Hi friends,
A very close friend is moving to the States in the coming months but is receiving mixed advice on setting up home there. Right from whether to take their furniture, electronics, household appliances etc.(which they've been using here for the past 3yrs) along, to which kitchen items are difficult to obtain there, people are giving very conflicting ideas.
I hope those who are presently residing there can please help with your practical suggestions & if possible share your experiences. It would be extremely helpful.
With thanks,
Kamakshi.

electric - here the power is 110volts.
kitchen items - everything is available here. It would be cheaper if bought from India

Hi Kamakshi,
It depends on which state ur friend is going and where she is coming from. Because, we moved to New Jersey 5 years back from Abu dhabi, UAE. The period we came here it was too cold, so went to Dubai to buy some Acrylic Jacket.
Reg., electronics, as CP said, dont have to buy anything from there. Maybe if ur friend is in India, can buy 110 V mixer and grinder though it is available here(NJ) in USA.
I actually brought all my vessels because, it wont be as strong as it is available here. Except for non-stick tava and pan, microwaveable containers/vessels, can bring the stainless vessels. Bringing vesels like vanali, it depends on the individuals. Ultimately, if she brings important things now, maybe if any of her folks comes here, she can make them to bring other vessels. That is what i did as well as the others.
Frozen grated coconut is available here and it is like fresh coconut in my place. My friend who is from Boston insisted to bring manual coconut grater since it is not available here.
Other than the above, bringing furniture is not a good idea, better ask her to sell the big items and come with their dresses and kitchen utensils alone is enough.
I had a kid when we came here. Still we managed with the two things which I mentioned above. Since the apartment is a furnished one(fridge, oven, gas stove will be there), dont have to worry.
Hope this is enough, if u need anything particular, feel free to ask.
Bye

Thanks very much CP & R for your responses!
My friend is also from UAE, Sharjah. They will be leaving for Bombay towards end of July & after a couple of weeks or so, are leaving for the States. They have a LOT of furniture (some expensive, IKEA); since their home-theatre system is rather expensive (Sony/Yamaha) & was purchased just 18 months back, her husband is not at all happy about selling it...He is keen on getting something called 'setup/setdown' switch to attach to all his system, TV etc. Is it a good idea?

Hello R,
I was just thinking that it would be better if she contacted you directly as she may want to know some things in particular, specific details etc. So, if it is not a trouble, can you please give your mail id, so that she can mail you. Her name, by the way, is Sujatha. She too has a child, 3 1/2 years old.
Thanks again for responding,
Kamakshi.

I have thought of getting 220v circuit installed for wet grinder but was told I need some permission orsomething needed for it.
The whole house is wired for 110 v with one 220v for drier.
I got a transformer for 220v wetgrinder once but the transformer did not work.
Do not know whether UAE tv and usa tv are the same. I know india tv and usa are not the same.
Regarding furniture depends on the shipping cost.

No problem, Kamakshi. Ask her to contact me at vplusplus@hotmail.com and definitely, will try to help her as much as I can.
We bought home theatre here only. Anyway, will ask my husband for any valuable suggestion since he is good in dealing things like this.
Abt. furniture, when we were in Abu dhabi, the house was so big. When we moved in here, that was an apartment and it was not as big as in UAE. Brining furniture from there to here also depends on that.
We actually sold things very early, so had a good deal with an Indian fly. itself.
