where the pupil stayed in the masters house, did house chores, and in turn got educated. But in trying to insert Gurukul system in the
time-line, I couldn't find any reference at all about when this system was prevalent. "

  Gurukuls defenitely existed during the puranic and upanishadic times in INdia. Several references to it are there. For example Rama went to the Gurukul maintained by Vasishta and Krishna that maintained by Sandeepini. Simlarly all upanishads are Gurukul based.

  Gurukul word made with two words GURU - KUL. Guru means who can play the role of friend, Philosopher and Guide. KUL means who can carry on the new generation. We should not carry and remember the names of our biological parents only but with that we have to make our identity to the world from whom and where we got our intelecchual, mental and religios understanding and strenghen.
  Guru, who brighten up the five rooms of our life those are: social, economical, mental, political and religious. Like the same way we can explain mud made by GOD but water jug made by potter same way our phisical body maker are our biologikal parents, like GOD but our life makers are our GURU who give us particular turn, shape to our life potter.
