REF :- ARTICLE BY TOI STAFFER MR.AMBARISH MISHRA
ISSUE DATED 15TH AUG ,2002 : PAGE ONE.

Sir/Madam,
I write in shock and agony after reading the article "PARALYSED WITH FEAR,WE COULDN'T STOP HIM" by Mr. Ambarish Mishra a staffer at your esteemed Newspaper, in the issue dated 15th August 2002.!! It deals with the Rape of a Minor girl by one Mr Salim Shamsher Khan. Had I been on that train I would have considered it a matter of duty to defend the honour and life of that unfortunate girl, even if it meant losing my life in the process .After all if five men couldn't defend the girl against one man, what is the level of safety women can feel in our country ? What is the worth of the menfolk of our country ?
Certain duties of courage and sacrifice like defence of the Nation, rescue missions, Protecting the Ladyfolk, children and elderly from harm etc devolve upon the menfolk of the Nation,by default. It is not that only soldiers should do life threatening work for the society and the nation. Mr Bharat Mistry is a strking example of this principle.
Mr. Bharat Mistry made the supreme sacrifice of losing his life ,in trying to recover the "Mangalsutras" of three women. He was dragged by the assailants and stabbed to death .His sacrifice is as necessary and on par with any of our country's brave soldiers who have become Martyrs in defence of the Nation.
The article immediately brings to mind the incident of Ms. Jayabala Asher .Ms Asher's incident had way back highlighted the level of safety felt by women commuters , in our city.
Surely, Mr Ambarish Mishra and his five companions could have emulated either Ms Asher or Mr Mistry. The divine teachings of all the religions preach the eternal truth that to die for a noble cause is to die for God .Surely to defend the honour and life of that unfortunate girl, even if it meant death, would have been a noblest of causes. The movie "Mother India" where a mother kills her son to save the honour of the girl gives an abiding lesson that no sacrifice is too big to save the life and honour of a girl or a woman !!
Secondly, the incident also shows that the woman of our country cannot depend upon their brothers for help even when life and honour is under threat !! Womankind should give to themselves the means to defend themselves by developing their physique, increasing physical strength, become profecient in martial arts and having a self defence weapon like a "Kirpan " (dagger) on their person !!
Thirdly all those criminals who either attempt or violate the honour of a girl or woman should be divested of their organ of manhood .They should also be given stringentest of punishment on an exemplary basis in order to serve the cause of detterance against crimes of the nature as referred to in the article by Mr. Mishra !!

Your's Sincerely,
Mr Venkatkrishnan.K
