர். அதேபோல நடிகர் சிவக்குமார் உள்ளிட்டோரும் அஞ்சலி செலுத்தினர். பாரதிராஜாவைப் பார்த்ததும் இளையராஜாவின் மகள் பவதாரணி கட்டிப் பிடித்து கதறி அழுதார். அவரைப் பார்த்தி பாரதிராஜாவும் கண்ணீர் விட்டு அழுதார். வீடே பெரும் சோகமாக காணப்படுகிறது. பல வருடங்களாக இளையராஜாவுடன் பேசுவதை நிறுத்தி விட்ட கவிஞர் வைரமுத்து இன்று ஜீவாவின் உடலுக்கு அஞ்சலி செலுத்துவதற்காக வீட்டுக்கு வந்தார். ஜீவாவுக்கு அஞ்சலி செலுத்திய அவர் அருகில் நின்றிருந்த இளையராஜாவிடம் சென்று ஆறுதல் கூறினார். அதேபோல யுவன் ஷங்கர் ராஜா உள்ளிட்டோருக்கும் அவர் ஆறுதல் கூறினார். இந்த சந்திப்பு அங்கிருந்தோரை நெகிழ வைத்தது.

இளையராஜா, ஜீவா ஆகியோருக்கு சொந்த ஊர் தேனிமாவட்டம் பண்ணைப்புரம் ஆகும். அங்கு ஜீவாவின் உடல் இன்று பிற்பகலுக்கு மேல் எடுத்துச் செல்லப்படுகிறது. நாளை இறுதிச் சடங்குகள் நடைபெறவுள்ளன.இதற்கான ஏற்பாடுகள் முடுக்கி விடப்பட்டுள்ளன

எதிர்பாராத விபத்து/நிகழ்வு போல தெரியல ஜீவாவின் மரணம். இப்போ இருக்கிற மருத்துவ வசதிகளை பயன்படுத்தி (செல்வந்தர்களாக இருக்கும் பட்சத்தில்) தொடர்ந்து உடல் நிலையை பரிசோதித்துக் கொண்டு வந்திருந்தால் இதுபோன்ற திடீர் நெஞ்சு வலிகளையெல்லாம் தவிர்த்திருக்கலாம். உயிரையே பறிக்கும் அளவிற்கு கொண்டு சென்றது ஒருவிதத்தில் உடல் நலம் பற்றிய விழிப்புணர்வு இல்லாமையா?

I read somewhere that she had bye-pass 5 years back. This is possibly a recurrence.

I don't think it was a case of negligence, death is unavoidable in spite of treatment / precaution etc. (Steve Jobs, with all his wealth & knowledge, could not survive to see his 60s)

A very basic fact : No one can see what's happening inside the skin :-(

A very complex (possibly the most complex in the physical universe) system is covered by thOl (apart from the variety of membranes inside, like the one around the cell) and even the most sophisticated equipment cannot identify everything that's happening inside.

Assuming such an equipment is available, even then, no one can be under 24 x 7 surveillance under such equipment :-(

Finally, even granting that (such an equipment / round-the-clock observation given), death cannot be stopped / avoided :-(

Miserable situation.

Like I mentioned in the post on 'udhaya geetham pAduvEn', all humans are running / walking / crawling to death, which is an eventuality.

I think it's worthwhile to consider in our hearts, on such occasions as the death of a loved one (in our case Maestro's wife now), where we are with our lives and how we can use the (unknown) balance time for the better.

(Sorry for the preachy tone, I'm just telling myself)

A woman has innate nurturing abilities that amazingly
Transform her without much advertisement. When she
Became a mother to a man, he will never know. Raaja has
not lost his wife alone but his second mother. The gap cannot
be easily filled by any of the things or concepts.
Time and his music will hopefully keep him diverted for
quicker recovery. Now it is upto his family to come together
and heal themselves. I offer my prayers to the almighty

இசைஞானி இளையராஜாவின் மனைவி ஜீவா, கடந்த 31-ம் தேதி மாரடைப்பால் மறைந்துவிட்டார். 1951-ல் பிறந்த ஜீவா, இளையராஜாவின் அக்காள் கமலத்தின் மகள். கார்த்திக் ராஜா, பவதாரிணி, யுவன் ஷங்கர் ராஜா என மூன்று இசை வாரிசுகள்!

ஜீவாவின் மறைவு குறித்து இளையராஜாவுக்கு நெருக்கமான சிலரிடம் விசாரித்தோம். ''இளையராஜா என்கிற விளக்குக்கு பிரசாசமாக வெளிச்சம் தந்தது, ஜீவா அம்மாள்தான். தன்னையே எண்ணெய்யாக எரியவைத்து... தன்னையே திரியாகவும் தீய்த்துக் கொண்டவர். கடந்த 10 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு அவருக்கு இதய ஆபரேஷன் நடந்தது. சிகிச்சை நடந்த ஒரே வாரத்தில், திருப்பதியில் மூத்த மகன் கார்த்திக் கல்யாணம் நடந்தது. டாக்டர்கள் தடுத்தும் அங்கு சென்று மகனின் திருமணத்தை நடத்தி வைத்தார்.

