I use microwave idli plates. They are very good. I got from Spencer Plaza (Chennai). There are two idli plates with a bowl where you have to pour some water - you can make 8 idlis in 3 minutes.

Idli batter should not be watery. Something like Rava Idli batter (I use MTR Mix for Rava idli and go for the yogurt quantity as specified - when you compare that with normal Idli batter, it will be thick). Just you have to keep this idli mix in the microwave (HIGH) for 3 minutes (not more than that) - let it rest in the microwave for a minute or two - then take out. I always get very soft idlis. Hope this helps.
Viji, Keep in high for 3 minutes. I guess that's what you are asking.

Dear KH
Yes you are absolutely right.Lot of our friends are addicted to our idlis.I also use the ordinary pan with lid method that you explained above except tiny holes kuzhi with cloth meathod .
last time when i went to india i want to bring that traditional whole idli paathram but i don't have a room for them in my suitcase (You know what i mean:) :).
so i took only one plate without the paathram..Mine has 5 kuzhis.so i'll make 2 batches in 10 to 15 minutes. The size of the idlis are half times bigger than normal cooker-idliplate idlis. so its more than enough for us.

Dear KH
If you don't mind i wan't to give you a little tip .When you make idlis in ordinary pan put used lemon or lime peels in the water bcoz due to shortage of pots and pans we use that same pan to make curryes and non-veg items (I do).so how many times we wash them well the curry smell do appear espeasaly when we boil water in them.
In india other than lemon peels mom also use curry leaves and cilantro leaves both togeather to improve the aroma of the idlis. But here curry leaves are valuable like gold :):):) i stick with lemon peels.

If u r in NJ, then, check in farmers market for curry leaves. Though a plate is 2 bucks something, the qty. is huge. Will come for atleast 2 weeks or so.

Hello Raathi,
That's a good idea, i'll do it! Actually i tried only rava idlis in the pan, as the indregients of them included curry leaves and cilantro, there was no problem. Even in my place, i get the cuury leaves only in Indian srores and a small ziplock bag cost around 2 bucks. That's too much for it, but as there's need, we go for it. Anyway thanks yaar!
