A great Movement in Kerala

A great movement is spreading in Kerala. Kerela farmers have organised themselves to prevent the use of palmoil which is the main cause for the abysmal fall in the prices of coconut and coconut oil. A coconut now fetches 2 Rs or little more than that. Free import of agricultural goods have broken the backbone of Kerala’s agrarian economy. Now, the farmers’ movement discourage consumption of softdrinks marketed by multinationals and promote tender coconuts. I think this is the beginning of a great movement to take on the forces of globalisation and freemarket economy where the interests of the weak and hapless are not protected. What are these fellows trying to do on a 'Toddy' thread. If you all wan't to invite applications for your Medical College, you should find other means.
Now,Tamilian ,I fully agree to your suggestions.Traditions do not make life easy.If malayalees can leave thenga and do some thing better,we will be better off.It is not proper to destry soft drinks and promote vandalism against soft drink co. for they too are out there to make a living.

No question that the industrial and agricultural backwardness of kerala state is because of our willingness to change our phylosophies. You would laugh if you here the reasons given against Express Highway.
But then the problem with the Soft drinks (Pepsi and Cola) had some genuine cause behind it. They where drawing underground water in quantities that was causing a change in water level. A person living in a city like bangalore will easily know the effect of lowering water level.
Another thing the soft drinks company did was to sell industrial wastes calling it agricultural manure without doing necessary testing. There was some poisonous content which was harmful to plants.
Vut we keralites have grown to fight anything progressive that it has become difficult to distinguish between right and wrong

Agreed Sandeep,Keralites who live in Kerala are not used to work and only used to strike. This very month there were atleast 4 days of strike I believe .they are fighting a non existant enemy.Malayalies will progress only if we understand we are our own enemies.

Indeed it is time for soulsearching. Once Strikes, Satyagraha and hartals were the only weapons of the oppressed and the exploited class which wwere used by them when all options were closed as in freedom struggle. Now even those weapons are hijacked by the exploiters. See one hartal this week was to protest against the arrest of a suspected murderer (or the way he was treated by the police). And another one to protest against Petrol price hike.

But by whom-Transport operators. I cant understand the logic of their suffering. Are they not going to increase the charges on every increase of petrol prices. If that is the case it is a noble cause , I agree. But here the real sufferers are the Common man Who are affected by both the strike as well as the Price hike. If we dont make a distinction betweeen these two, ultimateley we end up playing in the hands of those exploiters. but the tendency to label all Keralites living in Kerala as enemy is not correct. Kerala is still a place were lot of good qualities are nurtured, and possibly produce lot of hard working enterprenuers like Mr BlahBlah in the future also.

Hari,I just said that in an enraged mood and didn't mean to be so heavy on the Keralites living in Kerala. But of all these politicians who are against Private colleges and English education,Show us a few guys whose children are not studying in convent schools or in Private colleges in other states. The problem is that those who speak for Kerala today do not believe on their own words.

I agree to you that maby people show double standards in these issues.
Also it is not difficult to understand the compulsions which leads to this situation. Ideally, in a welfare society, equal opportunities should be availlable to all. The private colleges goes basically against these ideals. Likewise it is a fact that English medium education alleniates our children from the Cultural backgroud of Kerala. Due to the job opportunities and due to the need to integrate with outside world it becomes necessary to go for English medium even in Kerala.

May be the poor standard of malayalam medium Schools also is a reason for many to opt for English. Bu it is compulsions. It is like this.I go for Train reservation through back door paying something extra. But that doesnt mean I like this situation.(Necessary evils). . 'Natotumbol Natuve Otanam'. It is my limitationSo my reqest is, just because they talk double standards we should not look down at their arguments. We may better judge it on the merit of the argument

I firmly believe education does not alienate anyone from their trditional culture.I myself have received English education and that is what made myself understand and integrate into other cultures which I have worked with.It also makes one capable of meeting the challenges of this world.I am living outside Kerala for the last 14 yrs and we still live the way we used to live in Kerala. We speak and write fluent malayalam and we will certainly teach it to our children. We eat more 'Nadan' foods than probably you people do.It is the country chiks in Cochin who
speak'Malyalam'.
