Dear Friends:

There was a thread "Who wants to do something for the country" by Hemant-UK and somehow it got lost.

Well, there are countless ways to do something.. and our views could vary. However, I guess most of us would agree to doing something by which "people could help themselves"' by a small amount of contribution.

Many of you may have come across the good work being done by Mr.Mohammed Yunus in Bangaldesh. I recently came across the following site which is found on similar lines: www.planetfinance.org Thomas Friedman refers to this site in his book "The Lexus and the Olive tree". It's located out of France and the default home page is in French..but you can switch to Angalis version from there and find out details.

There is apparently one good micro credit project being supported by planetfinance in North East India. We can also use this opportunity to lend our arm to NE India which incidentally is by and large ignored by mainstream Indians for too long.

  I appreaciate your sincere effort in calling upon forumhubbers to contribute something tangible for the well-being of the marginalized. There are indeed many ways for people to contribute their mite individually or collectively to fellow humans' welfare. What indeed is needed our kind heartedness and willingness to help out,which is the real asset one can possess.
  As a regular reader of deepika.com, the internet version of the oldest Malayalam newspaper, Deepika, I find the site every now and then bring to readers's attention various plights of the needy, and quite gratifingly there are encouraging responses to almost all requests.

  In this fast globalizing world where the divide between rich and poor is going to increasingly widen, all educated people with any amount of disposable money should contribue towards sustainable development. If not out of altruism, at least to ensure that there is no civil war in our lifetime.
  
  I don't know if you have already read this book "The Lexus and the Olive tree" by Thomas Friedman. If you haven't, Siby, I seriously recommend you to. It's really good. Friedman is more a journalist than a free-market evagelist and comes out with his deep concerns on the inevitability as well as perils of Globalization order.
  
  What we in India require, in my humble opinion, is a plethora of able-minded entreprenurs and consolidated set of NGOs. I mean on one front we need to be encouraging multiplicity for staying abreast of copetition, and on the other, we need thrift and non-repetition in order to save the last pie for some worthy cause than plough them in multiple unyielding channels.