விஜயகாந்த் திருமணத்திற்கு பெரும் உதவி செய்தவர். ஏனென் றால் பிரேமலதாவின் உறவினர்கள் ஜீவாவுக்கு ரொம்ப நெருக்கம். அவர்கள், 'சினிமா நடிகராச்சே விஜயகாந்த் எப்படி..?’ என்று ஜீவா விடம் விசாரித்தனர். ஜீவாவோ, ''அந்தப் பையன் ரொம்ப நல்லவர்...'' என்று சர்டிஃபிகேட் கொடுத்தார். இசை நுணுக்கம் தெரிந்தவர் இளை யராஜா என்றால், கலை உணர்வு அதிகம் கொண்டவர் ஜீவா. தற்போது தியாராய நகரில் இருக்கும் வீட்டு நிலத்தை வாங்கியபோது, ராஜா கடும் பிஸியாக இருந்தார். அதனால், கணவரின் ரசனைக்கு உகந்ததாகக் கருங்கல் திண்டு, மேஜை, கல் தாமரை விளக்கு, வெள்ளை சலவைச் சுவர் என்று ஒவ்வொரு விஷயத்திலும் ஈடுபாட்டோடு வீட்டைக் கட்டி முடித்தார் ஜீவா. அதுவரை வீட்டுப்பக்கமே எட்டிப் பார்க்காத கணவரை கிரகப்பிரவேசம் நடப்பதற்கு முதல்நாள் அழைத்துப்போய் காட்டினார். ஆனந்தத்தில் அதிர்ந்துபோன ராஜா, 'இவ்ளோ பெரிய்ய வீடா...’ என்று திகைத்தார்.'' என்று கனத்த குரலில் சொன்னார்கள்.

வழக்கமாக சென்னை பிரசாத் ஸ்டுடியோவில் இசையமைக் கும் ராஜா, மனைவி இறந்தபோது, 'சாய்பாபா’ தெலுங்கு படத்தின் இசையமைப்புக்காக ஹைதராபாத் சென்று இருந்தார். உடனே திரும்ப இயலாமல் மறுநாள் காலை வீட்டுக்கு வந்தவர், அஞ்சலி செலுத்த வந்தவர்களிடம், 'யாரும் அழ வேண்டாம்’ என்று தடுத்தார் இளையராஜா. ஆனால், மனைவியின் உடலை மூன்று முறை சுற்றிவந்து நெற்றியில் கை வைத்தபோது, அவரே கதறிவிட்டார். கடைசியில் பண்ணைபுரத்தில் அம்மா சின்னத்தாய் சமாதிக்கு அருகில், மனைவி ஜீவாவை அடக்கம் செய்தார் இளையராஜா.

'கட்டியவள் போட்டதெல்லாம் வாய்க்கு ருசி... அவள் கட்டோடு போன பின்னே வாய்க்கரிசி. உள்ளதெல்லாம் உனக்காகச் கொடுத்துச் சென்றாள்... பொட்டோடு பூவை மட்டும் எடுத்து சென்றாள்...’ என்று சொல்லும் கண்ணதாசன் பாடல் வரிகள் எத்தனை உணர்வுபூர்வமானது!

அகி மியூஸிக் தொடங்கி இப்பொழுது ஐந்து வருடங்கள் நிறைவடைந்திருக்கிறது. இந்த ஐந்து வருடமும் மிகப்பெரிய போராட்டக் காலங்கள். இன்னமும்தான். எப்படி இந்த இசைக் கனவு எனக்கு நனவானது என்பது ஒரு சுவாரசியமான கதை. இளையராஜா அவர்களை தவிர்த்து சொல்லிவிட முடியாத கதை. இளையராஜாவை எனது வாழ்விலிருந்து அகற்ற முடியாது. அதேபோல் அகி மியூஸிக்கின் வளர்ச்சியையும், இளையராஜாவை தவிர்த்து என்னால் நினைவுக்கூற முடியாது.

எனக்கு இளையராஜாவின் இசை 90களில்தான் அறிமுகமாகியது. ஒரு தமிழனுக்கு இது எப்படி சாத்தியம் என்ற கேள்வி உங்களுக்கு எழலாம். அதை நான் விளக்கினால் அது இந்தக் கட்டுரையை வேறு தளத்திற்குக் கொண்டுப் போக நேரும். அதனால் அதை தவிர்க்கிறேன்.

