Approach to History

In my schooldays, I used to hate history; I couldnt see the point in knowing whether Akbar was the son of Babar or vice versa;. I couldnt figure out how the fact that the third Panipat war was fought in 1761 is significant to me. Later, I developed an interest in the Freedom movement and wanted to understand what motivated the average Indian to stand behind Gandhi.

I hv two questions;
1. Why is history, especially in textbooks, a chronology of Royalty ?

2. Why do we never find an unbiased approach to our leaders ? Gandhi, Nehru, Patel, Subash, Akbar, Shivaji, Karikala are all glorified like hell. I am sure in another 50 years, Kalaignar, Anna, MGR, JJ etc. will be equally glorified ? Why do the historians give such an one sided picture of our national leaders ?
