Hi L,
I don't know whether this recipe will be like hotel sambar. But I am sure this will taste good.
Thoor Dal 1/2 a cup
Moong Dal 1/2 a cup
Dried red /green chillies 3-5 according to your taste
Onion 1/2 of a big onion(Julian strips)
Tommotto big 1 and 1/2
Cumin seed 1/2 tea spoon
Fenugreek may be 1/4 tea spoon
mustard seed 1/4 tea spoon
kadalai maavu 1/2 tea spoon(make this a liquid with water without any lumps)
Cook the dals(grams). Keep it aside. In a frying pan heat a 1/2 table spoon of oil. Then allow the mustard seed, fenugreek, curry leaves, and cumin seed to pop then add the broken red chillies if you prefer it. Then smash the tommotto and fry the paste in the oil, till the oil comes out. Then add the cooked dals, if you prefer to have green chillies cut them, and kadalai mavu to the fried incredients. If you like add some commercial sambar powder, the brand you like. I always use Metro Sambar powder from Madurai. Have them all boil for only five to seven minutes. Over boiling will spoil the soup. I hope you would like this.My moms recipe.

Hi L,
This is Deborah again. I forgot to give the measurement for Salt. And forgot to write when do you have to add Onion. Through the onion after the seeds poped in the oil. Add the salt at last will make the sambar tastier.
