In Ernakulam Lok Sabha by-election Cong.(Antony) candidate MO John was defeated by LDF independent candidate Dr. Sebastian Paul. Other candidates were Hindu BJP independent V viswanatha Menon and Muslim PDP candidate Poonthura Siraj. In the constituency voters are 34% Hindus, 21% Muslims and 45% Christians. The main election issues were (a) communal killings at Marad in Kozhikode Dt and Thaikkal in Alapuzha Dt in which 19 human beings (10 Hindus, 4 Muslims and 5 Christians were murdered) (b) the state congress leadership tussle between K Karunakaran and AK Antony. Anyway Muslims voted in bloc to Left Democratic Front to protest against Antony who is leaning to RSS Hindutva for the last ten years and Muslim League leader Kunjalikkutty who is blindly supporting Antony.
