How do you free yourself from previous beliefs?

I was born into a family that believes a certain way, with a certain religion and I want to start from scratch. I want to make sure what I believe is not instilled without my consent (as a child) and now many of the things is hard to sort out and distinguish if I've checked them at the door.
Not only about religion, but about certain upbringings and so forth. I would like to have my own perspectives and be able to be strong in beliefs of my own conviction.
Where do you begin to get such strong convictions?

Just curious,
Jai Karunamayi is the same as Jai Mathaji. :)

What is Jai Mathaji...I have no idea, either!? :)
Just asking, but why do you end many of your posts with "Jai Kaunanmayi!"?

Ellen,
"Jai Mathaji" means "Glory to the Divine Mother". Similarly, "Jai Karunamayi" means "Glory to Karunamayi(She who is full of Compassion)". When I say "Jai Karunamayi!", I am invoking the Divine Mother in the form of my guru, Sri Karunamayi. Jai Karunamayi!

>>>I want to get myself off my silly "wrath of Devi/Karunanmayi" bit. How do I do it?
So.. what is the problem, exactly? Wrath against one full of Compassion? I still don't get it clearly!

NO! Ellen,
I did not mean Devis Wrath against Karunamayi. I meant this: How do I get off this Wrath of Karunamayi bit I have been carrying with me. How can Karunamayi, Who is so full of compassion be wrathful? I think this paranoia I have of Karunamayi getting angry comes from my Christian days when I was taught about the wrath of God concept. I do not know how to shake myself of such a silly belief. Yes I do have a guru. Karunamayi is my guru.

Hey, good! I've yet to respond! This is pretty exciting, as I've never been exposed to such "music"...:)

Maybe Karunamayi does have that emotion but uses it extremely wisely, and never against those who put their faith in Him even at their most fragile.
(PS I know very little about Hindu Gods and, humbly I hope my comment is acceptable).

Jez,
Karunamayi is a Her, not a Him.

do you talk to Karunamayi? How does she advise?

How do you free yourself from previous beliefs?
I don't know the answer to this but that does not prevent me from typing :) I think if you start being a little introspective and look inwards into your beliefs from the viewpoint of an observer, and do it as a matter of daily routine, some day or the other you should find yourself having a balanced perspective of different beliefs. Always the catch lies in being impartial to all beliefs, whether yours or others'.

A balanced framework is surely what is desired. There's alot of wisdom in difference of beliefs. Ellen's going to take the advice.

Ellen,
If you believe in telepathic and psychic abilities, I speak to Karunamayi in my prayers, and She coomunicates with me through various means. I hope I will meet Karunamayi next year. A year ago today, I became a devotee of Karunamayi. A year ago this morning, Karunamayi appeared to me in a waking dream(Meaning, a dream one will have as he or she is waking up). It was so wonderful. I will tell you the story later. Jai Karunamayi!

Hey, that's interesting. Though I've never experience telepathy or psychic abilities, I, being so curious, have checked out books in past on these things. I've read about color auras and telepathy. I am quite a realistic person (grounded in reality) but I have never disregarded the possibilities of such phenomena, only because I believe it is interesting, if such things were to exist.
The researches that I've read on telepathy, tested people's telepathic abilites by having a screen shade put up so that the person could not see the images that were being held up behind the screen. The person on the other side would try to guess. The research found that the normal people without telepathy were slightly less accurate than the people who claimed to be telepathic. I don't think it was a statistics that would make someone go, "Wow!", though.
But I do think auras and such are interesting, as some claim that they can see auras radiating from people. At one time, when I was lacking alot of sleep, I would always have before me some golden auras when meeting new people... I think my lack of sleep may have produced it... but then...? ;)
Anyways, tell me the story. It sounds interesting.

Also, can you explain exactly who she is, historically, mythologically, or religiously...as I had no idea what/who she is before you mentioned it.

Ellen,
Sri Karunamayi Bhagavathi Sri Vijayeswari Devi affectionately known as Amma by Her devotees was born on Vijayadasami day in 1959. A year before Her birth, Sri Ramana Maharshi gave a sign that thaay(Divine Mother) will be born on Earth in a human form. So it happened in 1959, Sri Karunamayi was born. From Her birth, Sri Karunamayi showed many Divine Attributes and extraordinary abilities!
My story of how I became a devotee of Amma Sri Karunamayi Bhagavathi Sri Vijayeswari Devi.
It was April 7, 2002. I had just come home from work. I did my usual routine which I do after coming home from work. I went to the Internet and I checked my e-mail. In my e-mail, I got a notice through a newsletter I get via e-mail from Hawaii that a woman by the name of "Karunamayi" was touring the US (She has been doing so since 1995). I, out of curiosity and interest in my Hindu faith, clicked the link and on that same link was an itinerary of all the places Karunamayi will be visiting. At the top of the page, I saw a picture of Karunamayi in an orange sari and smiling. I saved the link for about a week and discarded it into the recycle bin on my desktop. (Good thing I did not permenantly delete the link!) Until the morning of Wednesday, May 8, 2002...
On the morning of Wednesday, May 8, I had a dream that Karunamayi appeared to me just as She looked in Her itinerary. Also, I saw Her Name, "Karunamayi" in black letters. When I awoke, something possessed me to look for Karunamayi on the Internet. It was so unbelievable. It was as if Karunamayi was calling me, pulling me towards Her. I found Sri Karunamayis old website (A new was opened at the end of March this year), plus some other websites. I had so many mixed emotions about what was happening. I was, of course, happy because I have a new guru. I was also scared/nervous, because I did not know who She was, why She came into my dream etc.. 2 days later, I downloaded a picture of Karunamayi as She appeared in my dream. When the picture came up on my computer, I fell down before the picture and said, "Oh Karunamayi!". I was so happy because Sri Karunamayi came and took me into Her Care. I offer my humble salutations at the Feet of Karunamayi who is worshipped as an Embodiment(avatar) of the Divine Mother. May I spend the rest of my life in Sri Karunamayis Service(Seva).
Jai Karunamayi!