இப்பொழுது இந்த வாய்ப்பைக் காரணம் காட்டி முதலீடு தேடினேன். ரமணரின் மீது பெரும் ஈடுபாடு கொண்ட அதே சமயம் எனக்கு வழிகாட்டியாகவும் என் நலவிரும்பியாகவும் இருக்கும் டாக்டர் சண்முக சிவா அவர்கள் உதவ முன்வந்தார். பிறகு நிறுவனம் அமைப்பது, சிடி தயாரிப்பது, விநியோகம் என்று எல்லா செலவுகளும் மலைப்போல் தெரிந்தது. மீண்டும் இளையராஜாவிற்கு போன் செய்து, பத்தாயிரம் வெள்ளி எனக்கு சிரமமாக உள்ளது. ஐந்தாயிரம் வெள்ளி தருகிறேன் என்றேன். வேறெதுவும் சொல்லாமல் சரி என்றார்.

மார்ச், 2005 இல் நான் மீண்டும் சென்னை சென்றேன். ரமணாஸ்ரமத்திற்கு ராயல்டி தரவும், கொஞ்சம் சீடிகள் தரவும். அதுவரையில் திருவண்ணாமலை கோவிலுக்குள் நான் நுழைந்ததில்லை. முதல் முறை சென்ற போதுக்கூட அவசரமாக ரமணாஸ்ரமம் சென்று அவசரமாக சென்னை திரும்பி விட்டேன். அன்று ஏழுமலை என்ற ரமணாஸ்ரம நண்பர் என்னை வற்புறுத்தி திருவண்ணாமலை கோவிலுக்கு அழைத்தார். இவ்வளவு தூரம் வந்து தமிழ் நாட்டின் பிரபலமான கோவில்களில் ஒன்றான திருவண்ணாமலையை தரிசிக்காது செல்வது பெரிய இழப்பு என்றார்.

அப்பொழுது நான் வைணவத்தில் அதிக நம்பிக்கையும் பிடிப்பும் உள்ளவன். மறந்தும் பிற தெய்வம் தொழாதவன். எனக்கு வர மனமில்லை என்று சொல்ல மனம் வரவில்லை. அவரின் அன்பு வற்புறுத்தல் அத்தகையது. முதல் முறைவந்தபோதும் அவர் இதுபோல் வற்புறுத்தி, பிறகு மலையை சுற்றிப் பார்க்க ஒப்புக்கொண்டேன். காரிலேயே சுற்றிவிட்டு வந்துவிட்டேன். இன்றோ முதல் முறையாக திருவண்ணாமலை கோவிலுக்குள் செல்கிறேன். எனக்கு சிறப்பு பூஜைக்கு ஏற்பாடு ஆகியிருந்தது. உள்ளே அழைத்து பெரிய லிங்கத்தின் முன் அமர சொன்னார்கள். அனைத்தும் எனக்கு வேடிக்கையாகவும் பொருளியலாகவும் தெரிந்தது. ஆனால் சிவ லிங்கத்தின் முன் அமர்ந்தவுடன், காரணம் தெரியாமல் கண்கள் நனைந்தன. இதுவரை எங்கெல்லாமோ, யார் யாரிடமோ நான் தேடிய அன்பு இங்கே கல்லாய் இறுகிப் போய், இத்தனை நாள் என் வரவிற்காக காத்திருப்பது போல் இருந்தது. என்னால் விளங்கிக் கொள்ள* முடியாத உணர்வு. எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் காரணம் தேடும் மனம், என் கண்ணீருக்கு அறிவியல் அல்லது உளவியல் காரணம் காண முடியாமல் திணறியது.

இத்தனை உணர்வுகளையும் நான் முன்னமே அனுபவித்திருக்கிறேன், இதே போல் கண்ணீர் விட்டிருக்கிறேன் என்பது மட்டும் நிச்சயமாக என்னால் உணர முடிந்தது. சட்டென்று என் சிந்தை முழுவதும் பரவியது ஹவ் டு நேம் இட் என்ற இசையின் நாதம். திருவண்ணாமலையில் நான் உணர்ந்தது 10 வருடங்களுக்கு முன் ஹவ் டூ நேம் இட் என்ற இசையை நான் முதல் முறை கேட்ட போது எழுந்த அதே உணர்வு நிலை. அது ஏன் என்ற காரணம் எனக்கு விளங்கவில்லை. ஆனால் அந்த அனுபவம் இளையராஜாவின் மீதான விளக்கமுடியாது சில நம்பிக்கைகளையும் மரியாதையையும் என்னுள் உருவாக்கியது. மதம், கடவுள் என்று நான் கொண்டிருந்த அத்தனை நம்பிக்கைகளையும் கட்டுடைத்து விட்டது. ஏதோ ஒரு சக்தி என்னிலிருந்து இந்த இசையை வெளிக்கொண்டுவருகிறது என்று அவர் எப்பொழுதும் கூறுவது அர்த்தம் நிறைந்ததாய் நான் உணர்ந்த நாள் அது.

