I wonder if we could discuss Sri Lankan folk songs here. One that comes to mind is Surangani which used to be quite popular some years ago. Does anyone have the words for this song? Do any other songs come to mind.

dE Ganesh,
Nobody is bashing any languages here. I have never heard the Sinhalese language before and I was trying to find its origin etc. I will ask just a few more questions, even though the dicussion is not about language.
What is this 'Elu' language Senaka mentioned? Is this why Srilanka is also called as 'Elam' ('Ezham')?

De SnEha Seneka!
Can you send the lyrics to 'Eda Rae' by Milton Mallawarachchi, and if possible the translation?

Hi Senaka,
Yes, I do understand most of the Sinhala songs. But some of your latest links are not working, never mind. I will write you later as I'm in the middle of something.
Thanks,
Ganesh.
P.S: "Kotthu rotti" is so funny song :o))
Thamil Nataan: Will write you later regarding "Elu" language. Mean while why don't you avoid calling "DE"?.

Sarida Ganesh, I will avoid calling "de". I started using it as it makes the first 2 letters of Decorum :-)

TamilNattan, here are the lyrics of "Eda Rae" by Milton and an approximate translation in English:
eda rae...
guvan thotupoledi maa
venvee giye...
sithakin nove
nesiya mithuran pemineela
aasiri subha pathum pathuwa...
oba naawe eyi mihiriye?
me vana thuru rahasak weelaa
maa sithe yam deyak thibuna...
eya keematai latha vune
that night...
at the airport I
separated (from you)
but not with my mind/thoughts
relations and friends came
and wished me good luck...
(but) why didn't you come my sweetheart?
all this time it was a secret
There was something in my mind
I was meaning to tell you
Basically its a sad song - the guy is about to leave the country and at the airport, all his friends and family turned up to wish him well but the person he really wanted to come (his sweetheart) didn't turn up. He was about to tell her something special before he left but it never happened.

Ganesh yes those songs are good. Karunaratne Divulgane released a new album but I don't think the songs are as good as his other ones. You can check the new songs here: http://sinhalajukebox.org/cgi-bin/songs.cgi?action=PlayPlayList&playlist=20030130120108

SnEha Senaka,
What can I say except that this is tearful and I am moved.. Translations never convey the emotion as it is, but I have to say you have done so well with just a few words.. and I can feel it.
I think I can get some words..
Rae = night (Sanskrit - Ratri, raa)
Maa = I, my
Sitha = mind
Nove = no
Naawe = Not you.
Subha pathum = good luck
Mihiri = My heart (Sanskrit - mama Hrutaya)
Rahashak = secret (Sanskrit - Rahasya)
I think something like 'vun', or 'wu' should mean 'you'.
Am I right?

on: Sat Feb 8 23:42:08
I forgot
Mithura = friends (Sanskrit - Mitra)
Nesiya = the ones who love you (Sanskrit = Nesa)

Dear Uncle Ganesh,
Dhodaa!!!!
I am happy to see that Uncle Ganesh has not abandoned racism. He is trying to educate Thamil-Natan-Thambi how to be a great racist by showing all the Sinhaladvipa and Eelamist websites. Uncle was not entirely objective as he provided 2 anti-Sinhala sites but only one anti-Tamil site. I am especially thrilled to see www.sangam.org one of the most prominent sources for Eelam terrorist propaganda.
Anyway I congratulate Uncle Ganesh for ruining the otherwise-friendly atmosphere of this thread by introducing SL politics. All the best Uncle.

TamilNattan, hey that is pretty impressive. You got most of them right!
Naawe = didn't come
Mihiri = sweet, beautiful
Oba = you (there are several ways to say "you" in Sinhalese. Some are: Oba, oya, umba, numba, thamuse, tha ....some of these are pretty rude when used - I won't mention which ones.)

I HEARD YOU SINGING THAT NIHAL NELSON'S BAILA VERY SOOTHING. I DID'NT HEAR YOU SINGING THE OTHER SONG YOU HAVE MENTIONED.I THINK IT IS A CLASSIC SONG.DO YOU STILL PLAY THE BASS GUITAR?
YOU HAD A TAMIL GUITARIST IN YOUR BAND I CAN'T REMEMBER HIS NAME.HE WAS VERY GOOD TOO.

love--------prem or pyar
song--------gaanaa
tell--------boloa

eat---------kaavo

either when I'm watching hindi films or singing with the indian groups I need to know the meaning of the words. Then only I can put my feelings into them (specially when I'm singing ).
It is a wonderful musical language.
If Mohammed Rafi was living today it would have been a different story in the indian cinema.
he still lives in many people's hearts.
