Hi, I am attempting to research the introduction of British Law and its very first Indigenous [Indian] Lawyers in South India, particularly those that practised in the then Madras State. Can anyone direct me to texts or information sites that may give me a clue as to where to start. I guess I should ask whether there were any Indian born lawyers that were allowed to practice prior to 1850? Would the Madras High Court/Tamil Nadu Law Society have any old records?
Any asistance is appreciated. Thank you for your time.

  Send an e-mail to the web master and try to get more info.Normally Indian people are very helpful and there must be tons of private law firm in Madras ( Chennai)..I did a simple google search for law firm madras and it came up with lots of results , may be you can get assistance from there

  I am sure you will find 'Biographical Vistas' and
  'Pen Potraits' by Sir C P Ramaswamy Iyer useful. The former is not in print as far as I know. The other one is available at C P Ramaswami iyer foundation at madras. Both of them contain biographical accounts of eminent personalities including the leading members of the bar of the past in south India. The books will provide you with a wealth of information.
  
  Let me also suggest the collected writings/speeches of Sir P S Sivaswami Iyer.
  Rt.Hon. V S Srinivasa Sastri has also written
  biographical accounts of the towering personalities of his day. Sorry,I do not remember the titles of the books mentioned above.
  
  The internet I far as I see does not seem to carry the kind of information you are looking for. The law college library or High Court library should be your best bet.

  You can get a lot of material from the book "century completed" published by the law Weekly, Madras. copies of the same are avaliable with the reference library of the Madras Bar Association. you can get photostat copies on payment of charges.