பிதற்றத் தொடங்கியிருக்கிறான் அகிலன் என்று பலர் நினைக்ககூடும். ஆனால் இன்னமும் இந்த அனுபவம் என்னால் விளங்கிக் கொள்ள முடியாத ஒன்று. முற்பிறவி தொடர்பு, ஆன்மீகம் என்றெல்லாம் என்னால் நம்ப முடியவில்லை. பல வருடங்கள் மறந்துபோன இசை ஏன் என் நினைவிற்கு வரவேண்டும்? பரீட்சயம் இல்லாத சைவ தள*த்தில் நான் ஏன் அளவிட முடியா அன்பால் அரவணைக்கப்பட வேண்டும்? என்பது எனக்கு தெரியவில்லை. ஆனால் இளையராஜாவின் ஆன்மீகம் போலியல்ல, அவரின் திருவண்ணாமலை பயணமும் அவர் ஏற்றுக்கொண்ட தோற்றமும் நாடகமல்ல என்பதை நான் நம்பத் தொடங்கிய, எனக்கு விளங்கத்தொடங்கிய நாட்கள் அவை.

இளையராஜாவின் குரு ரமண கீதம், இத்தாலி இசைப் பயணம், திருவாசகம், மியூசிக் மெசய்யா, அம்மா பாமாலை என்று 3 வருடத்தில் மொத்தம் 6 ஆல்பங்கள் மட்டுமே வெளியிட்டிருந்தேன். காரணம், பெரிய முதலீடு இல்லாமல் வரும் பணத்தை அலுவலக நிர்வாகத்திற்கு செலவு செய்வதும், வியாபாரத்திற்காக வாங்கிய கடனை செலுத்துவதிலும், மீதப் பணத்தில் ஆல்பம் வெளியிடுவதும், இப்படிதான் எனது தொழில் போய் கொண்டிருந்தது. திருவாசகத்தைக் கூட மிக சொற்ப முன்பணத்திற்குதான் இளையராஜா தந்தார். தமிழ் மையத்தின் அனுமதியோடு, அகிலன் தான் வெளியிட வேண்டும் என்ற கோரிக்கையோடு. அதற்கும் டாக்டர் சண்முகசிவாதான் எனக்கு உதவி செய்தார். 2006ல் ஏ.ஆரின் காட்பாதரையும் ரிலீஸ் செய்திருந்தேன்.

2007க்குள் வியாபாரத்தை விஸ்தாரமாக்க இயலாமல், முதலீடும் இல்லாமல், குடும்பம் நடத்த போதிய வருமானமும் இல்லாம், பொருளாதாரம் மோசமாகி, கடனாகி, மீண்டு வர முடியாத அளவு நான் நிலைகுலைந்து போனேன். தன்முனைப்பு அற்று, விரக்தியடைந்திருந்தேன். எனது வாழ்வின் இருண்ட காலங்கள் அவை. குடும்பத்திலிருந்து தனித்து விட்டேன். உறவினர்கள் கூடி அவமானப்படுத்தினார்கள். மனைவியுடன் விவாகரத்துக்கும் முயற்சி செய்தேன். எல்லோராலும் நம்பிக்கை இழக்கப்பட்டு கைவிடப்பட்டவனாகவே இருந்தேன். ஒன்றரை வருடங்கள் இளையராஜாவிற்கு ராயல்டி எதுவும் தரவில்லை. காரணம் சொல்லி வந்தேன். மே மாதம் சிங்கப்பூர் வந்திருந்தவர் என்னை தொடர்புக்கொள்ள முடியாமல் இரண்டு நாட்களுக்குப் பிறகு மலேசியாவில் உள்ள அவருடைய சில தொடர்புகள் மூலம் என்னைத் தொடர்பு கொண்டு, கோபித்து கொண்டு, உடனே என்னை சிங்கப்பூர் வந்து அவரைப் பார்க்கச் சொன்னார். எனக்கு அவரிடம் என் நிலையை விளக்க மனமில்லை.

சிங்கப்பூர் போகும் போது எனது போதாத நேரம் அவரை பார்ப்பதாக இருந்த நேரத்தைவிட மூன்று மணி நேரம் தாமதமாக சென்றேன். அவரைச் சந்தித்து, என்னால் இந்த சில காலமாக ராயல்டி தர முடியவில்லை, காரணம் சில பணப் பிரச்சனைகள் என்றேன். அவர் என் மீது நம்பிக்கை இழந்துவிடக் கூடாது என்பதில் உறுதியாக இருந்தேன். அதனால் எனது இயலாமையை முடிந்தளவு மறைத்தேன். முடிந்த அளவு அகி மியூசிகின் நம்பகமான சில திட்டங்களை விளக்கி அது நமக்கு நல்ல எதிர்காலத்தை உருவாக்கும் என்று விளக்கினேன். எனது தோல்வி அவரை என் மீது நம்பிக்கை இழக்க செய்துவிடக்கூடாது என்பதில் கவனமாக இருந்தேன். ஏதும் பேசாமல் என்னையே பார்த்திருந்தவர், பிறகு வழியனுப்பிவிட்டார். அன்று அவர் என்னிடம் எதுவும் பேசவில்லை.

