The current Sri Lankan government headed by Ranil Wickremesinghe and Tamil Tigers are preparing for the peace talks. According to a report appeared this morning, the TULF leader M. Sivasithamparm may settle for a federal state.

We, Eelam Tamils, have made enormous sacrifice in order to secure freedom. Even if the current Sri Lankan government grants a federal state, there is no guarantee that the next government would not abolish the federal system of government. No country in the world will ensure safety and security for Eelam Tamils. We need to defend ourselves.

Considering the animosity that exists between Sinhalese and Tamils, federal system will not work for Sri Lanka. Tamils do require a Tamil army to protect them from Sinhalese. However, both Sinhalese and Tamils do require a confederacy to protect them from aliens. Under a confederation, both Sri Lanka and Eelam could have their own security forces.

I would prefer an independent sovereign Eelam nation to any other alternative. However, no country would be prepared to recognize Eelam even if LTTE defeats the Sri Lankan military. The situation may change with changing geopolitics. At this moment, I would say a confederation would be the best compromise for both Sinhalese and Tamils.

Both Sri Lankan government and Tigers need to agree on a rotating presidential system for the confederation in order to secure a just solution for the ethnic conflict.

I request both Sinhalese and Tamils who are interested in finding a peaceful solution to voice their suggestions in this thread. Please do not turn this thread into a Sinhala Tamil hate thread.

Thanks,

Periyar Arivar
