hi anu,
Mix 1 cup rice and 1/4 cup moong dal .Add 3 1/2 cup water to it and keep it ready. now cut 1/4 inch ginger into fine pieces.Take 2 tsp ghee in a fry pan and add 1 tsp whole black peppers, and 1 tsp cumin seeds. When the peppers burst add ginger pieces and a pinch of turmeric powder.
You should be cautious while adding the black peppers and cumins seeds pieces in hot oil. They may burst all over. Therefore use low heat .
Add 10 - 15 cashewnuts and remove the pan when the cashews are roasted and begin to smell.Add this to pongal mix which u have kept ready.Add 1/2 tsp salt, a sprig of curry leaves and mix well.now , pressure cook them .while taking out the rice see that it is overcooked. if not, u can mash them when it is hot. Add some ghee while serving.

Hi,
Another way of making ven pongal -
In a pan..first add one cup rice...rost it for a while..till the rice becomes slightly hot...remove ..then in the same pan..add 1/4 cup moong daal and rosat them..till about there is a slight change in the color....add it with the rice...after some time wash them and drain and keep aside..
in the mean time...add few spoons of ghee...add jeera, curry leaves, black pepper, cashew nuts(optional),ginger pieces..now add the rice and moong dal mixture and stir wee for a few minutes..the add about 3 -4 cups of water, salt and pressure cook it...add some more ghee before serving...eat hot with sambhar / coconut chutney
Enjoy

If you want to know how its made at a temple - here you go:
Stick 1 part rice 1/3 part Moong dal and ground pepper and cumin seeds in a rice cooker - add any thing between 2 to 3 time water (depending on how you like pongal and let it cook. You can also add salt to this - whil eI prefer to add later.
Meanwhile, prepare a garnish Ginger, cashews and green chillis and some more pepper and cumin seeds, curry leaves etc. in Ghee and add to the cooked dal / rice mix add salt if you have not added and mix well.
Enjoy it!
