Hi,
I make the hot pongal or Ven pongal (i guess that's what they call) a little differently.
Ingredients:
rice 1 cup
Water 31/2 cups
moong dal 1/4 - 1/2 cup(You can decide on what you want here - more protein put 1/2 cup)
pepper - 10 -15 (depending on how hot you want)
Jeera - 1 tsp
Ginger - 1 inch cut into very small pieces or shreds
Hing - 2 pinches
Cashewnuts - a few.
Ghee - 4 Tbs
Salt - as per taste
Turmeric - a pinch
Grated dry coconut (Copra) - 1/4 cup
Method:
Dry roast moong dall for about 5 minutes. (Should not become brown) Put moong dall, rice , water, salt, turmeric in a vessel and cook it. (Alternately, you can use pressure cooker) After it is done, in a separate pan, heat ghee. Add hing, jeera, crushed pepper, ginger, cashewnuts. Add the cooked rice & dall mixture and mix it well. If the mixture is very thick, you can add a little bit of water now. At the end, add dry coconut gratings. Pongal is ready. You can serve it with coconut chutney. I'll post the sweet pongal recipe a little later. Got to go now.

Like a lot others, my work requires me to sit staring at the monitor for hours together. I got into a `dry-eye' problem a couple of months ago, affecting my vision badly. A lot of people have this trouble and go in for eye-drops. On asking around, i found that it is more due to deficiency of essential fatty acids which got compounded by staring at the monitor. I found that i was missing sufficient dhalls in my lazy-bachelor diet, and started eating more varieties of dhall.
Why that issue comes in this thread.... is because i found that paasi paruppu (moong dhall) is a very important part of diet. Whenever i cook and eat moong dhall, my eyes feel better, (no illusions), my far sight improves a lot. Nowadays I try to include it as straight dhall, or by making payasam out of it. Moong dhall is a real good stuff.. so eat a lot of pongal.
