recently i chanced upon an online comment that the priests of certain ancient northern indian temples such as badrinath, kedarnath are from south india, e.g. badrinath has priests from the nambudiri brahmins of kerala whereas the priests of kedarnath are from the lingayat community, considered the foremost worshippers of lord shiva. pashupatinath in nepal has brahmins from karnataka as a tradition. rangamandir, mathura has shri vaishnava (iyengar) priests from south india.

it was mentioned that adi shankaracharya formulated this tradition in the interests of national integration. all north-indian temples of that time were staffed by south-indian priests and vice versa.

with respect to north-indian priests in south indian temples, we have the example of ramanathaswamy temple of rameswaram which has priests from maharashtra.

i would be curious to have other examples from other contributors, esp abt southern indian temples and northern brahmins.
