Violin tuning in carnatic is Sa Pa Sa Pa Sa.
The second string without any fingering is for Sa.
And the first one without any fingering is for Pa.
The third one is Mandrasthai Pa. and the Fourth is Mandhrasthai Sa.
1/4 size violins are meant for children of age group 3 to 5 yrs. 1/2 size is for age group 6 to 12 yrs. and Full size is for adults.

The tuning pa-sa-pa-sa is normally used in Hindustani though some use sa-pa-sa-pa for different scale.
Karnatic, western and light music normally use sa-pa-sa-pa as the finger pressure reqiured on the strings is lesser compared to pa-sa-pa-sa

I think western style of violin tuning is based on perfect fifth, which is Pa - Re - Da - Ga going from the thickest to the thinnest string. Indian violin players who play film tunes and in orchestra generally tune as Ma - Pa - Sa - Ri. This again is tuned to perfect fifth
I feel you can tune in any style and play. it hardly matters. In fact I do not understand the rationale behind carnatic tuning. Rarely do we hear somebody singing below Mandara Sthayi Ma. So tuning the thickest ( G) string to Ma seems to offer optimum usasge of the length of the string rather than tuning this string to Mandra Sthayi Sa

Correction.
Normally the indian film orchestra players tune as Ma-Sa-pa-Re and not Ma-Pa-Sa-Re, which will be a perfect fifth tuning
