The English language is Britain's greatest gift to India- A good joke

It was written in an Indian embassy in UK.
It was very amazing to see this. These statements
make the people think that before British,
Indians never spoke and British people taught
Indians a great language called English.
Dont you think it as a joke. I was laughing
in that Embassy unknowingly, and everybody
was staring at me.
One more thing,
'English is the most illogical language spoken
in the contemporary world'. For example
'Leicester' is spoken as 'Lester'. We can
say millions of such examples. I am not saying this. An Englishman, my friend told this.

"The English language is Britain's greatest gift to India"
If the british government thinks that is the best gift they gave to India, so be it. What's the big deal? If you don't like English, consider that as equivalent of someone who gave "Rs. 5" gift at your marriage but ate food worth Rs. 10 :-)
Like it or not, British were the largest colonial power to occupy Indian territory, and English language became popular because of that. But to think of the language itself as a gift, hmmm.. more like leftovers (no offense there). But to some extent, this helped as a link language between states that did not share a common language.
But, I don't understand why you got the feeling that they think "Indians never spoke and British people taught Indians a great language called English" unless such intention was stated explicitly in the material you read.

This means that they did not give India anything better than their language. What is wrong in acknowledging this? Why should we think that they have given us "greater gifts", if they themselves do not think so?

Observer,
'If you don't like English, consider that as equivalent of someone who gave "Rs. 5" gift at your marriage but ate food worth Rs. 10'
I cannot say that I dont like English very loudly,
since I am living in UK. It is not 5:10 as you told. What our country lost to them is invaluable. You can see the samples in every
UK museums.
A joke to one person may be something serious
to others. For me, the gift they gave was a
sh*t. It is a symbol of slavery. But unfortunately
we are poor people. It is the cheapest food available.

The greatest gift the british gave India was that they had united us. even though they messed up majorly with the partition of pakistan, I think they pulledthe north and the south together... and people started thinking as one.

Pabum,
US wants to rule India, Pakistan, Bangladesh,
Srilanka and China for another 400 years and
on 2447 it will give a new country together.
Will your great grand sons accept it as a gift?

The only gift the British gave India was modern industry which increased India's trade with other parts of the world, but this also caused downfall. The British did not do anything significant which positively impacted India. Just downfall.

The only gift that the British gave India was - INDIA. Without that gift 'India' would have been just fragmented pieces and small parcels of land ruled by mini Rajas, ethinically and liguistically segregated and seperated - and frequently locking horns with each other.
Anyway, it is not much different now!

british were nothing but pirates.they looted gold, silk and india's total wealth.I still wonder why the mountbaten gang was given a send off by nehru ? they should have arrested all the british in india and put them in jail till we recovered all dues from england.
I have read somewhere that the british owe Rs 3.5 crore to every indian, pakistani and bangladesh citizen.this was counted by Dadabhai nauroji in 1910.
The wealth of europe and america is not their own.it has come from the blood of asians, africans and red indians.

The English gave India many gifts:
Partition, making of the world's first Islamic State Pakistan. Famine through out their rule in India. And the greatest robbing of nations wealth in history. 4 trillion in gold alone was stolen from India between 1800-1947. India owes the British nothing. If it was not for these barbarians India would be a united world power today.

Yes...
No India before British. Idiyappam is right with Indian history.
I think some idiots from the north confused with HINDU with India.
Hundreds of HINDU rulers and Muslim rulers were in power before British and owned pieces of lands in the sub-continent.
