Could you tell me how to use a plantain flower that you get from the indian store. I wanted to make thoran with this. But i have never used it before. We should first remove the exterior covering then take the thin white strings. Do we have to remove anything else. do we make thoren from these white string like flowers. thanks for your help. Plantain flower is good for your health as it has a lot of fibre hence i wanted to make it.

First remove 2-3 layers of outer covering. cut it into very small pieces ( like minced ), rub some oil, otherwise it will turn dark. mix it with grated coconut, thinly sliced shallots, sliced green chillis, salt, curry leaves and turmeric. cook it in small fire, without adding water. heat up some oil in a heavy bottomed pan, put some raw rice ( 1/2tsp), when it pops up put the cooked mixtute, stir in between so as to make it a dry thoran. Enjoy!

hi anu,
to prepare the plantain flower for cooking do the following:
-rub your hands with little oil to prevent stickiness and staining.
-remove the outer pink-red skin-u will see white colored flowers with red stamen inside.
-remove the red stamens
-continue peeling the outer skin and at each layer u will find flowers.repeat the process as above.
-after all the flowers are cleaned, chop and use for paruppu usili or other curries.
