I read an interview of Arundhati Roy and she talks about how in Kerala there is something refered to as tharawaad meaning a type of lineage. What exactly is it?

Can't you just write a little about them here? Is there some mystery to it? Would love to know more as I'm among them now.

The group Moonnillath is found close to the Annapoornewari Temple, Cherukunnu. Formerly these two groups were close blood lineancy and avoided marrying each other, so they married the Nairs or Shudras. Palamruthan the group who lives close to the Taliparamba temple and who are the only group who serves Krishna Temple with the milk are also Yadavas, even though they are known Nairs like the Maniyani’s or Kolayans of Malabar they are also Ezhillathu.
Yadavas of Maniyani’s were the only group who were allowed to worship the Goddess Durga in their own home or Kottilakam. The home deity Kolaswaroopathingal Thaya (Thai Paradevata) which is the same as Madaikkavil Achi and Chirakkal Kalrivathukkal Temple.Annapoorneswari is worshipped as a different form of Durga. Yadavas are worshippers of the Goddess. The Niduvadan veedu of Irinavu the home diety Dharma daivam and the Parudevatha ( Devi /Thaya) are worshipped in the kottilakam instead of a kavu.

Thanks Madai Veeran. So are the ezhillathu nairs of Chirakkal really nairs? I was given to understand that they were in the close service of the Chirakkal Kokilakam and were kshatriya nairs, similar to the kiriyath nair in standing. Any idea? In narath ( part of greater chirakkal?), some of these families conduct annual neyyamrithu for the Narathappan (Vishnu) temple as a hereditary custom.

'Tharavadu' was the residential unit of the nair nobility in Kerala. 'thara' meant the small principality under each nair noble, there were almost 600 tharas in Kerala in the ancient times, when Malabar, then name of Kerala, was the richest province in the world. South India in general was at the apex of civilization. After the Brahmins coming this changed and the local nobility was cleverly manipulated to "sudrahood" made labour caste. 'Tharavadu' still exists as the generic name of each aristocratic lineage. Some Syrian Christians, originally refugees to Kerala from Syria, made powerful during the British rule, also now use the term, they also 'mis'use Nair names now. u can visit www.nairs.org to know about the nairs in general ...

Radha, I read up the portion abt the Malabari provinces of Kerala in nair.org. I was intrigued by the mention of Valluvanad? Could anyone please elaborate on this subject? Has it anything to do with the Velluva Tharawad?

nirosha, valluvanad was among the many 'nadus' like eranad, venad, kuttanad, nanchinadu, kongunad etc. latter two now in tamil'nadu' that is our composite tamil past. though after brahminisation malayalis claim to be superior, some call tamilians 'pandis'. how the dravidian movement failed. now about the velluva tharavadu, if there is one, it may have roots in the old valluva kings. most of the old nair kingdoms were neutralised by the brahminised and later muslim and christian (british)rulers. so it is worth probing. remember, history sometimes repeat ...

Historically, the prosperity of Valluvanad under Valluvakonathiri, should be written in golden letters in the history of Kerala
Samoothiri annexed Palghat & surrounding areas & subjugated the Nedungadi kings. In response, Vallukanari erected the "Mannarmala Fort" & crowned the 4th senior member of Manjeri Kovilakom as the king of Mannarmala to stop Samoothiri from crossing the Attapadi Mala (Silent Valley) & enter Valluvanad. The new king is entitled to Malikhan & the title "Onnu kure ayirathil Thampuran" (one in a thousand).

After losing Panthalur areas, Vallukanari had to accept Melattur river as its northern border. In order to stop the enemy crossing the river, Vallukanari appointed a young member of the family as Patinharakkara Thampuran.
In the south to protect the coasts of Bharata Puzha the 5th sthani (Kolathur Thampuran) & senior-most Thampuratty (Kolathur Thampuratty) were made rulers of the area. To protect them, a strong army was created under the command of Kulathur Varier.
It is also said that a Brahmin, Puzhakkattiri Moos, was Vallukanari's chief commander. He had a number of Kalaris under him for training the warriors. Even now, near his Illam, there is a place called Pataparambu (field for pata i.e. training field).

Now some Legends:
Samoothiri was never able to defeat the army of Vallukanari, even though Vallukanari had fewer soldiers. A surprised Samoothiri asked Sree Villwamangalam Swamiar the reason for this. The Swamiar asked Samoothiri to touch him by 1 finger, close one eye & then look at the battlefield. When Samoothiri did so, he saw "Bhadrakali" ie Thirumandhamkunnilamma attired in red garb with sword & shield, standing by the side of Vallukanari & directing the battle.
Later, Samoothiri, did tapas for 41days at Thirumandhamkunnu (Perinthalmanna, Mlpm dist)& this pleased the Goddess. When Bhagavathi asked what he wanted as varam, he said he wanted Sakthi to conquer Valluvanad. The goddess said the whole of Valluvanad belonged to her & it was to be ruled by her devotees ie Vallukanaris. However, she promised half her strength to Samoothiri.
Because of this help, Samoothiri built the "Thiruvalayanad Temple" in the model of Thirumandhamkunnu Temple & installed Bhadrakali there.
