Hi Usha,
This year, my son has turned out 4 years old and last year, i did travel with him to Madras.
Here, in US, u can get that small pack juice and flavoured and plain milk (since it is pasteurized, dont have to heat) or flavoured and plain yogurt available in pathmark. That will definitely do for them in the morning, if u r not satisfied with the flight food. But, u can try that bread with cheese and jam or juice to him. One important thing is whenever they provide food, even though ur son is sleeping, dont refuse. I did that mistake and after a couple of hours, when I asked them, they simply said that there was no food, that too in British Airlines. Hope you must be taking some cereal or snacks with u. Apart from that, tiffins like idly or chappathi is advisable with ghee and sugar. Have curd rice with u. This is more than enough for the travel journey.
When we reach Madras, it will be morning for them, but it is evening for us. So, u can ask ur folks to bring some tiffin for the kid because it will take time for u to get out of the airport and reach home. That is what I did. I asked them to bring idlies and fresh hot milk.
Once u go to Madras, u cant carry milk or curd from here. The best is u can take as much as soup u want(powder). U can use the milk and curd from there. Make sure about the water-use acqua guard, if not, boil the water very well, and then filter it, give it to him. My doc suggested me to avoid outside foods like in hotels. Of course it is a better idea. Once in a while, it is ok. Take sufficient cereal with u and give him every morning.
I think these things are more than enough for u. Homemade food, whatever it is, that wont do any harm, 100 % sure. When comes to hotel or any outside, u have to be careful with the quality.
good luck and have a nice trip.

Usha,
The tone of your posting the thread looks like there are no three-year-olds living in Madras. This is a psychological problem of all Indians living in foreign countries. I personally know a lady born and brought up in village in Kerala upto the age of 20 and then got married to a US settled guy. In her first trip back to India after two years she was found carrying food and mineral water of heavy quantities!! Seems she is afraid of eating and drinking in India!!!
Shame on you people!
What is so special of American-born Indian kids? Will they die if they eat and drink in Chennai? There are vert high quality restaurants in Chennai though it is best to cook at home.

I live abroad and I have a 3 yr old son. I went to India when he was very young. I didn't bother to be too careful but I had to pay for it. He lost weight and fell sick too often. Our holiday became a time for frequent visits to the doctor.
It is not that we are special, but since the pollution level in U.S and most of the west world is very very low, our kids are not immune to many things. For example when we were kids we played in the sand and mud, dirty rain water and our bodies got used to it. Here you hardly let your kids out to play. They are always playing in a supervised situation. So their body is not used to certain things. Therefore when they come to India, they cannot take it all, like we did. You do have to agree our water in India is not always clean. I have drunk some really dirty water in hostels and hotels, believe me. But our kids cannot take that. They get diarrhea. That is the only reason we are careful with certain things. But as long as the water is clean and they don't end up drinking and eating in unclean places, they will be fine and we can actually have a holiday. So don't be mad at our kids. They are only as special to us, as your kids are to you.
