There are no equivalents anywhere else except for thermal wear, etc. Plus banians are somewhat high-tech inasmuch they have to be machine knitted which is a relatively new technology.

  word BANIYAN has come into english language from Bandiyun which was the typical dress of Baniyas .There is another school of thought which says that the traders of olden days used to seat under the Banyan tree wearing typical half shirt.
  So they came to be identified as baniyans.

  The word came from the Sanskrit word "Vaaneejya"
  means "commerce". Vaishyas (Third among the
  4 Varnas in Hinduism) are supposed to do "Vaaneejyam" or commerce. They were called "Vaaniyas" therefore. In some languages like Bengali and Oriya "Va" is interchanged with "Ba"
  and therefore the word "Baaniya" came up.
  The Banyan tree's name came from Baniyas, (not the other way rond as told by Hemant). The cloth
  worn by them came to be called banian.
