LETTERS TO EDITOR COLUMN,
TIMES OF INDIA
7TH MARCH, 2003

Respected Editor,

Subject :- WHAT WOMEN NEED , BUT HAVE IGNORED !!

Sir/Madam,
Today is International Women's day and the whole world especially womenfolk celebrate the various success and achievements of womenfolk !!
As a person working for a local woman's organisation for more than a decade ,I feel pained that the most important need of a woman is being ignored leading to many a woman
being victimised in a brutal way.
I refer to Physique, physical strength and knowledge of self defense techniques. Many a woman since time
immemorial have been subjected to PHYSICAL HARM ,simply because the person comitting such a crime knows that a woman is physically
incapable of defending herself. The fact that even Ms Aishwarya Rai,a former Ms world and Ms Zeenat Aman ,an actress of great fame, were also a victims of physical harm committed by men of
extreme chauvanistic tendencies, shows vividly
that, education, achievements,Status in society, financial independence and other such criteria is no deterrance for one who
wants to hurt a woman.
An incident reported in your esteemed news paper,The Times Of india, Dated 11th February 2003 comes to mind .I refer to the case of a Dutch research Student,Ms Stephanie Koot, who was way-laid and assaulted by a group of robbers but she managed to fight them successfully. This is because she , a six-footer ,was a very strong and probably had some knowledge of self defense technique.
Courage alone is not enough because in the famous "Jayabala Asher incident" what allowed Jayabala's assaliant to get better of her and push her out of the running train was , her small stature and lack of physical strength.
Thus we can see that the one thing women need from personal security point of view is Physical strength, knowledge of self defence techniques and a well built physique.

Thanking you in anticipation,

Your's Sincerely,
Rushmi Dave

P.s. I would like to meet Ms. Stephanie Koot, Who was mentioned in the article by Mr. VIDHYADAR DATE ,"Dutch woman fights of
attackers" ,dated 11th Feb 2003.I'll be greatful if your noble self can ask Ms Koot to contact me at rushmidave@rediffmail.com,
at the soonest. Many thanks once again !!