பிறகு மலேசியாவில் ஜொகூருக்கு கிளம்பி இரவு அங்கு தங்கினேன். சிங்கப்பூரில் தங்க பணமில்லை. முடிந்தது எனக்கும் அவருக்குமான உறவு என்று நினைத்தேன். மறுநாள் காலையில் என்னை அழைத்து, மீண்டும் ஹோட்டலுக்கு வரும்படி கூறினார். எனக்கு விளங்கவில்லை. போனேன். மீண்டும் இரண்டு மணி நேரம் தாமதம். எனக்கும் இளையராஜாவிற்கும் இருக்கும் உறவு இன்றோடு முடிந்தது என்பது உறுதியானது போல் இருந்தது. எனது கடைசி நம்பிக்கையும் விட்டுப் போனது. நான் அவரை சந்தித்தபோது, அவர் மதியம் சாப்பிடாமல் காத்திருந்தார். கூட இருந்த இரண்டு பேர் என்னை ஏதோபோல் பார்த்தார்கள். உங்களுக்காக சாப்பிடாமல் காத்திருக்கிறேன் என்று கூறி என்னை அழைத்துக் கொண்டு போனார். வழியில் காரில் வந்த அவருடைய நண்பரிடம் என்னை அறிமுகம் செய்துவிட்டு இவரிடம் உங்களைப் பற்றி சொல்லியிருக்கிறேன். உங்கள் தொழிலில் இவர் முதலீடு செய்வார் என்று கூறினார். அந்த நண்பரும் பல கேள்விகள் கேட்டு இறுதியில் முதலீடு செய்ய சம்மதித்தார். உணவு முடிந்து ஹோட்டலுக்கு சென்றபின், 'உங்களுக்கு என்னால் ஆன உதவி, நீங்கள் முன்னுக்கு வருவதை பார்க்கனும்' என்று சுருக்கமாக சொல்லி கிளம்பிட்டார். என் கண்கள் ஈரமாகியது. நான் சம்பாதித்த எல்லாவற்றையும் இழந்திருந்தேன். எல்லோருடைய நம்பிக்கையையும் இழந்திருந்தேன். குடும்பமும் என்னை கைவிட்டிருந்தது. எந்த நம்பிக்கையில் இளையராஜா எனக்கு இந்த உதவியை செய்கிறார் என்று எனக்கு விளங்கவில்லை. இன்னும் என்னிடம் அவர் எந்த காரணத்தால் நம்பிக்கை வைத்திருக்கிறார் என்று தெரியவில்லை. அதிலும் நான் எனது நிலைப் பற்றி எதுவும் சொல்லவும் இல்லை. என்னிடம் ஏன் இந்த தனிப்பட்ட அக்கறை என்று மனம் பலமிழந்து நின்றிருந்தேன்.

