I THINK THERE IS A TYPO ERROR IT IS MASALA OR GARAM MASALA.
MASALA IS A POWDER FORM OF INDIVIDUAL SPICES LIKE, CUMIN SEEDS, CORIANDER SEEDS ETC.
GARAM MASALA IS A MIXTURE OF SPICES IN A CERTAIN PROPORTION SUCH AS CLOVES, PEPPER, BAYLEAF, CORIANDER ETC. THE RESULTING POWDER IS CALLED GARAM(HOT) MASALA(POWDERED SPICE).
THERE R WIDE RANGE OF THESE MASALAS AVAILABLE IN ANY INDIAN STORE.
DIFERENT SPICES OR THEIR POWDERS R USED IN A VARIETY OF WAYS IN INDIAN COOKING . U CAN LOOK UPTO ANY INDIAN FOOD WEBSITE TO GET IN DETAIL USE OF THESE.

I keep seeing garam marsala in my recipe books, however I sure can't find it in a store. Where can you buy it?

My correct name is Garam Masala, not Marsala. (Note the absence of r in Masala)

Hello Mike,
Can you please let me know as to which part of this small world are you ?
If in US, then where ?
Try any Indian Grocery store.
Or you can buy on line from Indian /pakistani stores in your vicinity.
If you have any more problems about Indian cookery or like, please feel free to ask.

I guess the recipe book writer would have purposefully put an 'r' between 'mas' and 'ala' to make the westerners pronounce the word correctly. otherwise they would stress on the 'm' and 'l' and pronounce it as "mah-saale".

No Marsala is different from masala.
Please consult someone. I think Marsala is some kind of cajun vinegar.

I hate to disappoint the know-it-alls, but in a lot of cookbooks, it is spelt 'marsala'. Marsala is also a type of wine.

I'm a fan of barbeque, and just found some garam masala in my spice supply. It sounds like it might make a good rub for beef or pork. Anyone have any experience with its use in grilled meats?

yes of course you can use it in barbeque. If you would like, you could add some other stuff like ginger garlic paste and chilli powder too.

pepper,
I thought you are here to learn!! I think the first think you should learn is that it is masala and NOT marsala. If some book spells it as marsala, it does not make it right my friend.

garam masala is a mixture of spices. A masala is usually a spicy gravy, though it can describe the garam masala (dry mixx) a wet masala (usually incorporating fresh garlic and/or ginger and/or fresh coriander leaf). A good garam masala should only contain strong aromatics, such as cloves, cardamom, cassia and mace/nutmeg, and maybe black pepper. Every region is said to have its own recipe, as is every home, but most will contain those spices mentioned above. Shop bought garam masala is adulterated with cheap spices, like coriander, cumin, chili fenugreek and turmeric, and really is not to be trusted. Make your own, grind the spices together, and keep in a glass jar with a very tight fitting lid.

both are incorrect spellings, there is no r in masala, as in chicken tikka masala or garam masala. I have over a hundred Indian recipe books, and none of them spells either with an r. Marsala is a wine.
