Everyday 100 crores of goods are smuggled into Chennai airport everyday from Singapore, Hongkong, Srilanka, Thailand, Dubai and other countries. In this only custom offcials and immigration officials are involved who are partnering this busiess upto 10-20% share of goods smuggled in. Many Srilankans are employed by custom officials themselves so that in case there is special vigilance the goods go back without seizing. If there are Indians then there is risk of goods being seized. The list of goods imported are:
CD PLAYER
DVD PLAYER
MUSIC SYSTEMS
MOBILE PHONES,
SMALL ELECTRONIC GADGETS
CAMERA
HANDYCAM
WATCHES
TEXTILES
COSMETICS,PERFUMES
SPORTS SHOES, GOODS
ETC.
There are some custom officers they themselves allow the same money to go out of country to be deposited in foreign countries. Such currency goes in suitcases with the convenience of every custom officer available at the port.
Imagine how much FERA and FEMA violation is done by own authorities, In case if same is done by small businessman or small trader or small importer the penalty is severe and he will be penalised. There was instance of a small businessman who was killed inside the jail by customs and police together just because he was carrying 10000 US$ approximately and the case was dissolved due to illeteracy of family concerned.

Can any of our agency or govt stop this huge foreign currency drainage due to custom officers themselves?

There is smuggling at other Indian ports also but not upto such huge extent. Daily 300-500 such smugglers are offloaded and sent out at the rate of 40000 Rs per person individually out of which many are appointed by custom officers themselves.
Immigration officers also make 500 RS per head as all such persons go without ECNR and they stamp it keeping all the law at stake.

Who will help such corrupted country?
Such huge amount can literate whole country. or it can solve all the road infrastructure problem or health problem .
As per coservative estimate 250,000 RS crores are involved in bribery in india which may be direct and indirect favours apart from freebies and gifts.

  why? its because india has a brutal and barbaric tax regime. Customs tax ranged from 10% to 400%, only in the past few years it has been lowered and still we have duties more than 100% ( sachin's ferrai attracts 120% duty). What right has the govt to tax the people? Who gave this right to the govt? This is just extortion of the highest order. There is no parellel to this enormous criminal activity of the govt to loot the innocent public in the name of taxes. The only way to reduce all the corrput activities of the customs and immigration officials is to abolish customs duty alltogether or keep it so low that smuggling is simply not worth at all.

  Not only smuggling. Passengers carrying hundreds of pieces of same goods are patted by the official for what they throw at them.
  
  Genuine passengers are subjected to harrassment. One has to go outside to money lenders to get paid for the customs duty, leaving the goods in the custody of the offcial. When he comes back, certainly some of his goods are missin, in pure terms a clear case of theft.

  i visited india in 2000 . I have visited many countries including Australia where the immigration and custom officers are friendly and fair. in Chennai Airport the customs and immigration officers [robbers] are real bast*ards. They simply harrass you for no reason, and take what ever you bring. What is the government doing to stop this daylight robbery, dont they shame this things happening for years and all the tourists are complaining?

  Smuggler always escaped from all...!!!
  But all abrod working poor peoples and labours are always affedted in chennai airport. Atleast our goverment can announce puplic...in newspaper..how much we can carry...from outside INDIA??? we can fight for right with airport thiefs....???
  i plan to file a general case in highcourt for this....
  "All international airport esps' in chennai airport must put very big board in Tamil,english and hindi" for the details of good and money and duty details.