இளையராஜாவின் முன்பு எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் ஒத்துக்கொண்ட அந்த நண்பர், பல்வேறு காரணங்களை சொல்லி முதலீடு செய்வதை தவிர்த்து வந்தார். அதை இளையராஜாவிற்கு தெரியப்படுத்தி விட்டு, வேறு வழிகளில் முயற்சித்து வந்தேன். இது நடந்த ஒரு ஐந்து மாதங்களுக்குப் பிறகு எனது அலுவலகத்தையும் காலி செய்ய சொல்லி நோட்டீஸ் வந்துவிட்டது. வேலையாட்களை எல்லாம் நிறுத்தினேன். நான் மட்டும் தனிமையில் எனது அலுவலகத்தில் இருண்டுப் போய் இருந்தேன். 31 டிசம்பர் 2007. வருடத்தின் கடைசி நாள். வியாபாரத்திலிருந்து ஒதுங்கி விடலாம் என்று நினைத்தேன். எங்காவது போய் ஒளிந்து கொள்ளலாம் போலிருந்தது. போராடியது போதும் என்று தோன்றியது. கேப்பிடலிஸத்தின் (Capitalism) நிதர்சணமாய், பணக்காரர்கள் மட்டுமே பணம் பண்ண முடியும் என்று நம்பத் தொடங்கினேன். அப்பொழுது ஒரு குரியர் வருகிறது. தனது எல்லா உரிமத்தையும் அகி மியூசிக்கிற்கு ஒப்படைத்து ஒப்பந்தம் ஒன்றை கையெழுத்திட்டு அனுப்பியிருந்தார் இளையராஜா. என் வாழ்நாளில் மறக்கவே முடியாத ஒரு நாள் அது. எந்த முன் பணமும் செலுத்தவில்லை. அவர் அறிமுகப்படுத்திய முதலீட்டாளரும் மறுத்திருந்த நிலையில், என்னை தூக்கிவிடுவது போல் ஒரு குரியர், அவரிடமிருந்து. மரணப் படுக்கையில் இருந்தவனுக்கு முதலுதவிப் போல் இருந்தது. நிமிர்ந்து மீண்டு வர இன்னொரு வாய்ப்பு. ஒருமுறை அவரை சந்தித்து, ஒவ்வொரு முறையும் எனது வாழ்வின் முக்கியமானத் தருணங்களில் அவருடைய இசைதான் என்னை ஆட்கொண்டது, நிதானப்படுத்தியது என்றபோது. 'எல்லாம் ரமணரிடமிருந்துதான் வருகிறது. என்னுடைய இசையால்தான் என்று நீங்கள் கருதினால், அந்த இசையும் ரமணரிடமிருந்து வருவதுதானே. நான் ஒரு கருவிதான்' என்றார். இதில் நான் எதையும் எனது கற்பனையில் எழுதவில்லை. நிகழ்ந்தவை. நான் பார்த்த இளையராஜாவின் இன்னொரு முகம். நான் பழகிய, மீடியாக்களுக்குத் தெரியாத இன்னொரு மனம்.

ஜெயமோகனிடம் ஒரு முறை அகி மியூசிக் உருவானதை நான் கூறிய போது, சினிமாத் துறையில் இளையராஜாவிற்கு மட்டும்தான் இப்படியொரு முகம் இருப்பதாக தான் கேள்விப்பட்டிருக்கிறேன் என்று இயக்குனர் பாலாவின் அனுபவத்தை சொன்னார். நடிகர் நாசரும் அவருடைய அவதாரம் படம் பணமில்லாது முடங்கிய போது, பணம் பெறாமல் இசையமைத்ததை தி மியூசிக் மெசைய்யா வெளியீட்டு விழாவில் கூறினார்.

இன்று அகி மியூசிக் அடைந்திருக்கும் உயரம், கிடைத்திருக்கும் வெளிச்சம், இளையராஜா என்ற ஒருவரை கொண்டே அடையப்பட்டது. இன்றைய சினிமா சூழல் பலப் படைப்பாளிகளை வியாபார ரீதியாக முன்னிறுத்தினாலும், இசையில் இளையராஜாவின் இடம் இன்னும் யாராலும் நெருங்க முடியாத உச்சத்தில் நிரந்தரமாக இருக்கிறது. இசை மேதமையில் மட்டுமல்ல, வியாபார ரீதியாகவும்.

இத்தனை வருடங்கள் தாண்டியும் தமிழ் மனங்களை அரவணக்கும் ஒரு இசையென்றால் அது இளையராஜாவின் இசையாக தலைமுறைகள் தாண்டி இன்றுவரை நீண்டு வருவதற்கு காரணம், அவரால் வெளிப்படையாக வெளிக்காட்டப்படாமல் இருக்கும் அன்புதான். அதுதான் அவரது இசையின் ஆதாரமாக இருந்து வருகிறது. எனது முந்தைய ஒரு கட்டுரையில் தமிழர்கள் அவர்களுடைய அடையாளங்களை இளையராஜாவின் இசையில் மீட்டெடுக்கிறார்கள் என்றேன். ஆனால் உணர்வு நிலையில் இருந்து யோசிக்கும் போது, இளையராஜாவின் இசை நம்மை அரவணைக்கிறது, ஆறுதல் அளிக்கிறது என்றுதான் சொல்ல தோன்றுகிறது, பலரும் சொல்வதும் இதைதான். அதுதான் அவருடைய நிஜ இயல்பு

Just back from "Sri Rama Rajyam" premier show. Spellbinding score by our Maestro. I don't think we have ever heard such a melodious background score in any other Indian film so far. IR lifts the film to international standards. Movie itself is near perfect. Kudos to Dir Bapu, Nayantara, and the visual effects team. Sri Rama Rajyam sets the standards so high, that it seems almost impossible for any other film in future to match this, especially, in the music department

Maestro Ilayaraja once again proves that he's master in background musical score. The background score is very apt and true to Ilayaraja's skill and fame for re-recording. Songs are mellifluous and rendered meticulously too. In fact, this is one of his best musical scores ever in his long career. Director Bapu cleverly used Ilayaraja's songs for narration instead of padyalu (verses) as we had seen in earlier devotional movies. Lyrics by Jonnavithula are apt to the situation while being contemporary in the language and style

Even in that not-so-positive review, there's an excellent bottom line, that sums it up in one word - "Ilaya-rajyam". :) (Check out the telugu version of that review)

Looks like almost all sites have given excellent reviews, except one or two. (IMO, it's expected, there is not much for front-benchers in this film - No item songs, no comedy tracks, no jump-cuts, zoom-in, zoom-outs etc)

I must say that we are unlikely to witness such classics in future. Even if IR can deliver something that beats this, we do need a director of Bapu's caliber and artistic touch, to do justice to IR's music. Bapu is 80+ already. I doubt if he would make anymore films.

