lord mayo was assassinated by a pathan named shiv
ali in andaman in 1868. he was the first ever viceroy to be assassinated.can u give me the reason why he was assassinated???

  He was not "the first ever viceroy to be assassinated", unless you specifically mean "first of India" or "first during service". Look up Abbas I, Viceroy of Egypt, assassinated in 1854, and also Hugh de Lacy, Viceroy of Ireland, assassinated in 1186, AFTER his tenure, as with Lord Mountbatten.

  isnt the fact that he was an english landed lord ruling india a perfectly good reason to assasinate him? likewise Abbas in Egypt, De lacey in ireland, and even Mountbatten who ought to have known better.

  It is NOT a "perfectly good reason" to assassinate someone because he was "an English landed lord ruling India." That does not necessarily make him a tyrant, a despot, a dictator or a homicidal maniac. Mayo was, to all intents and purposes, a decent, honourable human being who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and whose death (murder) was not "personal" but political. Unfortunately, the same reasoning that says political assassination is OK no doubt would excuse the World Trade Centre catastrophe on the grounds that it contained representatives of U.S. capitalism and financial interests. This may (technically) justify it (i.e. one cannot doubt that these things have their evil side, just as British imperialism did) but it does not excuse it, because as human beings all these people, including Mayo, were innocent. Mayo was not Hitler or even Saddam Hussein. The issue is, as often as not, human as well as ideological, because most people in high (and in the case of the Viceroy, largely ceremonial) positions are not genocidal maniacs. On the other hand, some so-called "elected" people in power, representing countries which call themselves democracies, are posing far more danger to humanity in general than all British viceroys who ever governed India, from Canning (1858) to Mountbatten (1947).

  his murder was a personal vendetta and nothign more. an intersting anecdote: on the day he was killed in the andamans the famous astrologer- astronomer of orissa, samantharaya declared in puri that "the king is dead!". he was arrested by the police for rumour mongering. but after a few days the news came that mayo was killed on the same day samantharaya announced that the king is dead. he was freed and honoured by the british. he was given the title, 'mahamahopatyaya'. but people ever since calle dhim 'pathani' samantharaya!
