I've got a lot of them from the garden- I didnt plant them the gardener did. I added them with a cauliflower dish (normal just fried onion,ginger-garlic,corriender,haldi & salt& little water & cooked). But the entire dish tasted bitter. I suspect it was the turnips which I used instead of potatoes. Can anybody help?? I dont want to throw them away so pleeeeeeeease help.

Hello Jenin,
First of all do not use larger turnips.Select tender ones and first taste them raw, turnips and some radishes are sometimes bitter.
If they are ok, then you can make sambar(just like Radish), Kootu or poriyal.I have used turnips in all these dishes.
Try using them in your salads too.

Several ways to cook turnips. IF the greens are bitter, bring them to a boil and cook for about 3 minutes. Drain and bring them to a boil again in fresh water. Repeat as needed until greens are not bitter tasting. Down South people also used to add a couple of teaspoons of sugar to the greens when cooking them down. For the roots, I usually let them cook with the greens. When the roots are tender, the greens are also ready. To cook the roots by themselves, cut into bite sized pieces and boil with a little salt until tender. Drain and serve whole. You can also cook the roots this way and then add a little butter or margarine and mash and serve them as you would simular to mashed potatoes.

1. Slice the turnips in round shapes or thin, long and broad slices. Dip them in cornflour batter and fry them till golden brown.
2. Turnips can be used in kurmas and other curries.
3. Use them while making cutlets.
4. If the turnips are not bitter, grate them after removing the outer skin. Heat a pan, pour one or two table spoons of ghee, add the grated turnip, a cup of milk and keep it on low fire for a few minutes until the raw smell is gone and is well cooked. Add sugar and keep stirring it till the sugar is dissolved completely and a thick syrup is formed. After a few minutes, when the grated turnip and sugar blend together well, add a few teaspoonfuls of ghee, stir, and remove from fire. Garnish with cashewnuts and raisins.