பாரதிராஜாவுக்கு வேறு அனுபவம் தேவை பட்டதாம்.. வேடிக்கையாய் இல்லை? என்னமோ இளையராஜா வேறு கிரகத்திலிருந்து வந்த மாதிரி பேசறாரு இவரு? இளையராஜாவிடம் இருந்து இவர் அடைந்து கொண்டதையும், அடைந்து கொண்ட கால கட்டத்தையும் நாங்க மறக்கவில்லை.

பிரஸ் மீட்ல ஆயிரம் கேள்வி கேட்பாங்க, அதுக்கு சரியாய் பதில் சொல்றது ரொம்ப அவசியம். "சின்ன வயதில் அந்தப் படங்களைப் பார்த்து பாடல்கள் கேட்டதால் வரும் உணர்வுதான். அந்தப் பாடல்கள் அப்படியே மனசுல பதிஞ்சு போச்சு ரசிகர்களுக்கு - பாரதிராஜா"

Here is an interesting incident that was told by the producer of Sri Rama Rajyam-Yelamanchi Sai baba.

''Ilayaraja sir returned to chennai due to the sudden demise of his wife Jeeva . 5 days after that i sent the climax scenes of SRR to Ilayaraja sir for rerecording and also to know if there can be any corrections or scope for improvement in the DTS mixing or editing.

The climax has the scene where sita is taken into earth by the Goddess Bhoodevi .
I was watching the edited parts of the movie and suddenly i got a call from Ilayaraja sir.He asked me ''isnt fate so alarming?''....i was silent as i didnt know what to say.....he then said isnt it alarming that just after i went for the funeral of my wife i had to do the rerecording for a scene where sita goes into earth with Lord Rama expressing his anguish for sita......''........when the call completed i had tears in my eyes and then i understood why Ilayaraja sir is the numero uno in Indian film music''..................

Friends i think this incident shows how seriously Raja sir takes rerecording which always shows in all his movies.....

நன்றி மறப்பது நன்றன்று. பாரதிராஜா, நீங்க அன்றே மறந்து விட்டீர்கள். சாரி.நீங்க ஒண்ணை புரிஞ்சிக்கணும். இளையராஜாவோடு சின்ன வயசில் திரிந்து விட்டால் இசை ஞானம் வந்துவிடுமா என்ன? அப்போதும் கற்பூர வாசனையை தெரியாதவர் இருக்கத்தான் செய்வர். அதன் வெளிப்பாடே பாரதிராஜாவின் பேட்டி. விடுங்க பாஸ். நமக்கு ஆயிரம் சோலி இருக்கு

"இளையராஜாவுடன் சேர்ந்து பணியாற்நவேண்டுமா என நாங்க தானே பேசணும், மீடியா ஏன் பேசுது?" என்று கேட்டாரே, அது வாஸ்தவமான பேச்சு. அத்தோடு நிறுத்தி இருக்கலாம். இந்த நிருபப்பசங்களும் சும்மா இருப்பதில்லை. எப்ப பாரு எவன் கெடச்சாலும் நோண்டுறது!

It was pretty clear when BR chose not to have IR for the first time - i.e. for vEdham pudhidhu.

He preferred VM over IR. Matter simple.

It was definitely not for "new anubhavam" with that Devendran, who practically mimic-ed IR. (There are people who don't know the composer for that movie and automatically group 'kaNNukkuL nooRu nilavA idhu oru kanavA' under IR's list ).

After a couple of failures, one with even the mighty Rajinikanth, he tried to patch up with IR ("ennuyirththOzhan"). There were some good songs but people in general didn't warm up to the combo like they did in the days of MM or KK. So BR was clearly seen to be in the "waning" phase while IR's journey continued as usual.

Ofcourse BR had a hit in KC and critical acclaim in K with ARR but these two were more like 'aNaiyiRadhukku mun kozhundhu vittu eriyum' lamp. His subsequent works - including the ones with ARR - failed to attract masses.

We'll have to wait and see what BR does with AKKV. GVP'll be able to give catchy music no doubt - with or without BR - but whether BR can still attract audience is doubtful.

