Hi,

I read "Difficult Daughters" recently.I was intrigued by the outline of the story , but when it came to transporting me to full absorbence, it didnt live up to expectations.

Anyone else have any opinions on it?

  Never read an outline and go for the text. If you do so you will end up with disappointment. You will never really concentrate between the lines rather the gist that you have in your mind. Do you agree with my response?

  I agree with D. Murali Manohar's opinion. When you read a book or a even watch a movie without any idea what it's about, you have no expectations and thereby percieve it better. I think Difficult Daughters is a beautifully written novel and it touches a lot of feminist issues that hold true even today.

  Dear Dr. Jain,
  I have written my thesis on the representation of women in Indo-English literature (from Sita to New Woman) and among all the books I dealt with, this one somehow intrigued me the most because it does so clearly represent the psychological dependence of (Indian) women on the old patterns and "Man"; a dependence which even the best education in the world cannot compensate for. The discrepancy between the potential outer freedom of the protagonist and her actual lack of inner freedom is striking! I am feeling inspired to try and write a scientific article on this novel. So if you, Dr. Jain, should get hold of the author's address, I would like to know and would also be greatful for all kinds of information and personal opinions.

  I'm in the middle of reading the book and so far I'm enjoying it. I'm finding it very intriguing and interesting because I am not from India and it's fascinating the difference between Indian women in different countries.
  
  I've never heard of Manju Kapur before. She must be well known in India. Does anyone know if she has written any other books? I would love to read more of her stuff.

  I first read the book six months ago. I am a young Asian woman growing up in London and I feel that even though the book is set in a different time and country the author has managed to put on paper what I and a lot of my friends are going through - both in terms of our culture and our gender.

  difficult daughters is an average book. not outstanding, by any standards. manju kapur's language, though, is really good. different style, and absorbing.

  Manju Kapur is an ordinary writer.she is creation of publisher and delhi media .She is lecturer in Miranda house in Delhi.there are other writers who touch your heart.Individual liking is never challengeable.If you want to read sufferings of partition go through Yashpal's Jhuta Such,Chaman S Nahal 'Azadi'and Bapsi Sidhwa's 'Ice Candy Man'.Literatue is full of love and suffering.

  i agree with everyone's response on this page. i am taking up DD as my project topic in the final year of B.A.
  Manju kapur is one of the few Indian authors who successfully paints the real picture of indian women. also portrayal of indian customs n traditions is so apt, vivid n elaborate.
  the feminist issues she touches upon can b related to, even today.
  her diction, style theme are all well chosen to convey her strong sentiments on feminist issues.
