Keralite’s extradition sought by Kuwait in school scandal
By T.P. Alexander – 03/01/2003 http://www.saudigazette.com.sa/sgazette/Data/2003/1/4/default.xml
[The real story behind AsiaNet Channel]
Trivandrum [03/01/2003]: The confederation of Human Rights Organizations (CHRO), Kerala, has urged State Chief Minister A. K. Antony to pressure the Union Government to initiate suo motto steps to hand over to Asianet President K. P. Mohanan to the Kuwait Government.
Mohanan has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment by the apex Kuwait court for misappropriating a huge sum from the Kuwait-Indian School at Salmiyah.
In a petition to Antony, the CHRO said: “We join with the concern of Keralites aborad, especially in Kuwait, over the political maneuvers being launched by Mohanan, to avoid extradition and imprisonment following the Kuwait Supreme Court’s verdict sentencing him to eight years’ imprisonment”.
The petition noted that the verdict was pronounced by the Kuwait court last month after finding Mohanan and two other Keralites – Mathew Philip and Thomas Chandy alias Kuwait Chandy – guilty of siphoning off millions of rupees belonging to the Indian School, which is a major education institution of Keralites in the Gulf in their capacity as administrators of the school during the Gulf War.
According to reports, out of this booty, Mohanan had invested about Rs. 150 million in Asianet, a Malayalam TV channel and by virtue of which he became the president and managing editor.
The reports said Mohanan had been wielding political influence at the Central level, especially through Union Minister of State for Urban Development O. Rajagopal, to avoid extradition and imprisonment at Kuwait. The tacit understanding is said to be wider coverage through Asianet for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its militant wing Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Evidently, undue news coverage by Asianet to BJP and RSS leaders and events tend to support these reports, the petition observed.
It noted that as per the Kuwaiti law, Mohanan could file his appeal against the sentence to the Amir of Kuwait, but only after submitting himself for the punishment and from within Kuwait jail. Although there is no formal extradition treaty between India and Kuwait, convicts of such serious offenses had been handed over on request by either of the two countries and in view of their cordial diplomatic relationship.
Ever since the Kuwait school scam broke out and Mohanan reached Kerala the Kuwaiti authorities proclaimed him as a declared absconder and alerted the Interpol. Mohanan wields the same political clout at Delhi levels, with which he could avoid arrest, to escape imprisonment after present conviction by the highest court in Kuwait.
“The huge amount looted by Mohanan belonged to the Indian community in Kuwait, mostly Keralites. This had become a major issue of concern of all the Keralites abroad, especially in the Gulf region. It also posed a question mark on the honesty, reputation, image and law abiding nature of the whole Keralite community living in Gulf countries. As such, we consider that any attempt at the Central level to protect Mohanan will be harmful to the overall interests and well-being of the whole Keralite community living in Gulf countires”, the petition noted.
The petition stressed that it was imperative for the Kerala government to make serious efforts to thwart the present attempts of Mohanan to save himself at the cost of the reputation of the entire keralite population living abroad, especially in Kuwait.

Story of Kuwait Indian School Fund Scandal
http://www.keralamonitor.com/kpmohan.html
It was two years back in November 2000 that four prominent Keralites faced criminal charges in connection with the multi-crore Kuwait-Indian School scam. The four-members were accused of siphoning off huge amount of money from the Indian School, Kuwait where more than 5,000 Indian students are on the rolls. A preliminary scrutiny of the school accounts after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait revealed that a sum of more than Rs 400 million was missing from the accounts. (Nearly Rupees. 40 crores!!!). Tthis was only the tip of the ice berg as a few known social workers and businessmen joined hands to dupe the Indian community.