அவங்கவங்களுக்கு ஆயிரம் இடங்களில் (ராஜாவை தேர்வு செய்ய வேண்டிய இடங்களில் ) காம்ப்ரமைஸ் செய்துகொள்கிறார்கள். கமல், ரஜினி, பாலா சிறந்த உதாரணங்கள்.

பாரதிராஜா - ராஜா சேர்ந்தால் நல்லாயிருக்கும். சேரவில்லையென்றால் ஒன்றும் நட்டமில்லை. இருக்கவே இருக்கு அவர்களது கூட்டணியில் கிடைக்கப்பெற்ற பொக்கிஷங்கள்.

It is unfortunate , that flim directors choose music directors of their choice , ignoring people's wishes. BR says why media is discussing about the combo... then who will discuss ,, you are taking a movie not for you and your family. It is for the people to watch and we have the right to expect the qualit in it. Now the flim industry is become like a one day cricket match , they want to see the collections in the opening days ,, who cares quality and history... But the people who contributed to the growth of non-nativity music deserve's to hear the recent songs...

Oh my! Sonu Kakkar is the Hindi version of singer Malathi. She is the loud throated singer who sang the famous "babujee zaraa dheere chalo" (from film Dum). But her tweet says that she is recording with raaja 'again'. When was the first time?

That would not have been the case in the initial years.

For example, do you think Sridhar would have simply accepted Raja's score for iLamai oonjalAdukiRadhu?

Also, there had been a marked difference for his scores for initial movies of Mahendran when compared to the others of the same time period. I think there was some amount of "demanding".

It's possible he got into 'nAn pOttadhu dhAn music - kEkkaRadhu onga thalai vidhi' mode during later years (especially after he became a sAmiyAr and started claiming that all his music was divinely inspired which chamchAs too happily accepted)...

Both are so true.
Additionally over time he restricted himself to Tamil or south indian music alone and did not concentrate or aim for international collaboration etc. But unbeknownst to him, the world was changing so much.

Media, anti-illayaraja ppl, and mainly we fans shud stop doing character analysis of Raja. for that matter, any artist, not just him. Weather he attends more functions or not, if he attends, weather he talks crap or sensible, all this things are out of music.

Illayaraja is not famous for giving speeches and interviews. His area is music. Lets confine him only within that space and totally come out of other things.

Even at his peak, there were directors who could "demand" things from him.

For e.g. MR

There are at least two things I've read about (from the media / tfmpage)

1. Forcing to change the tune for 'then pANdichcheemaiyilE' (the first tune later became 'nilA adhu vAnaththu mElE' :rotfl:)
2. Asking not to use tablA at all for AN songs

And the results did show - MR got always top class stuff from IR, both songs & BGM. IR himself had acknowledged in 'varalARRU suvadukaL' that MR was one of the few directors who shot movies in the same manner as explained during discussions. In other words, MR gained the respect of IR and could ask/demand changes.

And I don't think MR was the only person. (Kamal quickly comes to mind as another). So, it wasn't 100% 'nAn koduththadha eduththukkittu OdippOyidu'.

One more important thing.. he did give a choice of tunes to directors all the time. People should have a taste for the tunes. For eg. somebody like MGR will be picky about tunes and lyrics. Not many directors have that sort of passion for things. I am not even sure whether new Directors are capable of identifying raagams. But I also feel there was a little less focus on orchestration and lot more on doing things .. making tune fast enough.
Oh well.. we have lots of good stuff from him and very that we can complain about.

Every musician classical as well MDs of movies knows IR.(North-South-East-West) in India even though he did not do much movies in non-southern languages. Shanai expert Baalesh(I think) when mentioning about Hey Ram song by Ahay Chakraborthi, he mentioned he wanted to bring his daughter to IR to get his blessings. Don't know whether you read that Article.

May be Ustad(or someother Sarangi expert if they exist) once made a statement regarding IR in comparison to ARR. He watched when ARR was with IR troup learning and he told he modernised what he learnt very nicely. He also said however Guru is guru in dealing with Ragas and Sishya is Sishya.(I read it long time back. I think it is Ustad only). But even content is not important. But how they know him to that extent of taking his side so much is surprise to me too.

I know Haripraskash Chaurasia worked with him on classical Albums atleast. He is another guy having very good respect for IR.

These two classical artists, don't know how they have such a high regard for IR even though I did not hear them working with him. Now Vishal mentioning IR itself is a big thing. Sontanu Mitra was acknowledging IR as very great asking Shreya Goshal's experience with IR. He commands a very high respect both in Movie and classical world.

Just to correct what Ustad said or whoever mentioned about the relationship between IR and ARR. There is no guru-sishyan relationship between them. ARR simply played an instrument for Raja like he used to work for many other music directors.

Only difference is, not all instrumentalists turned out to be a successful music director like ARR.
