If you have a computer it would be good and much easier. make sure you have a very good soundcard. Make sure your cassette player's output is clear and the tape heads are clear.
What you need.
A Computer with a CDR capability.
A high quality soundcard.
A high quality cassette player (be it a walkman or a good deck)
A software like Sound Forge XP or Sound Forge 6.0 the latter costs around S$500 and the former costs around S$100.
It is basically recording the output of your cassette player into the computer via your soundcard into the recording software(soundforge). make sure you do not hit the red..Digital Clipping (ugly distortion) will kill the audio file.
If you are a singaporean i can show you ..maybe can charge you a minimum fee by buring those CDs for you... More info needed? just mail back at foxtrot_hill@yahoo.com

BTW, you may have realised this by now, if you aint got those things to burn 'em CDs, you are better off buying CDs to replace those cassettes. Unless of course if they are rare gems.
good luck man.

If you just need to convert Cassettes to CDs, you dont need some special softwares, all you need is a soundcard and the default windows sound recorder. Connect your cassette player's lineout to soundcard's line in and hit the record button in your Windows sound recorder (or) Creative recorder (if you have a creative sound card).
If you dont have any sound recording software in yoru computer try the demo versions available for free download.

I know it was not addressed to me but for the sake of recording here it goes. Get a stereo cable with the mini stereo connections. It is called 1/8 inch jack in the US i believe. maybe you wanna take a look see at this link..You can get cheaper ones at a nearby electronics shop..the prices vary according to length

Just for the sake of caution..pay attention to the recording levels. If hiss persists even when recording at optimum levels get a good noise reduction software. BTW i don work for any software companies, it is that I myself use such software to record my band and stuff.Shareware (esp noise reduction, hiss reduction ones)may not let you save your precious work. Afterall it is shareware...

R,
Like Arasan told it is the cable with RCA (L&R) on one side (red and White) and a 1/8 (like the regular stereo headphone pin) on the other side. You can get it at Radio Shack for less than $3.
The RCA side goes on the line out of your cassette player and the 1/8 side goes into your soundcard line in. This is a common setup.
If you dont have a RCA line out in your Cassette player use the headphone jack, but you have to get a 1/8" to 1/8" cable (Like Arasan said Make sure the levels are turned a bit down)

Good Luck!

Good, if you have any problem let us know, BTW here are some free shareware softwares you may want to try http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,2108,00.asp
You can download Soundforge and CoolEdit trial versions from here. They are two real good softwares and It will allow you to save your files in any format, but the only drawback is that you can only play 2 tracks at a time in demo version, which wont affect your cassette to CD procedure. Have Fun.