Kuwait Government may ask Indian Government to return K.P.Mohan
http://www.keralamonitor.com/asianetspecial.html
The Indian Government is shielding K.P.Mohan, a proved criminal who has duped thousands of Indian School Parents and Students in Kuwait. While the Indian Government accuses some Gulf countries of harbouring Dawood Ibrahim and other alleged criminals, the same ministers are protecting a proved criminal giving silly reasons like the lack of extradition treaty with Kuwait. Is it because the Asianet editor has been playing the Hindu card very well that the Indian Government is reluctant to hand him over to Kuwait as a reward for popularising Sangh Parivar ideology in Kerala?
Recently, the Kerala High Court asked Kerala Police to investigate a major financial embezzlement case against former staff of a diary company in Muscat. National Diary Product of Muscat got a favourable judgment from the High Court to arrest its former Malayali staff who had absconded with huge amounts. This should be taken as a precedent by the central and state governments to hand over such criminals who create a bad remark to the Kerala community in Gulf.
The most popular Malayalam Channel, Asianet has been very vocal in exposing corruption in high places. It was keenly reporting about a multimillion hawala money flow from the Gulf to Kerala banks. Why is the channel silent about K.P.Mohan who has diverted crores from Indian school funds and invested the same illgotten money in Asianet. Being an important visual medium that influence public opinion of resident and Non Resident Keralites , the channel owes an explanation to the people of Kerala and Asianet viewers about the whole issue.
Charity should begin at home. Asianet Chairman Dr. Raji Menon who occupies an important and responsible position in the Non Resident Keralites Affair Department also owes an explanation to the Overseas Malayalis, especially from Gulf. At least he owes an explanation to the Keralite community in Kuwait. Watch this space.
The Kuwait Court ruling is a clear message to the Prominent NRKs who use political connections to make money from Indian Schools and Associations. Watch this space.
K.P.Mohan, Editor, Asianet gets 8 years Imprisonment from Kuwait Court for Indian School Fund embezzlement
Kuwait City - December 24, 2002. A Kuwaiti court recently sentenced two people to eight years in prison for embezzling KD 150,000 belonging to the Indian Community School, said a report in Kairali TV K.P. Mohanan, Managing Editor of Asianet TV channel, and Mathew Philip, were sentenced in absentia. Their accomplice, Thomas Chandy, was reported to have been fined KD 5,000 for his complicity in the crime. Kuwaiti authorities issued an arrest warrant last year through Interpol for K.P. Mohanan, who left Kuwait for India and joined Asianet after the crime was discovered. According to Indian security officials, Mohanan cannot be arrested and extradited to Kuwait due to the lack of an extradition treaty between India and Kuwait. Mohanan, once served as a trustee of the Indian Community School. Mathew Philip, who also served as chairman of the school, escaped to India after he was released on bail.-keralamaonitor.com

Dear Sir, Congratulations for breaking the Kuwait Indian school judgment from the Kuwait Indian School. I have been following this case and I think the following story is an interesting follow up. The former Indian Ambassador to kuwait, Mr.Prabhu Dayal who tried to recover the Indian School Fund from these people. However, instead of K.P.Mohan being extradited to Kuwait, it was the Indian Ambassador who was extradited to India. He was transferred as a punishment for acting against Mohan, Chandy and others.
Even I am a victim of Asianet's senior officials favours towards corrupt people. I used to report about the Indian school scandal in Muscat and received even threat to my life for reporting the Indian school corruption here. However, the top management of Asianet joined hands with the corrupt businessman and sacked me without showing any reason. Instead of protecting the journalist who was in trouble, they helped a covert campaign to remove me from my full time job with the English newspaper here by providing official letter to my office. Fortunately, I did not lose my job and managed to develop this site http://www.keralamonitor.com which has been reporting a number of scandals in Indian schools in the Gulf. These will be some useful links http://www.keralamonitor.com/asianetspecial.html;

It has become quite common in our society that any criminal can gain reputation and honour given that he has ample of money in his possession.
The so-called criminal K P Mohanan is also enjoying the same reputation as we can see him interviewing people of different walks of life and exposing himself to the media with no qualm or shame.
Of course, this reveals the rotten ordinary Keralite mind. While we are crying to get back Dawood Ibrahim, we are keeping other notorious criminal like this including several politician inhouse at the safety of our own walls.
In other way, there is nothing to surpise in this, becuase we need money and we do anything to get that. In a completely corrupted country, nothing is of that great surpise.
