Could you please suggest the brand name to buy Raw rice for idli in US Indian stores. I usually make idli using 3 cups of parboiled rice and 1 cup urad dal. It comes out well. I wanted to try making idlis using 1 cup raw rice, 2 cup parboiled rice and 1 cup urad dal. Can basmati rice be used as raw rice. Thanks.

Have u tried Uncle Ben's rice? I heard from my friends that though it is little expensive, the results will be good. Hope it is raw rice only. Pls check in american stores.

I use 2.5 cups idli rice (indian stores), 1 cup sona masoori rice (indian stores) and 1 cup whole urad dal (peeled) witha litle methi. I usually grind it a little bit finer than most ppl usually do for idli batter (as i use the same for dosa too). Ferment in a warmed oven overnight and you get nice fluffy idlis.

You can use long grain rice ( not parboiled ) available in any US grocery shops. i usually use " canilla" brand. Idlys and dosas come out well

Why dont u use par boiled rice instead of boiled rice? Par boiled rice-in all aspects, it is good for our body.
I use 4 : 1-ponni par boiled rice: urad dhal for idly.
Heard that swagat(not sure) is also equally good to make idlies.

Hello R,
Thanks for the suggestion. But at present they don't have ponni par boiled rice in stock. I'll surely try when i get it. My mother use to make soft idlis and tastey dosas with the ratio you have given. But i find it difficult as we don't get proper rice variety and aslo the climate. Any way, i let you know the out come when i get one.

Since we get here in NJ easily that brand rice and majority of the Indians are using the same, I thought that u must be getting it there too.

May be i'll try in other 2 Indian stores. I think as it is used by many people, it gets over early than other brand. Meantime i'll try with boiled rice.
