I think this nonbu is performed by women to attaining a 'sadhaa sumangali' status, by keeping the husband alive for eternity - or at least till the sumangali dies. The goddess that is propitiated is Savithri, who rescued her husband, Sathyavaan, from the clutches of Yaman. The story goes like this. Sathyavaan's time is up, so Yama comes to take him away. Savithri pleads with Yaman to give her husband back to her. Yaman does not budge, saying that he has a duty to do, But Savithri is very persistent. Yaman finally relents and tells het that he is very impressed with her pathi-bhakthi, so she can ask for anything of him, other than her husband's life. Savithri asks Yaman to bless her with a 'sadhaa sumangali' status. Yaman unthinkingly says O.K. Savithri tells him that, to keep his word, he now has to return her husband to her. Yaman is forced to let go Satyavaan.

Just oru correction. Yama doesn't actually grant her 'sada sumangali' status directly, she asks for 100 children of her own..and thenwhen that wish is granted by Yama, she tells him that she cannot have 100 kids without her husband, and thus saves him.

Hi
First of all, its "kara-adai" nonbu
not karadayaar
Karadai nonbu, was initially performed by goddess parvathi, in order to please
Lord Shiva. She happen to take birth on earth, and was distressed by the her
seperation with Shiva. Hence she used to cook one adai, (rice adai) and offer
that adai with butter, and pray to shiva, that she should never part with him.
It is said she kept this vrath for 45 days or one mandalam.
Hence women do it to pray that they should never be separated from their better
halves, or loved ones, in any birth, till eternity.
THIS IS NOT A SUMANGALI POOJA.
It is said later Savithri was advised to keep this vrath (nonbu), for the
fulfillment of her will.
(As for as savithri story goes, I guess, sugrutha's messege, with Preethi's ending
is the right version of the story)
The purpose of this pooja is not to pray that ladies should die as sumangali.
It is to pray that neither the man nor the woman, who happen to love each other,
should be saddned by seperation.

An aunt of mine used to pray that she live to take care of her sick husband till his end. And she did. A true sumangali IMO, though not in the traditional sense.

i don't know what to say but the whole thing 'bout fasting and praying for the husband's wellbeing looks so dumb considering that the husbands do not exert themselves that way to pray for the wife's wellbeing!

I am a non-Hindu with a question: How would a woman do puja for her husband and his family daily... what are the steps she would take, the prayers she would say etc.

hi friends,
I would like to add that , during Savithri Nombu(i prefer to call it like this !!...no kaara adai or kaaradaiyaar)....there is one famous line that women say before tieing the nombu thread around their neck!.." urugaandha vennayum oar adai yum Naan nuuttheen....yen kanavan yenai vittu piriyaamal iruka vaendum".

Any woman who loves her husband would do it without fail....... I would. Not to bribe and get favours from god, but the event is an opportunity to show my husband that I care for him. Its like a Greeting card which says -"I love you"
