I came across this translation of the national anthem:
Thou art the ruler of the minds of all people, dispenser of India's destiny. The name rouses the hearts of Punjab, Sind, Gujarat and Maratha,of the Dravid and Orissa and Bengal; it echoes in the hills of the Vindhyas and Himalayas, mingles in the music of the Yamuna and Ganga and is chanted by the waves of the Indian Sea. They pray for thy blessings and sing thy praise. The salvation of all people is in thy hand, thou dispenser of India's destiny. Victory, victory, victory to thee.
Is this translation apt?
Its strange that I should think of this now after so many years of singing the national anthem, but, can anyone enlighten me and many like me who do not know who this esoteric saviour of India was intended to be? Since Tagore's patriotism is unrefutable who did he have in mind when he wrote this poem in 1911.

You ask :
"who this esoteric saviour of India was intended to be?"
It was King George V (or VI ... does it matter)?
Tagore wrote the poem to praise the noble qualities of King George V when he landed in Bombay in 1905.

The song Jana-gana-mana, composed originally in Bengali by Rabindranath Tagore, was adopted in its Hindi version by the Constituent Assembly as the national anthem of India on 24 January 1950. It was first sung on 27 December 1911 at the Calcutta Session of the Indian National Congress. The complete song consists of five stanzas. The first stanza contains the full version of the National Anthem :
Jana-gana-mana-adhinayaka, jaya he
Bharata-bhagya-vidhata.
Punjab-Sindh-Gujarat-Maratha
Dravida-Utkala-Banga
Vindhya-Himachala-Yamuna-Ganga
Uchchala-Jaladhi-taranga.
Tava shubha name jage,
Tava shubha asisa mage,
Gahe tava jaya gatha,
Jana-gana-mangala-dayaka jaya he
Bharata-bhagya-vidhata.
Jaya he, jaya he, jaya he,
Jaya jaya jaya, jaya he!
Playing time of the full version of the national anthem is approximately 52 seconds. A short version consisting of first and last lines of the stanza (playing time approximately 20 seconds) is also played on certain occasions.

The following is Tagore’s English rendering of the anthem :
Thou art the ruler of the minds of all people,
dispenser of India’s destiny.
Thy name rouses the hearts of Punjab, Sind,
Gujarat and Maratha,
Of the Dravida and Orissa and Bengal;
It echoes in the hills of the Vindyas and Himalayas,
mingles in the music of Jamuna and Ganges and is
chanted by the waves of the Indian Sea.
They pray for thy blessings and sing thy praise.
The saving of all people waits in thy hand,
thou dispenser of India’s destiny.
Victory, victory, victory to thee.

Vande Mataram is much nicer.
Vande Mataram
India's Official National Song
History of Vande Mataram and Janagana Mana
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Excerpted From "Story of a Song" by Mr Shivaramu.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Composed by Bankim Chandra, this song appears in the Bengali novel Anand Math. The English translation of Vande Mataram rendered by Shree Aurobindo, is considered to be the "official" and best. According to Bhavan's book, Vande Mataram by Moni Bagchee (pg. 66),
"Bankin Chandra composed the song in an inspired moment, Rabindranath sang it by setting a tune to it and it was left to the genius of Aurobindo to interpret the deeper meaning of the song out of which India received the philosophy of new Nationalism."

"Vande Mataram" was the national cry for freedom from British oppression during the freedom movement. Large rallies, fermenting initially in West Bengal, in the major metropolis of Calcutta would work themselves up into a patriotic fever by shouting the slogan "Vande Mataram,". The British, fearful of the potential danger of an incited Indian populace, at one point banned the utterance of the motto in public forums and jailed many freedom fighters for disobeying the proscription.
"Vande Mataram" was a major aspirant for being the national anthem of India but eventually Jana Gana Mana, ultimately chosen. The choice was slightly controversial, since the Vande Mataram was the one song that truly depicted the pre-independence national fervour. The song was rejected on the grounds that Muslims felt offended by its depiction of the nation as "Ma Durga"—a Hindu goddess.
Moreover the novel Anandamatha which originally had "Vande Mataram" as part of it had an anti-Muslim message.

According to the site www.freeindia.org, Congress workers had requested Rabindranath Tagore to compose a song in praise of the arriving King George V. After repeated attempts, he was unable to do so. One morning he composed a poem addressing to God rather than the King.He said to his disciples, that he would give this poem to the congress workers. Nobody outside Tagore's circle knew about this fact.
Everybody thought and some still think this was a song composed in George V 's praise.
Inspite of everything it was inappropriate on the parts of our politicians to accept this song as our national anthem.
Clearly, Vande Mataram was song that must have been chosen. This Bankim Chandra composition was widely used against the British during the freedom struggle and truely reflected the Indian spirit and continues to do so.
