Sanskrit had been an unifying force in our country for a long period in it's history.Infact there is no indian state that has not contributed to enrich the language. To cite examples,we have kalhana, bilhana, rudrata, mankha from kashmir, dandi, appaya dikshita, venkataadhwarifrom tamil nadu, magha from gujarat, abhinanda ,shri harsha ,jayadeva, govardhana from bengal, kalidasa from madhya pradesh and even a poet from shrilanka-kumaradasa.Has any other indian language spread beyond it's geographical boundaries to such an extent[save tamil to some extent].Is there a maharashtrian who has written in malayalam?or a tamilian who has written in kashmiri?English is widely spoken,no doubt ,but can it become a language of indian culture? While sanskrit's mahabharata and ramayana have penetrated in to indian folk-lore,which english work can claim this credit? If one were to argue that the varna system was responsible for sanskrit's popularity,he is mistaken, for ,many sanskrit poets were buddhists and jains such as ashwa ghosha, somadeva, vaadeebhasimha who never believed in varna-vyavastha?so,sanskrit really has something special about it that made it acceptable to so many people irrespective of their geography and caste.Hindi is comparitively a newer language that is unacceptable to many south indians.BUT,sanskit should be no problem, since south indian languages have heavily borrowed from it's vocabulary and literature-for example-kamban's tamil raamayanam ,nannaiah,s telugu bhaghavatham, pampa's vikrama-arjunavijayam in kannada.DOESN'T SANSKRIT DESERVE TO BE INDIA'S NATIONAL LANGUAGE.
