hi,
I am a tamilian, who is interested in learning
Srilankan veg recepies.
I do make "TENGAI PAAL KUZHAMBU" (Srilankan food) which is very tasty.
Anybody can say how to go about making
SODI, or other srilankan veg recepies?

Hi,
Could you please post the recipe for "Thengai paal kuzhambu"? I don't have the exact measurements for the ingredients for Sothi. But it generally goes this way. Mustard, Black gram dhal and fenugreek seeds for tempering. After that you have to add diced onions and green chilies. When the onions are translucent add the tomatoes and let it cook for a few mins. Then add the second extract of coconut milk and let it cook for a few mins. Add salt. Add the first extract and remove from heat after a min.

thx for ur reply. Is this sodi to be served with rice noodles?
I think TENGAI PAAL KUZHAMBU I make is more or less like sodhi, except
i dont use tomatoes.
PROCEDURE FOR
TENGAI PAAL KUZHAMBU.
Ingredients
Vegetables cut in 1.5 inch pieces: Drumstick, potatoes, Onions (500 grams totally)
Optional: Beans, Carrots,(Basically english vegetables, one can try it out for variation!)
Green Chillies : chopped vertically 6 to 7 nos
Ginger : Chopped thin, vertically into 1.5 inch pieces
Cocunut : 1
Grind coconut and extract its milk in 3 stages. Keep the 3 extracts separately.
Mustard : 1/2 spoon
Curry leaves : a few
Procedure:
Heat oil in the pan and allow the mustard to splutter, add ginger and green chillies,
when They become tender, add onions.
When onions becomes translucent, add the vegetables and allow it to cook in 3rd (thin
milk extract) extract. When the vegetables are semi cooked, (say after 10 minutes),
add the second extract, and allow it to cook and boil further. After 5 minutes add the
first extract (Thick one) and allow it to cook till the the volume is reduced to half.
Garnish with curry leaves.
It would look very condensed, and oil will float on the surface. (NOT VERY HEALTHY TO EAT
ON DAY TO DAY BASIS, Once a month is okei.)
(Depending on each one's preference, coconuts or vegetables can be included.
1.5 coconut would make it very sweetish and tasty. If u include as less as 250 grams of veg
for 1 coconut then again the coconut's rich taste can be cherished.People who love spicy food
can include more chillies and ginger.)
This can be served with rice and potato chips.

Dear Shakthi,
There are few different way of making Sothi, One way is by frying 1 onions,1tsp fenugreek,2 or 3 dry red chillies, 1 tomotes and curry leaves, for few miniutes until the onions become tender,then you add little water or 2nd coconut milk, salt, little turmeric powder, very little tamarind juic , let it boil for a while, then you add 1 cup of thick coconut milk,mix it, take it off the fire before its boil. if you let the sodi boil after adding Thick milk, it will curdle. This is one way of making Sodi.this Sodi will go nicely with String hopper or even with rice.

But sodi is used to be without chilli powder.
TENGAI PAAL KUZHAMBU also could be made with different vegetables. Even u can with vengayam or ulli ( it is called venthaya kuzhambu )
