doctors do
1. prescribe costly medicines more than reqd depending on patients wealth.
2. run medical shop
2. take percentage from diagnostic centres and medical shops.

If they are going to spend lakhs to get educated.. then that is what we can expect. They are not doing a service as it has become a business. The system of education has to change to set things right.

A large part of the blame for corruption of the medical profession should go to the Pharmaceutical companies who give phenomenal bribes to doctors and purchase officers in hospitals to prescribe their medecines. The bribes range from cash, fridges, cars to trips abroad for the family. Nowadays doctors openly ask what the offer is. Ask any medical rep and he will tell you. The biggest international names among Pharma companies are the ones who have brought things to such a pass.
Government hospitals quite often store drugs made by substandard manufacturers. The kickbacks are higher.
Disgusting.

Being unethical is a phenomenon with every profession n India, be it a doctor or a cobbler.
How ever medical profession being a matter of life and death, has to be dealt with utmost seriousness. Blame culture only increases the threat. The remedy could be to educate etiquettes employing a more effective method during the professional course and thereafter.

I'm from Sri Lanka, and the same unethical issues discussed here could be applied to the doctors in my country as well. One of the worst and inhumane act I've ever seen is "Doctors' Strike". This inhumane act cannot be forgiven what so ever.

hi everyone...
DOCTOR profession is a NOBLE and DEDICATED profession.. let us not pass generalised statements... i longed to become a doctor to serve the people.. but i couldn't.. now, i wish to marry a doctor.. so that, i can dedicate my life to him who is going to serve the people...

Lack of ethics seems to be common place. Yes of course there are good doctors, but there are multitudes who are there only for the money.
I recently posted about a welknown diabetist in Salem, India who told a 65 year old patient (who has diabetes and some BP, nothing major) that it was time for her to get ready for the nether life "at her age" and not be too concerned about her aches and pains.
Who is this guy to decide when someone's mother, sister, grandmother should get ready to die? What kind of behaviour is this.

Priya:
"DOCTOR profession is a NOBLE and DEDICATED profession"
ONLY when practiced in such a manner. Make sure the doctor you choose to marry is a dedicated and noble guy with strong ethics. Or may be better yet, you could marry an unethical doctor and teach him to be ethical, that way you might have done your service :))

majority of them, become arrogant, more than money minded.
I feel a doctor, should be calm, kind and consoling to the patient, rather than being prudish, arrogant, and short tempered.
I find many doctors, do NOT talk or explain things to the patients, when they are questioned. (natural inquisitiveness amongst the patients). The worst is when the doctors, keep a very strict and non-smiling face, and treat patients, like a commodity to be examined rather t han someone with emotions and anxiety.
Some doctors, get so angry, when u ask questions regarding the disease ( i have experienced it)
The saddest thing is, most of the famous and known doctors, are very gloomy and short tempered, (probably because of the crowd which visit them , and the tiredness and tension) and inspite of it, ppl go to them, though they DREAD the doctor.
What patients need is
1. care
2. smile
3. understand
AND THEN UR MEDICINES
we want friends in the name of doctors...

I was talking to my friend ( he is a young doctor ). he said doctors r always working under pressure. They don't get paid enough for their value they providing . So they have to work extra ( Private places )
when working with pressure , they r concerntrating only on their duty as diagnosing and providing medicine . that is what they fail to treat patients properly.

>and asking them to get ready to die because they are old >
that is very bad.
but experienced doctors somehow better on treatment.
Something happened in Toronto also ( last year )
I took my aunt (65 +) to Hospital ( emergency ) and doctors didn't pay mech attention and simply say it was becuse of aging. Then she stopped going to clinics .
Now she is in Madras for treatment . I learned she is better and happy .
