Orphanage founder held on rape charge

VISAKHAPATNAM, FEB. 28. The founder-president of the Cavalry Children Home, Tagarapuvalasa, Mandavalli John Moses, was apprehended by the Bhimunipatnam police on Saturday on charges of rape and harassment of inmates.

Following a complaint from a woman advocate on behalf of two `victims,' the police raided the orphanage and the residence of 53-year-old Moses at Tagarapuvalasa, 30 km from here, and detained him last night.

A police team, led by the Circle Inspector, P. Ravi Varma, arrested the accused under Sections 342 (illegal confinement), 376 (rape) and 506 (creating fear) of Indian Penal Code after sealing off the orphanage and seizing a VCD, a colour TV, nine porno CDs, 23 photographs of nude women, some obscene literature and a copy of "Kamasutra.''

He allegedly used to invite inmates to his house in the absence of his wife and force them to have sex after asking them to watch blue films, the Superintendent of Police, Sanjeev Kumar Jain, told The Hindu .

Meanwhile, the victims have been sent for medical examination. The inmates are being shifted to social welfare hostels.

It is yet to be ascertained as to whether Moses also sexually exploited eight boys and four girls who were staying in the orphanage at the time of the raid.

After quitting his job as a pharmacist in the Chittivalasa Jute Mills in 1992, Moses set up the orphanage in the Balaji Nagar area a couple of years ago.

Police enquiries revealed that it had no permission from the Government. Several inmates left the orphanage.

The incident came to light when two inmates ran away from the orphanage recently and told their relatives about their "nightmarish experience'' at Yendada. M.S. Bhanurani, an advocate, who was staying next door, came to know about the goings-on at the orphanage and contacted the two girls aged 13 years.

They allegedly told her as to how Moses used to force them to satisfy his lust and later blackmail them by threatening to expose nude photographs taken by him.

The wife of Moses is said to be working as a teacher.

Visakhapatnam, March 1: The two minor girls, who were sexually abused by pastor John Moses at Tagarapuvalasa, were handed over to SOS, a voluntary organisation, near Bhimili on Monday. The six boys from the home were also sent to a children home in Paderu.

Six girls and six boys were kept at Cavalry Children Home by Moses before it came to light on Saturday with the arrest of the accused.

Project director of Woman and Child Development department P Swaraj-yalakshmi was present when the children were provided the new shelter.

The project director said there were no recognised children homes in the district and she also had decided not to permit any voluntary organisation to run children homes in the district. So far only five homes in the district were permitted and their department was satisfied with their conduct, she said.

“We put an advertisement in all newspapers warning NGOs setting up childrens homes without permission,’’ she said. Most of the unrecognised homes were operating without putting any billboard and drawing funds from christian missionaries.

Soon after the Parvi Raj incident, representatives of all the 150 voluntary organisations were called for a meeting in which they were told to unearth illegal shelter homes. She said not a complaint was received so far from these organisations.

Moses operated a hostel for boys and girls and it was not a full-fledged shelter home. The children were going to local school and the grown up girls were used as a domestic helps at his residence where he allegedly abused them.

John Moses, meanwhile, was produced before a magistrate on Monday and sent to remand.

It was reported on the Fox that there were 11,000 cases reported of child abuse by these Devil worshippers in the last few years. Is this an epidemic or what and why has the world been slumbering ?
