1937- Gandhi was nominated for Nobel but was not selected.
1947- Gandhi was nominated but was rejected;
1948- a flood of nominations was rejected. Prize was not awarded to anyone, as "no suitable candidate was available.

At that time itself, the purpose behind the award of Nobel prize for peace came to be examined critically. But never in the history of nobel prize has the ulterior motive of that committee been so exposed as in 2001 when the Nobel prize was awarded to Naipaul.

Who went gaga?

The most communal community of India went gaga over the award of Nobel price to Mr. V.S. Naipaul.

But what was there to gloat about, after all? This time politically things had moved in favour of Naipaul. That is all. The Nobel laureate himself has gone on record saying that his name had been contemplated for this award nearly 30 years ago. But, at that time politically things had gone against him.

When pointedly asked whether politics played a role in his being awarded the prize in 2001, he became aware of the fact that he had been caught in the wrong foot over his confession of his knowledge of the politics behind the award, Naipaul simply pleaded that he was ignorant.

Now the text from the

Asian Age of 11.11.2001.

During his stay in Washington to promote his new novel Half a Life and to be a guest on Diane Rehm's public radio show, "At one point, Naipaul says that nearly 30 years ago he received word through the grapewine that he was going to win the Nobel prize. It did not happen. 'Politically, things had moved against me". "At another point, Rehm asks if politics perhaps played a role in his being awarded the prize in 2001. He says he does not know".
