ORIGIN OF WORDS

The origin of words, particularly English words fascinates me. For example, the English word CATAMARAN originates from the Tamil word ‘KATTUMARAM’. Kattumaram in Tamil mean a small boat made of wooden logs tied together with ropes. It is been used by Tamil Fishermen for generations with no modification except for a removable Engine, which the Fishermen have added to power their Kattumaram. Though Kattumarams are still primitive, the Catamarans assumed a new distinction as the tour operators call their Luxury liners as Catamarans.

I invite the forum members to share their knowledge on the interesting origins of other English words.
