My grandma always called that jelabi, jangiri cloth "ret". It is actually a very "strong" cloth two layers with a lot of circular stitches and the hole in the middle had reinforced stitchings like a buttonhole. Tried looking up ret and wret but the dictionaries dont mention jelabi :-) so what is the etymology here?

'Rettu' was originaly a thick linen cloth.
In later times, it was used to mean canvas cloth.

Dr.Jay Bee how about posting interesting things here?<<<<<
That is a good idea.
That can be done within a new thread under South Indian Cooking.
Perhaps, 'Jeep' is a proper name? Jeep is the acronym for 'general pupose'. The word was coined for a light-weight, hardy, four-wheel drive, open, vehicle that was fast and stable, and could go over rough terrain.
The thread could contain anecdotes about so many things. You can start with 'Anna Dhaana Sivan's special method of collecting and preserving 'thayir' in bulk.

So what is Anna daana sivan's method of preserving Thayir in bulk?
When do we start the JEEP THREAD?

It would be interesting to note here that word RETTU for Jelebi maavu pouring cloth rings a bell.
In Gujarati, RED means pour.
Can there be any connexion between retu, rettu or red ?
I will try and find out more!!

Hemant, I dont think so. Now that JB mentions it, I remember the cloth hammock used in "easy chairs" very common in TN is also called "ret". Those easy chairs! The modern ones two rectangular tubular frames usually use plastic or nylon mesh cloth, not called "rettu". The old wooden frame ones used this "rettu" that had flaps of cloth folded back and stitched creating pockets spanning the entire width on both ends. One inserts these ends into a narrow slots and then insert round pins into the rettu to hold it in place.
Elders tell me that I removed these pins, but left the ret in place and asked/demanded my grandma to feed me sitting in the easy chair. The ret slipped out its slot and she fell through. She had bowls of rasam saadham and thayir saadam on each hand at that time, tipped them all over her made a huge mess and was angry for weeks afterwards, not because of my mischief (ofcourse not I was the apple of her eye) but because my appa laughed at the sight! I, of course, dont have any recollection of it.
Google search "ret linen" turned up some info.
Retting is the process by which one soaks wood or canes and then they are beaten with hammers to extract linen fibers. Like in the Tamil proverb "kuttaiyil uuriya mattaikaL"? ret comes from the word rot.

Hello Ravi,!! You are right as far as olden cane furniture was known as Ret.In Madras, there is an old market area near China Bazaar known as Rattan Bazaar.
In actuality, this area had Rettan Furniture shops and they were selling cane furniture. That is why the area was known as Rettan Bazaar.
In olden days, we used to have cane easy chairs. They were known as Rettan chairs. But later on the place of cane or rettan was taken by cloth and stick contraption and it was still known as Ret or Rettan chairs. The cloth that was used was thick canvas which came to be known as Ret or Rettu cloth.

Make 2 or more dosas. Keep them one above the other. This will make a set. Likewise, make many sets of dosas. This is called 'Set Dosai'.
